:00:06. > :00:13.This is East Midlands Today. Our top story tonight:

:00:13. > :00:18.The bond between siblings that just got even more special.

:00:18. > :00:24.Yes, tonight a sister has given the pressures in gift of a kidney to

:00:24. > :00:31.her brother, all because of a desperate shortage of donors.

:00:31. > :00:41.And the moments tonight that a man attacked an antiques dealer.

:00:41. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:55.attacked me with a screwdriver and told me to get on the ground.

:00:55. > :01:03.

:01:03. > :01:10.Nottingham Forest's magnificent You could call it the ultimate

:01:10. > :01:14.present. A sister has given her brother the gift of life by

:01:14. > :01:21.donating her kidney today. Kalvender Khuman has spent years

:01:21. > :01:24.having dialysis, waiting for a transplant. And as someone from the

:01:24. > :01:27.Asian community, he knew only too well that a shortage of kidney

:01:27. > :01:29.donors might mean he never got a transplant. The operation is being

:01:29. > :01:39.carried out this evening at Leicester General Hospital. Let's

:01:39. > :01:41.

:01:41. > :01:46.go live to our Health Correspondent. This is a major kidney transplant

:01:46. > :01:50.centre in the East Midlands and what a difference a day makes. This

:01:50. > :01:56.is the day that Kalvender has been waiting for for so long after being

:01:56. > :01:59.on dialysis and fearing that he would not get another chance. That

:01:59. > :02:05.operation is still continuing and we will have the latest for you a

:02:05. > :02:09.bit later. It has been an emotional day for his relatives.

:02:09. > :02:19.A kidney transplant, one of the miracles of modern minute --

:02:19. > :02:22.

:02:22. > :02:26.miracles. For this man, it is a new lease of life. He can go out

:02:26. > :02:32.without having to think about the dialysis and things like that. It

:02:32. > :02:36.will be just amazing once it is all done. A successful transfer at

:02:36. > :02:42.should bring end end to years of dialysis. The headline news in

:02:42. > :02:47.Leicester tonight seemed to say it all. A we were just talking about

:02:47. > :02:57.it a few weeks ago and that all of a sudden, before you know it the

:02:57. > :03:00.

:03:00. > :03:05.day is here. It has taken months to get this far. But I am so amazed

:03:05. > :03:12.and overwhelmed. I cannot describe how I am feeling. The family

:03:12. > :03:18.discovered the sister was a perfect match only two weeks ago. Today,

:03:19. > :03:23.the sunshine only seemed to match the joy of the family.

:03:23. > :03:28.The latest from the hospital is that the donor is doing very well.

:03:28. > :03:38.She is recovering at her kidney has been taken out. Her family is very

:03:38. > :03:43.

:03:43. > :03:48.pleased that the operation has Commonwealth -- has gone well. The

:03:48. > :03:51.family are hoping to speak to Kalvender later on. There are lots

:03:51. > :03:57.of people on the kidney waiting list.

:03:57. > :04:04.Yes, there are. Just in the East Midlands, 573 people as of

:04:04. > :04:08.yesterday are way -- are waiting for a transplant. 20 % of those are

:04:08. > :04:13.from the Asian communities. That should not really come as a

:04:13. > :04:23.surprise because there are a shortage of kidney donors from the

:04:23. > :04:24.

:04:24. > :04:32.Asian communities. There is no way that the man will take this Ginnie

:04:32. > :04:39.for granted. He had -- will take this kidney for granted. He had a

:04:39. > :04:44.prior chairs play at that did not work. -- trends play at that did

:04:44. > :04:47.It was one of the worst kept political secrets in many years.

:04:47. > :04:51.When the Chancellor rose to his feet at 12:31pm to present his

:04:51. > :04:54.third Budget, most of us already had a good idea of what was in his

:04:54. > :04:57.red box. But Mr Osborne still managed to spring one or two

:04:57. > :04:59.surprises. Here is our political editor John Hess with his view of

:04:59. > :05:01.Budget Day. Yes, it was a widely leaked budget.

:05:02. > :05:05.If you've just got in, here are the main points:

:05:05. > :05:08.The Chancellor cut the top rate of income tax from 50p in the pound to

:05:08. > :05:11.45p. And he has raised the threshold at which people start

:05:11. > :05:16.paying tax to more than 9,200. There is an immediate rise in stamp

:05:16. > :05:21.duty. It is now 7 % on homes costing more than 2 million.

