:00:05. > :00:15.This is East Midlands Today with Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies.

:00:15. > :00:28.

:00:28. > :00:34.Our top story tonight: The perils of the shisha pipe. We have great

:00:34. > :00:40.fans here at Derby County, but it did happen and we are accountable

:00:40. > :00:47.for it. That hundreds of patients with blood cancer who could benefit

:00:47. > :00:57.from trials about to take place here. Today we have been grilled by

:00:57. > :01:03.

:01:03. > :01:08.these BBC newsroom reporters. Good evening. Welcome to

:01:08. > :01:11.Wednesday's programme. First tonight: It is said that using one

:01:11. > :01:15.for an hour is like smoking more than 100 cigarettes, but it seems

:01:15. > :01:17.that many people are unaware of the dangers of shisha pipes. Many

:01:17. > :01:20.councils are now considering bringing in licensing for shisha

:01:20. > :01:30.cafes, to try to deal with the growing number of back-street

:01:30. > :01:43.

:01:43. > :01:48.premises. Angelina Socci reports. I am not worried, because they

:01:48. > :01:55.don't smoke a lot. A I have been smoking since it was 18 and haven't

:01:55. > :01:59.seen any harm, yet. I think everyone who smokes knows the side-

:01:59. > :02:04.effects of tobacco. And growing number of shisha bars have opened

:02:04. > :02:11.up. Now there are more than 30 in the East Midlands. This is

:02:12. > :02:17.something that health professionals are worried about. Their tobacco in

:02:18. > :02:23.healed from as she should pipe in one hour is the same two -- is the

:02:23. > :02:27.same as a hundred cigarettes. think this is a time bomb. I think

:02:27. > :02:32.you will see a lot more people with lung cancer, heart attacks at a

:02:32. > :02:38.young age to do not think there are causing any harm. It is not just

:02:38. > :02:43.people's health that is causing concern. Since the smoking ban was

:02:43. > :02:47.introduced, some premises have been operating illegally by allowing

:02:47. > :02:52.customers to operate indoors. The council says it is time for tighter

:02:52. > :02:57.regulations. One option is to look at injunctions to stop people

:02:58. > :03:01.smoking in enclosed areas. Another possibility is looking at licensing,

:03:01. > :03:08.but it is early days to see if there is any legislation that would

:03:08. > :03:11.allow that take place. These are all issues that are being discussed.

:03:11. > :03:16.While there has been a steady decline in cigarette smokers, the

:03:16. > :03:20.worry is that this could now be a new gateway for people to become

:03:20. > :03:23.addicted to tobacco. Sociologist Rania Hafez is a

:03:23. > :03:33.research fellow at the University of Derby. Earlier she told me she

:03:33. > :03:33.

:03:33. > :03:39.would like to see more shisha bars. I think she Shem bars have been a

:03:39. > :03:44.great addition to our city centres. Going round their East Midlands to

:03:44. > :03:49.see a lot of segregated communities, but these shisha bars have brought

:03:49. > :03:54.people from different communities together. They can socialise in a

:03:54. > :04:01.clean, young way and I think it is a great edition. You are from the

:04:01. > :04:07.Lebanon, how important is she share smocking to your family? My mother

:04:07. > :04:15.smokes the shisha, so does my great-grandmother, my hands and 80

:04:15. > :04:19.something that really empowers women. It is unhealthy. It is the

:04:19. > :04:25.equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes. Actually, it is not.

:04:25. > :04:30.You don't light up a shisha pipe 20 times a day. But the end of the day,

:04:30. > :04:35.if people go to her she should bar once or twice a week, may be much

:04:35. > :04:42.less, it is a lovely way to engage in something that adults enjoy. It

:04:42. > :04:46.is adults who can decide for themselves. Many things we can do

:04:46. > :04:56.in excess that are harmful to us, but we can make a decision as to

:04:56. > :05:00.

:05:00. > :05:03.how much you want to engage in it and enjoy it.

