:00:14. > :00:19.teacher is sacked for altering his pupils' SATs tests. Aleks Grubisic

:00:19. > :00:23.said he only wanted to make the children's answers clearer.

:00:23. > :00:27.Plus the best news for Bethany. A perfect bone marrow match is found

:00:27. > :00:31.in Germany. I am so happy that I am going to

:00:31. > :00:36.have my sister for the rest of my life.

:00:36. > :00:42.Also, why Jesse Jackson has come to Leicester with talk of tackling

:00:42. > :00:52.inequality to combat extremism. And wedding inflation. We look at

:00:52. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:02.Hello, good evening. First tonight, East Midlands Today has learned

:01:02. > :01:10.that a primary school head teacher has been sacked for gross

:01:10. > :01:13.misconduct. He altered his pupils' SATs papers.

:01:13. > :01:17.Speed king exclusively, Aleks Grubisic says he is bitterly

:01:17. > :01:21.disappointed to have lost his headship at Little Bowden Primary

:01:21. > :01:27.School in Market Harborough. We can cross now to Victoria Hicks,

:01:27. > :01:33.who is in our Leicester studio. When did all this happen?

:01:33. > :01:38.It started in the summer when the year six students took their SATs

:01:38. > :01:42.papers. The results came back, and eight formal complaint was lost --

:01:42. > :01:47.was lodged from within the school. That is when a national body

:01:47. > :01:51.intervened. This was the head teacher, Aleks Grubisic. He is 50,

:01:51. > :01:57.he has been in teaching for 25 years, and for the last two years

:01:57. > :02:01.he was head of 2-1. When that national body intervened, is re-

:02:01. > :02:08.examined all the papers of the children. -- Little Bowden Primary

:02:08. > :02:12.School. It then took the unusual step of cancelling the test results.

:02:12. > :02:16.That meant the children went on to their new school without results.

:02:16. > :02:21.Mr Grubisic was sacked for gross misconduct and four fours VI school

:02:21. > :02:26.record. You spoke to him at his home in Leicester this afternoon.

:02:26. > :02:31.What does he say he did? He did not want to talk on camera,

:02:31. > :02:38.but he did admit to making some changes to his plea pupils' papers.

:02:38. > :02:43.He says he did not falsify them, or improve his school's standing in

:02:43. > :02:46.the tables. He said he did not want his pupils to be marked down for

:02:46. > :02:51.unclear or messy work. So that meant if the answers were written

:02:51. > :02:54.in the wrong place, on some papers he moved to the answer or wrote an

:02:54. > :02:58.arrow to make it clear where the right answer was. He admits he made

:02:58. > :03:01.a mistake doing that, but he said at the time he faced a personal

:03:01. > :03:06.problems and panicked when he saw the papers.

:03:06. > :03:11.What have the governors had to say? We approached the governing body,

:03:11. > :03:15.we have had no response. We also wanted an end to be from the local

:03:15. > :03:21.education authority, but the council Cantor instead issued a

:03:21. > :03:27.statement confirming we already knew. -- County Council. This is

:03:27. > :03:32.what some parents had to save. It is not very good. Not the best

:03:32. > :03:35.thing to happen. Not very good for the school or the children. I do

:03:35. > :03:40.not think it has been handled very fairly. No background has been

:03:40. > :03:44.given about the reasons for this, and I do think that there are a lot

:03:44. > :03:48.of whispers going on, and I do not think that is fair.

:03:48. > :03:52.I do not believe all the full report has come out. I think we

:03:52. > :03:58.should have been told more Falstaff if it was human error all his fault,

:03:58. > :04:03.he has done so much for the school it will be a shame bad he has left

:04:03. > :04:08.for the reasons he has. This afternoon, Mr Grubisic told me

:04:08. > :04:13.he apologised to pupils and parents. As for his future, he has been

:04:13. > :04:20.warned he could be struck off. So after 25 years' experience, he may

:04:20. > :04:24.never teach again. Still to come, lean times on the

:04:24. > :04:34.High Street. Consumers are reining in their Christmas spending, at

:04:34. > :04:37.

