:00:06. > :00:13.This is East Midlands Today. But Davies when students found out if

:00:13. > :00:23.they had made the grade. It has been the toughest year for getting

:00:23. > :00:31.

:00:31. > :00:41.into university. I have got a place Tons of straw are set alight.

:00:41. > :00:51.Further warnings given to the owners of two hospitals who look

:00:51. > :00:55.after patients with learning difficulties. Good evening. Welcome

:00:55. > :00:58.to the programme. It is of course A level result day. Universities say

:00:58. > :01:01.this is the toughest year yet for A level students with the fiercest

:01:01. > :01:04.battle for places ever seen. Students faced having to get higher

:01:04. > :01:07.grades than ever to get into their first choice of university and only

:01:07. > :01:11.a handful of clearing places were available. Sarah Teale has been

:01:11. > :01:14.with some of those teenagers getting their results today.

:01:14. > :01:20.Yes, and those teenagers knew they faced the most intense pressure yet

:01:20. > :01:23.to get the best grades to guarantee a place at university. More

:01:23. > :01:28.students than ever are vying for places as many aren't having a gap

:01:28. > :01:33.year to beat the tuition fee increase next year. So results day

:01:33. > :01:43.this year was more tense than ever. I was with students in Nottingham

:01:43. > :01:44.

:01:44. > :01:53.when they found out their grades earlier today. High emotion all

:01:53. > :01:58.round for these six former has been at Nottingham. I have got my

:01:58. > :02:03.English and politics. I am in! After two years of studying, the

:02:03. > :02:12.great printed on these pieces of paper determine the direction of

:02:12. > :02:22.their lives will take. I have got a place at Cambridge now, so I am

:02:22. > :02:26.

:02:26. > :02:31.happy. I am going into the RAF. got into it Aberystwyth. A I have

:02:31. > :02:38.got the grades to get to university, so I will be doing biochemistry.

:02:38. > :02:44.What is today like for a parent? is like a roller-coaster. We are

:02:44. > :02:49.thrilled. I have got into my first choice to study medicine at

:02:49. > :02:53.Nottingham. I am very relieved and very pleased. Competition for

:02:53. > :02:56.university places are fiercer than ever this year as students rush to

:02:56. > :03:01.get in before the fee increase next year. But some students have

:03:01. > :03:06.decided that they don't actually want to go to university at all.

:03:06. > :03:12.The money mostly. I do not want to be in debt. It is not for me.

:03:12. > :03:20.Because of the fees. It is too expensive. I want to get settled

:03:20. > :03:26.into a job. But 20-year-old Kate is going to university, to Cambridge,

:03:26. > :03:30.no less. The first student from her college to ever go there. I am sure

:03:31. > :03:37.in the next hour or two it was sinking. I will be able to look at

:03:37. > :03:42.my results properly. I am excited and happy. There were tears as well

:03:42. > :03:45.for those students who did not do as well, but overall, schools are

:03:45. > :03:48.reporting another record year of results.

:03:48. > :03:51.And today one family has been having a triple celebration. Piya,

:03:51. > :03:54.Kurran and Anushka Sachdeva are triplets and all picked up their A

:03:54. > :03:57.level results from Nottingham High School this morning. To add to

:03:57. > :04:00.their excitement the trio were also celebrating their 18th birthdays.

:04:00. > :04:10.All three achieved the grades they needed to gain places at Edinburgh,

:04:10. > :04:14.

:04:14. > :04:20.Birmingham and Bristol universities. We all started crying and

:04:20. > :04:26.celebrating an opening cards. the record, I did not cry. I cried

:04:26. > :04:31.the most. A lot er there has been sidetracked because of the results,

:04:31. > :04:34.but we have got anything we need and we are just so happy now.

:04:34. > :04:37.So tears of joy there, but for some there's been tears of

:04:37. > :04:40.disappointment. Those that didn't get the grades they hoped, had to

:04:40. > :04:43.go through the clearing process. And a real scramble it was, too,

:04:43. > :04:46.with just a handful of places up for grabs. Across all our

:04:46. > :04:49.universities just a few hundred places available in clearing. The

:04:49. > :04:57.university of Leicester says it's seen a surge in applicants this

:04:57. > :05:03.year as students battle to beat next year's fee increase.