:05:03. > :05:05.Next tonight, Derby County has apologised to the family of the

:05:06. > :05:10.former Nottingham Forest owner Nigel Doughty for what it describes

:05:10. > :05:13.as insensitive and distasteful chanting at last night's game. Many

:05:13. > :05:17.Derby and Forest supporters were upset by what they heard at Pride

:05:17. > :05:26.Park. Mr Doughty died last month after more than a decade at the

:05:26. > :05:33.City Ground. His own father was at the match. Mike O'Sullivan reports.

:05:33. > :05:38.It was a sell-out, 33,000 at Pride Park last night. As a Derby player

:05:38. > :05:44.lay injured, some Derby fans taunted their rivals about the

:05:44. > :05:52.former Forest owner Nigel Doughty, who died last month, chanting where

:05:52. > :05:59.has you're chairman gone? Today derby County said they had written

:05:59. > :06:04.to apologise to his father, Ted, who was at the match, and to

:06:04. > :06:09.Nottingham Forest. We regret and are embarrassed at what happened.

:06:09. > :06:14.We are accountable for that. We have great fans, but we don't want

:06:14. > :06:24.to condone anything like this. We are sorry that it happened.

:06:24. > :06:43.

:06:43. > :06:47.His family must feel of love those type of comments. It must be bad

:06:47. > :06:53.enough without this kind of comments. I support Nottingham

:06:53. > :06:59.Forest, but I think that is disgusting. They shouldn't have

:06:59. > :07:04.done its. It is a bit cruel. I hope the people who had chanted that are

:07:04. > :07:08.ashamed of themselves tonight. This is football, a sport. We are

:07:08. > :07:12.talking about a man's life here. They are chanting came from that

:07:12. > :07:16.corner of the ground and Derby County are appealing for any

:07:16. > :07:20.supporters of information to contact them in confidence. At the

:07:20. > :07:23.moment the police are not involved. Still to come on the programme:

:07:23. > :07:33.Celebrating on ice - the Panthers enjoy their moment at the National

:07:33. > :07:35.

:07:35. > :07:40.Ice centre after retaining the A two-year-old boy has died after

:07:40. > :07:43.he was taken ill at home. One line of inquiry the police are

:07:43. > :07:49.investigating is the possibility he may have swallowed some methadone.

:07:49. > :07:56.Methadone is the legally prescribed substitute for heroin. A man and a

:07:56. > :08:02.woman have been arrested. From Derby, Simon Hare reports.

:08:02. > :08:08.Teddies and let the memory of a young life which ended all too soon.

:08:08. > :08:14.The two-year-old was taken ill at a flat above this former off-licence.

:08:14. > :08:19.He died in hospital shortly afterwards. A 41-year-old man and

:08:19. > :08:24.32-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of murder. No one from

:08:24. > :08:34.the playgroup that Reilly attended wanted to talk. Parents of other

:08:34. > :08:34.

:08:34. > :08:40.children continued to least -- to leave flowers and toys at the scene.

:08:40. > :08:44.He was a happy little boy. At post mortem examination on the boy

:08:44. > :08:48.yesterday proved to be inconclusive. Detectives are waiting on the

:08:48. > :08:55.results of toxicology tests as one theory there working on is that the

:08:55. > :09:01.boy might have consumed some methadone. Whatever has happened

:09:01. > :09:03.here, a real sense of sadness at the loss of a two-year-old boy.

:09:03. > :09:07.Police are investigating an armed robbery at a Nottinghamshire

:09:07. > :09:09.supermarket. Three men entered Tesco Extra in Hucknall at around

:09:09. > :09:14.10.45pm last night and assaulted a security guard with what is

:09:14. > :09:18.believed to be a metal bar. The men then stole cash and left in a

:09:18. > :09:21.waiting car. Police are appealing for people who may have been near

:09:21. > :09:27.the store at the time to get in touch as they may hold vital

:09:27. > :09:33.information. Veterans involved in nuclear tests

:09:33. > :09:36.in the 1950's have lost their claim for compensation. Archie Ross, from

:09:36. > :09:40.Castle Gresley in South Derbyshire, is among hundreds of servicemen who

:09:40. > :09:43.witnessed the tests near Christmas Island in the South Pacific. Many

:09:43. > :09:47.claim it led to serious health problems for them and their

:09:47. > :09:56.children. Families of the veterans say they're disappointed with the

:09:56. > :10:03.ruling. Staff from across the emergency

:10:03. > :10:05.services... Staff from across the emergency services took part in a

:10:05. > :10:07.major training exercise to simulate a chemical incident in Nottingham

:10:07. > :10:10.city centre. Fire, police, ambulance and emergency planners

:10:10. > :10:14.from the city council were simulating what would happen in the

:10:14. > :10:21.event of a chemical attack at the Ice Arena. Organisers say it is one

:10:21. > :10:23.of the largest training operations they have carried out. Every 20

:10:23. > :10:27.minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.

