:00:12. > :00:17.accuses medical staff over the death of his wife.

:00:17. > :00:22.Alison Taylor died from a blood clot days after giving birth.

:00:22. > :00:27.to Taylor hopes no one ever has to endure the trauma and pain that his

:00:27. > :00:31.wife suffered. The Christmas tipple that can kill

:00:31. > :00:36.but just how much fake booze is out there?

:00:36. > :00:40.Plus howl in Bakewell they are preparing for Christmas both here

:00:40. > :00:50.in the church and down in the town. And I will keep you up-to-date on

:00:50. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:03.Good evening. Welcome to the programme. A grieving widow Work

:01:03. > :01:08.says he is convinced his wife would still be alive if more had been

:01:08. > :01:13.done to spot the blood clot that killed her. Alison Taylor from

:01:13. > :01:17.Leicestershire was only 29 years old and died just 16 days after

:01:17. > :01:27.giving birth to her third child. Speaking at the end of a two-day

:01:27. > :01:28.

:01:28. > :01:34.inquest, her husband Darren said he would be taking legal action.

:01:34. > :01:40.Evie will never know her mother. 16 days after she was born, Alison was

:01:40. > :01:45.in the bath when she shouted for help. She was blue, lips were blue

:01:45. > :01:50.around the edges. I asked the ambulanceman and he said, it is not

:01:50. > :01:54.looking good and he gave her this clot-busting drug that could work

:01:54. > :01:59.but he could not give guarantees. Attempts to resuscitate Alison were

:01:59. > :02:03.in vain. 11 days earlier and midwife had sent Alison to the

:02:03. > :02:10.hospital suspecting she had a deep vein thrombosis but the doctor was

:02:11. > :02:14.not convinced. He admitted misunderstanding guidelines and an

:02:15. > :02:19.ultrasound scan was not available. The pathologist who carried out the

:02:19. > :02:23.post-mortem told the hearing that there probably was a deep vein

:02:24. > :02:27.thrombosis in Mrs Taylor's right leg and that if they scan had been

:02:27. > :02:32.done, on or around the time she went to Leicester will Infirmary,

:02:32. > :02:37.then she might still be alive. Darren Taylor told the inquest how

:02:37. > :02:43.his wife still worried had gone to her GP twice, but at each time, how

:02:43. > :02:48.puzzling symptoms were diagnosed as muscle pain. The coroner no narrow

:02:48. > :02:51.-- decided on a narrative verdict, a blood clot had killed her

:02:52. > :02:57.originating from DVT. investigation has been carried out

:02:57. > :03:04.by the trust and hospital trust and recommendations have been made but

:03:04. > :03:07.Mr Taylor and his family it is too little too late. Darren's solicitor

:03:07. > :03:13.says the family is planning legal action. Left to bring up his

:03:13. > :03:19.children on loan, there is a huge hole in all their lives.

:03:19. > :03:23.Next tonight, Derby has been given a huge jobs boost after one of the

:03:23. > :03:28.UK's largest call-centre companies announced plans to create 700 new

:03:28. > :03:33.positions in the city over the next six months. Hero TSC is to move

:03:33. > :03:36.into the former Egg building on Pride Park turning it into a

:03:36. > :03:40.customer service centre for Sky. The company currently employs more

:03:40. > :03:45.than 400 staff in eight cities around the UK. It will start

:03:45. > :03:49.recruiting in Derby immediate lead. Part of the high street may be

:03:49. > :03:55.suffering but one sector seems to be doing well. That is the discount

:03:55. > :03:59.stores selling things for around 1. Bosses at two of the biggest chains

:03:59. > :04:07.say it is due to the changing attitudes of consumers. They say

:04:07. > :04:10.the embarrassment factor has gone. The pound staff shops are a growing

:04:10. > :04:15.sector of the High Street. Many consumers are looking for value.

