:00:07. > :00:13.This is East Midlands Today. Our top story: they have been there for

:00:13. > :00:17.four months now they have a week to leave. Occupy Nottingham protesters

:00:17. > :00:21.face eviction but say they will fight on. The fact that the council

:00:21. > :00:27.are moving us on the shows they are not listening to the people, they

:00:27. > :00:32.are trying to dictate to the people. Under-par asked dupe students from

:00:32. > :00:36.Broxtowe have gone to university but now an East Midlands

:00:36. > :00:39.entrepreneur of is helping them bill for a brighter future.

:00:39. > :00:44.Plus a phone tracker guides police to the wrong house with the

:00:44. > :00:48.damaging results. Very sparse evidence for breaking down the door,

:00:48. > :00:54.especially when the cost of the door is more than the I phoned to

:00:54. > :00:58.start. And can culture keep our cities ahead of the curve? From

:00:58. > :01:08.musicals to cinema, we will look at whether Leicester's vision for a

:01:08. > :01:16.

:01:16. > :01:20.cultural quarter is heading in the Good evening. First tonight,

:01:20. > :01:24.occupied protesters have been given a week to leave Nottingham's Market

:01:24. > :01:30.Square. The notice was served by the council this afternoon. There

:01:30. > :01:33.are still dozens of 10s there in a camp that were set up last October.

:01:33. > :01:41.The protesters say they are on public land and they will fight the

:01:41. > :01:45.eviction in court. They have been here for more than

:01:45. > :01:49.130 days as part of the global protest against the international

:01:49. > :01:54.financial system. This camp has become a prominent landmark but now

:01:54. > :01:57.they have been told they will be evicted. The city council says it

:01:57. > :02:02.has allowed the protesters to make their point and it has tried to

:02:02. > :02:06.negotiate with them but now it is time to move on. We support their

:02:06. > :02:12.right to protest and it is important people feel they can do

:02:12. > :02:16.that. On the other hand, we have had complaints. This is a public

:02:16. > :02:20.highway and the responsibility of the council to keep it clear.

:02:20. > :02:25.protesters say their tents on land that belongs to all citizens and

:02:25. > :02:29.they put up notices to say they will treat an eviction as trespass

:02:30. > :02:34.and claim thousands of pounds in compensation. If the council think

:02:34. > :02:40.that pushing us off the square we will be out of sight and disappear,

:02:40. > :02:44.quite the reverse. It will strengthen us and we will be back

:02:44. > :02:49.day-in, day-out. We will hold our meetings here, we are not going to

:02:49. > :02:55.go. Outside the camp there are strong views on both sides of the

:02:55. > :03:01.argument. They are doing a good job. If they want to stop here, let them

:03:01. > :03:08.stay. Leave them where they are. It does look a bit of a mess. I would

:03:08. > :03:16.get rid of it. One of them now? we all moved in, what will it be

:03:16. > :03:19.like? Definitely go. This is one of Britain's last surviving occupied

:03:19. > :03:26.camps but after well over four months it looks as though time is

:03:26. > :03:32.running out. Jeremy is with us. Why is it taking

:03:32. > :03:36.them so long? The council has tried a softly-softly approach. They have

:03:36. > :03:39.negotiated with the protesters and they thought they had an agreement

:03:40. > :03:45.for this can to be scaled down but the talks have broken down and

:03:45. > :03:49.today, this notice has been served on the protesters. Why do the

:03:49. > :03:54.protesters think they will win this? They say they are not

:03:54. > :03:58.committing any crime. We all have a legal right to protest and this is

:03:58. > :04:04.a battle over whether they are trespassing on not. The council

:04:04. > :04:08.says it owns its land said they are trespassing. The protesters say it

:04:08. > :04:16.is his land belonging to everyone and the courts will decide who is

:04:16. > :04:19.right. Thank you. Still to come: more details about

:04:19. > :04:25.the Queen's Jubilee tour of Leicester with the Duchess of

:04:25. > :04:29.Cambridge. 41 lucky student could be a huge step in the right

:04:29. > :04:38.direction if his or her desire is chosen to be worn by the Duchess. -

:04:38. > :04:43.- design. A house owner says he is angry that

:04:43. > :04:47.police are refusing to repair the damage they caused after they broke

:04:47. > :04:51.down his door looking for a stolen phone which was not there.

