:06:45. > :06:50.New figures released today reveal just how much the high street is
:06:50. > :06:54.suffering from the effects of the recession. The number of empty
:06:54. > :06:58.shops has increased in the last year from 10% up to 13%. In
:06:58. > :07:02.Nottingham city centre nearly a quarter of units are vacant. But
:07:02. > :07:10.while many cities and towns are suffering, some are doing better.
:07:10. > :07:16.Sarah Teale reports from one market town where business is booming.
:07:16. > :07:21.Riding out the recession is tough going for retailers. Too tough for
:07:21. > :07:28.some. In the past year as many businesses will do it, shop vacancy
:07:28. > :07:32.rates rose from 10% to 13%. Grantham was hit hardest in the
:07:32. > :07:37.East Midlands. It was recently labelled a ghost town. With the
:07:37. > :07:41.supermarkets blamed for sacking the shoppers out of the centre. Just
:07:41. > :07:48.under 20 miles away, things could not be more different. Melton
:07:48. > :07:53.Mowbray has just 22 of its 443 shops empty. We recognise that the
:07:53. > :07:59.recession has come in and it was going to be hard on the High Street.
:07:59. > :08:02.We took the initiative to do an empty shops scheme and start to

:08:13. > :08:21.town is now flying the flag for independent, niche retailers.
:08:21. > :08:28.chose Melton Mowbray because of the cast. In the larger cities it is
:08:28. > :08:34.much higher. The at Duke family set up their gift shop in February.
:08:34. > :08:41.is just a lovely traditional market town. There are so many things to
:08:41. > :08:46.attract people in. And the amount of coaches coming in is amazing. It
:08:46. > :08:50.has really helped us. But Melton Mowbray does seem to be bucking the
:08:50. > :08:55.trend. Are three main city centres are not faring so well. With much
:08:55. > :09:02.higher vacancy rates. Nottingham tops the list with 23% of its shops
:09:02. > :09:08.standing empty. Derby is next with 19.4% of its units vacant. And
:09:08. > :09:13.Leicester has 17% of its shops empty. The economic pinch is being
:09:13. > :09:19.felt. But back in Melton Mowbray the retailers are sure that trade
:09:19. > :09:20.in their town is on the up. It's almost a month now since
:09:20. > :09:26.violence broke out on a number of our city streets following the
:09:26. > :09:30.London riots. In Nottingham alone, more than 120 people were
:09:30. > :09:34.subsequently arrested. But police say they still need more help in
:09:34. > :09:37.tracking down those involved in one of the worst attacks. That attack
:09:37. > :09:42.was the firebombing of Canning Street police station. It's also
:09:42. > :09:49.emerged that the building wasn't the only thing to be targeted that
:09:49. > :09:56.night. Our reporter, Carolyn Moses, is there now.
:09:56. > :10:02.It all looks fairly normal now but this is Canning circus with the new
:10:02. > :10:07.lick of paint. But it does still show the scars of what happened a
:10:07. > :10:11.month ago. Here you can see where the window was hit. The glass has
:10:11. > :10:16.been replaced but four weeks ago, this was a building under attack.
:10:16. > :10:21.As these dramatic pictures show, they were captured by a mobile

:10:31. > :10:36.in that action but so far only around 15 have been traced and
:10:36. > :10:40.charge. Luckily no one was hurt in the attack but there was smoke
:10:40. > :10:45.damage and damage to the windows. And it was not just the police
:10:45. > :10:49.station, on that night the number of cars coming down the street
:10:49. > :10:54.opposite were also targeted. Some were hit and a taxi in particular

:11:14. > :11:19.mirror the level of disorder seen elsewhere in cities across the UK.
:11:19. > :11:22.Because we were prepared for it that evening. The level of policing