:05:21. > :05:24.Smokers will be hit hard by an increased tax on tobacco. It means

:05:24. > :05:30.a packet of 20 cigarettes will now cost an extra 37p.

:05:31. > :05:34.And a pint of beer is to go up by 5p a pint. Business leaders have

:05:34. > :05:40.been calling on the Government to put pressure on the banks to lend

:05:40. > :05:42.more. Today, one bank manager from Leicester decided to find out for

:05:42. > :05:48.herself about the problems facing small businesses. She went to work

:05:48. > :05:53.at a hairdressers, as Helen Astle reports.

:05:53. > :05:59.Jenny is the manager of this hairdresser in Leicester. Today it

:05:59. > :06:04.is a busy salon and many customers are expected. But business has been

:06:04. > :06:09.tough recently. There has been a struggle. The client tell you would

:06:09. > :06:13.have expected to carry on having colours and treatments have not

:06:13. > :06:21.been having them. They are coming to get their hair cut but they are

:06:21. > :06:28.not getting the extras, so you tend to lose a little bit. As well as

:06:28. > :06:33.the clients, Jenny has a new recruit. Just for today, she has

:06:34. > :06:41.the business manager of her local Nat West Bank. It is interesting to

:06:41. > :06:51.see what she does on a day-to-day basis and I cannot wait for her to

:06:51. > :06:51.

:06:51. > :06:56.shampoo someone's hair. This is a chance for her the baker to see how

:06:56. > :07:02.different -- the Bangor to see how different it is. I can see that

:07:02. > :07:08.Jenny is a very busy and time is precious for her at it is odd about

:07:08. > :07:12.making sure customers get the right service. I hope that she will get a

:07:12. > :07:20.better understanding and I hope to get to know her more and hopefully

:07:20. > :07:24.she will look at the salon and see that we are trying really hard.

:07:24. > :07:34.the Chancellor unveiled his Budget today, Jenny is hoping that her

:07:34. > :07:34.

:07:34. > :07:39.Salam will keep growing. -- that her salon will keep going.

:07:39. > :07:41.-- growing. So what has been the reaction to

:07:41. > :07:43.the Budget? There was much talk from the

:07:43. > :07:46.Chancellor's about more help for manufacturing, especially aerospace

:07:46. > :07:48.and pharmaceutics. Both important sectors in the East Midlands. And

:07:48. > :07:53.there's help too for the small businesses. The Chancellor is

:07:53. > :07:59.talking about creating jobs. talked about reducing unemployment.

:07:59. > :08:03.Men and women who run businesses create jobs. Anything that is being

:08:03. > :08:06.done to help small businesses has to be welcomed.

:08:06. > :08:13.The Chancellor had good news for the video games industry, didn't

:08:13. > :08:19.he? Yes, and remember that Derby and Nottingham are thriving centres

:08:19. > :08:22.for this industry. Both Nottingham City Council and the Nottingham

:08:22. > :08:29.East MP Chris Leslie have called for more support for companies like

:08:29. > :08:37.Crytek in Nottingham which develops video games. Its managing director

:08:37. > :08:41.today welcomed the Chancellor's decision to introduce tax breaks.

:08:41. > :08:46.Tax breaks for the video games industry is great news for us. We

:08:46. > :08:51.have suffered from unfair competition from places like Canada

:08:51. > :08:54.where there have been generous tax breaks for development. This gives

:08:54. > :08:57.us a chance to re- invest in this industry.

:08:57. > :09:03.Political reaction? Sherwood's Conservative MP Mark Spencer was

:09:03. > :09:05.smiling tonight. He says it's a budget to get Britain moving again.