:04:51. > :04:54.Nottinghamshire police have admitted they based some of their

:04:54. > :05:00.information on the phone's apparent location by using satellite

:05:00. > :05:03.tracking technology on the stolen phone. But Robert Persis he

:05:03. > :05:10.believes tracking software like that is not accurate enough to

:05:10. > :05:15.pinpoint a single house. In show what in Nottingham, or

:05:15. > :05:19.Robert checks out a house he is renovating. He is angry his front

:05:19. > :05:24.door remains damaged. It was broken down by police officers who

:05:24. > :05:28.believed a burglar and stolen I phone were inside. They were not.

:05:28. > :05:33.Although the police paid for temporary boarding up, Robert has

:05:33. > :05:36.been quoted nearly 500 to repair the door and surround. But the

:05:36. > :05:40.police solicitors have written saying he will not receive

:05:40. > :05:45.compensation because the police reasonably believed an offender was

:05:46. > :05:50.in the house. The stubborn phone had an application called find my

:05:50. > :05:53.phone. This means another computer can use satellite technology to

:05:53. > :05:58.track the phone's location. Nottinghamshire police have told us

:05:59. > :06:03.officers at the scene believed this to be accurate down to 8 ft. But

:06:03. > :06:10.Robert believes it is not. They are not accurate. The firm could have

:06:10. > :06:15.been anywhere between 50 yards. It seems very sparse evidence for

:06:15. > :06:21.breaking down a door. Four we asked a scientist for his assessment of

:06:21. > :06:26.the potential accuracy of satellite phone trackers. 20-50 metres range

:06:26. > :06:31.would be reasonable with existing technologies but that could be

:06:31. > :06:35.improved. Roberts says that assessment backed his beneath the

:06:35. > :06:38.phone could have been up to 50 metres from his house. In a

:06:38. > :06:41.statement the police and officers decided to search his property in

:06:41. > :06:46.good faith with the intention of quickly locating an offender and

:06:46. > :06:51.recovering stolen items. However, that decision was not simply made

:06:51. > :06:55.on the basis of phone tracker information but was taken after

:06:55. > :06:59.speaking to a local residents. Robert still believes he is owed

:06:59. > :07:06.compensation and has referred the case to the Independent Police

:07:06. > :07:10.Complaints Commission. In other news, two people have

:07:10. > :07:17.received lengthy prison sentences for the murder of a man from

:07:17. > :07:21.Leicester. 47-year-old Mark Postles and 55-year-old Margaret Heeley

:07:21. > :07:26.killed John Cogan last year. They then dismembered his body and tried

:07:26. > :07:31.to conceal it in the back garden of Postles's house. They pair were

:07:31. > :07:36.found guilty after a trial in Nottingham Crown Court. Each was

:07:36. > :07:40.sentenced to 22 years in prison. The funeral of a boy and his

:07:40. > :07:45.grandmother who both drowned in a lake took place today. The bodies

:07:45. > :07:52.of Dawn Mullany who were 71 and her grandson known as Laurie were found

:07:52. > :07:56.at Holywell more than a week ago. Family and friends gathered for the

:07:56. > :08:01.service in Ketton in Rutland. A 48-year-old man has been arrested

:08:01. > :08:08.on suspicion of arson with intent following a flat fire in Nottingham.

:08:08. > :08:11.Five crews were called to Bentinck Court. A woman was rescued from the

:08:11. > :08:15.balcony on the 14th floor. No one else was injured or evacuated and

:08:15. > :08:23.the man who was arrested has been released on bail pending further

:08:23. > :08:29.inquiries. It's aims are ambitious, it was to

:08:29. > :08:33.change the lives of hundreds of children. How? By it and Investment

:08:33. > :08:38.to break down the barriers to higher education. The first new

:08:38. > :08:41.learning centre called Nottingham Potential opened this afternoon in

:08:41. > :08:51.Broxtowe and it is backed by one of the region's most successful

:08:51. > :08:55.businessmen. It is a hive of activity here in

:08:55. > :08:58.Broxtowe and it is hoped over the next five years, thousands of

:08:58. > :09:04.inner-city children will benefit from what this centre has to offer

:09:04. > :09:09.and it has been made possible by the backing of a local entrepreneur.