:10:27. > :10:30.As few as half of the adult patients who have it will survive,

:10:30. > :10:32.so clinical trials of new ways to fight the cancer are vital.

:10:32. > :10:35.Nottingham City Hospital treats hundreds of people with blood

:10:35. > :10:38.cancers each year and it has just linked up with centres across the

:10:38. > :10:41.country. It's expected that the new network will speed up research, and

:10:41. > :10:49.today it won the backing of former England and Forest player Geoff

:10:49. > :10:55.Thomas. Jo Healey reports. two years ago James was diagnosed

:10:55. > :10:59.with acute myeloid leukaemia. He was 21. He had a stem cell

:10:59. > :11:04.transplant last year. If people don't take part in these drug

:11:04. > :11:10.trials, how do you find out which struck his best? I suppose it is

:11:10. > :11:17.helping others. Does it help you? believe so. I was treated with

:11:17. > :11:22.trial -- with trial drugs, and I'm still here! Three new clinical

:11:22. > :11:27.trials are about to start up. The Nottingham unit has now linked up

:11:27. > :11:32.with 13 centres across the UK, which means that this will speed up

:11:32. > :11:37.the process between research in research and medicine for patients.

:11:37. > :11:44.Former England player Geoff Thomas is also a former blood cancer

:11:44. > :11:48.patient. He backs up the leukaemia charity that is set up this new

:11:48. > :11:53.infrastructure for trials. It is important. I have known people who

:11:53. > :11:59.have gone on a clinical trial when they have only got a few months to

:11:59. > :12:06.live. People have had such good responses to those trials that

:12:06. > :12:12.there are still here today. This unit is one of the biggest centres,

:12:12. > :12:17.where the sea up to 400 new patients seats year. I think this

:12:17. > :12:21.is crucially important. We know that the outcome for patients with

:12:21. > :12:27.blood cancers has improved, but we need to evaluate new drugs quickly

:12:27. > :12:31.so we can bring them forward to the clinics. James has reached those

:12:31. > :12:36.benefits. He is now in remission and looking forward to a healthy

:12:36. > :12:38.future. The number of people without a job

:12:38. > :12:41.in the East Midlands continues to rise. New quarterly labour market

:12:41. > :12:44.figures show the jobless total for the region stands at 187,000. That

:12:44. > :12:47.is an increase of 5,000 in the three months from November to

:12:47. > :12:49.January. The unemployment rate is 8.2% which is just below the

:12:49. > :12:52.national average. Our reporter Helen Astle's been talking to

:12:52. > :13:02.people in Leicestershire desperate to find a job and those fortunate

:13:02. > :13:06.

:13:06. > :13:14.enough to have an apprenticeship. These two men are not just building

:13:14. > :13:17.walls, they are building a future. They are being paid to be trained

:13:17. > :13:22.to act as social and a Prius Green -- Social Enterprise scheme in

:13:22. > :13:27.Leicester. I am happy to be here because before I came I was doing

:13:27. > :13:31.nothing, bored, living off my mum. We didn't have any money. Coming

:13:31. > :13:37.here meant something because I was earning a good look after myself

:13:37. > :13:42.and do things that I wanted to do without relying on my mum. Jade is

:13:42. > :13:49.a trainee hairdresser. She has an apprenticeship. Most of them went

:13:49. > :13:54.to college straight after school, and I didn't. Now they have

:13:54. > :13:59.finished college and can get a job. I as unemployment rises, there is

:13:59. > :14:03.concern for young people you're not in education or training. A my

:14:03. > :14:08.concern for them is that they will not be able to get the job.