:09:05. > :09:08.As for Labour, Leiceseter South's Jon Ashworth says there are many

:09:08. > :09:16.stealth taxes in this Budget that'll hit pensioners and the

:09:16. > :09:21.squeezed middle. We will hear more about the squeeze Middle in weeks

:09:21. > :09:24.to come. I bet we will! Still to come:

:09:24. > :09:32.The sport, including all the goals from Elland Road. And Sara has the

:09:32. > :09:36.weather. It has been another lovely day across the East Midlands. It is

:09:36. > :09:40.turning a little bit chilly under the clearer skies but tomorrow will

:09:40. > :09:47.bring even warmer temperatures. More towards the end of the

:09:47. > :09:50.programme. An antiques expert has described

:09:50. > :09:53.how he was held at knifepoint in his home during an attempted

:09:53. > :09:59.robbery. James Cartland, from Ashbourne in Derbyshire, believes

:09:59. > :10:02.he was targeted after he was featured in a TV documentary. The

:10:02. > :10:12.raiders fled empty-handed after he managed to escape. He's been

:10:12. > :10:14.

:10:14. > :10:18.telling our reporter how the events unfolded. There was a man suddenly

:10:18. > :10:23.leapt out leaving a big screwdriver and he was swearing at me and

:10:23. > :10:30.telling me to get down on the ground. Then at two others came in

:10:30. > :10:37.through the dining room window. He marched me up here and tied my arms

:10:37. > :10:47.behind my back and tied me to the column. He went away after about 40

:10:47. > :10:47.

:10:47. > :10:54.minutes. I was able to wriggle myself free. You expect to lock

:10:54. > :10:59.your front door and not worry about someone waving a knife at you. I am

:10:59. > :11:04.absolutely sure that it is through a programme I did in my no -- old

:11:04. > :11:09.home that was on a television programme last year, of various

:11:09. > :11:13.things that he said suggested that they had watched the programme.

:11:13. > :11:19.James does not think anything is missing. Several items were

:11:19. > :11:24.recovered from the garden. He is now having extra security fencing

:11:24. > :11:34.installed. I am determined that we should catch these people and that

:11:34. > :11:35.

:11:35. > :11:44.is why I have offered 80,000 reward to words catching the. --

:11:44. > :11:49.offered a 2,000 reward for catching them. This is not the

:11:49. > :11:52.first time they have been involved in something like this. Anyone who

:11:53. > :11:57.has any information about the robbery that happen on Saturday

:11:57. > :12:00.night is asked to contact Derbyshire police.

:12:00. > :12:03.A skier from Leicester who died after crashing into a machine that

:12:03. > :12:07.makes snow has been named. 22-year- old Thomas Lynch was working as a

:12:07. > :12:10.rep on the French resort of Val d'Isere. He was skiing with

:12:10. > :12:13.colleagues on a day off when the accident happened. The company he

:12:13. > :12:22.worked for says it's making arrangements for his family to fly

:12:22. > :12:24.to France. Two men have been jailed for

:12:24. > :12:29.plotting to smuggle nearly 24 million counterfeit cigarettes into

:12:29. > :12:31.the country. Undercover investigators watched as more than

:12:32. > :12:34.5 million fakes were delivered to an industrial unit in Leicester.

:12:34. > :12:37.Andreas Apostolides and Costas Georgiou were each sentenced to

:12:37. > :12:42.five years in prison after being found guilty of conspiracy to evade

:12:42. > :12:44.duty worth nearly 4 million. 40 jobs have been created as part

:12:44. > :12:46.of construction work on Nottingham's two new tramlines.

:12:46. > :12:49.Work has already begun on the multi-million pound project to

:12:49. > :12:52.build tramlines to Clifton and Chilwell. Now 40 new labouring jobs

:12:52. > :13:02.are being advertised. The new routes should open by the end of

:13:02. > :13:05.

:13:06. > :13:09.2014. He was just a baby when his mother

:13:09. > :13:16.was killed and he was shot by gunmen hunting for bush meat in

:13:17. > :13:21.Cameroon. With shotgun pellets left in his arm Shufai's pain continued,

:13:21. > :13:31.until now. Yes, eight years on, and Shufai is fighting fit thanks to

:13:31. > :13:36.the work of three vets from the East Midlands.

