:00:55. > :00:58.Our top story tonight - some good Good evening and welcome to the

:00:58. > :01:03.programme. First tonight a significant jobs boost for the East

:01:04. > :01:09.Midlands. Toyota at Burnaston is to create

:01:09. > :01:12.1,500 new jobs over the next two years. And that's not all. Nestle

:01:12. > :01:15.is to create 300 new jobs at ITS factory in South Derbyshire. The

:01:15. > :01:18.Prime Minister was on hand to congratulate workers during pre-

:01:18. > :01:22.arranged visits to both factories earlier today. David Cameron said

:01:22. > :01:27.it was a vote of confidence in the skills and expertise of the local

:01:27. > :01:37.workforce. Let's join our Political Editor

:01:37. > :01:44.

:01:44. > :01:51.John Hess who's at Toyota's factory There are just under 3,000 people

:01:51. > :01:59.working here and last year getting on for 137,000 cars were made, most

:01:59. > :02:04.for export. After recent turbulence, the future is well and truly

:02:04. > :02:09.secured. Joining the production line, a

:02:09. > :02:14.Prime Minister and a car maker battered by in economic storm.

:02:14. > :02:20.David Cameron flanked by Toyota workers was all smiles. 1,500 new

:02:20. > :02:26.jobs created at the plant. It is your success, a vote of confidence

:02:26. > :02:30.and jobs invested for the future. The impact of the global recession

:02:30. > :02:35.and the future of Toyota's operation in doubt, not now. Its

:02:35. > :02:40.new hatchback will be made here. is the right time to decide to

:02:40. > :02:46.produce more in Europe, localised production and concentrate in the

:02:46. > :02:50.UK to make -- create extra jobs in the coming years. The Prime

:02:50. > :02:55.Minister told the production line - - toured the direction line. He

:02:55. > :02:58.told me he wants a renaissance in manufacture. The government is

:02:58. > :03:03.helping with low taxes, deregulation and keeping the

:03:03. > :03:08.markets open. The significance of the Prime Minister's visit is to

:03:08. > :03:15.promote UK manufacturer but what about the importance of another

:03:15. > :03:20.manufacturer, bombarded a? I pledge to people in Derbyshire

:03:20. > :03:23.that will work with them to help them bid for new contracts. We are

:03:23. > :03:29.putting money into new trains and tracks and carriages and there will

:03:29. > :03:33.be opportunities for at the great business. Toyota or will start

:03:33. > :03:39.recruiting new staff and next year. Could this be an early sign of

:03:39. > :03:45.economic revival? The Prime Minister then it took the

:03:45. > :03:53.15 mile drive to South Derbyshire to celebrate another jobs boost.

:03:53. > :03:57.Nestle is taking on a 300 more workers a thanks to investment.

:03:57. > :04:02.After Toyota, the Prime Minister stopped for a coffee break and a

:04:02. > :04:06.chat at Nestle. The number one priority is growth and jobs. And he

:04:06. > :04:11.had every reason to be full of beans. Talking to work force which

:04:11. > :04:17.has trebled in size exporting coffee to 38 countries. Nestle is

:04:17. > :04:22.still digging in at home in Derbyshire, to investing a further

:04:22. > :04:28.110 million to keep up with demand. That means another 300 jobs. They

:04:28. > :04:31.will be well trained and technical jobs. We are also committed to

:04:31. > :04:35.giving our engineers and technicians a lifetime of learning

:04:35. > :04:39.so you can join us at 16 and work through to come out with a

:04:39. > :04:45.foundation degree and go onwards and upwards. Three new production

:04:46. > :04:50.lines will treble capacity. In the past, it has had trouble finding

:04:50. > :04:56.the right blend of skills so a new training academy will focus on jobs

:04:56. > :05:01.for graduates and young apprentices. For jobseeker's and the Prime

:05:01. > :05:05.Minister, Nestle and twitter have provided 1800 reasons to be

:05:05. > :05:13.cheerful. That is how many new opportunities will be created in

:05:13. > :05:20.the coming months for people to find work.

:05:20. > :05:24.That here and twitter and I am joined by the deputy managing

:05:24. > :05:31.director of the UK manufacturing at twitter. This is not just an

:05:31. > :05:40.endorsement of Toyota or -- twitter in the UK, also the supply chain.

