:00:04. > :00:08.This is East Midlands Today with Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies.

:00:08. > :00:16.Our top story tonight - the sudden death of the man who saved

:00:16. > :00:21.Nottingham Forest. Nigel Doughty was one of her most successful

:00:21. > :00:29.businessman. Tributes tonight from charities, politicians and award of

:00:29. > :00:34.sport. Claims of heavy-handed policing at the EDL demonstration

:00:34. > :00:43.in Leicester. The says the first time I have seen these techniques

:00:43. > :00:46.used in the City. -- this is the first time. Last, carving out a

:00:46. > :00:51.future - the number of apprenticeships has dropped. And we

:00:52. > :01:01.told you it has come, and it has arrived. We take a look at some of

:01:02. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:14.your wintry photographs. Good evening. Welcome to the programme.

:01:14. > :01:17.He was one of the East Midlands' richest men. The owner of

:01:17. > :01:20.Nottingham Forest. Nigel Doughty was found dead in a gym at his home

:01:20. > :01:23.on Saturday afternoon. He was just 54. A father of four children.

:01:23. > :01:28.Today politicians, charities and sports people have all been paying

:01:28. > :01:33.tribute. Our sports editor Mark Shardlow is at the City Ground.

:01:33. > :01:38.is news that has stunned many people. It has left the club shell-

:01:38. > :01:43.shock. Father of four children, two of them, very young. He was known

:01:43. > :01:48.for his investments in and love of Nottingham Forest. He was a hugely

:01:48. > :01:54.successful businessman, behind a number of well-known brands. He was

:01:54. > :02:02.a supporter of many local charities. I at Nottingham Forest, they are

:02:02. > :02:06.mourning the loss of a man regarded as the saviour of the club. Nigel

:02:06. > :02:10.Doughty Made a difference to more than just football. He was an

:02:10. > :02:16.influential businessman, a philanthropist, a passionate

:02:16. > :02:20.charity supporter. Not only was the chairman of Nottingham Forest but

:02:20. > :02:27.he was an ambassador for Nottingham and the county. He will be sadly

:02:27. > :02:32.missed by his family. People do not appreciate what he did on things

:02:32. > :02:36.like children's issues. He was a serious, sensible, intelligent man,

:02:36. > :02:41.just happen to be keen on the game and Nottingham Forest. He will be

:02:41. > :02:51.missed by everybody who followed Nottingham Forest football club.

:02:51. > :03:09.

:03:09. > :03:15.Are the Sunday Times Rich was for last year estimated his fortune at

:03:15. > :03:20.130 million. He plunged much of that, more than 75 million, into

:03:20. > :03:28.Nottingham Forest. But millions also went to charity. An intensely

:03:28. > :03:33.private person, this was an unusual public interview in 2010 when his

:03:33. > :03:41.charity donated 1 million towards a two new sensors for Newark

:03:41. > :03:48.Hospital, named in honour of his mother was a nurse there. He had

:03:48. > :03:52.also recently been honoured by the Childline charity. The Nottingham-

:03:52. > :03:59.based for it was renamed the Doughty Centre, in recognition of

:03:59. > :04:01.his contribution. You never look for recognition to all the support

:04:02. > :04:07.he gave was and it is wonderful to have the opportunity to say thank

:04:07. > :04:12.you for that. A views have come from political leaders. Over the

:04:12. > :04:16.last seven years, Nigel Doughty gave 3.5 million to the Labour

:04:16. > :04:22.Party. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair described them as a wonderful

:04:22. > :04:32.man, generous, committed and decent. At Nottingham Forest, there is

:04:32. > :04:37.

:04:37. > :04:42.sadness at losing a man like that. So, Mark, a man who quietly

:04:42. > :04:46.contributed to many walks of life. But he was a huge backer of

:04:46. > :04:52.Nottingham Forest. What happens to the football club without him?