:04:37. > :04:43.that could mean Turkey with fewer The perfect match, but will it be

:04:43. > :04:47.enough to save young Bethany? The 14-year-old desperately needs a

:04:47. > :04:52.bone marrow transplant. Her family have just been told that a donor

:04:52. > :04:56.has been found in Germany. They say they are thrilled and can

:04:56. > :05:01.finally contemplate celebrating Christmas.

:05:01. > :05:05.They have not felt much like doing this up until now, but today it is

:05:05. > :05:09.as if all their Christmases have come at once.

:05:09. > :05:14.It was amazing to hear them, because I had not thought I would

:05:14. > :05:19.get a full match. I am very happy and excited and am very grateful.

:05:19. > :05:23.I am so happy I will have my sister for the rest of my life. Really

:05:23. > :05:27.pleased. Bethany's had leukaemia since she

:05:27. > :05:32.was three. She had been in remission, but it came back a few

:05:32. > :05:38.weeks ago. More chemotherapy is no longer an option.

:05:38. > :05:42.It was a huge shock, because I was feeling so well. I try to stay

:05:42. > :05:49.positive with my family. None of us thought for a minute

:05:49. > :05:54.that it would return. It was horrible. It was absolutely

:05:54. > :05:58.heartbreaking, I can't describe how horrible it was to hear that. So

:05:58. > :06:06.the fact that there could be a really good match out there for

:06:06. > :06:14.Bethany is over during a, and so happy.

:06:14. > :06:18.Geller has networked passionately for her sister. -- Gemma. They had

:06:18. > :06:24.the biggest ever donor session in Leicester last month. 4000 people

:06:24. > :06:29.contributed. You have been through so much. How

:06:29. > :06:35.do feel about this news? Yesterday when they told us there

:06:35. > :06:39.was a potential donor for Bethany, it was almost like a little miracle.

:06:39. > :06:48.And it means Bethany's Merry Christmas could be followed by a

:06:48. > :06:51.very happy new year. Fingers crossed for her.

:06:51. > :06:54.A police force that has seen a sharp drop in burglary figures has

:06:55. > :06:58.been ordered to check if they are accurate. Government inspectors are

:06:58. > :07:03.worried that some house break-ins in Nottinghamshire might not have

:07:03. > :07:13.been reported. This comes as they begin a pre-

:07:13. > :07:14.

:07:14. > :07:22.Christmas crackdown on burglaries. Police! Open the door! Another

:07:22. > :07:26.burglary suspect at a -- an early- morning raid this morning. The

:07:26. > :07:31.owner of his hair salon told me how his home was ransacked yesterday

:07:31. > :07:36.morning. They smashed a window then stole jewellery, a computer and a

:07:36. > :07:42.new TV. It is just measurable. It makes you feel totally unprotected

:07:42. > :07:46.and insecure. I did not sleep very well last night. My wife did not

:07:46. > :07:51.either. We were listening for all sorts of noises. We wondered what

:07:51. > :07:54.we have to do to protect our possessions.

:07:54. > :07:57.Tackling burglary has been a priority for the police in

:07:57. > :08:01.Nottinghamshire, as the official figures have been going down for

:08:01. > :08:05.several years. But today, this report has raised questions about

:08:05. > :08:10.how reliable the figures are. Inspectors found concerns that

:08:10. > :08:14.house burglary may have been under recorded by Nottinghamshire Police.

:08:14. > :08:17.They said some crimes were not order consistently, as they have

:08:17. > :08:23.read -- they have ordered a six- month audit.

:08:23. > :08:26.We are concerned if the force has not been recorded incorrectly. It

:08:26. > :08:32.is important for the public that they have confidence that the

:08:32. > :08:36.police force is going to record their crimes directly. Today,

:08:36. > :08:39.Nottinghamshire Police made a robust defence of the force's crime

:08:40. > :08:46.figures. Reporting and recording standards

:08:46. > :08:50.in this force are totally accurate, 94% of all crimes reported to us

:08:50. > :08:54.are correctly classified. The ones that are not, that is sometimes

:08:54. > :08:58.because the public when they first report the crime, they do not give

:08:58. > :09:01.us enough information to base our assumptions on.