:14:08. > :14:12.Colleges are limited in their vacancies, so that they haven't

:14:12. > :14:18.achieved what they should in school, the colleges will not be able to

:14:18. > :14:24.take them. The future for them is that we won't break the cycle of

:14:24. > :14:29.unemployment. Phil is completing a computer course. He is desperate to

:14:29. > :14:34.find a job. No matter what you apply poor or word you go, it is

:14:34. > :14:39.impossible. Rid should is a qualified electrician who has been

:14:39. > :14:47.out of work since November despite applying for many jobs. You just

:14:47. > :14:52.can't do think, why me? We live get any better? Richard has got a job

:14:52. > :14:58.interview tomorrow and it could mean one less person unemployed and

:14:58. > :15:01.for Richard the start of a new life. Still to come on the programme:

:15:01. > :15:11.Strictly journalism - dance stars Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag get a

:15:11. > :15:12.

:15:12. > :15:16.grilling at the hands of some young, but keen, reporters.

:15:16. > :15:21.After a week of dry but cloudy weather, we finally had some rain

:15:22. > :15:31.on the way. I will be packed with the forecast at the end of the

:15:32. > :15:38.

:15:38. > :15:41.programme. Well, as we said earlier, it is No

:15:41. > :15:44.Smoking Day today and a family in Derbyshire has plenty to celebrate.

:15:44. > :15:47.Three generations have managed to give up cigarettes and tobacco, all

:15:47. > :15:49.at the same time, and there is a special reason why. Becky Sheeran

:15:49. > :15:51.reports. This is a family their shares more

:15:51. > :15:55.than just jeans. They are sharing will power. Three generations have

:15:55. > :15:59.stopped smoking at the same time, but it has not been easy. At first

:15:59. > :16:05.I thought it would be quite impossible. The first two weeks

:16:05. > :16:09.were pretty hard, but it gets easier. I still have the odd day

:16:09. > :16:16.when I think about them, but I have a spray of my missed and it goes

:16:16. > :16:21.away. What made them go up? Another generation is under way. She is

:16:21. > :16:27.living with me and my husband and she will be coming back to our

:16:27. > :16:32.house and I don't want a baby coming into a smoky environment.

:16:32. > :16:36.with support from a local NHS service, instead of reaching for

:16:36. > :16:40.cigarettes they are keeping themselves busy. It is a brilliant,

:16:40. > :16:43.brilliant story and it is good that people can stop us a family because

:16:43. > :16:47.they get to be able to support each other and they don't have the

:16:47. > :16:54.problems of somebody else smoking around them. This is unusual

:16:54. > :16:58.because we have so many unusual -- so many generations of the family

:16:58. > :17:03.stopping together. The family hope that this will inspire people to

:17:03. > :17:07.stop. I would advise them to stop smoking, because the baby doesn't

:17:07. > :17:12.have the choice in a matter if you're smoking are not, so you are

:17:12. > :17:17.harming the baby. This way if you stop smoking, he does not have to

:17:17. > :17:24.take that tower into his body. isn't easy, but you have got to use

:17:24. > :17:27.you will power, and if you want to quit, you will.

:17:27. > :17:31.It was the big derby last night of course with the Rams against Forest

:17:31. > :17:34.and, as ever, there was plenty of drama. There were of course the

:17:34. > :17:38.crowd chants which we covered earlier in the programme. Then

:17:38. > :17:47.there was a nasty injury to Derby's captain. As for the result, well,

:17:47. > :17:54.the Rams did their first double over Forest in 40 years. It is a

:17:54. > :17:58.match that is always about far more than just three points. The come on

:17:58. > :18:03.Derby! The come on Nottingham Forest! It is all about the

:18:03. > :18:07.bragging rights. This is the one we want to win. I think you will do it

:18:08. > :18:15.tonight. It would mean to world, really. Nothing better than beating

:18:15. > :18:19.them. It would mean an awful lot. The players know all too well what

:18:19. > :18:23.it means to their fans, but well the first half was hard fought,

:18:23. > :18:29.chances were limited. Things barking delight in the second, but

:18:29. > :18:34.then Derby suffered a real blow. Derby's captain delighted with his