:09:09. > :09:13.It is his chance to give something back. David Ross, co-founder of the

:09:13. > :09:18.Carphone Warehouse, has donated more than 2 million of his own

:09:18. > :09:23.money to inspire the next generation to aspire to university.

:09:23. > :09:28.I was lucky, I enjoyed my time at university. Hopefully I learned a

:09:28. > :09:32.little bit and when I visit schools today and there are children there

:09:32. > :09:37.who are not excited and motivated by what they are doing in school,

:09:37. > :09:42.that is a waste of talent. Nottingham Potential is delivered

:09:42. > :09:46.by the University of Nottingham in partnership with the education

:09:46. > :09:51.charity in to university. It is a long-term project to provide

:09:51. > :09:57.support to children as young as seven in deprived areas. It is

:09:57. > :10:06.really fun coming here. It helps me because I'd get one-to-one

:10:06. > :10:12.attention. It is brilliant because they do not teach children like

:10:12. > :10:17.they taught us at school. They come here and it teaches me as well as

:10:17. > :10:20.them. Nottingham North has one of the lowest take a braids to higher

:10:20. > :10:25.education. This scheme aims to break down the barriers facing many

:10:25. > :10:31.young people in the city. It is about giving children that helping

:10:31. > :10:35.hand outside school, with their academic work but also with a

:10:35. > :10:42.future life goals, helping them apply for universities, colleges

:10:42. > :10:46.and jobs. For a number of families who have not experienced university,

:10:46. > :10:52.the whole thing may be seen as complicated and maybe not directly

:10:52. > :10:55.relevant. Hopefully what schemes like this do is give the children

:10:55. > :11:00.and the family is the exposure and involvement to make them realise

:11:01. > :11:05.this is something they can aspire and achieve. This is the first

:11:05. > :11:09.potential centre, two more will follow. It is a multi-million-pound

:11:09. > :11:15.commitment which could help the -- changed the lives of 15,000

:11:15. > :11:21.children over the next five years. I am joined by Dr Penelope Griffin

:11:21. > :11:25.who runs this project. How do children get on this scheme? Most

:11:25. > :11:31.are from less well-off families, probably their parents had not been

:11:31. > :11:35.to university. How do they get referred? They can come a long

:11:35. > :11:40.themselves or their teachers can tell them about us and refer them.

:11:40. > :11:45.The whole bonus is about getting children to university with course

:11:45. > :11:51.fees rising to 9,000 a year, are you raising unrealistic

:11:51. > :11:57.expectations? The truth is this is a really good time for people from

:11:57. > :12:01.less well-off backgrounds to go to university. They do not have to pay

:12:01. > :12:05.fees and after they have graduated and have a good job. There is

:12:05. > :12:11.support from the government and universities. With the tripling of

:12:11. > :12:14.course fees we have seen a drop in applicants. Is that the case at the

:12:14. > :12:18.University of Nottingham? applications have gone up. Students

:12:18. > :12:23.are thinking carefully about where they apply but it is still a good

:12:23. > :12:33.deal. The message tonight is if you want to find out more about into

:12:33. > :12:35.

:12:35. > :12:38.The Queen's Jubilee tour of Britain begins next week and it all starts

:12:38. > :12:41.in Leicester. Not only that - the Queen will be accompanied by the

:12:41. > :12:44.Duchess of Cambridge. As well as the Clock tower and the Cathedral

:12:44. > :12:47.the royal party are visiting De Montfort University where one shoe

:12:47. > :12:50.design student will find out if they've been chosen by the Duchess

:12:50. > :12:58.to make her a pair of shoes. Needless to say - they're all

:12:58. > :13:03.pretty excited at De Mont - and I've been to see them. If fashion

:13:03. > :13:07.is your bag, this is the place to be. We are at to Montfort

:13:07. > :13:11.University School of fashion and textiles. You don't get more of a

:13:11. > :13:15.fashion icon than the Duchess of Cambridge, which is why this place

:13:15. > :13:23.is budging -- buzzing with excitement. We got the phone call

:13:24. > :13:30.three weeks ago, and some of the said would they mind if the Queen

:13:30. > :13:35.launched her Diamond Jubilee tour at our camp has? Many students will

:13:35. > :13:45.be showing their designs in a catwalk show. We are so fortunate.

:13:45. > :13:50.

