:00:08. > :00:13.This is East Midlands Today, our top stories tonight: The new

:00:13. > :00:18.Transport Minister signals no change on Bombardier. Theresa

:00:18. > :00:22.Villiers visits the Derby works but came empty handed. What is the

:00:22. > :00:27.point of her coming? She made that statement, they are just playing

:00:27. > :00:33.with people's emotions, people's livelihoods. Also tonight, a city

:00:33. > :00:36.calls a halt to high rise student flats like this. I think it does

:00:36. > :00:40.profound damage, it is poorly designed as a building which is far

:00:40. > :00:43.too tall and is visible for miles around.

:00:43. > :00:46.Plus... ARCHIVE FOOTAGE: The cargoes of our

:00:46. > :00:55.bombers shattered military objectives in the City and start

:00:55. > :01:03.hundreds of fires. The campaign to honour those who died on Bomber

:01:03. > :01:09.Command duties. After 125,000 volunteers, 55.573 died. And the

:01:09. > :01:19.row over flying the Union Jack, it is flying again over Gamston

:01:19. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:26.Good evening, welcome to Monday's programme. First tonight, bitter

:01:26. > :01:30.disappointment. Their reaction there of union leaders today after

:01:30. > :01:34.a meeting with the Transport Minister Theresa Villiers at

:01:34. > :01:38.Bombardier in Derby. They have been hoping that she would announce some

:01:38. > :01:42.new work for the factory. She did not. But she did is express

:01:42. > :01:46.confidence and the company's future. -- but she did express.

:01:46. > :01:51.Facing the cameras, the Transport Minister spoke to the media after

:01:51. > :01:54.facing Bombardier and their supporters in Derby today. Without

:01:54. > :01:59.new work, it could be the end of the factory.

:01:59. > :02:03.Are you prepared to see this plant closed down? I will be fighting to

:02:03. > :02:06.keep this plant healthy and flourishing and that is why I am

:02:06. > :02:10.here, talking about the opportunities which I hope they

:02:10. > :02:13.will have in the months and years to come. Union leaders were hoping

:02:13. > :02:20.for announcements about new orders in the wake of the loss of the

:02:20. > :02:24.Thameslink contract and 1,400 jobs in Derby. None came. What is the

:02:24. > :02:33.point of her coming? They are just play with people's emotions and

:02:33. > :02:37.livelihoods. To go back in there now until -- and tell people she

:02:37. > :02:42.has got things, it is wasted. everything she has spoken about, we

:02:42. > :02:51.have heard before. She has done nothing to allay any fears for

:02:51. > :02:55.losses for our members at all. two coming contract I especially --

:02:55. > :03:00.are especially important. They are a 200 million contract from

:03:00. > :03:04.Southern Rail and a 120 million contract from cross country. It is

:03:04. > :03:08.claimed decisions have to be made on those contracts and quick. The

:03:08. > :03:12.club is ticking as far as Bombardier is concerned.

:03:12. > :03:16.Government must understand the urgency of dealing with these

:03:16. > :03:20.contracts and getting them out to tender as quickly as possible.

:03:20. > :03:30.Virtually all our engineers today are doing work that Bombardier has

:03:30. > :03:30.

:03:30. > :03:36.brought in to write the rest of the world. We cannot sustain that for

:03:36. > :03:40.much longer. No hope of reopening the Thameslink contract, too costly

:03:41. > :03:48.and too much delay, the minister said. Leaving behind an uncertain

:03:48. > :03:51.factory future. Next, a jury has heard how a

:03:51. > :03:59.householder who was attacked by an armed gang stabbed one of them to

:03:59. > :04:04.death. Napoleon Sharman said they came to his flat armed with

:04:04. > :04:12.baseball bats, and two people have gone on trial accused of aggravated

:04:12. > :04:16.The court heard this was all fronted by a domestic dispute that

:04:16. > :04:19.got completely out of hand. Napoleon Sharman had a turbulent

:04:19. > :04:25.relationship with his ex-girlfriend, so much that they both complained

:04:25. > :04:29.to the police and both wanted custody of their younger son. It

:04:29. > :04:32.all came to a head, the court was told, last Christmas after Napoleon