:13:36. > :13:40.This is a Shufai. He lives in a century in Cameron where he has

:13:40. > :13:45.been ever since he was rescued as a baby. He suffered severe injuries

:13:45. > :13:53.to his arm in the first few months of his life. He was clinging on to

:13:53. > :13:57.his mother when Hunter has opened fire. His movement had become

:13:57. > :14:01.limited and tell a charity got involved and brought in specialists

:14:01. > :14:07.from the East Midlands. Last November they said they had

:14:07. > :14:11.something for me to look at. They said they had a little gorilla. We

:14:11. > :14:17.spent the next few months trying to get a team of good surgeons to,

:14:17. > :14:25.work in the forest. There was still an uncertainty until Shufai was on

:14:25. > :14:30.the operating table. We had a variety of plants that we might use

:14:30. > :14:39.end we decided that we would go with the simplest option. A piece

:14:39. > :14:48.of bone was removed to stop the problem getting worse. Now A is

:14:48. > :14:54.getting better at getting lots of attention from his keeper. -- now A.

:14:54. > :14:58.-- are now Shufai is getting better at getting lots of attention from

:14:58. > :15:01.his keeper. Joining us in the studio now is

:15:01. > :15:03.Sharon Redrobe from Twycross Zoo who you saw in that report and

:15:03. > :15:06.Sandra Corr from the Pride Veterinary Centre in Derby and

:15:06. > :15:10.University of Nottingham. First of all have you ever been asked to do

:15:10. > :15:12.something like this before and how does is differ from say treating a

:15:12. > :15:15.domestic animal? It has been my career to work with these animals

:15:16. > :15:25.and I have been privileged to go to Africa. I love being able to help

:15:26. > :15:30.

:15:30. > :15:37.out. He looks so human. You are the expert surgeon! I am much more used

:15:37. > :15:44.to dealing with cats and dogs. I spoke with lots of human surgeons

:15:44. > :15:54.who helped us come up with ideas. Gorillas are not as obedient as

:15:54. > :16:04.some teenage boys! May be! They have a different skin structure

:16:04. > :16:06.

:16:06. > :16:12.that people do. How is he doing now? Is he doing OK? So far he

:16:12. > :16:18.seems to be. The surgery seems to have taken away a lot of the pain.

:16:18. > :16:22.We took out some knuckle Rock, which was quite scary. But he seems

:16:22. > :16:28.to be more comfortable. conditions over there must be quite

:16:28. > :16:32.challenging. Very different than what we are used to. It is hot and

:16:32. > :16:38.very humid. There are infects flying around. You have to be

:16:38. > :16:44.careful. Do they have the facilities there? We had to take

:16:44. > :16:48.everything with us, times two. When I asked Sondra if she would come to

:16:48. > :16:52.Africa she said yes but that we needed to sterilise everything at

:16:52. > :16:59.bring this and this because we would have nothing. She had to

:16:59. > :17:03.break two of everything. shooting -- she had to bring in two

:17:03. > :17:09.of everything. The shooting happened eight years ago. Is there

:17:09. > :17:16.still a problem with poachers? There are still babies being

:17:16. > :17:20.brought in to several charities. I did some X rays last February and

:17:20. > :17:24.there was another baby chimp brought in. Every time we have

:17:24. > :17:30.another baby brought in it means a family has been killed so they can

:17:30. > :17:36.take the baby. They are taking it for the meat, or is it something

:17:37. > :17:42.else? It is high-value meet. It is an international trade. There is

:17:42. > :17:51.some local consumption. Mostly, the gorilla meat will travel throughout

:17:51. > :17:58.Africa, and even into Europe. has to be an awareness. Yes,

:17:58. > :18:05.clearly. They are going extinct. People think they are not part of

:18:05. > :18:09.the crisis. But these guerrillas are fast going extinct. In 50 years

:18:10. > :18:17.there may not be any more in the wild, so we have to stop cutting

:18:17. > :18:21.down their forest and taking their would. We have to start looking

:18:21. > :18:30.after the animals over their. Fascinating account. Thank you both

:18:30. > :18:35.so much work coming in. Time for the sport.

:18:35. > :18:38.So, quite a night up in Leeds last night Colin. Well I hope you're in

:18:38. > :18:40.the mood for some goals because we've got a real feast for you.

:18:40. > :18:44.Nottingham Forest had an unbelievable win away at Leeds last

:18:44. > :18:54.night in a ten goal thriller. The Reds scored a magnificent seven to

:18:54. > :18:59.

