:00:11. > :00:14.This is East Midlands Today with Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies.

:00:14. > :00:23.Our top story tonight: a convicted crime boss pulls the strings, from

:00:23. > :00:28.his prison cell. A bleak future for closer

:00:28. > :00:33.threatened maternity units. Some women feared the worst. My baby was

:00:33. > :00:36.born quite quickly. If it had happened to me, my husband

:00:36. > :00:39.delivering my baby would not have been ideal.

:00:39. > :00:47.We speak to the residents who have not had there been as collective

:00:47. > :00:50.more than two-and-a-half weeks. -- their bins collected.

:00:50. > :00:55.And the pop star singing the praises of their community

:00:55. > :01:05.recording studio. Fame isn't about money, it is about what you can do

:01:05. > :01:08.

:01:08. > :01:14.with your fame, the positive things Good evening and welcome to

:01:14. > :01:18.Monday's programme. First tonight, a gang boss convicted of murder has

:01:18. > :01:20.won the right to demand the names of officers who write reports about

:01:20. > :01:23.him. He wants to know who is compiling

:01:23. > :01:27.his record as he serves a life sentence in a high security prison.

:01:27. > :01:31.Colin Gunn ran a gang in Nottingham blamed for giving the city its

:01:31. > :01:35.reputation for gun crime. He was finally jailed for ordering the

:01:35. > :01:38.murders of John and Joan Stirland in a vendetta killing. Gunn's

:01:38. > :01:43.serving 35 years, currently in the high security Belmarsh prison in

:01:43. > :01:48.London. It's there he complained that prison officers' names and

:01:48. > :01:50.other information were withheld from copies of his record. The

:01:50. > :01:55.Prisons and Probation Ombudsman agreed and Belmarsh has now

:01:55. > :01:58.arranged to give him uncensored copies.

:01:58. > :02:06.Well, our chief news reporter Quentin Rayner joins us now. What's

:02:06. > :02:08.behind his demand? Colin Gunn complained that since

:02:08. > :02:14.being at the high security Belmarsh prison, reports written about him

:02:14. > :02:16.didn't include names of the prison officers who'd written them. He

:02:16. > :02:22.said officers' names hadn't been removed at his previous high

:02:22. > :02:24.security jail. So he complained to the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

:02:24. > :02:28.The Prison Service advised the ombudsman that information should

:02:28. > :02:31.only be redacted in exceptional circumstances. So the ombudsman

:02:31. > :02:37.asked Belmarsh to review the records given to Gunn and a

:02:37. > :02:45.governor there decided that he should receive unredacted copies.

:02:45. > :02:48.How did this come to light? The ruling was actually made in May of

:02:48. > :02:51.this year but it's only just come to the public's attention. Because

:02:51. > :02:53.a letter from Gunn has been published in this month's edition

:02:53. > :02:57.of Inside Time, the national newspaper for prisoners. In it he

:02:57. > :03:00.wrote: I know that prison staff up and down the country must hate the

:03:00. > :03:04.thought of us being able to actually see who has written what

:03:04. > :03:07.about us and will try to tell us we are not entitled to see names and

:03:07. > :03:10.redacted information but this is 100% wrong. I hope this will be of

:03:10. > :03:13.help to others. The ombudsman ruled that the names of prison staff

:03:13. > :03:16.should only be removed if there is reasonable expectation that bodily

:03:16. > :03:23.safety or even life itself are put at risk, but the Prison Officers'

:03:23. > :03:26.Association isn't reassured. If the ruling is put in force to

:03:26. > :03:29.the letter, and there is a knee- jerk reaction to it, and every

:03:29. > :03:32.prisoner in a country is good in the name of every single prison

:03:33. > :03:38.officer it has ever made an entry about them or give any information

:03:38. > :03:43.about them, it could place prison officers in severe jeopardy for

:03:43. > :03:47.their safety. Now this isn't the first time the ombudsman has ruled

:03:47. > :03:49.in Colin Gunn's favour. Last year he won the right to be called Mr

:03:49. > :03:55.Gunn by prison officers, complaining he wasn't being treated

:03:55. > :03:59.with respect. The future of two midwife-led

:03:59. > :04:02.maternity units in the Derbyshire will be decided this week. The NHS

:04:02. > :04:05.wants to close the Darley Birth Centre near Matlock and a similar

:04:05. > :04:15.facility in Buxton. It says both units are relics from the past and

:04:15. > :04:16.

