:00:07. > :00:12.This is East Midlands Today. Our top story: the convicted drugs

:00:12. > :00:17.baron who plotted to flood Britain with cocaine.

:00:17. > :00:21.Russell Knaggs ordered a major Colombian drug shipment from inside

:00:21. > :00:26.his prison cell. If they had been successful, none of them would have

:00:26. > :00:31.had to work ever again. Also tonight, ran over a week before

:00:31. > :00:36.Christmas. Now Simon's widow urges the driver to come forward.

:00:37. > :00:41.Plus, a woman bullied as a child for being a ginger suffers new

:00:41. > :00:48.abuse on the internet. I was gobsmacked. It was message after

:00:48. > :00:55.message after message. I was scared. And getting plastered, how young

:00:55. > :01:05.volunteers are helping to make a military memorial more lifelike.

:01:05. > :01:10.

:01:10. > :01:15.Good evening. Welcome to Wednesday's programme. First, a

:01:15. > :01:19.convicted drugs baron has been found guilty of organising a multi-

:01:19. > :01:22.million-pound smuggling plot while he was locked up in a

:01:22. > :01:26.Nottinghamshire jail. Russell Knaggs tried to flood Britain's

:01:26. > :01:31.streets with cocaine. The trial heard he had met a

:01:31. > :01:41.Colombian drug trafficker inside Lowdham Grange Prison. He then sent

:01:41. > :01:42.

:01:42. > :01:46.a accomplice to buy cocaine from a violence South American cartels.

:01:46. > :01:51.Russell Knaggs was once described as Britain's cocaine Mr Big.

:01:51. > :01:55.Getting caught did not deter him. He used his sentence here at

:01:55. > :01:59.Lowdham Grange Prison as a business opportunity to make contacts and do

:01:59. > :02:03.deals with powerful Colombian drug cartels. He arranged to buy cocaine

:02:03. > :02:07.directly from South America and ship it through Costa Rica

:02:07. > :02:11.disguised as consignments of fruit. From the States, it would have been

:02:12. > :02:15.moved as legitimate freight, in huge containers on a major shipping

:02:15. > :02:20.route to Germany. Once in Europe and through the most stringent

:02:20. > :02:25.checks, they would have been driven here in smaller loads. It is a bit

:02:25. > :02:29.like a film script. We are talking millions of pounds of cocaine that

:02:29. > :02:34.they would have brought into the UK. The profits would have been

:02:34. > :02:38.enormous, absolutely enormous. If they had been successful, none of

:02:38. > :02:44.them would have had to work ever again. The streets of the UK would

:02:44. > :02:48.have been flooded with cocaine. Behind it all, sat in prison is

:02:48. > :02:52.will Russell Knaggs pulling all the strings. Knaggs knew his

:02:52. > :02:56.conversations might be monitored so he described the deals as

:02:56. > :03:02.plastering jobs, his coat for smuggling cocaine. The plot was

:03:02. > :03:06.foiled after his cell was searched and they found plans with a list of

:03:06. > :03:11.Colombian contacts and a hidden Sim card for a mobile phone. It

:03:11. > :03:18.identified his accomplices and started a huge surveillance

:03:18. > :03:23.operations. These are under cover pictures of their main targets.

:03:23. > :03:27.This photo was taken in Holland and this is him back at Lowdham Grange

:03:27. > :03:32.Prison. They were trapped on flights too. This is surveillance

:03:32. > :03:36.footage from Belgium. One of them even Trav -- travelled to Latin

:03:36. > :03:40.America. This photo was taken in Colombia where he was overseeing

:03:40. > :03:48.drug shipments for Russell Knaggs. I am hoping that other people in

:03:48. > :03:51.prison will get a clear message... The high level criminals are so

:03:51. > :03:56.arrogant that they think they can run a business from the prison

:03:56. > :04:03.service. It is not going to happen. Knaggs is facing a much longer

:04:03. > :04:06.prison sentence. The other men are now joining him. Another man has

:04:06. > :04:11.admitted his involvement. They thought they would make millions

:04:11. > :04:16.but all they have learnt his time behind bars.