:05:03. > :05:07.I think the increase in tuition fees is clearly leading to a surge

:05:07. > :05:15.in interest this year. We have confirmed my students than in

:05:15. > :05:21.previous years, we have less places available. We are looking at a very

:05:21. > :05:31.it for university. Consequently, we are asking for higher grades. It is

:05:31. > :05:32.

:05:32. > :05:36.one of the fiercest battles for places in many years. Everyone knew

:05:36. > :05:42.it was going to be a tough year with fewer places and tuition fees

:05:42. > :05:47.set to increase. So what does it mean for students? With us now is

:05:47. > :05:51.Alex Nutt, president of Leicester University students Union. Everyone

:05:51. > :05:57.is talking about the increase in tuition fees and the scrabble to

:05:57. > :06:07.try and avoid them. How has it affecting the choices of students?

:06:07. > :06:13.

:06:13. > :06:19.Well, it depends what causes -- courses they choose. Engineering

:06:19. > :06:22.and science courses will have more places. What advice would you give

:06:22. > :06:27.from your position to students who have not got the results they were

:06:27. > :06:34.hoping for? But first thing is to stay calm and consider your options.

:06:34. > :06:39.It is not all over. There are other options, not just clearing. You can

:06:39. > :06:44.reapply next year, but that will incur the higher tuition fees.

:06:44. > :06:51.is what everyone is trying not to do. People are giving up their gap

:06:51. > :07:01.years. Yes. In 2012, the average debt a student will incur his

:07:01. > :07:03.

:07:03. > :07:09.53,000, which is double the amount this year. But what if they had not

:07:09. > :07:17.got the grades though? It well, it is devastating, but it is not the

:07:17. > :07:21.end of the world. A quick congratulations. Leicester has come

:07:21. > :07:31.in the top three for preferred universities. What makes it so

:07:31. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:41.good? It is just a great place to study. Later in the programme -

:07:41. > :07:48.another warning for the owners of up to care homes. If they do not

:07:48. > :07:50.improve conditions, they will face prosecution.

:07:50. > :07:52.Next tonight - the arsonists causing destruction for farmers.

:07:52. > :07:56.Fires are still burning on five farms in South Nottinghamshire

:07:56. > :08:00.after being targeted overnight. Hundreds of tonnes of straw and hay

:08:01. > :08:05.has gone up in flames. The first report came at a quarter to

:08:05. > :08:11.midnight at Thorpe Lane in South Newark. Half an hour later, crews

:08:11. > :08:15.were called to a much larger fire at Sibthorpe. Then at 3.50am this

:08:15. > :08:18.morning a further 100 tonnes were on fire at Elton on the A52. 20

:08:18. > :08:20.minutes later, 800 tonnes of straw was burning at Granby and by 4.40am,

:08:20. > :08:30.crews were dealing with another incident at Plunger Lane. Our

:08:30. > :08:34.

:08:34. > :08:39.reporter Angelina Socci is at one of the farms affected. Good evening.

:08:39. > :08:44.Hello. 12 hours after this fire started, this evening it is still

:08:44. > :08:49.burning. 500 tonnes had been destroyed. The cost around 30,000.

:08:49. > :08:53.This is just one of five fires that broke out overnight and it could

:08:53. > :08:57.take several days to burn out. The police are investigating what

:08:57. > :09:07.happened. Well, Peter is the farmer here. How do you feel when you see

:09:07. > :09:09.

:09:09. > :09:16.this? Not so much angry as sad and disillusioned. What is the point of

:09:16. > :09:23.doing this? What impact will this have on you? Well, this morning, or

:09:23. > :09:29.rather last night, there was a hundred yards of a straw here. All

:09:29. > :09:36.the bails were about six foot tall and there were 1,200 bales in the

:09:36. > :09:43.stack. Now they have to be replaced. I just do not see the point of

:09:43. > :09:48.setting fire to it. And what will the impact be long term? Well,

:09:48. > :09:56.there are financial costs, but one has to keep things in perspective.