:18:34. > :18:43.keeper. The club has said that his knee injury will be out for the

:18:43. > :18:50.rest of the season. We will have to get on with it without him, but it

:18:50. > :18:55.will be a great mess. A real spell of pressure was to follow from it

:18:55. > :18:59.the Rams as they went in desperate search of a breakthrough. There was

:18:59. > :19:05.just a minute left of normal time when Nottingham Forest found

:19:05. > :19:11.themselves down to 10 men. Into injury time and for drama was to

:19:11. > :19:18.come. Jonathan Greening was adjudged to have gone into high.

:19:18. > :19:21.Jake Buxton grabbed a late, late winner. Disappointment and heard

:19:21. > :19:27.for everybody connected to Nottingham Forest tonight. The

:19:27. > :19:31.players had given them all. I disagree with the free kick. We are

:19:31. > :19:36.disappointed with that, but not with the effort we put in.

:19:36. > :19:42.thought we put them under pressure all through the game. They defended

:19:42. > :19:46.extremely well. We don't score too many late goals, so hopefully that

:19:46. > :19:50.will be the first of a few more to come.

:19:50. > :19:54.The plot thickens at Leicester. So says manager Nigel Pearson anyway.

:19:54. > :20:00.Just when some were ruling City out of a play-off spot, they go and

:20:00. > :20:05.beat Birmingham 3-1. Mark Shardlow has more.

:20:06. > :20:13.When the referee awarded Birmingham an ordinary -- award gives them an

:20:13. > :20:19.early penalty, it seemed like a harsh decision. Birmingham might

:20:19. > :20:23.easily have finished the game off shortly afterwards. A shot hit the

:20:23. > :20:31.bar. Leicester were fortunate. Leicester dusted themselves down

:20:31. > :20:37.and got back into the game. It was level at half-time. Leicester were

:20:37. > :20:41.the better side, yet time seemed to be slipping away when a lovely ball

:20:41. > :20:46.gave them a chance. The young striker kept his head and with 10

:20:46. > :20:50.minutes to go Leicester were at last in the lead. Jermaine Beckford

:20:50. > :20:54.found himself in a similar position in injury time and again he

:20:54. > :20:58.completed the move to score his second of the night and Leicester's

:20:58. > :21:02.third. They moved to 11th in the table and they're still in with a

:21:02. > :21:05.fighting chance. In the Conference, Mansfield Town's

:21:05. > :21:07.charge towards a promotion place continued with an injury time

:21:07. > :21:15.equaliser against league leaders Fleetwood. They are now unbeaten in

:21:15. > :21:18.six games. Some news from League One - Notts

:21:18. > :21:23.County have signed the Leeds United winger Lloyd Sam. He will stay on

:21:23. > :21:25.loan until the end of the season. There were celebrations last night

:21:26. > :21:29.at the National Ice Centre as the Nottingham Panthers retained the

:21:29. > :21:39.Challenge Cup. They beat league leaders Belfast Giants 5-3 on the

:21:39. > :21:40.

:21:40. > :21:46.night, 10-4 on aggregate. It is a trophy that Panthers and

:21:46. > :21:52.their fans love. This was their third successive title, they're fit

:21:52. > :22:02.in nine years. This was the most emphatic win. Thrilled. So much

:22:02. > :22:11.excitement here. We did smash them pretty good. It means history. The

:22:11. > :22:18.Watford team has done this before. They had a four-goal advantage from

:22:18. > :22:23.the first leg. They soon put the game out of reach. The win was

:22:23. > :22:27.comfortable and sweet. The Panthers now have their sights set on a

:22:27. > :22:30.double. Finally from me tonight, a quick

:22:30. > :22:33.line on rugby. The Leicester Tigers legend Dean Richards will soon be

:22:33. > :22:36.back in the front line. He is taking over as head coach at

:22:36. > :22:46.Newcastle in the summer. Richards was banned for three years after

:22:46. > :22:48.

:22:48. > :22:51.being implicated in a fake blood injury during a European Cup match.