:04:16. > :04:22.Next tonight, a widow is urging the driver of a the killed her husband

:04:22. > :04:28.to come forward and give themselves up. 44-year-old Simon Ware was

:04:28. > :04:34.killed the week before Christmas. A 5,000 reward is now being offered.

:04:34. > :04:42.Simon's widow has been talking to our reporter. I got the telephone

:04:42. > :04:47.call at about 620, it was Leicester Royal Infirmary, they said that

:04:47. > :04:50.Simon was involved in an accident and they told me to get there as

:04:50. > :04:56.soon as possible. I went to my neighbour next door and he gave me

:04:56. > :05:01.a lift to the hospital. I knew he was dead when I got there. This is

:05:01. > :05:06.where Simon was killed on the outskirts of the towns. He was hit

:05:06. > :05:12.by a vehicle which did not stop. Seconds later, a van that drove

:05:12. > :05:17.over him. That driver did stop but it was too late. Simon's widow is

:05:17. > :05:21.urging the driver of the vehicle to go to the police. Anybody who knows

:05:21. > :05:26.anything, I just hope and pray that they have got it in them to come

:05:26. > :05:31.forward. It is a possibility that the driver was not aware that they

:05:31. > :05:35.were involved in a collision or possibly they are aware and they

:05:35. > :05:38.were not fully aware of the full servants -- full circumstances and

:05:39. > :05:44.the severity. I would urge that driver or anyone who knows if they

:05:44. > :05:52.are to make contact with us. I have lost my soulmate. He would do

:05:52. > :05:58.anything for anybody. She is now offering a 5,000 reward for the

:05:58. > :06:04.conviction of the driver. She says and Hill went she cannot move on. -

:06:04. > :06:08.- until then, she cannot move on. Natalie Harvey was bullied as a

:06:08. > :06:12.child and again as an adult and all because of higher rate of frizzy

:06:12. > :06:16.hair. Natalie from Beeston says she spent

:06:16. > :06:18.thousands of pounds trying to tame her hair and she thought she had

:06:18. > :06:22.left that childhood abuse behind her.

:06:22. > :06:29.The 35-year-old had not reckoned on a renewed onslaught via the

:06:29. > :06:35.internet. The style that launched the taunts.

:06:35. > :06:40.She was just a little girl but her frizzy red hair made her a target.

:06:40. > :06:45.I used to be spat at on the school bus. He used to be constant. There

:06:45. > :06:51.was not a day that went by when I would not have several comments

:06:51. > :06:55.about my hair. It was awful. spent a small fortune over the

:06:55. > :06:59.years trying to tame it, even wearing a wig. When she posted a

:06:59. > :07:05.photo of herself as a child on the internet recently, she got more

:07:05. > :07:11.cruel comments, a taste of 21st century bullying. I was gobsmacked.

:07:11. > :07:20.It was message, after message, after message. I was scared. I was

:07:20. > :07:25.upset. I felt like the little gold that I once was. -- the little girl.

:07:25. > :07:32.It has been suggested that as many as 40% of all children and 30% of

:07:32. > :07:34.adults have been cyber bullied. Sometimes it is extreme. This

:07:34. > :07:40.university student suffered a sustained online harassment. Her

:07:40. > :07:43.former boyfriend packed sexually explicit photographs of her on

:07:43. > :07:48.social networking sites. Last October, he was given a four-month

:07:48. > :07:52.sentence. It has had a massive impact on everything I do in my

:07:53. > :07:57.day-to-day life. The main issue has been trust. I have not been able to

:07:57. > :08:00.trust people. Cyber bullying can be a lot more destructive than other

:08:00. > :08:05.bullying, particularly because it occurs in environments were lots of

:08:05. > :08:11.other people can see it. People can feel totally humiliated and get

:08:11. > :08:16.depressed and anxious. They can go back and read it and people do. It

:08:16. > :08:20.can be psychologically devastating. Natalie admits that she found it

:08:20. > :08:27.devastating, even at 35. She reported it to the police who told

:08:27. > :08:30.us they take all incidents like this any seriously. -- very

:08:30. > :08:34.seriously. Leicestershire County Council has

:08:34. > :08:39.confirmed that a thousand jobs are to go as it cuts millions of pounds

:08:39. > :08:44.from its budget. The authority is freezing council tax but has agreed

:08:44. > :08:49.to make savings of 74 million over the next four years. It comes after

:08:49. > :08:54.it recently got rid of 500 posts. More job cuts are expected to be

:08:54. > :08:59.confirmed this evening. Leicester City Council needs to save 40

:08:59. > :09:03.million. It is planning to raise council tax by 3.5%.