:04:16. > :04:22.too expensive to keep open. A Maisie came into the world nine

:04:22. > :04:27.months ago. She was born at the Darley Dale birth centre near

:04:27. > :04:34.Matlock. Her mother got what she wanted, a natural birth and she had

:04:34. > :04:42.no pain relief. It was fantastic. I had a really easy second birth and

:04:42. > :04:46.no complications, no problems. family value the Birth Centre so

:04:46. > :04:52.much that they have decided to spread the world -- spread the word

:04:52. > :04:57.of a unit under threat. I did a big bike ride, without leaving

:04:57. > :05:03.Derbyshire. The primary care trusts says it doesn't doubt people's

:05:03. > :05:08.affection for the unit but says there are simply not enough birth.

:05:08. > :05:14.In the last 12 months, only 100 people have used it. Have you been

:05:14. > :05:20.winding its down? At its best it would have been 150 or 160. The

:05:20. > :05:26.guidance we have is that around 300 makes basis Bain the ball -- makes

:05:26. > :05:32.a sustainable Birth Centre. Could it be marketed before? That has

:05:32. > :05:37.been done before. We don't think they are marketed fit enough before.

:05:37. > :05:43.This meeting in 1980 it closed similar units in other towns. In

:05:43. > :05:47.fact, there are now just four stand-alone midwife Redberth units

:05:47. > :05:50.in our region. Darley Dale sells itself with a birth pool and mood

:05:50. > :05:53.lighting. Today's weather has done little to lift the mood of

:05:54. > :05:58.campaigners and it might not be the only winter gloom they have to put

:05:58. > :06:08.up with if Wednesday's closure recommendations go through. Still

:06:08. > :06:09.

:06:09. > :06:16.to come on the programme: a hidden army of young carers.

:06:16. > :06:19.A normal childhood for Sophie means caring for her disabled mum. She

:06:19. > :06:24.says it's no big deal but, as you'll, see it it ia, for Sophie

:06:24. > :06:27.and thousands like her. British police officers have

:06:27. > :06:30.travelled to Spain in the hunt for Madeleine McCann. Madeleine from

:06:30. > :06:33.Rothley disappeared in Portugal four years ago. Scotland Yard

:06:33. > :06:36.detectives were asked by the Prime Minister to review the case after

:06:37. > :06:39.Portuguese police dropped its investigation. The Metropolitan

:06:39. > :06:48.Police say last month's visit to Barcelona and previous trips to

:06:48. > :06:51.Portugal were to liaise with other forces.

:06:51. > :06:53.17 people have been arrested in Leicestershire during the first

:06:53. > :06:56.weekend of the Christmas anti- drink-drive campaign. The None for

:06:56. > :06:59.the Road campaign started last Thursday. Police say nine people

:06:59. > :07:01.were over the alcohol limit on Saturday alone. Last year 125

:07:01. > :07:07.motorists were arrested for drink driving during the whole of

:07:07. > :07:10.December. It's not just the roads that are

:07:10. > :07:14.being prepared for the cold weather this year, East Midlands Trains

:07:14. > :07:16.says its improving the way it deals with freezing temperatures. The

:07:16. > :07:19.company's planning special snow timetables and has new anti-freeze

:07:19. > :07:24.in vehicles which can withstand temperatures as low as minus 28

:07:24. > :07:30.degrees Celsius. It also plans to offer passenger information on

:07:30. > :07:32.special screens and through dedicated Twitter feeds.

:07:32. > :07:36.Nottingham City Council has apologised after people living in a

:07:36. > :07:38.block of flats had to wait more than two weeks to have their bins

:07:38. > :07:42.emptied. Residents said they felt ignored by

:07:42. > :07:47.the authority. However, the rubbish was finally taken away less than an

:07:47. > :07:50.hour after our lunchtime programme had reported their complaints.