:04:52. > :04:59.stepped aside from being chairman in the autumn when the club parted

:04:59. > :05:02.company with Steve McLaren. Nigel Doughty was stung by a vocal

:05:02. > :05:07.minority who criticised him in public and he never came back to

:05:07. > :05:14.watch Nottingham Forest since that day. Previously he had invested 75

:05:14. > :05:18.million in loans to the club, and even though he intended to sell, he

:05:18. > :05:22.invested 23 million in loans to keep the club going until the year

:05:22. > :05:32.2014. We will be touching more and that in the sports bulletin later

:05:32. > :05:37.on. Next tonight - was it a smooth, trouble-free operation or a

:05:37. > :05:39.draconian use of power? On Saturday, 2,000 police officers were in

:05:39. > :05:42.Leicester to separate rival demonstrations by the English

:05:42. > :05:44.Defence League and an anti-fascist organisation. Three people were

:05:44. > :05:53.arrested, but none for causing trouble during the marches. Helen

:05:54. > :05:59.Astle reports. Even by police standards it was a colossal

:05:59. > :06:02.operation. There were 2,000 officers from 17 forces on duty in

:06:02. > :06:11.Leicester as members of the English Defence League march through the

:06:11. > :06:16.city. At the same time, Western United Against fascism was always -

:06:16. > :06:23.- also protesting. The police Mark Dowd two separate routes and

:06:23. > :06:26.demonstrators were told they had to stick to them. Some anti--EDL

:06:26. > :06:32.campaigners gathered at a separate route at the clock tower and were

:06:32. > :06:35.moved on by the police. I am appalled that these authoritarian

:06:35. > :06:40.measures being used against ordinary people. It is the first

:06:40. > :06:45.time I have seen these techniques used in the City. Some people

:06:45. > :06:50.deliberately ignored the conditions posed by the Chief Constable. I

:06:50. > :06:54.regret the fact that he has not had the courtesy to speak to me himself

:06:54. > :06:59.was up clearly, he has an issue around policing tactics. But that

:06:59. > :07:04.is not in tune anybody else who is speaking. I suspect this is about a

:07:04. > :07:07.personal agenda rather than wider public opinion. The purpose of the

:07:07. > :07:12.police operation was to ensure that we did not have disorder and fights

:07:12. > :07:17.on the streets of Leicester. They were successful in than that and

:07:18. > :07:22.they were right to be firm but fair with all those who took part. The

:07:22. > :07:25.police have a job to do and I think they did it very well. The whilst

:07:25. > :07:31.there is debate about all these tactics, what has not been

:07:31. > :07:40.discussed is the cost of the operation, between 750,000-1

:07:40. > :07:45.million. And tonight's Inside Out will feature exclusive behind-the-

:07:45. > :07:51.scenes footage of the police and protesters. BBC 1 at 7:30pm. Still

:07:51. > :07:55.to come on the programme. Network Rail agrees a compensation pay-out

:07:55. > :07:58.over the deaths of two people at a level crossing. And the East

:07:58. > :08:08.Midlands remembers the day that the Ken died 60 years ago and prepares

:08:08. > :08:09.

:08:09. > :08:13.to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen. A judge has described

:08:13. > :08:16.the death of a Nottingham teenager as an absolute tragedy. Kyle Dooley

:08:16. > :08:19.died after the stolen car he was travelling in crashed into bales of

:08:19. > :08:22.straw last May. Today his best friend, who was driving the car,

:08:22. > :08:32.was jailed for four and half years. From Nottingham Crown Court, Carol

:08:32. > :08:37.

:08:37. > :08:42.Hinds reports. Jake Fretwell A riot at Nottingham Crown Court this

:08:42. > :08:47.morning, Harman admitted causing death by dangerous driving, theft

:08:47. > :08:54.and driving while disqualified. The 19 old lost control of a stolen car

:08:54. > :08:57.as he sped along forest lane. When the police arrived they found that

:08:58. > :09:03.the car had left the road and crashed into some straw bales. The

:09:03. > :09:12.underside of the car was on fire. Both the driver and passenger were

:09:12. > :09:18.unconscious, inside. His best friend, Kyle Dooley, died at the

:09:18. > :09:24.scene, and it will was so seriously injured it was two months before he

:09:24. > :09:31.was able to be interviewed by police. He was disqualified from

:09:31. > :09:35.driving for five years and imprisoned for four years. Thieves

:09:35. > :09:38.have used a tractor to rip a cash machine from the wall of a bank in

:09:38. > :09:41.Nottinghamshire. The raid was captured on CCTV. You can see it at

:09:41. > :09:46.the top left of this footage as it rammed the NatWest branch in

:09:46. > :09:49.Bingham just before three o'clock this morning. The Market Place was

:09:49. > :09:55.sealed off for several hours while engineers assessed the safety of

:09:55. > :09:58.the building. Police are appealing for any information about the raid.