:09:01. > :09:08.But the police are worried that Nottinghamshire is starting to see

:09:08. > :09:14.more burglaries reported, as they want us all to help tackle that.

:09:14. > :09:18.Jeremy has joined us in the studio. Why is all of this so important?

:09:18. > :09:22.Crime statistics are so important when it comes to judging the police.

:09:22. > :09:26.Last week we heard a retired police inspector go public about his

:09:26. > :09:29.worries. What this draft report does is really raised questions

:09:29. > :09:37.about their credibility in black- and-white. Nottinghamshire Police

:09:37. > :09:39.do not agree? No, they're quite angry. But they say they have

:09:39. > :09:43.checked to those we classified burglaries that the inspection team

:09:43. > :09:48.was worried about, they say aid has established a there was not a

:09:48. > :09:51.problem. In fact, one police chief told me he is convinced that

:09:51. > :09:56.Nottinghamshire's crime figures are probably more accurate than a lot

:09:56. > :09:59.of others. More than 40 jobs in Nottingham are

:09:59. > :10:06.at risk because of government proposals to close 39 regional

:10:06. > :10:10.offices of the DVLA. 46 posts will go at the Bilborough office in

:10:10. > :10:17.Nottingham. Ministers want to centralise the DVLA's work at its

:10:17. > :10:21.headquarters in Swansea by the end of 2013. Today's saw the start of a

:10:21. > :10:24.three-month long consultation. Police are searching for a gang up

:10:24. > :10:28.and -- armed robbers who threatened a building society staff in

:10:28. > :10:33.Elkstone. Money was being delivered to the company of this when a group

:10:33. > :10:38.of men smashed into the front door? -- with sledgehammers. They escaped

:10:39. > :10:42.with four cash boxes, but dropped one on the street.

:10:42. > :10:46.This vehicle was stolen nearly a fortnight ago, so it is been

:10:46. > :10:51.outstanding for quite a while. It is critical to establish exactly

:10:51. > :10:55.where that has been in that intervening period. We know it is a

:10:55. > :11:00.dark coloured BMW, and I would appeal for any witnesses to come

:11:00. > :11:05.forward if they have seen it. He once advised Martin Luther King

:11:05. > :11:08.and President Clinton and Obama. Today the American civil rights

:11:08. > :11:11.leader Reverend Jesse Jackson was in Leicester.

:11:11. > :11:21.He was talking about his experience of bringing different communities

:11:21. > :11:22.

:11:22. > :11:27.together to combat extremism. A standing ovation for a civil

:11:27. > :11:33.rights leader who at 70, remains an energetic champion for social

:11:33. > :11:36.justice, and who is not afraid to speak his mind. The Reverend Jesse

:11:36. > :11:44.Jackson Wouter this conference at De Montfort University of the

:11:44. > :11:47.dangers of growing its trainers and. -- warned this conference.

:11:47. > :11:52.Hope is diminishing. We must go another way.

:11:52. > :11:54.He was addressing the first conference of its type organised by

:11:54. > :12:01.a parliamentary committee investigating the Brits of a

:12:01. > :12:05.violent radicalism. He has worked so hard. They have

:12:05. > :12:09.been growing concern over far right extremism, and following the London

:12:09. > :12:14.bombings in 2005, there is now closer surveillance of some Muslim

:12:14. > :12:23.communities and universities. Jesse Jackson told be the dangers

:12:23. > :12:26.of stereotyping people were there, whatever their religion.

:12:27. > :12:33.The house of prayer becomes a House of Commerce. That is what Jesus

:12:33. > :12:39.said. It was radical law, but not radical hate. Then we are

:12:39. > :12:46.challenged to teach people that the science never races take valid

:12:46. > :12:50.reaction to respond with violence. This is a real attempt with -- by

:12:50. > :12:55.MPs took why then are the voices of those genuinely alarmed by growing

:12:55. > :12:58.extremism both at home and abroad. There is a wide range of extremism

:12:58. > :13:02.that needs to be addressed, and not one based on Islam or one

:13:02. > :13:07.particular faith. The only way to do that is to work in conjunction

:13:07. > :13:10.with the communities and government. Jesse Jackson received an honorary

:13:10. > :13:19.degree from demand that University for his lifelong were to civil

:13:19. > :13:22.rights. He still believes there is much injustice to put right.