:09:03. > :09:07.Two men who conned elderly and disabled people out of their life

:09:07. > :09:11.savings have been ordered to pay back the money or face jail. Father

:09:11. > :09:15.and son Shane and Laurence Johnson from Kegworth were jailed in July

:09:15. > :09:21.last year for selling mobility aids that were never delivered. They

:09:21. > :09:24.must now pay back 40,000 or face another prison sentence.

:09:24. > :09:29.New powers are being considered which could mean council tenants in

:09:29. > :09:33.Derby being forced to move house. The city council is looking to

:09:33. > :09:37.introduce fixed term tenancies. They say it would tackle problem

:09:37. > :09:47.neighbours. Tenant groups say they are worried it would lead to people

:09:47. > :09:51.taking less care of their homes. Still to come, the drug that gave

:09:51. > :10:01.Hugh the chance of life. Now he is fighting to make it available to

:10:01. > :10:04.

:10:04. > :10:07.A father who are convinced judges to free him so he could look after

:10:07. > :10:10.his children is tonight back behind bars.

:10:10. > :10:14.Wayne Bishop from Clifton in Nottingham assaulted a man just

:10:14. > :10:20.three weeks after being released. The judge told him he could not

:10:20. > :10:24.play the children card to avoid going to prison.

:10:24. > :10:28.Last May, it was all smiles for Wayne Bishop on his return home to

:10:28. > :10:32.his children aged between 7 and 13. Despite being convicted of burglary

:10:32. > :10:36.and dangerous driving, 34-year-old Wayne Bishop convinced the appeal

:10:36. > :10:39.court that as a single parent, his eight-month prison sentence

:10:39. > :10:43.prevented him from caring for his children and infringed on their

:10:43. > :10:47.right for a family life. Three weeks later, when Bishop and his

:10:47. > :10:50.brother assaulted a man in a shop and today he was sentenced for that

:10:50. > :10:54.and breaching his licence. He was sentenced to eight months of which

:10:54. > :10:58.he will serve half and the judge told them, children cannot be

:10:58. > :11:03.produced like the ace of trumps to avoid prison. He went on, you have

:11:03. > :11:06.to learn that other people have rights too, the right not to be

:11:06. > :11:09.burgled and a be right not to be subject to a violent attack. The

:11:09. > :11:18.judge was told that his five children will be looked after by

:11:18. > :11:24.his sister who already has six of her own. I truly feel that for his

:11:24. > :11:30.children and people not having the facts... What effect will this have

:11:30. > :11:35.on the family? The effect it has is that they cannot live a normal life.

:11:35. > :11:41.That is it. This was his 17th court appearance which in the past have

:11:41. > :11:44.included charges of violence and Police say a Leicestershire man

:11:45. > :11:50.whose body was found beside of a motorway eight years after he went

:11:50. > :11:52.missing, could have been killed in a hit and run. The remains of 29-

:11:52. > :11:57.year-old Vinny Derrick, from Castle Donington, were found below a

:11:57. > :12:01.flyover near Stockport, earlier this month. He'd disappeared while

:12:01. > :12:11.on a night out in Manchester in 2003. Officers say his death isn't

:12:11. > :12:13.

:12:13. > :12:18.being treated as suspicious. Seven men have pleaded not guilty

:12:18. > :12:24.on charges relating to the death of a Polish man. 21-year-old Serioza

:12:24. > :12:30.Lawskoski was found dead last April, he died later in hospital. Five men,

:12:30. > :12:39.all from Derby, appeared in court charged with his murder. They also

:12:39. > :12:41.appeared in conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

:12:41. > :12:44.A woman who threatened residents and caused numerous disturbances in

:12:44. > :12:47.one area of Nottingham has been given a three year anti-social

:12:47. > :12:51.behaviour order. Amanda Rollinson, has been banned from going into the

:12:51. > :12:54.Aboretum area of the city. It follows a number of the calls to

:12:54. > :12:56.the police after the 36-year-old was seen shouting in the street and

:12:56. > :13:00.smashing bottles to gain entry into people's homes.