:05:40. > :05:47.Yes, Toyota UK has 50 manufacture and suppliers with which we spent

:05:47. > :05:52.870 million each year. So, those companies will be investing 85

:05:52. > :05:58.million as a result of this announcement. In terms of the jobs,

:05:58. > :06:02.you will be recruiting, I am aware Jaguar Land Rover is recruiting,

:06:02. > :06:08.are those skills out there when it comes to recruiting people? I think

:06:08. > :06:12.so. We have a big catchment area within 45 minutes and we will

:06:12. > :06:16.trainee. If you come here, we will train you and trainee for a long-

:06:16. > :06:22.term career. Does this underscore the imported steel of manufacturing

:06:22. > :06:28.in the UK? Absolutely. UK is a good place to make things and make cars.

:06:28. > :06:32.We are internationally competitive now. Good to hear. It looks as

:06:32. > :06:38.though the work on the new car coming here will start in at just

:06:38. > :06:42.under two years. The news of the job announcement

:06:42. > :06:47.has been welcomed in Dobby which has seen several major redundancy

:06:47. > :06:51.announcements recently. -- in Derby. There was cynicism that the Prime

:06:52. > :06:55.Minister did not pay a visit in darker days.

:06:55. > :07:01.East Midlands Today has learnt they could be more good news on the jobs

:07:01. > :07:05.front for the city. In Derby they are proud of the

:07:05. > :07:13.city's connections with a helping to build planes, trains and

:07:13. > :07:19.automobiles. Add plenty of good news on the four will front. Some

:07:20. > :07:25.criticism of the Prime Minister did not call in to bombard the AA. A

:07:25. > :07:30.worker lives in Burnaston next to twitter. It follows good news where

:07:30. > :07:35.it is easy to turn up at a factory and a senior jobs when there is a

:07:35. > :07:38.place down the road where they are announcing a 1,400 job losses.

:07:38. > :07:43.Those are the places he should be visiting, they need reassurance and

:07:43. > :07:49.comforting. The council leader is meeting David Cameron at a number

:07:49. > :07:53.10 reception this evening. government have got the message and

:07:53. > :07:58.will try to deliver the new contracts which will enable us to -

:07:58. > :08:04.- then to run in the city. The jobs at twitter and Nestle, this is

:08:04. > :08:10.going to get Derby City moving. Hundreds of jobs were also lost in

:08:11. > :08:13.Derby this summer with the break-up of the internet bank, egg. We

:08:13. > :08:18.understand a major call-centre operator is on the verge of

:08:18. > :08:24.agreeing to take over half of this site. If it goes ahead, it will

:08:24. > :08:31.provide many more much-needed jobs and could guarantee another high-

:08:31. > :08:36.profile political visit. Not such good news in

:08:36. > :08:43.Leicestershire tonight. A factory is to close with the loss of 155

:08:43. > :08:48.jobs. The standard soap factory was formed in 1928 but in 1995 was

:08:48. > :08:54.taken over by a Malaysian company which produces a Crabtree and

:08:54. > :08:58.Evelyn. It is expected to shatter Christmas.

:08:58. > :09:05.You are watching East Midlands Today. Still to come: the flicks,

:09:05. > :09:13.ticks and tricks to take this quite conned a teenager to the Olympics.

:09:13. > :09:16.-- taekwondo. Around 20,000 people lined the

:09:16. > :09:22.streets of Leicester today to welcome a soldier's home from

:09:22. > :09:25.Afghanistan. After being greeted by the cheering crowds, they were

:09:25. > :09:35.granted the freedom of the city. Our social affairs correspondent

:09:35. > :09:39.reports. An ancient military tradition these

:09:39. > :09:42.soldiers have been fighting a modern war. They march through

:09:43. > :09:48.Leicester carrying lances and wearing ceremonial uniforms and

:09:48. > :09:52.they were followed by two of the tanks they used in Afghanistan.

:09:52. > :09:58.This is a chance for the people to welcome the Richmond home. There

:09:58. > :10:02.are thousands lining the streets today. Look at the reception.

:10:02. > :10:06.coming to see my cousin back from Afghanistan. I want to see him

:10:06. > :10:11.marching. A we have to support them as much as we can. They are

:10:11. > :10:18.brilliant. Really proud of what they have done. Shame they're

:10:18. > :10:27.coming back with injuries. Really proud. My father was killed in the

:10:27. > :10:37.second world war. It is really emotional. There was a formal

:10:37. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:42.inspection. Order! And then they were given the freedom of the city.

