:00:08. > :00:13.This is East Midlands Today. Our top story: anti-capitalism

:00:13. > :00:17.protesters prepare for a long campaign. They have been occupying

:00:17. > :00:23.the market square for three weeks. They say they will still be here

:00:23. > :00:26.for Christmas but what have they achieved? Also tonight: the Derby

:00:26. > :00:33.cabbie who says he has been the target of racist vandalism.

:00:33. > :00:39.Plus finally open after years of fund-raising. A striking new Cancer

:00:39. > :00:45.Centre that feels a lot like home. And Noddy and I will be exploring a

:00:45. > :00:55.little-known tradition that comes around every November. It is the

:00:55. > :01:03.

:01:03. > :01:06.Good evening. Protesters who have set up camp in the centre of

:01:06. > :01:12.Nottingham it say they are preparing to spend Christmas there.

:01:12. > :01:17.It is part of that global campaign against financial inequality, but

:01:17. > :01:25.after almost three weeks camping out, what have they achieved?

:01:25. > :01:30.Jeremy Ball is in the Old Market Square. This camp has been growing

:01:30. > :01:36.over the last few weeks. There are more than 30 tents here now. They

:01:36. > :01:39.have just started their evening at 630 assembly. Some of these

:01:39. > :01:46.protesters come and go, some stay overnight but it is getting people

:01:46. > :01:53.talking. We do a lot for this country. If you think people do not

:01:53. > :01:57.care about politics, come and listen to this. All they want is to

:01:57. > :02:02.change the world. I have given up my warm bed and the comforts of

:02:02. > :02:08.home to come here because it needed doing. Somebody had to start that

:02:08. > :02:14.process of change and bring it home to Nottingham. Four we are talking

:02:14. > :02:19.about your granny with meals on wheels to the young mother next

:02:19. > :02:25.door and things that everybody can relate to. They are kitted out for

:02:25. > :02:31.the long haul. They have even brought the kitchen sink and they

:02:31. > :02:38.are digging in. We have a stove brought out of donations given to

:02:38. > :02:43.us. We can cook Christmas dinner. I have achieved a connection with the

:02:43. > :02:47.people of Nottingham that I did not feel the full. Even though I have

:02:47. > :02:52.lived here all my life. We have had a problem with some people's

:02:52. > :02:56.attitudes. No one is in charge here said they are meetings in the camp

:02:56. > :03:00.to help make decisions. Today's agenda the cleaning rota and how

:03:00. > :03:04.they will mark Remembrance Day. How do they answer the charge that it

:03:04. > :03:08.is pointless and that a protest like this will never change the

:03:08. > :03:13.financial system? A lot of us have hope because without the hope, it

:03:13. > :03:20.is a rather sad looking world. You have to try. Will you change the

:03:21. > :03:25.world? Yes eventually. The world will change and evolution through

:03:25. > :03:29.evolution is what we aim to achieve. It is a big ambition and they know

:03:29. > :03:34.there were people who think their demands are naive but it will not

:03:34. > :03:39.stop them trying. We have seen a huge row over plans

:03:39. > :03:43.to evict a camp just like this are outside St Paul's. Are the

:03:43. > :03:47.Nottingham protesters going to be made Don? Not at this stage. They

:03:47. > :03:52.have agreed to move voluntary from the other side of the Old Market

:03:52. > :03:57.Square, but I have spoken to the police and the council who say

:03:57. > :04:02.there are no plans to shut the Camperdown. There seemed to be good

:04:02. > :04:06.relationships with the authorities here. They are more worried about

:04:06. > :04:11.people coming To Town tonight, getting drunk and causing problems,

:04:11. > :04:18.so much so that some of the people have been running security teams to

:04:18. > :04:21.protect the camp. They say they are here for the long haul.

:04:21. > :04:26.A taxi driver says he and his family feel like prisoners in their

:04:26. > :04:31.own home after a string of attacks on their property. In the latest

:04:31. > :04:37.incident, racist graffiti was daubed on their driveway. Earlier

:04:37. > :04:44.this year a brand new car was set alight and destroyed. Police say

:04:44. > :04:47.they are treating the incidents very seriously.