:09:58. > :10:01.There's a warning of possible problems with plans to build a

:10:01. > :10:04.velodrome next to Pride Park in Derby. Safety experts say people

:10:05. > :10:07.may be put at risk by a gas storage facility opposite the site's

:10:07. > :10:12.entrance. There could also be flooding and water pollution

:10:12. > :10:15.problems. The council says it's working through the difficulties.

:10:15. > :10:18.Two weeks before a scheduled High Court hearing, Network Rail has

:10:18. > :10:24.agreed to pay damages to a man whose wife and grandson were killed

:10:25. > :10:30.in a railway crossing accident. Jean Hoggart and Michael Dawson

:10:30. > :10:33.died when they were hit by a train in Bestwood. Today, in a separate

:10:33. > :10:35.development, the directors of Network rail agreed to waive their

:10:35. > :10:42.much-criticised bonuses. Instead, the money will be spent on safety

:10:42. > :10:46.improvements. Quentin Rayner reports. Locals had described the

:10:46. > :10:53.pedestrian only crossing as an accident waiting to happen. It was

:10:53. > :10:57.poorly lit, and not straight. In December 2008, Jean Hogg Group and

:10:57. > :11:03.her 17-year-old autistic San San -- grandson was racket by a train.

:11:03. > :11:07.Family said dangers had been identified before the accident but

:11:07. > :11:12.nothing was done. In 2,000, Railtrack responded to a planning

:11:12. > :11:16.application by a developer and recognised the need to put in up

:11:16. > :11:20.that way or a subway, but did not do either of these things. In 2004,

:11:20. > :11:25.Network Rail recognised the dangers of the crossing and that it needed

:11:25. > :11:35.to make it straight, but they did not do this also in a statement,

:11:35. > :11:56.

:11:56. > :12:00.Network Rail said that it had accepted legal responsibility for

:12:00. > :12:06.the accident and that all necessary operations on the crossing had been

:12:06. > :12:09.completed. It's National Apprenticeship Week - and there's

:12:09. > :12:12.been a call for more employers in our region to give a young person a

:12:12. > :12:16.chance in the world of work. Especially in Nottingham. There -

:12:16. > :12:22.against the trend in the rest of our region - the number of young

:12:22. > :12:24.apprentice places has actually gone down. Mike O'Sullivan reports. Amy

:12:24. > :12:28.is nearing the end of an apprenticeship, training in Long

:12:28. > :12:33.Eaton, as a kitchen fitter. I am lucky to have the apprenticeship.

:12:33. > :12:38.It has given me the confidence to go to a company and say, I can do

:12:38. > :12:42.this. That is what an apprenticeship can do for a young

:12:42. > :12:47.person, but there was concern that in Nottingham, the number of places

:12:47. > :12:52.would and apprentices has gone down 5% at a time when, in the rest of

:12:52. > :12:56.the region, it has increased. the norm is the key focus of

:12:56. > :12:59.attention. We want to spend more time with employers and the more

:12:59. > :13:04.campaigns in Nottingham. You want to work with partners in the city

:13:04. > :13:08.council. The company training Amy says that some companies have been

:13:08. > :13:11.forced to think twice about taking on an apprentice. Many small

:13:11. > :13:21.companies are reluctant to put out apprenticeships at the moment

:13:21. > :13:21.

:13:22. > :13:26.because of the recession, so that is part of the issue. But one

:13:26. > :13:30.racecourse in Nottinghamshire has taken on two apprentices. I like

:13:30. > :13:36.walking outside all day, doing something that I enjoy, not being

:13:36. > :13:42.sat and a classroom with a textbook. The government pays for or training

:13:42. > :13:47.for 16-18-year-olds. 51 million in the East Midlands alone last year.