:13:00. > :13:03.Still to come on the programme tonight - kicking out homophobia.

:13:03. > :13:13.Why are there no openly gay professional footballers? And

:13:13. > :13:14.

:13:14. > :13:17.should the FA do more? A man who says his life has been

:13:17. > :13:24.transformed by taking a new drug to treat prostate cancer is now

:13:24. > :13:26.fighting to secure its future funding by the NHS. Hugh Gunn from

:13:26. > :13:30.Leicestershire says the drug Abiraterone has given him a new

:13:30. > :13:40.chance of life. Now he wants that opportunity to be given to ALL

:13:40. > :13:41.

:13:41. > :13:45.prostate cancer sufferers. Just ten weeks ago Hugh Gunn was so

:13:45. > :13:53.poorly he says he couldn't even put the rubbish out. After a failed

:13:53. > :14:00.course of chemotherapy, his life had changed completely. I had pains

:14:00. > :14:07.in my pelvis, and down my legs, and my third was numb -- my third to

:14:07. > :14:10.warn us numb. It was difficult to climb the stairs, after five

:14:10. > :14:18.minutes I was in pain. Blood tests told doctors his condition was

:14:18. > :14:25.worsening. He was approved great test of the drug Abiraterone. His

:14:25. > :14:29.blood test now shows the can say is no longer active. I started to take

:14:29. > :14:34.Abiraterone on December 13th, and within two days I felt better. My

:14:34. > :14:38.pain has just about gone completely, I cannot go for as long as you

:14:38. > :14:43.would like, I can climb the stairs, I could do anything that a normal

:14:43. > :14:50.man can do. It is just like being given your life back. It is quite

:14:50. > :14:56.incredible. Abiraterone only has NHS funding for another two years.

:14:56. > :15:04.After that, draft guidance by Baba Amr says the drug does not provide

:15:04. > :15:12.enough benefits to justify the cost. The fact that they have an made an

:15:12. > :15:18.interim report, and it is an interim one, that is refusing

:15:18. > :15:21.Abiraterone, is condemning many people to death. It will not that

:15:21. > :15:27.everyone, that it will work for some of them. They should be given

:15:27. > :15:33.that chance. It is so sad that those men are being written there.

:15:33. > :15:39.They have battled to stay alive, it seems so terrible that they can be

:15:39. > :15:42.told are to go away and die. That's how they feel, that they're not

:15:42. > :15:50.worth anything. We have to fight hard to make sure that doesn't

:15:50. > :15:55.happen. The treatment cost 3,000 a month, but the NHS pays a lot less.

:15:55. > :15:58.This couple say it is a small price to pay for a chance at life.

:15:58. > :16:01.Well the organisation that decides which medicine's are available on

:16:01. > :16:06.the NHS are asking for your feedback on its decision not to

:16:06. > :16:11.approve that drug for prostate cancer. You can give your views on

:16:11. > :16:21.it by visiting NICE's website. Better do it tonight though because

:16:21. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:25.the consultation closes tomorrow. Coming up the debate about gay

:16:25. > :16:29.footballers and news to disappoint marathon runners. But we start

:16:29. > :16:32.tonight at Notts County. And what a few days it's been. Their new

:16:32. > :16:35.manager only met the players yesterday. Tonight Keith Curle's in

:16:36. > :16:45.the dug out as Notts play Stevenage in League One. Kirsty Edwards is at

:16:46. > :16:46.

:16:46. > :16:52.Meadow Lane, where it's all change again!

:16:52. > :16:59.It really is. This that doubt will see another new manager tonight.

:16:59. > :17:03.There have a fair share ideas. Keith Curle arrived earlier today,

:17:03. > :17:13.just down the tunnel. I managed to catch up with them to find out how

:17:13. > :17:14.

:17:14. > :17:17.he's feeling. -- catch up with him. I'm a bit nervous. I want to make

:17:17. > :17:21.sure I get the response from the players, the staff and the

:17:21. > :17:29.supporters. What kind of reception the think you'll get out there

:17:29. > :17:33.tonight? It is always a sensitive time, a change of management.