:13:22. > :13:26.We all know that prices are going up for pretty much everything, not

:13:26. > :13:29.least food. In fact, the traditional Christmas dinner

:13:29. > :13:33.provides a prime example of the rising cost of filling the shopping

:13:33. > :13:36.basket. Research carried out by the

:13:36. > :13:43.University of Nottingham suggest this year it could be a case of

:13:43. > :13:49.Turkey with only a very few of the trimmings. Mike O'Sullivan is at

:13:49. > :13:53.the Victoria Centre in Nottingham. The shops here are up until 8pm,

:13:53. > :13:56.some of them, as the Christmas rush builds up. If you are thinking of

:13:56. > :14:01.spending, I have been looking at some figures which should indicate

:14:01. > :14:04.to you how your pay is keeping up with inflation, and another

:14:04. > :14:11.estimate on inflation that will show how it is pushing up the cost

:14:11. > :14:18.of your Christmas dinner this year. Turkey with all the trimmings. How

:14:18. > :14:23.much more work cost due this year? Economists have worked it out. The

:14:23. > :14:30.experts say a festive dinner for six people will cost an average 74

:14:30. > :14:36.this year. That is 3.70 more than last year. That is based on an

:14:36. > :14:42.average shopping trip going up by 5% it in a year.

:14:42. > :14:46.Everything has gone up. The turkey is twice as much as a few years ago.

:14:46. > :14:51.I will probably have less people over for dinner. Less presents,

:14:51. > :14:55.less varied. Christmas is a special occasion,

:14:55. > :15:00.and I do not think that will affect what we do on Christmas Day. But

:15:00. > :15:05.generally, I do agree that food prices are expensive.

:15:05. > :15:11.Food inflation is at an almost 20 year high. General inflation now

:15:11. > :15:14.stands at almost 4.8%. So our wages keeping pace with inflation?

:15:14. > :15:22.Figures show that in many places they are not. In the East Midlands,

:15:22. > :15:26.average pay is just over 24,300. In Leicester, it has gone up a

:15:26. > :15:27.little bit more. Nottingham has little bit more. Nottingham has

:15:27. > :15:33.seen an increase, but it could be because there are fewer part-time

:15:33. > :15:43.jobs and fewer low-paid jobs around two Adin. Derby has seen a drop in

:15:43. > :15:47.

:15:47. > :15:52.pay levels. These new mothers have Just trying to find the best offers,

:15:52. > :15:58.looking through leaflets and things like that. By them when you find a

:15:58. > :16:02.good offer. I only spend what I can afford and it does not last long

:16:03. > :16:07.for me. I am sure these words might come back to haunt me, because this

:16:07. > :16:10.is all about forecasting, but all the indicators suggest that

:16:10. > :16:15.inflation has peaked and we will probably see it all over the next

:16:15. > :16:20.commands. The Government's inflation target is to%. We could

:16:20. > :16:24.be heading that way, but because a bleak -- possibly because of weak

:16:24. > :16:30.demand and the economy. There are other factors they could

:16:30. > :16:35.bring down inflation. The Chancellor cancer and 3p per litre

:16:35. > :16:40.increase in fuel duty will be a welcome relief for many families

:16:40. > :16:43.will start -- the Chancellor cancelling. We hope that spending

:16:43. > :16:49.will pick up in the run-up to Christmas.

:16:49. > :16:52.Fingers crossed. In avenues, Derbyshire County Council has

:16:52. > :16:58.signed a deal to create 700 apprenticeships over the next four

:16:58. > :17:01.years. The scheme costing around 500,000 will be targeted at 16 and

:17:01. > :17:07.17-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training.

:17:07. > :17:10.The council is also offering training grants of 2,500 to small

:17:10. > :17:14.and medium-sized companies to take on apprentices.

:17:14. > :17:17.There has been a lot of talk of wind and wintriness this week.

:17:17. > :17:22.Here's Sara with a quick look ahead to the forecast.