:04:47. > :04:52.Halloway and is known for some mischief but this is much more

:04:52. > :04:58.sinister. Two dudes spray lettering on a driveway on Monday night

:04:58. > :05:04.before running away. Jagtar Shergill discovered the graffiti

:05:04. > :05:09.the next day. He is hoping the CCTV footage could help to identify the

:05:09. > :05:14.culprits. They are just cowards, doing something behind your back,

:05:14. > :05:18.picking on your kids. Earlier this year, reported higher brand new

:05:18. > :05:22.Mini used by his daughter was destroyed in a late-night arson

:05:22. > :05:28.attack. Those responsible were also caught on camera, but not brought

:05:29. > :05:32.to justice. After the arson attack, Jagtar Shergill decided to have

:05:32. > :05:37.electronic gates fitted to his property. They will be installed

:05:37. > :05:41.later this week and he says after this latest incident, it cannot

:05:41. > :05:46.come soon enough. He has also recently invested in more cameras

:05:46. > :05:52.and a dog to guard the family in their home. I am not the one that

:05:52. > :05:57.should be in prison. It seems like I am coming into a prison. We are

:05:57. > :06:03.treating this Ferris seriously. It is a racially aggravated offence

:06:03. > :06:07.where graffiti has been sprayed in this gentleman strive. The police

:06:07. > :06:15.say they will not more patrols in the area but Jagtar Shergill says

:06:15. > :06:21.he fears it will not prevent another attack on his home.

:06:21. > :06:24.Still to come: we will have a special guest in the studio -

:06:25. > :06:34.cricketer Graeme Swann will be joining Natalie for sport and there

:06:35. > :06:38.

:06:38. > :06:43.Traffic was brought to a standstill this morning after construction

:06:43. > :06:47.workers held a protest at the Ratcliffe Soar power station. The

:06:47. > :06:51.workers claim they have been told to sign new contracts or leave but

:06:51. > :06:56.the Unite union says the new contracts would merge grades and

:06:56. > :06:59.cut pay by 30 %. It will ballot its members on industrial action.

:06:59. > :07:04.The decision on the future of children's heart surgery at

:07:04. > :07:08.Leicester is expected in just over six weeks. The centre at Glenfield

:07:08. > :07:11.Hospital is one of several across England under threat as part of a

:07:11. > :07:15.government review. The Department of Health is considering which

:07:15. > :07:20.children's cardiac centres should be closed with the aim of creating

:07:20. > :07:25.fewer larger centres of excellence. An announcement is expected in

:07:25. > :07:29.December. Here are some good news, after four

:07:29. > :07:33.years of fund-raising and thousands of donations, a new support centre

:07:33. > :07:37.for people affected by cancer has officially open. International

:07:37. > :07:41.fashion designer Sir Paul Smith helped to the honours at the Maggie

:07:41. > :07:46.Centre in his home city of Nottingham. The eye-catching centre

:07:46. > :07:52.is run by a charity and aims to offer free, practical and emotional

:07:52. > :07:58.support to anyone affected by cancer.

:07:58. > :08:02.After years of fund-raising the the big day. Maggie's is opening. The

:08:02. > :08:06.eye-catching building has been likened to a giant teapot. To

:08:06. > :08:11.others it is a tree house. The inside has been styled by Paul

:08:11. > :08:16.Smith. Being a Brit we all like a cup of tea and we have put a lot of

:08:16. > :08:22.emphasis on the kitchen. He hopes the design will prove an ice-

:08:23. > :08:29.breaker. What I have tried to do is make it quirky. I understand it

:08:29. > :08:34.might not be to everybody's taste. This is one of the sitting REM's

:08:34. > :08:40.which is really lovely because it is very comfortable. A lot of

:08:40. > :08:44.muddied things are very shallow in the seat, very low but this one you

:08:44. > :08:49.can really get comfortable in. That is what I have tried to do in

:08:49. > :08:53.through the whole building. Optimistic colours, lots of things,

:08:53. > :08:58.conversation starters. Are you pleased to be associated with

:08:58. > :09:08.something in Nottingham? Yes. People have said, how has this carp

:09:08. > :09:12.about? They asked me. Nottingham lad born and bred. It is wonderful

:09:12. > :09:17.to be associated with it. architect said his dream was to

:09:17. > :09:21.create a magical meeting place. reads more homely than

:09:21. > :09:25.institutional, which is the important thing. That it should

:09:25. > :09:31.feel like a place that you are comfortable being in. Nottingham

:09:31. > :09:35.Post readers help make it possible raising over 600,000. We never

:09:35. > :09:41.thought it was a gamble because we've always thought the people of

:09:41. > :09:45.Nottingham would raise the money to build the centre. Sarah Brown, wife

:09:45. > :09:50.of Prom our Prime Minister of Gordon Brown, met a cancer patient.