:13:50. > :13:55.No one gets to meet the Queen, They are six shoe design students

:13:55. > :14:01.who are waiting on tenterhooks. The Duchess is going to choose one of

:14:01. > :14:06.those designers to have the design made up into a shoe that she is

:14:06. > :14:10.going to walk where. You feel like to have already won, because you

:14:10. > :14:16.know she's going to see the design. For there to see it is amazing! I

:14:16. > :14:25.am so excited! It is a bit overwhelming, to be fair. Couple

:14:25. > :14:30.that with a nice dress... That is very sexy. I did my best! What an

:14:30. > :14:33.amazing opportunity for a student, something that they can talk about

:14:33. > :14:37.at interviews, and that will stay with them for the rest of their

:14:37. > :14:43.lives. It is an incredible opportunity for them. The students

:14:43. > :14:50.find out which you has been chosen when the East -- the Queen and

:14:50. > :14:53.Duchess come to the University next week. A woman has been charged with

:14:53. > :14:56.three robberies at bookmakers in Leicester. A member of staff was

:14:56. > :14:59.forced to hand over takings at this bookmakers on Melbourne Road in the

:14:59. > :15:01.Highfields area on Saturday. Two others were targeted last week. A

:15:01. > :15:04.32-year-old woman will appear before Leicester magistrates court

:15:04. > :15:08.next month. A 23 year old man has been arrested and released on

:15:08. > :15:11.police bail. A thousand jobs will be created by Marks and Spencer at

:15:11. > :15:13.their new distribution centre in Castle Donington. The 25-metre-high

:15:13. > :15:17.building will be able to store up to twenty-million products, and

:15:17. > :15:27.will ship out two million items a day when fully operational in March

:15:27. > :15:30.

:15:30. > :15:32.next year. It's being built on the site of the former power station.

:15:32. > :15:35.It's become unreliable and left some people over recent winters

:15:35. > :15:38.without heating at all. But now there are plans afoot to install

:15:38. > :15:40.brand new gas central heating boilers in the homes. Yes,

:15:40. > :15:43.Mansfield District council says the coal fired district heating system

:15:43. > :15:46.on the Oak Tree estate in the town needs replacing. But as Jonathan

:15:46. > :15:56.Cecil reports, the plans to scrap the existing system is dividing

:15:56. > :16:03.

:16:03. > :16:11.Bill has been using a community -- criminal district heating system

:16:11. > :16:15.for years. Water is heated using a coal-fired boiler. The water is

:16:15. > :16:22.pumped around the estate like a conventional system will have it

:16:22. > :16:28.pumped round the house. But the decision has been made to change

:16:28. > :16:32.this, but many do not want it. do not want someone buying my house

:16:32. > :16:39.to pieces. I am going to have a new kitchen next week, and I do not

:16:39. > :16:44.want them finishing the kitchen and then someone coming in to rip my

:16:44. > :16:51.kitchen to pieces just above the boiling -- boiler in. The change is

:16:51. > :16:54.expected to cost 4.5 million. confident that provided the people

:16:54. > :16:59.use the system efficiently, there is a great chance they will be able

:16:59. > :17:05.to reduce their costs. Is it going to be cheaper? You know what the

:17:05. > :17:10.gas companies are like. Labour grit your face off for 10 of profit. I

:17:10. > :17:15.do not believe it will be cheaper. Our staff will be on hand to help

:17:15. > :17:23.those individuals that might have been -- anxieties. We will work

:17:23. > :17:33.with them closely and explained -- explain to them how it will work.

:17:33. > :17:35.

:17:35. > :17:39.Work is due to begin soon and will Coming up, the Notts County player

:17:39. > :17:42.who found himself running to Meadow Lane just in time to play. Its a

:17:42. > :17:45.great story. But I'll start with a fantastic win for Nottingham Forest.