:07:50. > :07:59.The council says major changes to its bin collection schedules were

:07:59. > :08:03.to blame for the delay. This was the scene at 10am today.

:08:03. > :08:06.The council had not collected the bins at this block of flats since

:08:06. > :08:12.the middle of November. Residents taking out their rubbish were

:08:12. > :08:15.greeted by overflowing bins and piles of bags. It is not on. The

:08:15. > :08:20.council just ignores us. They are ignoring a sound that is the only

:08:20. > :08:24.thing I can say. They are totally ignoring our plight. If this is

:08:24. > :08:29.council care, I don't know what is Foster with of a room beginning to

:08:29. > :08:39.phone up, some residents were forced to put rubbish on their

:08:39. > :08:41.

:08:41. > :08:45.patios. -- with the room are beginning to fill up. I found... We

:08:46. > :08:49.are getting desperate. These were the views aired on our lunchtime

:08:49. > :08:55.programme today. Then, at around 2pm, the bins were finally

:08:55. > :09:03.collected. As soon as it is on television, it is clear within 20

:09:03. > :09:10.minutes. Why has the response to the phone calls we've made... Why

:09:10. > :09:14.have they done nothing? It is a side effect to last month's changes

:09:14. > :09:17.to bin collections. It says the new system will save them 700,000 a

:09:17. > :09:21.year but there have been some teething problems. Two weeks on and

:09:21. > :09:29.the rubbish at at least 200 properties is still to be collected.

:09:29. > :09:33.But for the residence here, things are finally back to normal. --

:09:33. > :09:38.residents. A youth project that's facing

:09:38. > :09:40.closure got some unlikely celebrity backing today.

:09:40. > :09:43.The American pop-star, Aloe Blacc, popped into to Nottingham's

:09:43. > :09:53.Community Recording Studio, ahead of a performance in the city

:09:53. > :10:01.

:10:01. > :10:04.This is the track that turned him into a overnight recording star. He

:10:04. > :10:10.was visiting Dane Nottingham youth project that is desperately short

:10:10. > :10:20.of money. It has been taking teenagers off the streets for 21

:10:20. > :10:24.years. There are questions for local school children as well.

:10:24. > :10:30.is not about the money you have put about what you can do with your

:10:30. > :10:33.fame. I hope I can inspire the local community to support this

:10:33. > :10:41.project because without it, places will not be able to stick around.

:10:41. > :10:47.We needed. -- we need it forced up and then he listens to some of the

:10:47. > :10:57.young musicians. -- we need it. And then he came and listened to some

:10:57. > :11:00.of them the UN musicians. It gives awareness to the work that we do.

:11:00. > :11:06.Last year, another big name from the musical world came to visit.

:11:06. > :11:09.Feargal Sharkey was here with the culture minister to unveil a new

:11:09. > :11:17.rehearsal space. Now the studio might have to close because of cuts

:11:17. > :11:20.in its funding. We are reaching the point where we could cease to be.

:11:20. > :11:24.People were completely disillusioned, had no way to go, we

:11:24. > :11:28.were bringing parents. We are trying to make sure that kids are

:11:28. > :11:34.not confused because it was a big issue, the riots. I don't know how

:11:34. > :11:38.easy we could have been of places like this were around. Getting

:11:38. > :11:45.support from such a big star is a shot in the arm but it is money

:11:45. > :11:51.they really need here. It will take very much more than a dollar to get

:11:51. > :11:54.this centre up and running. Now it's hard enough caring for a

:11:54. > :11:57.family member virtually full time but it's even harder if you're

:11:57. > :12:00.trying to do well at school too. But that's the reality facing 14-

:12:00. > :12:02.year-old Sophie Walker from Derby, who, with her dad, looks after her

:12:03. > :12:06.mum who suffers from Huntingdon's disease.

:12:06. > :12:09.In the first of our series on carers, James Roberson went to met

:12:09. > :12:17.Sophie, whose only respite from her duties comes through her dance

:12:17. > :12:22.classes. At classes in Derby, Sophie Walker

:12:22. > :12:32.looks like all the other young dancers learning the latest routine.

:12:32. > :12:33.