:04:15. > :04:19.Customers at this pound while shop in Leicester say attitudes have

:04:19. > :04:25.changed to shopping in discount stores. Everybody you speak to say,

:04:25. > :04:31.you can get that from the pound shop. The stigma has gone. There

:04:31. > :04:34.should be no stigma because it is a shop just like any other. The chain

:04:34. > :04:40.has plans to open another five stores in the East Midlands next

:04:40. > :04:45.year, creating up to 100 jobs. One worker who started here a few years

:04:45. > :04:48.ago says she never expected the job to last. Enormously surprised

:04:48. > :04:52.because although my manager was assuring me that it was the job

:04:52. > :04:59.that would last, there were still the doubt in my mind and I thought,

:04:59. > :05:03.have I done the right or wrong thing? I did the right thing.

:05:03. > :05:08.Arrival of this canter, a branch of the 99p Stores in Derby. They

:05:08. > :05:12.recently opened a new shop in Long Eaton. It is claimed many consumers

:05:12. > :05:17.are feeling more comfortable with the concept. There are stories of

:05:17. > :05:23.people hiding their carrier bags to hide where it came from, but

:05:23. > :05:27.nowadays people are not embarrassed. Going back four or five years there

:05:27. > :05:32.was that stigma but it is not there any more. People brag about what

:05:32. > :05:36.they got in the pound shop. shops are saying there are now part

:05:36. > :05:43.of the mainstream shopping experience and they are moving to

:05:43. > :05:47.retail parks as well, so you can now drive up and spend your pound.

:05:47. > :05:52.Some high-street stores are fighting back in these times but

:05:52. > :05:55.what happens if your local high street is in a small town and not a

:05:55. > :06:04.big city? How do shopkeepers attract business in places like

:06:05. > :06:12.Bakewell? Let's ask James Roberson who happens to be there.

:06:12. > :06:15.We are here in Bakewell and shoppers and Traders need all the

:06:15. > :06:22.help they can get to fight back against the attractions of

:06:22. > :06:28.supermarkets and big cities. On Monday, I was here in Bakewell to

:06:28. > :06:33.see how traders are coping with the fight back to get the shoppers back

:06:33. > :06:37.in here. On a sunny winter's day, Bakewell

:06:37. > :06:41.looks bus the thing but this is market day and the weather is kind.

:06:41. > :06:46.In reality, Bakewell has been struggling to keep shoppers coming

:06:46. > :06:51.here but one of the older shops in town decided to fight back. It

:06:51. > :06:55.expanded its business by investing in a big extension. It is a massive

:06:55. > :07:00.investment and something we thought hard about, especially with the

:07:00. > :07:05.economic climate. It has to be positive thinking for 2012 and it

:07:05. > :07:09.has been a success. Senior citizens getting benefits from free public

:07:09. > :07:15.transport, Bakewell's shops are looking at other ways of drawing

:07:15. > :07:20.customers in. When you're out in a local community, you have to

:07:20. > :07:24.support the local community. We have a local discount card.

:07:24. > :07:30.marketing ideas help he around, they call traders knew something

:07:30. > :07:34.extra was needed. Recently the town held a special Christmas weekend.

:07:34. > :07:40.The local chamber of trade has been concerned about the decline of

:07:40. > :07:44.turnover of businesses and we needed to do something to aid --

:07:44. > :07:51.boost the local economy and make a call a focus 0.4 people to do

:07:51. > :07:55.shopping. I have lived here for 12 years and I love the town and I did

:07:55. > :08:00.not want to see it go downhill. result was a success. Hundreds of

:08:00. > :08:06.people were involved and dozens of shops. We had the best Saturday we

:08:06. > :08:11.ever had in 13 years. What a difference it makes for us. All the

:08:11. > :08:17.shops did something individually and it brought all the tourists in

:08:17. > :08:20.and it was fantastic. A lovely weekend. In the town, they are

:08:20. > :08:25.already planning another bigger, better shopping weekend for next

:08:25. > :08:30.Christmas. I will be back at the church here

:08:30. > :08:37.later in the programme and to see that an exhibition of angels that

:08:37. > :08:42.has brought hundreds of visitors into the church here as well.

:08:42. > :08:47.Still to come: counting the holds in the road - last winter's big

:08:47. > :08:57.freeze may be a distant memory but councils are still digging deep to

:08:57. > :08:58.