:13:47. > :13:53.The calibre of young people that came in were top class. That is why

:13:53. > :13:58.we have taken two of them on. employers are being asked to tickle

:13:58. > :14:08.the apprenticeship offer, and tried to grow their business. -- to take

:14:08. > :14:08.

:14:08. > :14:11.on they are printer should offer Vostok -- the apprenticeship offer.

:14:11. > :14:14.A major campaign has started in Nottingham to alert more people to

:14:14. > :14:17.the signs of bladder or kidney cancer. One of the tell-tale

:14:17. > :14:20.symptoms is blood in urine. Not the most pleasant thing to talk about,

:14:20. > :14:22.but by spreading the message the NHS is hoping to save lives. Our

:14:22. > :14:26.Health Correspondent Rob Sissons reports. Melanie had an aggressive

:14:26. > :14:31.form of bladder cancer three years ago. She noticed blood in her urine.

:14:31. > :14:39.She did the right thing and approached a GP. Some people can be

:14:39. > :14:43.put off going to their GP and pink they can handle it themselves. I

:14:43. > :14:49.have been greatly helped by the way that people acted quickly and dealt

:14:49. > :14:59.with the treatment and help me recover. A expert's in Nottingham

:14:59. > :15:01.

:15:01. > :15:07.believe that patients, often men, Delhi getting help. They might have

:15:07. > :15:11.called it the Blood in Pee campaign. The end up presenting as an

:15:11. > :15:17.emergency and then, the outcomes are not so good, if you present

:15:17. > :15:21.late. This consultants showed me a scan of a patient who got help

:15:21. > :15:24.early after finding blood in their urine, which meant that the tumour

:15:24. > :15:29.in their kidney could be successfully removed. If you bring

:15:29. > :15:33.it to people's attention, the earlier it is looked at, and you

:15:33. > :15:37.can get treatments starter, if it is something serious, but a lot of

:15:37. > :15:42.that thing we did not find a serious cause for it, and sometimes

:15:42. > :15:47.it is very treatable. The message at this Nottingham supermarket wars,

:15:47. > :15:54.if you find blood, it is probably an infection, but please get it

:15:54. > :16:02.checked out. Lifestyle risk factors are smoking, physical activity...

:16:02. > :16:12.They will be taking the campaign to Nottingham Forest, Notts County and

:16:12. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:24.Nottingham Panthers matches. It was 60 years ago today that the King -

:16:24. > :16:27.George the sixth - died, and Queen Elizabeth acceeded to the throne.

:16:27. > :16:30.This year is of course her Diamond Jubilee and - like the Royal

:16:30. > :16:33.Wedding in 2011 - special events are being planned across the East

:16:33. > :16:36.Midlands. Kylie Pentelow has been finding out how a local community,

:16:36. > :16:38.a council and a company are all preparing to celebrate. Today,

:16:38. > :16:40.Londoners have turn out in their thousands to greet their young

:16:40. > :16:44.Sovereign. In 1952, the Queen began her ring, after her father passed

:16:44. > :16:49.away. That was 60 years ago. Now it is time to celebrate her Diamond

:16:49. > :16:55.Jubilee, in true English style. Some of those at this tea dance in

:16:55. > :16:59.Nottinghamshire remember the day that the king died, when his father

:16:59. > :17:04.was on the royal train. I remember these stories about the royal train.

:17:04. > :17:08.He was actually on the royal train as it left Paddington and went to

:17:08. > :17:14.Windsor where the funeral took place. He has wonderful stories of

:17:14. > :17:19.him standing at the back of the train holding a cattle on a Primus

:17:19. > :17:24.stove, and he had to borrow some water in case any other royalty on

:17:24. > :17:28.board needed a cup of tea. This is as close as I will get to the Queen,

:17:28. > :17:33.tea with her representative in Leicestershire. She has an

:17:33. > :17:37.incredible knowledge and seems to love to meet people. This is the

:17:37. > :17:43.wonderful thing. I think we should be so grateful for what she has

:17:43. > :17:48.done and how she has rained and serve this country so well for 60

:17:48. > :17:53.years. Lady Gretton is planning a busy calendar of Jubilee Events

:17:53. > :17:57.were at the county. And a busy year ahead for Royal Crown Derby. They