:12:33. > :12:37.For Sophie, this is her knee time. -- me time. But she soon get back

:12:37. > :12:44.to her other eating, washing up and making food, so she can help to

:12:44. > :12:47.look after her mother. She has Huntington's disease. It

:12:48. > :12:52.progressively affects the brain and nervous system. Hadn't really mind

:12:52. > :12:57.because I think I am used to it now. I don't find it as hard. -- I don't

:12:57. > :13:01.really mind. Some people think it is a big deal but it is normal life.

:13:01. > :13:06.Sophie has spent most of her child at helping care for her mother. As

:13:06. > :13:10.her condition has worsened, so he has done more and more so Alpo,

:13:10. > :13:16.from making her bed debating have lost up people say you are doing

:13:16. > :13:20.really well. She just doesn't see what all the fuss is about. She

:13:20. > :13:25.doesn't think she is anything special. So he also has to fit in

:13:25. > :13:30.homework and every week her dancing, her bit of respite care. It gives

:13:30. > :13:38.me a really good break and everyone is fully supportive. It gives me

:13:38. > :13:42.someone to talk to land gives me a break. Because my father a break.

:13:42. > :13:45.Her parents are proud of her daughter who has already won a

:13:45. > :13:50.committee Champions Award and is hoping to be part of the Olympic

:13:50. > :13:54.torch relay. The mother nominated me. I felt really good. I like it

:13:54. > :14:03.when I make my mother pride and she is happy. As long as my mother is

:14:03. > :14:06.happy, I'm happy as well. There could be up to 750,000 teenagers

:14:06. > :14:09.like Sophie across the country. Many are reluctant to admit they

:14:09. > :14:11.care for other people, a point made by Nikki Thompson from the

:14:11. > :14:15.Barnardo's charity earlier this afternoon.

:14:15. > :14:19.The overriding fear for young carers and their parents is if they

:14:19. > :14:22.ask for help it will be perceived that they are not coping and they

:14:22. > :14:26.are frightened that their family will be split up if they do ask for

:14:26. > :14:30.some support. That is not what happens but I think that is the

:14:30. > :14:32.overriding fear. That is the biggest challenge that we all face

:14:32. > :14:38.in terms of identifying young people like Sophie and their

:14:38. > :14:42.parents. Sophie is obviously comfortable with her role. She is a

:14:42. > :14:48.great girl. There are other children who would fear being

:14:48. > :14:53.bullied, is that right? Yes. At Barnardo's, day-in, day-out, we

:14:53. > :14:57.would have lots of young carers who are not coping as well as Sophie

:14:57. > :15:02.and to one not as resilient as Sophie evidently is. One of the

:15:02. > :15:12.many negative impacts of being a young carer can be bullying from

:15:12. > :15:13.

:15:13. > :15:19.Piers, which is very distressing. - - peers. No teenager wants to be

:15:19. > :15:23.seen as being different. Sadly, in society, even today, there are

:15:23. > :15:26.tremendous stigmas associated with mental health, physical

:15:26. > :15:31.disabilities and alcohol and substance issues, which many of our

:15:31. > :15:35.young carers parents are experiencing. By association, the

:15:35. > :15:38.young carers are stigmatised as well. I know that Barnardo's

:15:38. > :15:43.supports young carers. There is help out there, isn't there?

:15:43. > :15:47.Certainly, Barnardo works with over 350 young carers in Leicester and

:15:47. > :15:54.Leicestershire every year. There are other young care services

:15:54. > :16:04.throughout the East Midlands. There is a great website younger carers

:16:04. > :16:05.

:16:05. > :16:11..net. You can search in your area. There is a safe chat room as well.

:16:11. > :16:14.Still to come: it's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

:16:15. > :16:24.Yes, snow in some parts last night. And there's another cold one on the

:16:25. > :16:25.

:16:25. > :16:28.way. I am keeping warm and snug, looking at some of the snowy images

:16:28. > :16:38.that have come in today four cross region. I will be giving you the

:16:38. > :16:48.

:16:48. > :16:51.First Nigel Pearson says he'll be looking to tweak his Leicester City

:16:51. > :17:00.squad in the January transfer window. It follows defeat to his

:17:00. > :17:09.old club Hull City at the weekend. Jeremy Nicholas reports.