:17:45. > :17:51.The Reds were looking down and out not so long ago but they continued

:17:51. > :17:55.their revival at in-form Birmingham City. Kirsty Edwards reports. The

:17:55. > :17:56.Nottingham Forest manager had every reason to be in a good mood as they

:17:56. > :18:01.arrived at Birmingham. Their side arrived at Birmingham. Their side

:18:01. > :18:08.was about to produce a big shock. Birmingham had not lost at home in

:18:08. > :18:14.the league all season, but Forest are in good form at the moment. How

:18:14. > :18:21.about best that -- Dexter Blackstock? He was in the right

:18:21. > :18:26.place to tuck in the first goal. He has been mainly used as a

:18:27. > :18:31.substitute, but has started the last few games. He had a career

:18:31. > :18:38.threatening him to make -- injury. To come back like that is full

:18:38. > :18:41.credit to him. Birmingham grabbed an equaliser, but Forest, and

:18:41. > :18:48.Dexter Blackstock, were not finished yet. How about this for a

:18:48. > :18:55.winning goal? We are ready pleased for Dexter and his goals. Both

:18:55. > :19:00.teams had a chance to add to their scores. There was -- there was a

:19:00. > :19:06.nervy moment for the Forest defence. We knew it was going to be tough

:19:06. > :19:12.coming here, and they are a very organised side. For us to come here

:19:12. > :19:22.is massive -- come here and get a result is massive for us. Forest

:19:22. > :19:26.

:19:26. > :19:29.are now three points above the then and it's the same for Notts

:19:29. > :19:32.County in league one. New manager Keith Curle kept up his perfect

:19:32. > :19:35.start with another 1-0 win at Meadow Lane. This time against

:19:35. > :19:38.Chesterfield. For one player though it was all a bit of a hair-raising

:19:38. > :19:41.experience. Jon Harley was not named in the team, so he popped out

:19:41. > :19:46.for a haircut. But 15 minutes before kick-off, he got a call from

:19:47. > :19:52.the manager saying he was needed. He said, where are you? For some

:19:52. > :20:00.random reason, I cannot tell him I was having a haircut, I was having

:20:00. > :20:07.a coffee by the ground! He did his warm-up out of the back end of the

:20:07. > :20:11.stadium. One or two people were not happy with the first deliveries,

:20:11. > :20:20.but others happy in the end. As for the game, that was decided in the

:20:20. > :20:30.second half. Alan Judge almost made it 2-0, but he hit the crossbar. He

:20:30. > :20:31.

:20:32. > :20:41.has hit it five times in the last top is a bit longer! I have not

:20:42. > :20:42.

:20:42. > :20:45.quite got that done yet! Batting You can see the action from those

:20:45. > :20:48.two games again on BBC1's Late Kick off tonight which will also have an

:20:48. > :20:50.exclusive feature at home with Derby County captain Shaun Barker.

:20:51. > :20:53.He talks about his obsession for collecting vinyl records and about

:20:53. > :20:56.his amazing parents. That's at 11:05pm tonight. Onto other sport

:20:56. > :20:59.now, starting with an astonishing example of sporting guts from World

:20:59. > :21:02.Superbike rider Leon Haslam. A week ago he broke his leg in a practice

:21:02. > :21:05.crash. But here he is yesterday - leading this group at Australia's

:21:05. > :21:14.Philip Island in the season opener. With the leg pinned together, he

:21:14. > :21:17.finished twelfth in one race and an amazing fifth in the other. In

:21:17. > :21:18.Rugby, Leicester Tigers' captain Geordan Murphy led his team out on

:21:18. > :21:21.Geordan Murphy led his team out on what was his three hundredth

:21:21. > :21:24.appearence. And he led them to a complete demolition of Newcastle.

:21:24. > :21:27.Nice little offload from Murphy here to make sure of Tigers' third

:21:27. > :21:33.try. And in the end there was simply no doubt about their

:21:33. > :21:36.superiority. A top two place is still very much on. Nottingham

:21:36. > :21:39.Panthers had another five and a half thousand crowd in the Ice

:21:39. > :21:42.Arena for their six three win over Cardiff Devils on Saturday night.

:21:42. > :21:44.And actually the three goal gap probably doesn't do the Panthers'

:21:44. > :21:47.performance justice. Nottingham showing good form going into the

:21:47. > :21:57.Challenge Cup final and playoffs - following this win up with another

:21:57. > :21:59.in Fife last night. And finally, huge congratulations to the Derby

:21:59. > :22:01.huge congratulations to the Derby Trailblazers - in the black - who

:22:01. > :22:04.won Basketball's EBL Trophy yesterday afternoon. They beat big

:22:04. > :22:13.rivals Bristol by a comprehensive margin to take the title at

:22:13. > :22:17.Leicester's Braunston Leisure Centre. Everyone got on the

:22:17. > :22:27.scoreboard, and that is rare to happen in a basketball game.