:09:50. > :09:57.It is therefore everything. Financial advice, psychological

:09:57. > :10:02.support, advice on nutrition. is the essential link between

:10:02. > :10:07.diagnosis and answers - where do you go from here? Coup do you pass?

:10:07. > :10:14.At last with its eye-catching design, the Maggie's house in

:10:14. > :10:18.Nottingham is open. Leicestershire police say more

:10:18. > :10:25.people used its new it non- emergency number on Hannah wing. 75

:10:25. > :10:30.people have dialled one by one on the night. 61 calls the related to

:10:30. > :10:34.flour and eggs being thrown at houses. Officers handed out 60,000

:10:34. > :10:38.posters to elderly and vulnerable residents as part of a campaign to

:10:38. > :10:43.reduce anti-social behaviour. The supermarkets Sainsbury's says

:10:43. > :10:47.it plans to create 350 new jobs at West Bridgford in Nottingham. That

:10:47. > :10:51.is because it wants to build a new store there. The supermarket giant

:10:51. > :10:57.is proposing to redevelop the former Chateau pub side on Wilford

:10:57. > :11:00.Lane. It will have more than 600 parking spaces and so not -- solar

:11:00. > :11:05.panels. The company says it will be one of the most environmentally

:11:05. > :11:09.friendly stores in the UK. More than 300,000 adults in the

:11:09. > :11:13.East Midlands have dyslexia, a lifelong condition. As part of a

:11:13. > :11:17.series to mark National Dyslexia Awareness Week, Carol Hinds has

:11:17. > :11:23.been to meet two men who have very different approaches to living with

:11:23. > :11:28.dyslexia. Paul has two degrees. The Derby

:11:28. > :11:34.University graduate has not let his dyslexia hold him back. It is a

:11:34. > :11:38.colour associated dyslexia. I cannot see letters very well. I c a

:11:38. > :11:46.spectrum of colour, so if you see a page of words, I would see a

:11:46. > :11:52.rainbow. My involvement with Paul is to help our articulate his

:11:52. > :11:58.working words. Paul and I will talk through his ideas, his concepts and

:11:58. > :12:05.we will work towards putting, taking his words and I type them

:12:06. > :12:11.and write them and put them together. I can get the computer to

:12:11. > :12:16.play my e-mails that to me or at any text I need. It makes things a

:12:16. > :12:22.lot simpler. Steve Davis in Leicestershire were seven years old

:12:22. > :12:31.when he was diagnosed with dyslexia. Letters would get mixed up. Numbers

:12:31. > :12:36.would get mixed up. Reading aloud would be a massive issue. If

:12:36. > :12:41.someone said, can you read aloud, that would be horrendous. Almost 20

:12:41. > :12:46.years after being diagnosed, he saw a news item about this programme.

:12:46. > :12:51.They are doing physically exercise on a daily basis and repeating them

:12:51. > :12:57.and the aim is that is stimulating the cerebellum, which is the back

:12:57. > :13:02.part of the brain, the brain Skill Centre. This is one of the first

:13:02. > :13:08.exercises I had to do. I would have to keep my head straight, my eyes

:13:08. > :13:12.focused on the been back and throw it up, track, drop and catch.

:13:12. > :13:17.is working in the care industry and studying for qualifications. Paul

:13:17. > :13:27.is completing an arts project ahead of next year's Olympic Games. Both

:13:27. > :13:41.

:13:41. > :13:46.men have found a way to work with Today they planted a tree at Jesse

:13:46. > :13:52.Gray School in West Bridgford to mark the day of their celebrations.