:09:56. > :10:04.The riots in London were devastating as people lost their

:10:04. > :10:09.homes. The stroke can be replaced, but at a cost. All fireman can do

:10:09. > :10:16.now is to leave the fires to burn out. They have been at reckless.

:10:16. > :10:20.They have put people's lives at risk. The fire service are now

:10:20. > :10:26.advising farmers to keep stroll away from roads as much as possible,

:10:26. > :10:29.away from hedges, buildings and to remain vigilant.

:10:29. > :10:32.Thank you. A man from Nottingham was in court

:10:32. > :10:35.this afternoon facing three charges of rape. Richard Mundle, who's 32

:10:35. > :10:38.and from Bestwood, appeared at the Magistrates Court in Derby. He is

:10:38. > :10:41.also accused of sexual assault and misuse of computer systems. The

:10:41. > :10:44.Crown Prosecution Service says this relates to using a police computer

:10:45. > :10:54.to get information about a woman. He's due to appear at Derby Crown

:10:54. > :10:57.Court on the 1st of September. A 33-year-old man has appeared at

:10:57. > :11:00.Derby Magistrates Court charged with murder. Johnny Assani, who was

:11:00. > :11:02.43, was assaulted in Derby last Sunday afternoon. He died in the

:11:02. > :11:10.Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham on Monday. Mohammad

:11:10. > :11:13.Shahid will appear at Nottingham Crown Court next week.

:11:13. > :11:15.Network Rail say this evening's services are running smoothly

:11:15. > :11:19.following signal failure at Nottingham train station this

:11:19. > :11:23.morning. Replacement buses were put on after all services were

:11:23. > :11:26.suspended between the city and St Pancras in London. With rail fares

:11:26. > :11:36.rising by 8% in the New Year, these commuters weren't impressed with

:11:36. > :11:37.

:11:37. > :11:42.the delay to their journey. It has taken two hours. We are you coming

:11:42. > :11:47.in from? Long Eaton. We were coming from London through to Nottingham

:11:47. > :11:56.and it was fairly straightforward. Normally get into Nottingham at

:11:56. > :11:59.7:55am. We have just the right now. It is 25-11. Next tonight, two

:11:59. > :12:08.independent hospitals that people with a learning difficulties have

:12:08. > :12:10.been given a deadline to improve or disclosure. The Care Quality

:12:10. > :12:16.Commission issued a formal warning to the owners after unannounced

:12:16. > :12:24.visits were made. This hospital beat Care Quality Commission found

:12:24. > :12:31.nothing on the scale found at other Castlebeck homes. Undercover

:12:31. > :12:35.filming by the BBC had previously revealed abuse. However, the

:12:35. > :12:39.patient's head did not always at safe care and there was

:12:39. > :12:43.inconsistent monitoring. At the other centre, care plans were

:12:44. > :12:47.judged inadequate and the health and welfare needs not met by a

:12:47. > :12:52.sufficient staff. Both facilities have and will September to show

:12:52. > :13:01.they have improved. If not, the commission has strong powers.

:13:01. > :13:06.can take further enforcement action. We could impose a condition on

:13:06. > :13:12.their registration so they cannot take any more people. We could also

:13:12. > :13:17.effectively close them down. Castlebeck Cook runs these

:13:17. > :13:22.hospitals say they are determined to make sure no further action will

:13:22. > :13:25.be required by the Care Quality Commission.

:13:25. > :13:27.People living in Nottingham whose homes and businesses were damaged

:13:27. > :13:29.during last week's riots may be able to claim compensation.

:13:29. > :13:32.Nottinghamshire Police Authority is liable for damage caused to

:13:32. > :13:36.buildings and contents in the course of a riot. However, damage

:13:36. > :13:38.or theft of a vehicle isn't covered, unless it was kept in a garage.

:13:38. > :13:48.Personal injuries and interruption to trading also don't qualify for a

:13:48. > :13:55.