:22:27. > :22:30.

:22:30. > :22:33.Everything went well for us today. From theatre to cinema - it's 13

:22:33. > :22:37.years since the idea to create a cultural quarter in Leicester was

:22:37. > :22:40.first put forward. The aim was to regenerate a run down part of the

:22:40. > :22:43.city centre through the arts. Tonight in the first of a new

:22:43. > :22:46.series looking at the State of the Arts in our cities, Geeta Pendse

:22:46. > :22:56.asks - is the cultural quarter thriving or does it still have

:22:56. > :23:08.

:23:08. > :23:15.further to go? When the Coogan-art Many cities tried to emulate Bill

:23:15. > :23:25.bow's success. That was 13 years ago. It was one of the inspirations

:23:25. > :23:25.

:23:25. > :23:30.behind Leicester's cultural quarter. Since 2009, two venues up popped up.

:23:30. > :23:37.They have seen their visitors numbers rise, but it does not been

:23:37. > :23:47.a smooth journey. It -- the curve of cost 60 million, way over

:23:47. > :23:51.

:23:51. > :23:56.42nd Street had to be extended because of public demand. A change

:23:56. > :24:01.of programming seems have resonated with audiences. We may have put in

:24:01. > :24:11.too many unknown things in the first place, and in hindsight,

:24:11. > :24:19.

:24:19. > :24:22.maybe we should have gone for more Alongside programming, getting

:24:22. > :24:28.people to the cultural quarter is the key. Many people are

:24:28. > :24:33.unconvinced. It is not very nice around here. A lot of people are

:24:33. > :24:40.squarer tears, or where the restaurant is, so I don't think it

:24:40. > :24:43.has been promoted that well yet. Unless -- I think the

:24:43. > :24:49.infrastructure is here, but he is about the people, and if the

:24:49. > :24:53.cultural quarter can put itself any imagination of people, then I think

:24:53. > :24:59.it can deliver. At the moment, I would say the cultural quarter

:25:00. > :25:03.still has to reconnect. It is not just about big venues. These

:25:03. > :25:08.artists are converting a warehouse into studios and the gallery. But

:25:08. > :25:11.they have not felt a part of the cultural quarter. There has been a

:25:11. > :25:16.level of regeneration. They have been a lot of buildings, but it

:25:16. > :25:25.lacks the diversity and the variety which I think a cultural quarter it

:25:25. > :25:31.should have. I figured is only now that people like ourselves are

:25:31. > :25:41.going to be let into the cultural establishment. There is a genuine

:25:41. > :25:45.

:25:45. > :25:51.That makes me want to tap-dance ex- mayor will be a song and dance

:25:51. > :25:55.about the weather? Probably not! was going to tap-dance into the

:25:55. > :26:05.forecast! Despite the mild temperatures, we are looking at a

:26:05. > :26:07.

:26:07. > :26:14.wild couple of days -- brainy couple of days. This was the sunset

:26:14. > :26:19.at Kimberley. Thank you to Brian for sending it in. You can e-mail

:26:19. > :26:23.us your pictures. We started the day on a dry note. We have seen the

:26:23. > :26:31.cloud increasing as we have gone through the afternoon. This warm

:26:31. > :26:35.front is going through the south- east. Some of these outbreaks of

:26:35. > :26:40.rain is -- rain will be heavier at times. It will be heading south-

:26:40. > :26:46.east over the next few hours. It will gradually become dry, however,

:26:46. > :26:51.we are holding on to a lot of cloud. Maybe some rain across the Peak

:26:51. > :26:57.District. These temperatures are what we would expect in the daytime

:26:57. > :27:04.for this time of year! The cloud will break in places to give it

:27:04. > :27:09.some spells of sunshine through the day. It is looking stubborn along

:27:09. > :27:13.Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. Tuesday is expected to be the

:27:13. > :27:17.mildest day of the week. The high pressure stays with us, and we will

:27:17. > :27:21.stay with the mild temperatures, but another cloud the picture,

:27:21. > :27:31.particularly on Wednesday. The temperatures will start to drop off

:27:31. > :27:38.as we head towards the weekend. But a dark and cold the few days ahead!