:13:52. > :13:57.I enjoyed it very much. It was an honour to be part of it. It was

:13:57. > :14:06.really cool. We have never really met anyone from the Royal Family

:14:06. > :14:11.before. The cricket team said hello. They answer some questions. Saving

:14:11. > :14:18.to the Queen's cousin's wife was a great honour and I do not think we

:14:18. > :14:22.will ever do it again. Now to a tale of selflessness and generosity.

:14:22. > :14:27.A war veteran celebrating his 90th birthday has turned down offers of

:14:27. > :14:29.gifts, saying he wants donations to go to a charity instead. George

:14:29. > :14:38.Ellis Parkinson from Youlgrave in Derbyshire is supporting his local

:14:39. > :14:44.hospice. It was quite wonderful. Looking back on a remarkable life.

:14:44. > :14:50.George has been a greengrocer, worked on the railways and flew 14

:14:50. > :14:57.wartime sorties for the RAF. Now he wants to make a difference to other

:14:57. > :15:03.people's lives. It is difficult for my relatives. When they think, what

:15:03. > :15:07.can we buy him? I decided that the money would more -- would do more

:15:07. > :15:12.good at the hospice. His daughter says she is very proud. It is good

:15:12. > :15:18.that he is giving the money to the hospice because every little helps.

:15:18. > :15:26.It will help them. Hopefully, anybody that once had to go from

:15:26. > :15:32.the village or any body that we know, it will help them. George has

:15:32. > :15:37.lost two close friends recently who were cared for at hospices. This is

:15:37. > :15:43.a cheque for my birthday. Instead of getting presents, I asked for

:15:43. > :15:49.money. Thank you very much indeed. This will really help us care for

:15:49. > :15:54.our patients. I think he is an absolutely fantastic man. It is so

:15:54. > :15:59.generous and thoughtful. Donations like these from people like him, we

:15:59. > :16:02.really need them. In fact, we rely on them. They will make a huge

:16:02. > :16:07.difference to our patients and their families. It will allow us to

:16:07. > :16:15.continue to provide the care that we do. George hopes that in some

:16:15. > :16:21.small way, his contribution will help Brighton patients' lives.

:16:21. > :16:29.What a nice man! You are watching East Midlands Today. Still to come:

:16:29. > :16:37.all hail the humble banger, why Noddy is so laid bites of cities --

:16:37. > :16:41.Slade by sausages. Now sport.

:16:41. > :16:49.England cricket star Graeme Swann is with us. Did I tell you that you

:16:49. > :16:53.were co-presenting with me tonight? I thought I would be in the car

:16:54. > :17:03.park! Before we get chatting, and I guess you have a lot to talk about,

:17:04. > :17:05.

:17:05. > :17:09.let's look back at a truly amazing year for Swanny. He is the best

:17:09. > :17:13.spin bowler. He helped England to an Ashes win at the beginning of

:17:13. > :17:17.the year and an emphatic Test series win against India. He was

:17:17. > :17:22.ranked at the top one-day bowler in the world and was the only

:17:22. > :17:26.Englishman named in the one-day international team of the year. He

:17:26. > :17:29.is England's primary match-winner and the man who brought the

:17:29. > :17:32.sprinkler dance to the cricket field.

:17:32. > :17:42.We will chat about the sprinkler in a bit but first I know you have

:17:42. > :17:46.strong views on corruption in cricket. Three Pakistan cricketers

:17:46. > :17:50.in court today. What is your take on it? A it is obviously very

:17:50. > :17:56.disappointing. For the guys who pay -- played in the Test match on the

:17:56. > :18:01.England side, it was shopping at the time and it is shopping today.

:18:01. > :18:08.-- shocking at the time. criticised Salman Butt. Do you

:18:08. > :18:12.regret that now? Not really. We were very cheesed off. The

:18:12. > :18:16.integrity of the game was tarnished. It was very disappointing at the

:18:16. > :18:19.time and I do not think any of the England team have much sympathy for

:18:19. > :18:23.him these days. What about the comments in the but when you were

:18:23. > :18:28.so critical about your England colleagues? Do you regret to back?