:04:32. > :04:38.Sharman sent an abusive text message. Three weeks later, he got

:04:38. > :04:42.a knock on the door at his flat. The court heard three men burst in

:04:42. > :04:46.and use baseball bat to give him a terrifying vicious beating so he

:04:46. > :04:53.used a knife to fend them off. Shortly afterwards, a man called

:04:53. > :04:58.Dean Lloyd was found bleeding to death outside. Today, two of

:04:58. > :05:01.delight's friends were accused of aggravated burglary. These are

:05:01. > :05:09.cousins of Mr Sharman's ex- girlfriends and both deny attacking

:05:09. > :05:13.him. Napoleon Sharman gave evidence but we were told he was initially

:05:13. > :05:16.arrested as well and questioned with regard to Dean Lloyd's death

:05:16. > :05:26.but the court was told he was never charged because it happened inside

:05:26. > :05:32.his property and that meant his Still to come on the programme, two

:05:32. > :05:35.boat, one bike, three continent. Adventurer Sarah Outen makes it to

:05:35. > :05:39.Japan for the hardest part which is still get to come.

:05:39. > :05:49.And a distinct lack of sunshine over the past week, what do we have

:05:49. > :05:51.

:05:51. > :05:56.in store this week, any sunshine? City councillors in Leicester have

:05:56. > :05:59.ordered a ban on new student housing developments in the city.

:05:59. > :06:06.Thousands of student flats have been built there in the past few

:06:06. > :06:10.Love it or hate it, this is one of the latest student housing blocks

:06:10. > :06:15.going up in Leicester and this is what it will look like when it has

:06:15. > :06:19.finished. 22 storeys high and home to hundreds of students. For a

:06:19. > :06:24.while at least, it will be one of the loft developments in the City

:06:24. > :06:27.as the council has temporarily stopped any planning applications

:06:28. > :06:31.for student development. We have a lot of people living in these areas

:06:31. > :06:35.who have lived there many years and we want to get a proper balance

:06:35. > :06:39.between the needs of those residents and the needs of this did

:06:39. > :06:46.and. Leicester is home to around 30,000 students and over the past

:06:46. > :06:50.few years, demand for housing has soared. In 2009/10, 987 flats were

:06:50. > :06:56.granted planning permission. Each one can house up to four students.

:06:56. > :07:01.The following year, that rose to just over 1,100 and November this

:07:01. > :07:07.year up to that date, 739 flats have been granted. For Stuart

:07:07. > :07:11.Bailey, the step is one step too far. It does profound damage. It is

:07:11. > :07:16.a poorly designed building that is far too tall and visible for miles.

:07:16. > :07:22.The developers believe the architect has created a fantastic

:07:22. > :07:25.design after that the consultation which will greatly enhance the area.

:07:25. > :07:30.Meanwhile in the city centre, there is a need for student housing to

:07:30. > :07:34.compete with the best. Students are expecting a higher quality of

:07:34. > :07:39.accommodation. Therefore it is important we have the right balance

:07:39. > :07:41.here in the City to offer to those students. We also must recognise

:07:41. > :07:45.that universities are in competition with each other.

:07:45. > :07:51.Ultimately, the city council hope that the moratorium will give it

:07:51. > :07:56.more control over the future of Leicester's landscape.

:07:56. > :07:58.In other news, a man has been arrested on suspicion of the

:07:59. > :08:02.attempted murder of a special constable. The woman had gone to

:08:02. > :08:06.deal with an incident on Shakespeare Street in Nottingham in

:08:06. > :08:10.the early hours of Sunday when she was hit by a car which was later

:08:10. > :08:16.found abandoned. She has undergone surgery for leg fractures and is in

:08:16. > :08:19.a stable condition. The 24-year-old man was arrested in Linby last

:08:19. > :08:26.night. Rolls-Royce have received engine

:08:26. > :08:36.orders of over 500 million, the Derby engine maker has celebrated

:08:36. > :08:39.

:08:39. > :08:43.after they bring its 1,000th Severn And the charity says there has been

:08:43. > :08:53.an unprecedented response for a recall for small bone marrow donors.

:08:53. > :08:54.