:13:55. > :13:58.A cabinet minister has been heckled by some business leaders in Derby

:13:58. > :14:00.today. It came after the government's chief whip, Patrick

:14:00. > :14:02.McLoughlin, told them the government wouldn't change its

:14:02. > :14:05.decision to award a big rail contract to Siemens of Germany

:14:05. > :14:08.rather than Bombardier. It's the latest development in the campaign

:14:08. > :14:11.to save train-making in Derby. Half of its 3,000 workers already face

:14:11. > :14:21.redundancy. Our political editor can bring us up to date. John, what

:14:21. > :14:21.

:14:21. > :14:27.happened at this meeting? It was one of those breakfast briefings.

:14:27. > :14:33.It was to discuss the future of the rail industry. Among the guests

:14:33. > :14:36.invited was the Derbyshire Dales MP, Patrick McLoughlin. While in

:14:36. > :14:42.private he may be sympathetic to the Bombardier cause, he told the

:14:42. > :14:46.briefing to get real. The government had taken up its

:14:46. > :14:52.decision to awarding the contract to Siemens. That was not welcomed

:14:52. > :14:56.by some. And he was heckled. I am sure that did not go down well with

:14:56. > :15:02.the early morning coffee and croissants. What evidence is there

:15:02. > :15:08.the campaign is winning support? Derby City Council has commissioned

:15:08. > :15:11.a national polling organisation to carry out a survey on Bombardier

:15:11. > :15:16.losing the contract. Its findings showed two-thirds of the British

:15:17. > :15:21.public want the Government to reconsider giving Siemens the

:15:21. > :15:26.Thameslink contract will stop but 66% agree the government decision

:15:26. > :15:34.should be based on a best value for money. That Umar -- value for money

:15:34. > :15:39.has been ministers's main defence. At a time when a town hall budgets

:15:39. > :15:43.are tight, these polls are not cheap. A understand there are more

:15:43. > :15:47.details of a parliamentary inquiry into the awarding of that contract?

:15:47. > :15:51.The House of Commons Transport Committee has confirmed who it will

:15:51. > :15:55.be calling to give evidence on September seventh. All the key

:15:55. > :16:00.players will be there, including senior bosses from Bombardier and

:16:00. > :16:04.Siemens, officials from the European Commission, and ministers

:16:04. > :16:09.from the Department for transport. It will be a hot ticket. Those who

:16:09. > :16:15.cannot get a seat are likely to be outside Parliament for a big lobby

:16:15. > :16:25.in support of Bombardier work as. Plenty more to look forward to on

:16:25. > :16:34.

:16:34. > :16:44.the programme including Kylie First, Derby County have had their

:16:44. > :16:47.

:16:48. > :16:50.best start to the season for 63 years! Not many would have bet on

:16:50. > :16:53.them winning at Blackpool last night, but they did, so Kirsty

:16:53. > :17:01.Edwards has been to Derby today after that historic victory at the

:17:01. > :17:06.seaside. Car on it this Saturday, Derby will

:17:06. > :17:11.be taking on Doncaster. But who would have thought they would be

:17:11. > :17:15.going into the game with a perfect league record? Both sides went onto

:17:15. > :17:23.the pitch looking to maintain winning start to the League. It was

:17:23. > :17:31.Derby who came out on top. Eight free-kick was saved, and Craig

:17:31. > :17:37.Bryson was the first to react. has been a gamble. I do not know

:17:37. > :17:45.what I did when I scored, but it paid off!

:17:45. > :17:51.The Gaulle was reward for brides and who never stopped running.

:17:51. > :17:56.Incredible. He never stopped. It is difficult to pick out individuals.

:17:56. > :18:05.It's was a great night for the fans. I doubt many of them will remember

:18:05. > :18:14.such a good start of the season. In fact, the last time was way back in

:18:14. > :18:24.1948. The year the Olympics were last held in a London bus stop --

:18:24. > :18:28.