:10:42. > :10:47.I had a tear in my eye. The atmosphere it is a treat. It's

:10:47. > :10:53.really good. When people turn out in the crowds, it makes you proud

:10:53. > :10:57.to be a soldier. And what to stand for. They spent six hot months

:10:57. > :11:00.protecting part of Helmand Province trying to get locals on side. They

:11:01. > :11:05.have been fighting battles against the Taliban and a convinced it's

:11:05. > :11:09.making a difference. The guys are happy with what they achieved. They

:11:09. > :11:15.can do to the markets and see the locals do not feel local insurgency

:11:15. > :11:23.punishing them. It is the happiness of the local individuals is plain

:11:23. > :11:27.to see. It has been years since the East Midlands has seen a crowd this

:11:27. > :11:37.size for a homecoming parade and the support means so much for the

:11:37. > :11:39.

:11:39. > :11:49.In other news: a man arrested in connection with a tap-in has been

:11:49. > :11:52.released on bail. The two men were injured on Charles statement that.

:11:52. > :11:59.But when tipped and arrested yesterday in London was released on

:12:00. > :12:05.bail. A woman's desperate wait for a

:12:05. > :12:13.captain dropped. They then, are apt want the option

:14:09. > :14:15.You are watching East Midlands today eat. It has been the driest

:14:15. > :14:18.year for their kids. Statements have seen only half as much

:14:18. > :14:21.rainfall as usual. And for some places that dry

:14:21. > :14:24.weather is costing a small fortune. As Paul Bradshaw reports, St

:14:24. > :14:30.Peter's church at Thornton is in danger of becoming the leaning

:14:30. > :14:38.tower of Leicestershire. Are are all winners in force when

:15:03. > :15:08.the beginning of the. As bigger up the tail, there is water. Unchecked,

:15:08. > :15:18.it is it that it will split from the church, a problem that will

:15:48. > :15:58.important because it that the future. It is hoped that after the

:15:58. > :16:05.work is completed, because will be able to run for many years to come.

:16:05. > :16:09.A lovely church. In a moment, we will be going down

:16:09. > :16:13.the market. And what a difference a year makes,

:16:13. > :16:23.this time last year we were covered in snow. It is not the same story

:16:23. > :16:28.

:16:28. > :16:32.this year. We have a bond of rain There's nothing quite like the

:16:32. > :16:37.atmosphere of a thriving market. And it's often the best place to go

:16:37. > :16:39.for cheap, good quality food. So, shoppers and stallholders in

:16:39. > :16:43.Leicester might be forgiven for feeling a little anxious about

:16:43. > :16:53.plans to transform their centuries old market. I've been to find out

:16:53. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :16:59.more. I think this to be well the best

:16:59. > :17:03.fruit and vegetable markets in a country. But changes of but and the

:17:03. > :17:10.stall holders are hoping they will be for the but, and they don't

:17:14. > :17:19.since the bid of concentration will not be known until next month. It

:17:19. > :17:26.seems stall holders want improvements to their stalls and

:17:26. > :17:33.then stopped not that keen on the act since these indoor mock it. All

:17:33. > :17:43.agreed this to be tapped. Got to get it right. We at a big customer

:17:43. > :17:43.

:17:43. > :17:53.base. For many of the stall holders, the market really is a, after. -- A

:17:53. > :17:55.

:17:55. > :17:58.family affair. Changes off her name. On you can sit? A lot at all.

:17:58. > :18:02.city council and stall holders to and always see eye-to-eye are put

:18:03. > :18:08.on his, this is deep and hit agreement sent off. We want to make

:18:08. > :18:11.it better, more vibrant and walked to stick the public. A place where

:18:11. > :18:20.traders will want to come and do this and what people will want to

:18:20. > :18:23.shock. All those whom of the mock it, there is a chance to question

:18:23. > :18:27.of the one about the changes tomorrow on BBC Radio Leicester

:18:27. > :18:37.form of May am. There is a card is apt on my

:18:37. > :18:50.

:18:50. > :18:53.It is quite why it for me today. News of a pretty dead football loan

:18:54. > :18:56.deadline day. The window shut nearly two hours ago and the only

:18:56. > :18:59.move at our clubs was confirmation that striker Tamas Priskin had,

:18:59. > :19:02.indeed, arrived at Derby County - helping solve a major striker

:19:02. > :19:09.crisis at Pride Park. Elsewhere though, managers seem content to

:19:09. > :19:16.work with what they have at least until the January transfer window.