:08:54. > :08:59.Almost 2000 people queued around the Welford Road stadium, more than

:08:59. > :09:03.ever before. It came as an appeal to help Bethany Mickleburgh and Rik

:09:03. > :09:07.Basra. Thank you to everybody who did that.

:09:07. > :09:11.It is not often that parish politics hit the headlines but not

:09:11. > :09:18.often the issue of flying the Union Jacks but a British village either.

:09:18. > :09:22.Last week, we told to help residents of Gamston heard that

:09:22. > :09:28.some were offended by a flag flying all the time in the centre of the

:09:28. > :09:31.village. However, one councillor is threatening to resign if it is

:09:31. > :09:36.taken down. Our correspondent is there.

:09:36. > :09:40.The meeting has just started and is promising to sort out this issue

:09:40. > :09:45.once and for all. As you can see, the wood is flying tonight and that

:09:45. > :09:50.is because it is the Prince of Wales's birthday an official flag

:09:50. > :09:52.day-to-day. Let me remind you how this argument started. It was

:09:52. > :09:57.raised for the Royal Wedding earlier this year and flew until

:09:57. > :10:02.September. The council resolved to only fly it on special days.

:10:02. > :10:06.Towards the end of October, it was raised again to mark the death of a

:10:06. > :10:11.retired council and the intention was to keep it in place until today.

:10:11. > :10:15.But defence has been taken on both sides. One of those who object to

:10:15. > :10:19.it flying all the time is a villager called Roger Henry here

:10:19. > :10:24.with us tonight. Residue each label for joining us. Your heart

:10:24. > :10:30.opponents say they have received people supporting them from all

:10:30. > :10:35.over the word -- some people who are your opponents. It unnerved me

:10:35. > :10:41.to live in this area and have the Union Jack being flown all year

:10:41. > :10:47.round. Why does it unnerve you? Because a lot of extreme groups

:10:47. > :10:53.have hijacked the Union Jack and they have made it become something

:10:53. > :10:56.which they kind of own themselves. It has made it offensive to people

:10:56. > :11:00.of different cultures and ethnicities. Lots of people say

:11:00. > :11:04.this has nothing to do with far- right politics, everything due to

:11:04. > :11:12.do with patriotism, it is the British black. I totally appreciate

:11:12. > :11:16.that -- it is the British flag. I totally appreciate that but over

:11:16. > :11:24.the complete year, it is quite offensive. It is not a government

:11:24. > :11:27.building, which has the right to fly the flag and I feel strongly

:11:27. > :11:32.having the flag up all the time. will be back here tonight with our

:11:32. > :11:36.late bulletin when I will be talking to Mr Henry's main

:11:36. > :11:39.opponents and finding out about the result of the meeting. His main

:11:39. > :11:45.opponent has threatened to resign immediately if the flag does not

:11:45. > :11:50.fly all the time. A college has played host to

:11:50. > :11:55.another will visitor today. His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent

:11:55. > :12:02.this opening a creative art centre known as Create at Vision West

:12:02. > :12:06.Notts in Mansfield. It opened to September students in September.

:12:06. > :12:10.Three years ago, Prince Charles visited the college.

:12:10. > :12:13.And now for a company car with a difference, for one of, the Mayor

:12:13. > :12:18.of Leicester and his deputy are trialling and electric car as part

:12:18. > :12:22.of a pledge to make Leicester a low carbon City. They want to see how

:12:22. > :12:26.electric vehicles could be used as alternatives before the council and

:12:26. > :12:31.other local organisations. A team of Street Ambassadors is

:12:31. > :12:34.being introduced in Nottingham to welcome visitors to the city. They

:12:34. > :12:37.are able to give directions and recommend restaurants. The scheme

:12:37. > :12:45.is funded by local retail and leisure businesses and aimed to get

:12:45. > :12:49.more people shopping and eating out. Nice blue uniforms as well! As we

:12:49. > :12:52.reflect on remembrance for our and services, a former air man is

:12:52. > :12:57.campaigning for a memorial to thousands who died on bombing

:12:57. > :13:02.missions in World War II. Ted Cachart from Derbyshire says it is

:13:02. > :13:10.a disgrace that there is still not one for Bomber Command. 67 years

:13:10. > :13:19.after the war's end. The sales of a memoir I hope to put that right.