:17:57. > :18:02.have already sold out of some of their Jubilee pieces. But, the

:18:02. > :18:05.usual favourites are still available. They are all made in

:18:05. > :18:08.England and there are very few of us left were doing that so it is

:18:08. > :18:12.vital for the economy that we continue to make these things in

:18:12. > :18:16.England. Until the boil wedding and now the Jubilee it was quite some

:18:16. > :18:23.time since we had a good royal occasions so to have two very close

:18:23. > :18:27.together, it is good for business. We wanted to do something fairly

:18:27. > :18:34.regal and something that the Queen, if she ever got to see them, would

:18:34. > :18:44.really like. Maybe this is more the Queen's cup of tea than that Corgi

:18:44. > :18:46.

:18:46. > :18:49.paper we! -- paperweight. Still to come on the programme - when the

:18:49. > :18:53.snow lay all about. It's been a rare enough event this winter so,

:18:53. > :18:56.when a big fall of snow arrived, many of you grabbed your cameras

:18:56. > :19:00.and captured the moment. We'll have a selection of your snowy snaps

:19:00. > :19:03.later. Here at the City Ground they've opened a book of

:19:03. > :19:13.condolences for the clubs owner Nigel Doughty, who died suddenly on

:19:13. > :19:23.

:19:23. > :19:28.Saturday. Thank you for seminars, in 2001, reads one. You did not go

:19:28. > :19:36.unappreciated, said another. A minute's applause will be held in

:19:36. > :19:42.tribute at the next home game. He made sure that he had an internet

:19:42. > :19:46.radio commentary of the Nottingham Forest game, where everyone. He had

:19:46. > :19:49.been a fan of Nottingham Forest since the age of six. A season-

:19:49. > :19:52.ticket holder for 40 years and where he was in the world internet

:19:52. > :19:56.links were set up so he could hear commentary on the matches. But it

:19:56. > :19:58.was his financial support over the last decade which stood out. It is

:19:58. > :20:01.a sombre City Ground, with much for staff and supporters to reflect on.

:20:01. > :20:04.He had stepped down as chairman. His seat in the stand has been

:20:04. > :20:10.indeed, ever since. He felt he could not return to watch the club

:20:10. > :20:14.below. He was a financial backer like few others. 100 million in

:20:14. > :20:17.loans he did not expect to be repaid. He did not seek the

:20:17. > :20:22.limelight, gave few interviews and quietly went about doing what he

:20:22. > :20:32.thought was best for the club. loved anything to do with the

:20:32. > :20:36.

:20:36. > :20:40.football club. He was the chairman of the football club, you would

:20:40. > :20:45.hardly believe it. We had great togetherness. Since I have been

:20:45. > :20:55.here, I have never heard anybody say anything bad about Nigel

:20:55. > :20:56.

:20:56. > :21:00.Dougherty, from the players to the staff. -- Doughty. He will go down

:21:00. > :21:09.in history. The football club will always be indebted to the

:21:09. > :21:15.commitment he has shown. The team did not have the success that he

:21:15. > :21:19.would have liked. The sale of Wes Morgan to Leicester secures the

:21:19. > :21:24.short term financial future but the longer term is more uncertain. It

:21:24. > :21:28.is difficult to assess all that so soon. Much may depend on what

:21:28. > :21:38.provision Nigel Dougherty may have made for the club in the event of

:21:38. > :21:44.

:21:44. > :21:47.his death. There will be a special tribute later. On Late Kick Off

:21:47. > :21:50.here on BBC1 when current player Lee Camp and former captain John

:21:50. > :21:53.McGovern are the guests. Earlier I spoke to John McGovern. He was very

:21:53. > :21:56.open, very polite and he would discuss anything you throw at him.

:21:56. > :22:00.I would have a word with him at half-time about how the game was

:22:00. > :22:03.going and he was always willing to listen. It was nice to exchange a

:22:03. > :22:10.frank opinion with him before I went back to cover the second half

:22:10. > :22:14.of the match. He was a nice person, a pleasant person, not conceited, a

:22:14. > :22:24.genuine man, and that was a terrible shock and a great tragedy

:22:24. > :22:25.

:22:25. > :22:28.for his family that he has died so young. And Late Kick Off is here on