:18:28. > :18:32.They are your friends and to play with them every day. I was not so

:18:32. > :18:38.critical about them. Some of the tabloid headlines made it out to be

:18:38. > :18:43.like that. That is serialisation for you. I think it was a fairly

:18:43. > :18:46.honest assessment. I spoke to them and it was not a character

:18:46. > :18:51.assassination. It was just me trying to put my points a cross

:18:51. > :18:56.from what I remember of those events. What about the way you have

:18:56. > :19:04.had? Ashes, India, he became a dad. How are you mixing live with

:19:04. > :19:11.cricket? -- life with a cricket? has been phenomenal, over the past

:19:11. > :19:16.12 months. Beating India 4-0. And reintroducing myself to my son

:19:16. > :19:21.every three or four weeks who cries every time he sees me. It takes me

:19:21. > :19:26.a few days to win him over. We have got two months at home now so why

:19:26. > :19:32.am looking up to -- looking forward to bonding with him. Here is some

:19:32. > :19:41.footage of the sprinkler. Some of the England lads. Who is the best

:19:41. > :19:51.at it? He is a born at natural. Stuart Broad was awful. There is

:19:51. > :19:54.the best, obviously! It was good fun. My video diary there. A way of

:19:54. > :20:01.alleviating the boardroom of being in a hotel room or winter. We are

:20:01. > :20:06.international Pabst -- dance sensations. Are you a football fan?

:20:06. > :20:16.I am a Newcastle fan. I like to follow their couple of the teams

:20:16. > :20:29.

:20:29. > :20:32.locally. Chesterfield. Derby County are in action tonight. They are at

:20:32. > :20:35.home to Cardiff this evening and then play at Peterborough on

:20:35. > :20:43.Saturday. Manager Nigel Clough is looking for a maximum points out of

:20:43. > :20:47.the next two games. For a we want to put a similar performance in as

:20:47. > :20:52.we have in the majority of home games.

:20:52. > :20:54.A victory for Derby tonight could take them up to third. Last night

:20:54. > :21:02.there were wins all round for Nottingham Forest and Leicester

:21:02. > :21:10.City. Here is Jeremy Nicholas. they have not lost a midweek home

:21:10. > :21:19.night fixture for 28 games. The Foxes Wedd took bids. -- work to

:21:19. > :21:25.good. A spectacular effort. Burnley's equaliser came after an

:21:25. > :21:31.unconvincing punch. It was headed straight back into the net. Burnley

:21:31. > :21:35.came close a few times to taking the lead. The Foxes battled on

:21:35. > :21:41.sharing a great team spirit and that at this header. The cross was

:21:41. > :21:47.a beauty but it still left them with a lot to do to head it into

:21:47. > :21:54.the goal. Leicester were awarded a penalty and Gallagher made no

:21:54. > :22:04.mistake to settle the match. At Forest, Steve is already doing

:22:04. > :22:06.

:22:06. > :22:11.better. Steve Cotterill has scored more than Steve McClaren. This colt

:22:11. > :22:15.was ruled out for offside. It was not quite enough from a Reading.

:22:15. > :22:19.Both sides had their chances in a game that seemed destined to be a

:22:19. > :22:29.draw. Reading had got lost in eight games previously. The goal finally

:22:29. > :22:37.

:22:37. > :22:43.came in the 68th 7th 67th minute. - - 67th minute. Leicester are doing

:22:43. > :22:50.well at the moment without a manager. A Geordie connection is

:22:50. > :22:56.Kevin Keegan. He may take over at the Foxes. I think it would be

:22:56. > :23:01.amazing. Lee Clark is a cracking young manager. I am not sure it

:23:01. > :23:09.would be easy to drag him a wave. There is always a place for Kevin

:23:09. > :23:16.Keegan in football. He was there in the glory years. Let us hand back

:23:16. > :23:21.to dominate. Brilliant! This week is pretty busy in the

:23:21. > :23:26.seasonal calendar. Hallowe'en a couple of days ago. Guy Fawkes like

:23:26. > :23:29.coming up. It is also a special pull something else. Not fireworks,

:23:29. > :23:35.but a bangers. It is National Sausage Week and expert sausage

:23:35. > :23:41.makers, they have been in Nottingham today hoping to be told

:23:41. > :23:45.that they have the best recipe in the region.

:23:45. > :23:51.You may be used to pork, beef or vegetable, but here there is no

:23:51. > :24:01.such thing as the humble sausage. I am in the kitchen where master