:13:20. > :13:24.Once a poor man, always a barman. 1:falsified his age to enter the

:13:24. > :13:28.RAF. He now regularly returns to Lincolnshire airfields from which

:13:28. > :13:33.his Lancaster bomber set off for its final mission in 1944. His

:13:33. > :13:37.plane collided with another Lancaster's, all tied's crew

:13:37. > :13:41.survived, none of the other crew did.

:13:41. > :13:45.Next weekend, he will again but at a bookshop in Ashbourne in

:13:45. > :13:49.Derbyshire to sign copies of his wartime memoir. The proceeds of the

:13:49. > :13:56.book will go towards the national memorial to all those bomber crews

:13:56. > :14:02.who died. In all, 55.573 lost their lives on

:14:02. > :14:06.Bomber Command. Out of 125,000 volunteers.

:14:06. > :14:12.The RAF's destruction of Dresden in Germany cast a long shadow over

:14:12. > :14:16.Bomber Command. A stigma attached to us but when people say why did

:14:16. > :14:26.you plummet to a close to the end of the war, but then you say, how

:14:26. > :14:33.

:14:33. > :14:37.do we know when the war would end? My own squadron alone, if you

:14:37. > :14:41.reverse the figures, you get 851, that is the number of people killed

:14:41. > :14:48.on my squadron alone. People do not realise the lives we have lost.

:14:48. > :14:58.the moment, fallen friends are remembered where they can, until

:14:58. > :15:02.

:15:02. > :15:06.the memorial is finally dedicated Still to come on the programme. The

:15:06. > :15:15.Power of Pudsey. How the money you donated to Children in Need last

:15:15. > :15:18.year made a difference to youngsters like Amar. Next tonight:

:15:18. > :15:20.great news from adventurer Sarah Outen. The 26 year old has

:15:20. > :15:24.completed the tricky first leg of her record-breaking human-powered

:15:24. > :15:27.loop of the globe. Two years ago Sarah was awarded an MBE after

:15:27. > :15:30.becoming the first woman to row solo across the Indian Ocean. Today

:15:30. > :15:40.she arrived in Tokyo after an epic expedition across land and sea.

:15:40. > :16:02.

:16:02. > :16:07.Sarah is trying to lead the globe. London to London. It has been full

:16:07. > :16:14.of highs and lows, and I suppose, there were times when I wondered if

:16:14. > :16:21.others going to make it this far. I it was going through the heat of

:16:21. > :16:31.the Gobi desert and bits of equipment going wrong in Russia. It

:16:31. > :16:31.

:16:31. > :16:41.has been brilliant. Sarah, from Rutland, has enjoyed the high

:16:41. > :16:52.

:16:52. > :16:55.wildlife. We up watching the bet. They have definitely been moments

:16:55. > :17:04.when I thought it was going to be when I thought it was going to be

:17:04. > :17:07.Since leaving London Sarah has cycled 11 thousand miles, travelled

:17:07. > :17:10.through 12 countries, and kayaked 300 nautical miles to reach Japan.

:17:10. > :17:13.But the most challenging stretch is still to come. Next spring she'll

:17:13. > :17:17.attempt to row the north Pacific Ocean - a feat never completed by a

:17:17. > :17:27.woman. After that she still has to cycle from Canada to New York and

:17:27. > :17:37.

:17:37. > :17:44.row the Atlantic Ocean to get back But right now, she gets a well

:17:44. > :17:54.deserved rest. London to Japan - Dick! She is extraordinary, that

:17:54. > :18:03.

:18:03. > :18:06.Notts County have been drawn away to non-league Sutton United in the

:18:06. > :18:10.second round of the FA Cup. That's after they thumped Accrington 4-1

:18:10. > :18:13.at the weekend. And Hinckley United will need to beat Tamworth in a

:18:13. > :18:19.replay, if they're to make it to a second round tie at Gateshead. Ross

:18:19. > :18:26.Fletcher reports. It was pretty easy for Notts County. Cole Holly

:18:26. > :18:36.scored twice. Alan Judge got the second. Alan Sheehan also got on

:18:36. > :18:38.

:18:38. > :18:44.the scoresheet. Hinckley survive their goalkeeper being sent off. A

:18:44. > :18:54.misjudgment from the keeper allowed an equaliser by Tamworth. Alfreton

:18:54. > :19:02.