:18:28. > :18:34.last held in London. Rationing was still in place. And Nigel was still

:18:34. > :18:39.18 years away from being born. thought tonight was the best

:18:39. > :18:44.performance, taking into account everything we have come through. As

:18:44. > :18:52.a club, we are very proud to support this team. We are very

:18:52. > :18:58.proud of what we have achieved. A start to the season that will not

:18:59. > :19:01.be forgotten by the fans in a while. So a great start for Derby, but

:19:02. > :19:04.what about Leicester? Well Sven's men are struggling to live up to

:19:04. > :19:07.their pre-season billing as promotion favourites. The season

:19:07. > :19:16.has barely started but when you spend millions bringing in 11 new

:19:16. > :19:22.players, the last thing the fans expect are two home defeats in days.

:19:22. > :19:28.At the final whistle, the fans booed them off. After a two home

:19:28. > :19:34.defeats in a four days, the man to condemn less so was the striker's

:19:35. > :19:39.end has been tracing all summer, ironically. He scored a beauty

:19:39. > :19:44.after five minutes to increase his price tag. The only blemish for him

:19:44. > :19:50.it was a missed penalty just before half time. Leicester played better

:19:50. > :19:58.than Saturday, and David worked hard. His strike got Leicester back

:19:58. > :20:02.in the game. But Maynard showed cent exactly what he is missing by

:20:02. > :20:04.scoring a second Toothill the victory for Bristol City.

:20:05. > :20:08.He's one of the highest-paid British sportsmen in the world. You

:20:08. > :20:11.might not have ever heard of him, but basketball star Luol Deng is

:20:11. > :20:13.bigger in the United States than David Beckham. Loul plays for the

:20:14. > :20:23.Chicago Bulls and this week, he's been in Loughborough as Jeremy

:20:23. > :20:29.Nicholas reports. Luol Deng is Barack Obama's

:20:29. > :20:36.favourite sports star. Now he is putting something back, running a

:20:36. > :20:44.boot camp in Loughborough. I love basketball, I love helping people

:20:44. > :20:50.and kids. I want to see basketball get betting here in England. It is

:20:50. > :20:54.great. Really great. It is an inspiration to us young basketball

:20:54. > :20:57.players. Or his team-mates were trying out

:20:57. > :21:06.the basketball arena in the Olympic Park, he had been running his boot

:21:06. > :21:16.camp for a future Olympic hopefuls. I get up at 6am. I have to get to

:21:16. > :21:25.the gym before 7am. There is a training, then at dinner Bennett's

:21:25. > :21:29.bed by 9pm. A no better place to go them boot camp. Getting up, working

:21:29. > :21:33.out, eating together. Anyone out of line has to drop and

:21:33. > :21:38.give me 10. For more senior misdemeanours, it is the dreaded it

:21:38. > :21:48.run. Some people did not put their dining away this morning, so we had

:21:48. > :21:50.

:21:50. > :21:55.to run for a while! It is all worth it. When the kids come here, they

:21:55. > :21:58.become better players. Onto cricket. Rain meant there was

:21:58. > :22:01.little play in the Test match, and no play at all for Nottinghamshire

:22:01. > :22:04.at Somerset. But there has been play at Chesterfield where

:22:04. > :22:06.Derbyshire were bowled out for 190. Northants are now piling on the

:22:07. > :22:16.runs, while Leicestershire are 140 for 4, chasing the Glamorgan total

:22:17. > :22:25.

:22:25. > :22:29.Our weather forecast is just around the corner, but if you're wondering

:22:29. > :22:32.what to get up to over the next week, we have got a few ideas for

:22:32. > :22:42.you. As Kylie found out, if you love power and the countryside,

:22:42. > :22:46.

:22:46. > :22:51.this is one is for you! When I was a kid, I wanted to be a

:22:51. > :23:00.princess in a castle, but I am informed that the boys, this is

:23:00. > :23:06.what dreams are made of. Is a good to be allowed? And no. -- is it

:23:06. > :23:11.going to be allowed? When I was four years old, I used to go with

:23:11. > :23:15.my father, put it into gear, and of down the field while he was doing

:23:15. > :23:22.the farming. You can see detractors like this at

:23:22. > :23:26.the show at this Saturday, 20th August. Also on Saturday, the

:23:26. > :23:36.carnival is taking place in at Leicestershire. For some outdoor

:23:36. > :23:36.

:23:37. > :23:44.theatre, head to the Little Shop of horrors. All the -- all the Pirates