:11:33. > :11:39.for stock there are arrests going in tracing those responsible for
:11:39. > :11:43.this attack. How can people help? 15 people have been charged so far.
:11:43. > :11:48.Clearly there are offenders outstanding. So I appeal to members
:11:48. > :11:52.of the public, if they know flute was responsible then please contact
:11:52. > :11:58.Nottinghamshire police or contact Crimestoppers anonymously. If these
:11:58. > :12:02.people are confident enough to petrol bomb a police station I'm

:12:09. > :12:15.And a specific appeal - we you the station that was hit by a petrol

:12:31. > :12:35.light as to why it happened in the first place.
:12:35. > :12:40.Next tonight, more affordable housing needs to be built across
:12:40. > :12:43.the East Midlands. Some councils have been given money to get
:12:43. > :12:49.the leader of Leicestershire County Council, the cash isn't been spent

:12:54. > :13:03.daughter Maisie in their new home. They moved in a few months ago and
:13:03. > :13:08.pay rent to a social housing company. It means so much. We have
:13:08. > :13:15.lots of friends and family in the Village. And both sets of our

:13:51. > :13:56.councils aren't spending the cash. It can be infuriating. But it is

:15:06. > :15:10.the man they would like to speak to in connection with a robbery in
:15:10. > :15:15.Nottinghamshire. Last month a 16 year-old woman had cash stolen from

:17:51. > :17:54.Time to get excited about Olympic ticket sales again! This time it's
:17:54. > :17:58.Paralympic tickets which go on offer tomorrow. Those games are
:17:58. > :18:05.also expected to sell out. And round here, we have plenty of
:18:06. > :18:11.Sam and Ollie Hynd go for Gold. And Henshaw. She was part of a grand
:18:11. > :18:19.Square today. And when I caught up with her, it sounded like she was
:18:19. > :18:26.having fun. We have met some really nice people who have shown a lot of
:18:26. > :18:30.interest in the Paralympics which is always great. We were shown some
:18:30. > :18:35.demonstrations from the wheelchair basketball guys. It has been great.
:18:35. > :18:40.Just tell us what you are expecting from your games. Because you have
:18:40. > :18:46.this enormous rivalry with Liz Johnson in the pool. Well we have
:18:46. > :18:52.not qualified yet, we still have to do the trials in March. Assuming we
:18:52. > :18:56.both qualified than I think it will be a really good challenge to try
:18:56. > :19:01.to beat her. And then also the American in the mix there as well
:19:01. > :19:06.and other Australian girl. So it is claimed to be really exciting race
:19:06. > :19:09.between the four of us. It is important to say that the
:19:09. > :19:14.Paralympics are not at all second class, you will be able to generate
:19:14. > :19:18.just as much excitement as any at the Olympics will stop absolutely.
:19:18. > :19:22.The more people become aware of Paralympics swimming the more
:19:22. > :19:28.people will start to see that there are races that are so close, just
:19:28. > :19:33.as close as those that use the in the Olympic Games. The pattern is
:19:33. > :19:38.exactly the same and everyone wants to win that gold medal. There are
:19:38. > :19:43.some really exciting races to come in London. Are you going to bring
:19:43. > :19:49.the gold medal back to Mansfield's? I hope so. I have had some great
:19:49. > :19:58.success in the past couple of years. But it is never going to be easy to
:19:58. > :20:02.win a gold medal at the Paralympics. Good luck to Charlotte. Well, all
:20:02. > :20:11.across the region, people have been marking a year to go to the opening

:21:06. > :21:13.If they get their take legal right there will be all right. It is just
:21:13. > :21:20.getting used to not being able to see where you are. I usually get
:21:20. > :21:30.the call from the caller behind the post. And when the whistle goes I
:21:30. > :21:43.
:21:43. > :21:48.take the penalty. How was that? It is a totally
:21:48. > :21:56.different thing. You have to take your hat off to them because it is
:21:56. > :22:01.really difficult. The Leicester City team won 2 - nil. It is an
:22:01. > :22:07.opportunity to raise awareness of the sport and the chance to meet