:22:51. > :22:55.Tomorrow is BBC School Report Day, when classrooms around the country

:22:55. > :22:59.become newsrooms. For weeks now schools across our region have been

:22:59. > :23:02.busy preparing for the big day. Students in Ashbourne decided they

:23:02. > :23:06.wanted a big name interview for their bulletin, and not just one

:23:06. > :23:09.big name either. No, they managed to bag two of the biggest stars

:23:09. > :23:19.from Strictly Come Dancing. So, how did they get on interviewing Anton

:23:19. > :23:23.

:23:23. > :23:32.du Beke and Erin Boag? Let's find out. Here's their report.

:23:32. > :23:37.Please welcome the stars of her show, Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag.

:23:37. > :23:43.They have now brought their own show to Derby. What do you ask have

:23:43. > :23:48.such big stars? We started by doing her research. It will be quite

:23:48. > :23:52.difficult because we can't make a mistake. If something goes wrong,

:23:52. > :24:01.we can just say can you come back later because they have issued to

:24:01. > :24:06.do. We have got to get it right first time. I am again and we are

:24:06. > :24:15.all here to interview Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag from Strictly Come

:24:15. > :24:19.Dancing. Do you still enjoy dancing or is it just a job? It is not just

:24:19. > :24:25.the job. We love what we do and we are very lucky to be able to do

:24:25. > :24:29.something that we love as a living. Somebody once said if you can two-

:24:30. > :24:36.year hobby as a job that is the perfect situation. Are the judges

:24:36. > :24:46.the same off-camera as they are on show? We never know, we don't meet

:24:46. > :24:56.them. Good judges are all really nice people. I know sometimes it is

:24:56. > :24:58.

:24:58. > :25:01.hard to believe, but they all are, really. It was really exciting.

:25:01. > :25:07.They were really nice. Anton Du Beke was funny and Duke around a

:25:07. > :25:13.lot. You get to introduce celebrities, not just people on the

:25:13. > :25:17.street, but I might go for it as a job. That was Anton Du Beke and

:25:17. > :25:21.Erin Boag in Derby. It was a fantastic opportunity and really

:25:21. > :25:24.enjoyed meeting them. Good luck to all the students

:25:24. > :25:28.taking part in the news day. We will, of course, have more reports

:25:28. > :25:31.on tomorrows programme. Time for the weather now and Sara's been

:25:31. > :25:41.taking the air this evening on the banks of the river Trent in

:25:41. > :25:46.

:25:46. > :25:51.It is just starting to turn a little bit chilly here now. I must

:25:51. > :25:56.say a quick a load of the kids at the Malcolm Sargent primary-school

:25:56. > :26:02.who were also having a go at the weather with me the other day. We

:26:02. > :26:09.all had a good time. It will be called tonight as the skies will be

:26:09. > :26:14.relatively clear in the region. Whether Clyde has broken it will be

:26:14. > :26:17.misty tonight. The night-time temperature will be a minimum of

:26:17. > :26:22.four degree Celsius. There is the chance of a slight air frost for

:26:22. > :26:26.the early part of this evening. The cloud will increase from the north.

:26:26. > :26:30.Tomorrow morning will start off quite cloudy and misty with a lot

:26:30. > :26:36.of low cloud around, and it will be thick enough at times to produce

:26:36. > :26:41.some drizzle. Will gradually start to cure away towards the coast. We

:26:41. > :26:49.will get to see the cloud thinning and breaking at times. Again, I

:26:49. > :26:56.could be a bit hit and miss, but riven -- but we will get to see a

:26:57. > :27:00.few sunny spells around. We also have a dry day in store for Friday.

:27:00. > :27:05.There might be more of a breeze picking up on Friday coming for him

:27:05. > :27:08.from the south-west, so there could be more chances to see a break in

:27:08. > :27:12.the cloud. From Friday night into Saturday the cloud will really

:27:12. > :27:19.start to increase again Anne's the weather will change for Saturday

:27:19. > :27:24.and Sunday. It will keep things quite wet on Saturday, and probably

:27:24. > :27:29.overnight and into Sunday as well. It could produce up to four

:27:29. > :27:33.centimetres of rain during the day on Saturday and the first part of