:08:58. > :09:03.pay for the damage. East Midlands Today has discovered

:09:03. > :09:07.that thousands of bottles of illegal alcohol have been seized

:09:07. > :09:10.right across the region this year. Trading standards officers are so

:09:10. > :09:16.concerned about the potentially fatal booze that for the first time,

:09:16. > :09:20.they have issued a warning to shoppers.

:09:20. > :09:25.In the summer, an explosion killed five men at a small unit in

:09:25. > :09:28.Lincolnshire. Fake vodka was being produced in the centre of Boston.

:09:28. > :09:33.Trading standards believe it could illicit alcohol firmly on the map.

:09:33. > :09:38.It is now such a problem, for the first time, regional figures have

:09:38. > :09:41.been compiled. Around 2,500 counterfeit bottles have been

:09:41. > :09:44.recovered by trading standards following spot checks and

:09:44. > :09:49.intelligence. Most of its branded as Fokker but containing

:09:49. > :09:54.potentially fatal industrial alcohol used in cleaning products.

:09:54. > :09:59.The number seized in Derby accounts for 60 % of the total. In April,

:09:59. > :10:04.600 fake bottles were found at a house belonging to the owner of an

:10:04. > :10:10.off-licence. In August, at 900 bottles were found in a delivery

:10:10. > :10:15.van. Drop is a made-up name. The bottles contained a separate are

:10:15. > :10:20.not used in anti-freeze. Elicit what care can be lethal. The this

:10:20. > :10:25.is the tip of the iceberg. We know one lady in another part of the

:10:25. > :10:29.country died and students are seeking this type of Barca out.

:10:30. > :10:36.That is a very bad thing because what is in this is very harmful for

:10:36. > :10:41.you. The forgers are getting better. Take this fake bottle. It is almost

:10:41. > :10:46.impossible to tell the difference, even when compared with the genuine

:10:46. > :10:50.article. Yesterday, 10 fake bottles were found in Nottingham. In

:10:50. > :10:54.Mansfield, inspections have also been carried out. For the first

:10:54. > :10:59.time, trading standards who are one in customers to be vigilant about

:10:59. > :11:08.book like Christmas booze. They should be looking for poor quality

:11:08. > :11:11.labelling. If the levels vary in the bottle, they should not. If it

:11:11. > :11:16.taste strange contact trading standards, we can get it analysed

:11:16. > :11:20.to make sure it is genuine. If you are in any doubt about the

:11:20. > :11:27.Christmas tipple you are buying, the advice is if the price is too

:11:27. > :11:32.good to be true, it probably is. Overboard is being offered to catch

:11:32. > :11:35.a gang who attacked and terrorised a couple in their home. David and

:11:35. > :11:40.Sandra Clarke were tied up and beaten by three men at their

:11:40. > :11:46.farmhouse near Countesthorpe in September. An appeal will be shown

:11:46. > :11:51.on TV tonight. A Crimewatch reconstruction shows

:11:51. > :11:55.how masked men burst into the clocks home in September. I was

:11:55. > :12:03.watching at the one with the machete which was frightening. I

:12:03. > :12:07.was hit in the face with a crowbar. They said, you are lying to us.

:12:07. > :12:13.Where is the money? They would not believe us. The couple were left

:12:13. > :12:18.badly bruised by their attackers who stole cars, cash and fire arms

:12:18. > :12:23.worth a total of 100,000. horrifies me to think some of the

:12:23. > :12:27.guns they took could be threatening some poor shopkeeper. Police

:12:27. > :12:33.believe the gang may have carried out another attack in Leicester. It

:12:33. > :12:41.is hoped tonight appeal will help jog memories. A reward to help

:12:41. > :12:45.catch those responsible is also on offer.

:12:45. > :12:48.It has been confirmed that Nottingham will get two new

:12:48. > :12:53.tramlines after the government signed off the proposals this

:12:53. > :12:56.afternoon. Trams will now run as far as Clifton and and chilwell

:12:56. > :13:01.with the first phase of construction due to begin next

:13:01. > :13:05.month. Nottingham City Council will fund around a third of the 570

:13:05. > :13:10.million extension, which is says it will do for next year's workplace

:13:10. > :13:14.parking levy. Some of Derby's primary schools are

:13:14. > :13:19.amongst the poorest performing in the country. The Department of

:13:19. > :13:24.Education has released results of 16,000 schools across the country.