:17:22. > :17:25.It is remaining very cold and windy throughout most of this week and

:17:25. > :17:35.some of the Shah as we are likely to see could also produce a little

:17:35. > :17:39.

:17:39. > :17:45.bit of snow. -- some of the showers. It does look pretty. Even when it

:17:45. > :17:49.is fake! Nothing fake about our Natalie, with the sport.

:17:49. > :17:53.Football, and Nottingham Forest chairman Fred Clarke has told us

:17:53. > :17:57.tonight they have been no bids to buy the Cup since it was put up for

:17:57. > :18:02.sale. In a powerful and honest interview he admitted he had found

:18:02. > :18:05.it difficult in the last few months and says he cannot bring any

:18:05. > :18:10.players in this January unless some go out.

:18:10. > :18:16.He is a former European Cup-winning hero, so when not in Forest came

:18:16. > :18:21.calling, Frank Clark knew he would help out. -- Nottingham Forest. But

:18:21. > :18:24.the last two months has been harder than he thought. They got in an

:18:24. > :18:29.ambitious manager who wants to build Rome in a day. That is one of

:18:29. > :18:35.the reasons we brought him here. We want someone ambitious. He is

:18:35. > :18:39.frustrated and we are frustrated that because of the financial

:18:39. > :18:45.realities, we cannot do as much as we would like for him at the moment.

:18:45. > :18:51.So that is something I am having to deal with. But this time last year,

:18:51. > :18:58.Nottingham Forest were on the verge of six spot. They are now in the

:18:58. > :19:01.bottom three. What has gone wrong in such a short space of time?

:19:01. > :19:08.don't know what was done before we came here. I could tell you that

:19:08. > :19:11.any club that has the managers in six months has problems. Eventually.

:19:11. > :19:16.And the problem for Frank has now is he has to sell players before he

:19:16. > :19:22.can bring any more in. We have to trade and not necessarily selling

:19:22. > :19:26.and buying, we might be someone in on-loan, so we need to move

:19:26. > :19:30.somebody out. What about the sale of the club, has there been any

:19:31. > :19:34.interest for many buyers? The last time we heard from them, there was

:19:34. > :19:40.no approaches whatsoever. So are you looking at alternative sources

:19:40. > :19:46.of income? We are looking to strengthen the board, who might be

:19:46. > :19:50.able to find investors. Frank wants to be frank, and honest and open

:19:50. > :19:55.that the fans. Everybody at the club is doing their utmost to turn

:19:55. > :20:01.it round and improve, but we need them to stay with us. Without them,

:20:01. > :20:06.there will not be football here. Boxing, and this Saturday, Carl

:20:06. > :20:09.Froch is aiming to become a dual world champion and the winner of

:20:09. > :20:17.the Super Six tournament. But he is fighting the unbeaten American,

:20:17. > :20:22.Andre Ward. Mark Shardlow is with the Froch cab in New York and all

:20:22. > :20:27.this week he will be reporting on the build up to the bout. -- the

:20:27. > :20:30.Froch camp. Carl Froch has been training here

:20:30. > :20:35.in South Manhattan, 50 yards or so away from the site of the former

:20:35. > :20:39.twin towers. Over the next few days, we will have the inside track on

:20:39. > :20:42.his preparation for Saturday night's fight. We are with him as

:20:42. > :20:47.he completes his fight camp in New York. He does not get any bigger

:20:47. > :20:53.than this, this is the pinnacle. find out why a former heavyweight

:20:53. > :20:58.world champion comes to visit. There is pressure on him. He has

:20:58. > :21:01.superior power and strength. We go to the gym in Nottingham where Carl

:21:01. > :21:05.started as a nine-year-old and went on to win schoolboy titles.

:21:05. > :21:11.even then, you could not turn around and say he was good to be a

:21:11. > :21:21.world champion. It and his mother opens the Froch scrapper. A just to

:21:21. > :21:22.

:21:22. > :21:29.cough, almost son. -- scrub out. -- he just took off. Is that Carl

:21:29. > :21:33.Froch, the legend? That his life, with the Carl Froch camp, over the

:21:33. > :21:39.next three days here in the States on East Midlands Today.