:17:09. > :17:15.The Hull City Platt -- fans had been... They were not impressed.

:17:15. > :17:19.Another game. That is your people's job to build it up like that. It

:17:20. > :17:25.was a game we are all looking forward to. 10 of the 11 players

:17:25. > :17:29.were signed by Pearson and it was left to his players to open the

:17:29. > :17:34.scoring, nearly. A crucial moment was the sending off of his play a.

:17:34. > :17:38.At first, the second red card seemed harsh but closer inspection

:17:39. > :17:42.showed it wasn't for the initial challenge but for the following

:17:43. > :17:49.trip. Have got no complaints with it. I've seen at a number of times.

:17:49. > :17:52.-- I've got no complaints with it. Friarton made no mistakes from the

:17:52. > :17:57.spot. Leicester were back in the game when David Nugent found

:17:57. > :18:03.himself in space. His shot was straight at the keeper. The shot

:18:03. > :18:08.came back to this other player. His right foot found the bottom corner.

:18:08. > :18:14.The travelling supporters sang, with only got 10 men, and it looked

:18:14. > :18:24.like they were going to win it. But this player scored a goal right at

:18:24. > :18:26.

:18:26. > :18:30.We know we've got very good players. The balance of the squad needs

:18:30. > :18:37.tweaking slightly. We will look at that when the January comes but

:18:37. > :18:40.there is a bit of football to be paid between Valand them. --

:18:41. > :18:43.between now and then. Leicester's squad, tweaked or not,

:18:44. > :18:46.learned yesterday they will go to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup

:18:46. > :18:49.third round. So no pressure for either team there. Actually, its

:18:49. > :18:52.probably an unwelcome distraction for Forest in particular. A third

:18:52. > :18:54.defeat on the bounce on Saturday in another game which Forest should

:18:54. > :18:56.have won. This is why they did not. But his

:18:56. > :19:06.injury time and a moment of weakness and Brighton and pick

:19:06. > :19:08.

:19:08. > :19:14.Forest. -- unpick. It was a crawl way to lose it. We've got to keep

:19:14. > :19:18.our focus and belief. We cannot turn in a performance like that and

:19:18. > :19:28.there be too much wrong with us. can show you exactly what Steve

:19:28. > :19:28.

:19:28. > :19:33.Especially in the second half, passing and movement to savour. In

:19:33. > :19:40.the end there, all for nothing. Like it or not, Nottingham Forest

:19:40. > :19:45.of Ackerman bottom three. -- back in the bottom three.

:19:45. > :19:51.Bit of Forest news today. Former striker Marlon Harewood is back

:19:51. > :19:54.training with the club. He's been playing in China and becomes a free

:19:54. > :19:58.agent next month. Notts County are safely through to the third round

:19:58. > :20:01.of the FA Cup, where a they have the rather dull draw of Doncaster

:20:01. > :20:04.away. But at least they made it past non-league Sutton United.

:20:04. > :20:07.Notts progress was by no means certain until the very end of the

:20:07. > :20:10.game. Jeff Hughes had given them the lead 35 minutes in, but Notts

:20:10. > :20:13.only stayed in front because Stuart Nelson was able to save a Sutton

:20:13. > :20:16.penalty. The Magpies finally finished their non league opponents

:20:16. > :20:19.off in injury time. Hughes again. One final thing from the FA Cup.

:20:19. > :20:22.Derby, who drew against Crystal Palace in the league on Friday,

:20:22. > :20:25.will be at home to guess who? Crystal Palace, in the third round

:20:25. > :20:28.of the Cup. In Rugby, a bit of a relief for me.

:20:28. > :20:30.On Friday I absolutely promised you Leicester Tigers against

:20:30. > :20:33.Northampton would be exciting. So thank goodness it was. Tigers

:20:33. > :20:41.victorious by just five points in a cracking Premiership game at a

:20:41. > :20:50.packed Welford Road. It is fair to say they will not be

:20:50. > :20:53.many Christmas cards sent between these two teams. Northampton's Tom

:20:53. > :20:57.Ward was not pulling his punches. The cavalry arrived and it all