:13:24. > :13:28.In Derby almost a quarter of the schools fell below the expected

:13:28. > :13:33.standards for key stage two. The government says it is vital they

:13:33. > :13:37.improve. We have hundreds of thousands of

:13:37. > :13:43.young people leaving primary school every year as fluent readers, good

:13:43. > :13:47.in arithmetic with an knowledge of science and general knowledge. Why

:13:47. > :13:51.are there schools that are still underperforming and it is an

:13:51. > :13:55.objective of the government that we have all schools that are the best.

:13:55. > :14:05.We have looked at those schools and we are concentrating on those 20 to

:14:05. > :14:08.

:14:08. > :14:15.bring them out and help them get a A union has accused councils are

:14:15. > :14:25.failing to support their workers. They had said that the council does

:14:25. > :14:30.

:14:30. > :14:37.not use as much work from come in macro as they used to. -- Remploy.

:14:37. > :14:41.People do not realise the problems until they work in these factories.

:14:41. > :14:45.They would be doing absolutely nothing if it wasn't my hair.

:14:45. > :14:50.You are watching East Midlands Today. Do you remember scenes like

:14:50. > :15:00.this from last year? They could be more on the way. We will have the

:15:00. > :15:01.

:15:01. > :15:06.weather soon. The legacy of snow is pot holes. The council has received

:15:06. > :15:11.a 77 complaints about holes in the road.

:15:11. > :15:16.It is difficult to drive around at the East Midlands and not seek a

:15:16. > :15:23.pothole. The cold weather last year caused considerable damage to our

:15:23. > :15:28.road network. The number of pothole claims from motorists over the past

:15:28. > :15:35.four years has shot up 500%. Leicester City Council are having

:15:35. > :15:42.to U-turn, and invest money in the roads. We are putting 1 million

:15:42. > :15:49.into the maintenance budget, to respond to these problems, and get

:15:49. > :15:54.more of them repaired. Although relaying the road it looks easy, in

:15:54. > :16:03.Nottingham they are studying how repairs like this can be improved.

:16:03. > :16:08.The signs of understanding potholes is not that advance. -- the science.

:16:08. > :16:13.The numbers are missing. Working out how quickly they deteriorate,

:16:13. > :16:16.that sort of thing, that is a step we are yet to take.

:16:17. > :16:26.universities have also been granted funding to test a difference

:16:27. > :16:30.

:16:30. > :16:38.services, and how they react to traffic roads -- loads.

:16:38. > :16:43.traffic roads -- loads. I hope will not get more potholes.

:16:43. > :16:47.Here is the sport. Leicester City striker David Nugent

:16:47. > :16:55.has told us he disappointed with the season so far. They are 9th in

:16:55. > :17:03.the championship table. Despite their start, he feels they still

:17:03. > :17:08.can get automatic promotion. Smiling and relaxed, but David

:17:08. > :17:16.Nugent is not happy. A I am the leading goalscorer, but I should be

:17:16. > :17:23.doing better. I hope to get ten goals by Christmas. He has scored

:17:23. > :17:30.six goals, he says he, and the team have to do better. I think we

:17:30. > :17:37.should be hierarch in the table. Results could be better. -- higher

:17:37. > :17:41.up in the table. We need to get the results right. He has played for

:17:41. > :17:51.England, made over 500 appearances for three different clubs, many

:17:51. > :17:53.

:17:53. > :18:03.people regard him as a veteran. People remember me at 16. He says

:18:03. > :18:04.

:18:04. > :18:10.the best is yet to come. I'm in my prime, 26, hopefully we can

:18:10. > :18:14.challenge for the top two. We need to get to the Premier League.

:18:14. > :18:19.believes Nigel Pearson is the man to guide them there. The lads are a

:18:19. > :18:29.bit scared of him! If he says something, you have to listen to

:18:29. > :18:32.