:19:02. > :19:06.In Rugby, Leicester Tigers kicked off their Heineken Cup campaign

:19:06. > :19:08.with a solid win in Italy. First half tries from Tom Croft and

:19:08. > :19:11.Alesana Tuilangi set the platform for Tigers over Aironi and

:19:11. > :19:14.Leicester maintained their lead throughout. It was always hard work,

:19:14. > :19:17.though, and Tigers only really made the scoreline reflect the game with

:19:17. > :19:26.Niall Morris' try near the end. It's Ulster at home next - a very

:19:26. > :19:31.tough test indeed. Much more tense for Nottingham Rugby who needed a

:19:31. > :19:35.drop goal deep into injury time for their 23-20 cup win over Pontypridd.

:19:35. > :19:37.In ice hockey, the build up to the Panthers versus Steelers clash on

:19:37. > :19:41.Saturday night was totally justified by a storming game. Only

:19:41. > :19:46.one goal scored all night - and this was it - the second period, on

:19:46. > :19:52.the powerplay. Jordan Fox with a great setup. David Clarke with the

:19:52. > :19:55.goal. But it was the defence and goaltending that really won it -

:19:55. > :20:05.the highlight of Craig Kowalski's shutout seeing off a two man

:20:05. > :20:07.Sheffield advantage during the first period. Boxing, and Ovill

:20:07. > :20:09.McKenzie become commonwealth light- heavyweight champion over the

:20:09. > :20:13.weekend. The 31-year-old fighter from Derby knocked out Jeff Evans

:20:13. > :20:17.in fifteen seconds. Yes, winning the title took him about as long as

:20:17. > :20:20.it has taken me to tell the story. It's almost that time again - the

:20:20. > :20:22.BBC East Midlands Sports Awards are this Thursday night. Amongst the

:20:22. > :20:26.possible winners, three amazing people who could be our unsung hero

:20:26. > :20:36.of 2011. You'll get to find out what makes them so special this

:20:36. > :20:37.

:20:38. > :20:44.week and tonight we start in Newark. Move your boats slowly! Don't!

:20:44. > :20:48.Let's see them get on to the end. Julie works tirelessly with

:20:48. > :20:54.disabled children and their families. She runs canoeing and

:20:54. > :21:00.kayaking sessions. Well done guys! Don't fall behind. That's excellent.

:21:00. > :21:10.Many of the people she helps are wheelchair-bound, but when they are

:21:10. > :21:19.

:21:19. > :21:26.I am in awe of some other people who come canoeing. Amount of

:21:26. > :21:33.commitment she gives is awe- inspiring. She works full-time as a

:21:33. > :21:39.paediatric physiotherapist. But at weekends, she is encouraging these

:21:39. > :21:45.children. They have a lovely lifestyle, which will keep them fit

:21:45. > :21:50.and healthy for as long as possible. Julie's were does not stop in the

:21:50. > :21:54.water. She has even built a gym in her back garden. The idea is that

:21:54. > :21:59.we keep them fit as possible, so when they get back out on the water,

:21:59. > :22:09.they will be fit and ready for next season. Without Julie, I would not

:22:09. > :22:10.

:22:10. > :22:14.have got into sport. It has helped me get to a high level. She has

:22:14. > :22:24.helped me so much in my life, and I thank her so much. Julie's hard

:22:24. > :22:27.

:22:27. > :22:30.work and dedication has inspired This Friday it's Children in Need

:22:30. > :22:33.day and as usual we're hosting our very own Pudsey Party - this time

:22:33. > :22:36.at Loughborough University And, as usual, we're hoping to raise as

:22:36. > :22:45.much money as possible because it makes such a huge difference to all

:22:45. > :22:48.sorts of charities here in the East Midlands. Karen Winchester has been

:22:48. > :22:51.to one such project in Leicester where they're helping boost the

:22:51. > :23:01.confidence and social skills of children with special needs. Meet

:23:01. > :23:05.

:23:05. > :23:09.Amar and his support worker Surbjit. This is good great adventure

:23:09. > :23:19.playground in Leicester. It is for special needs children. It is a