:17:33. > :17:38.will soon give you a team talk to the players, what what you say to

:17:38. > :17:46.them? I will tell them to be relaxed, to express themselves, and

:17:46. > :17:51.to think about giving a good account of themselves. I need to

:17:52. > :17:57.know exactly what they're about. Keith Curle will be working out of

:17:57. > :18:03.this tunnel in less than one hour's time, for the first time, here at

:18:03. > :18:07.Meadow Lane. They take on Stevenage tonight. A tough game. It will be

:18:07. > :18:17.interesting to see how the fans react. Martin Allen was a big

:18:17. > :18:18.

:18:18. > :18:25.character he has -- be carried to hear that Meadow Lane. One way to

:18:25. > :18:33.get them on side will be to get a win tonight. We will oppose what on

:18:33. > :18:37.all the goals tonight in a late bulletin. Thank you their match. --

:18:37. > :18:41.thank you very much. Calls have been made for the

:18:41. > :18:44.football association to offer more support to gay footballers. We've

:18:44. > :18:49.two of the country's leading gay friendly teams in this region, the

:18:49. > :18:52.Leicester Wildecats and the Nottingham BallBois. There are no

:18:52. > :18:53.openly gay British professional footballers. And last night

:18:53. > :19:03.campaigners, players, administrators and fans gathered in

:19:03. > :19:06.

:19:06. > :19:10.Nottingham to debate the subject. There are 5,000 professional

:19:10. > :19:14.footballers in the UK, not one of them is openly gay. The last player

:19:14. > :19:21.to come out was Justin Fashanu, 20 years ago. He played for Nottingham

:19:21. > :19:25.Forest, before announcing he was day after his career. He committed

:19:25. > :19:31.suicide. There have been calls for the next Justin Fashanu to get him

:19:31. > :19:38.more support. His homosexuality was part of his death. Benn is no part

:19:38. > :19:46.of that. His suicide note felt that he wears a mask and to the family.

:19:46. > :19:49.He had a very difficult time when he came out. This to a permanent --

:19:49. > :19:55.this team are predominantly gay. The feeling is that it is becoming

:19:55. > :19:59.less than issue. I don't think people are that they have any more.

:19:59. > :20:03.Quins have none of them. They say they welcome a professional player

:20:04. > :20:09.coming out. Will anyone be brave enough? And Environment has not

:20:10. > :20:17.been created by raid a player can come out of he wants to. Someone

:20:17. > :20:27.has to break the taboo. When Gareth Thomas came out in that we, there

:20:27. > :20:29.

:20:29. > :20:33.is a great opportunity. - back came out in the map the world. Back at

:20:33. > :20:38.Nottingham University, there are calls to put the support networks

:20:38. > :20:42.in place. If it does happen, I think it will be Miliband and

:20:42. > :20:46.player. Safety in numbers. There will be not as much attention on

:20:46. > :20:49.one person. Nottingham Rugby Club have been

:20:49. > :20:52.forced to play a Championship match on their training pitch. The re-

:20:52. > :20:54.arranged game clashed with football at their usual home, Meadow Lane,

:20:54. > :20:59.with the rugby authorities insisting they pressed ahead with

:20:59. > :21:02.it. So special arrangements were made at the Lady Bay Sports Ground

:21:02. > :21:05.in Nottingham. And the team's ran out with a temporary marquee and

:21:05. > :21:08.crowd barriers around the training pitch. There was a strong wind and

:21:08. > :21:18.it was wet. Not ideal conditions but Nottingham went on to beat

:21:18. > :21:21.Leeds by 24-11. One of the oldest marathons in the

:21:21. > :21:27.country is not being held this year. The Robin Hood Marathon in

:21:27. > :21:29.Nottingham has been going for more than 30 years. Last year the

:21:29. > :21:33.Festival of Running had 12,000 entries, with 1,500 doing the

:21:33. > :21:36.marathon. But the organisers say busier roads and an increasing

:21:36. > :21:39.population means the event isn't a safe or viable option. They say

:21:39. > :21:49.they're committed to re-staging the race over a different course in the