:18:32. > :18:39.him. Feeding you can go up? -- do you think you can go up? There are

:18:39. > :18:49.whole point up for grabs, -- there are 12 points up for grabs, we need

:18:49. > :18:53.to get the maximum. What a day boy Lee Westwood, he

:18:54. > :19:01.leads the Thai Open up by five shots on day one. He fired a round

:19:01. > :19:11.of 12 under-par, his best ever. Boxing, they are calling it the

:19:11. > :19:12.

:19:12. > :19:18.fight to the air, Nottingham's Carl Froch against Andre Ward. It has

:19:18. > :19:24.taken a Froch years to gain the respect he has now.

:19:24. > :19:29.We are just two days away from this fight. Two days in the latest

:19:29. > :19:36.chapter of the remarkable story of a man who used to watch boxing

:19:36. > :19:46.films of his mother. It is a small step away from Carl Froch's buried

:19:46. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:53.tell end to his career. -- fairy- tale ending to his story. I walked

:19:53. > :19:58.into a boxing gym when I was nine years old. 25 years ago this is

:19:58. > :20:02.where he first box. The club is still going strong. He believed in

:20:02. > :20:08.himself. He fought nobody could beat him. He would get his homework

:20:08. > :20:18.done. He was straight there. He won all of his schoolboy fight. He was

:20:18. > :20:25.

:20:25. > :20:31.inspired by the Rocky films. I had my first amateur fight when I was

:20:31. > :20:40.11 years old. He always kept winning. After a four-year break,

:20:40. > :20:44.he became an amateur champion. He turned pro ten years ago. He won

:20:44. > :20:53.the world title. You always believe that your child is special. I did

:20:53. > :21:00.not believe that my son were grave to be a world champion. -- my son

:21:00. > :21:09.would become a world champion. securing my legacy. I won my name

:21:09. > :21:16.to live on. At the end of a day, we are very proud of him. Carl Froch,

:21:16. > :21:24.a fighter from Nottingham, he did himself, and his city proud.

:21:24. > :21:30.We will find out if the fairy tale comes true. The fight in Atlantic

:21:30. > :21:40.City, I will be reporting from their tomorrow night.

:21:40. > :21:43.

:21:43. > :21:45.Proof that mothers know best! Are always! -- always!

:21:45. > :21:55.Earlier Ronni found out that shopkeepers from Bakewell are

:21:55. > :21:57.

:21:57. > :22:02.preparing a -- preparing for Christmas. Now we hear from the

:22:02. > :22:08.Christmas. Now we hear from the church.

:22:08. > :22:16.This is a beautiful church. The decorations have been done by

:22:16. > :22:20.children and professionals. I'm joined now by Canon Tony Kaunhoven,

:22:20. > :22:30.where have all these angels come from? We have 16 professional

:22:30. > :22:37.artists. We have around 70 made by the community. They are wonderful

:22:38. > :22:43.displays, based on people's interpretation of angels. They are

:22:43. > :22:47.not just here, there in the town as well? We invited local businesses,

:22:47. > :22:52.organisations, and individuals to make them, put them in their

:22:53. > :22:59.windows, their gardens, where the people wanted to put them. -- where

:23:00. > :23:07.the people wanted to put them. We had people come here, they have

:23:07. > :23:13.been inspired. It is part of their Christmas celebrations. They are

:23:13. > :23:22.supporting our church, and an orphanage. That is wonderful. Thank

:23:22. > :23:32.you very much. And now to play as out, the choir is going to play us

:23:32. > :23:32.

:23:32. > :25:12.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 100 seconds

:25:12. > :25:22.# Little Baby Jesus was at that Wasn't that a lovely? What we need

:25:22. > :25:30.

:25:30. > :25:35.now to feel like Christmas, his son now to feel like Christmas, his son

:25:35. > :25:45.snow. -- is a summer snow. Thank you for this picture of a

:25:45. > :25:46.

:25:46. > :25:51.robin. Skied sending them in -- keeps sending them in. This is the

:25:51. > :25:55.cloud which is sitting across the south-west of the country, on our

:25:55. > :26:03.satellite. What we are starting to see is that the low pressure is