:19:16. > :19:20.Do we need numbers? Not just some the. We've got plenty of us. Could

:19:20. > :19:27.it does the balance of the squad? Possibly but apt to bring there is

:19:27. > :19:37.an for the sake of it. Export a couple possibilities -- we have

:19:37. > :19:39.

:19:39. > :19:42.explored. If week and once somebody, it would be... One of the joys of

:19:42. > :19:45.sport is watching an under the radar athlete come from nowhere to

:19:45. > :19:48.get success. And ahead of next year's Olympic Games in London, we

:19:48. > :19:58.could have one of those emerging stars from right here in the East

:19:58. > :19:59.

:19:59. > :20:09.Midlands. Ross Fletcher's been to Manchester to see him in action.

:20:09. > :20:34.

:20:34. > :20:44.This is what or limpet had wandered You have to be explicit and focused.

:20:44. > :20:49.

:20:49. > :20:58.-- you have to be explosive. It was ecstatic. This was but I was

:21:41. > :21:48.- London 2012. A it is very competitive. At the end of the day,

:21:48. > :21:58.it is a selfish act. Ribbon as the big tournaments to prove his worth

:21:58. > :22:06.

:22:06. > :22:12.As winter draws on, do you like to stay put and embrace the chilly

:22:12. > :22:15.weather or would you prefer to jet off to warmer climes? Whether

:22:15. > :22:18.you're taking off or not - there have already been thousands of

:22:18. > :22:28.arrivals and departures in the bird world. Sally Pepper Goes Wild again

:22:28. > :22:41.

:22:41. > :22:45.It has been a few months but we are back at Rutland Water with the

:22:45. > :22:51.project officer. Last time, the Ospreys had made their return from

:22:51. > :22:56.their winter migration to Africa. They really are amazing birds. They

:22:56. > :23:01.have made their winter migration again. Yes, they are wintering in a

:23:01. > :23:05.tropical West Africa and today you cannot blame them! We were lucky

:23:05. > :23:10.this year because we have followed them on their migration and one of

:23:10. > :23:15.them reached the South of Guinea in 14 days. He flew from Rutland down

:23:15. > :23:21.towards London and across the Channel to Paris and fished in the

:23:21. > :23:25.River Seine and then carried across branch, the Pyrenees, Spain and he

:23:26. > :23:32.flew past Madrid and then across the Mediterranean into North Africa.

:23:32. > :23:39.And then across the Sahara. And then down into the tropics and into

:23:39. > :23:44.Guinea where he will spend the next few months. So, we have seen the

:23:44. > :23:51.amazing journey the Ospreys have taken to warmer climes. It has made

:23:51. > :23:54.room for thousands of ducks. Yes, it is a dark cavern. We counted

:23:54. > :23:59.around 30,000 ducks around the reservoir which was the most we

:23:59. > :24:03.have recorded. Where are they flying from? They are coming from

:24:03. > :24:09.all over continental Europe, some ducks we have come from Russia,

:24:09. > :24:16.they might be flying 1,500 miles, some might have come from northern

:24:16. > :24:23.Germany or Sweden. The shoveler has a great big beak. It filters the

:24:23. > :24:30.water so it uses it to sift out the aquatic invertebrates. There is

:24:30. > :24:37.another duck, an incredibly important place, they look a bit

:24:37. > :24:41.plain, they are the grey ones. The females are more Brown. They have a

:24:41. > :24:48.white flash on the sides. Rutland Water is the most important site in

:24:48. > :24:53.the UK for them and we counted something like 2,400 which was the

:24:53. > :25:00.maximum count ever recorded at a single site in the UK. Rutland

:25:00. > :25:06.Water is breaking the records. After a typical gloomy November

:25:06. > :25:14.date at Rutland Water, I am freezing. For the ducks they are

:25:14. > :25:19.finding is almost tropical. Let's get a cup of tea. Let's do it.

:25:19. > :25:28.looked lovely in the mist. Rutland Water is always beautiful. It was a

:25:28. > :25:34.lovely report. Gorgeous. I cannot believe it is a year ago we had

:25:34. > :25:42.snow. Gritting the roads. getting to work. Very different now.

:25:42. > :25:47.There is none of that on the There is a chance of some snow. We

:25:47. > :25:52.will notice a dramatic change in what we have been experiencing. A

:25:52. > :25:57.very mild day to day. This was the satellite picture. This was the

:25:57. > :26:01.country a year ago, virtually covered in snow. A little bit of

:26:01. > :26:11.green peeping through. We have a slightly different picture today. A