:18:59. > :19:05.This game had all of the ingredients of a Hollywood

:19:05. > :19:13.blockbuster. It was not a happy beginning for Forest. A penalty was

:19:13. > :19:18.conceded after just five minutes. Just a couple of minutes later,

:19:18. > :19:28.there was the perfect way to make amends. A spectacular 25 yard shot

:19:28. > :19:29.

:19:29. > :19:34.put the Reds back in the game. At half-time there was a 21 lead and

:19:34. > :19:43.as the second half started, no one could know what was to come. Forest

:19:43. > :19:50.took a 3 - 1 lead. A minute later, Leeds took one back. Another two

:19:50. > :19:58.minutes later, it was all square. It was head in hands time for the

:19:58. > :20:06.travelling fans. Seconds later, Forest was leading with the 4th

:20:06. > :20:13.goal of the night. They never looked back. Gareth McCleary went

:20:13. > :20:20.for a hat-trick. But he and Forest were not done yet. He grabbed

:20:20. > :20:24.himself yet another goal. Amazing stuff. He then came many lives and

:20:24. > :20:32.No. 7, as Dexter Black's dark racked up an incredible light for

:20:32. > :20:41.the Reds. They will not be forgetting that for a while. It is

:20:41. > :20:43.an unbelievable night at Elland Road. Yes, unbelievable. Forest's

:20:43. > :20:53.next opponents are Brighton on Saturday. But last night Derby

:20:53. > :20:55.

:20:55. > :21:05.headed down there to play the promotion-chasing team. They came

:21:05. > :21:08.

:21:08. > :21:14.back with a 2 - 0l defeat. Collins was high. -- 82 in - nil defeat.

:21:14. > :21:18.Confidence was high. Derby did create half chances through the

:21:18. > :21:28.game. But they cannot find a cutting edge. As well as Brighton

:21:28. > :21:37.played, they were rarely threatened. They had to keep Derby firmly mid-

:21:37. > :21:40.table. More goals now in League One where Notts County found themselves

:21:40. > :21:48.4-nil down at half-time at home to Sheffield United. They ended up

:21:48. > :21:53.losing 5-2. Mark Shardlow reports. The topsy-turvy world of Notts

:21:54. > :21:58.County, who were reeling in the first half. Just 10 days ago they

:21:58. > :22:04.had a lead against league leaders Charlton. Last night was very

:22:04. > :22:08.different. Sheffield United are now second in the league. They went

:22:08. > :22:14.into the break with a full goal advantage. At least Notts County

:22:14. > :22:22.one of the second half. This free kick was pinpoint. Another error

:22:22. > :22:30.gave Sheffield a boost just before the end. But this one brought the

:22:30. > :22:40.score line to 5 - 2 in the closing moments. Not a great moment. The

:22:40. > :22:44.

:22:44. > :22:47.result sees Notts County slip out of the play-offs positions. And not

:22:47. > :22:54.to be outdone there were seven goals in the first half in the game

:22:54. > :22:58.between Alfreton and Mansfield in the Conference. Mansfield led 4 - 3,

:22:58. > :23:05.and in a quieter second half made the final score 6 - 3. So, what can

:23:05. > :23:08.Leicester do tonight! They're playing up at Blackpool. We'll have

:23:08. > :23:11.the goals here tomorrow night and there's commentary tonight on BBC

:23:11. > :23:17.Radio Leicester 104.9 FM, plus of course you can catch the result in

:23:17. > :23:21.our late news. Now, it's been a very noisy day in one part of the

:23:21. > :23:25.East Midlands. Nearly 1,000 children have been involved in the

:23:25. > :23:28.first ever Winter School Games. The event in Derbyshire paves the way

:23:29. > :23:38.for a summer of school sport linked to 2012. Helen Barnes has been to

:23:39. > :23:43.

:23:43. > :23:52.Moorways in Derby to investigate. These are some of the fastest

:23:52. > :23:58.runner as a Derbyshire! I am really proud of myself. Just like at the

:23:58. > :24:06.Olympics, there is lots of sport as well as lots of student volunteers

:24:06. > :24:13.and organisers. This is part of a legacy programmes -- programme for

:24:13. > :24:18.the Olympics and Paralympic Games. It is getting so difficult to have

:24:18. > :24:27.these competitions and it is really important in developing an interest

:24:27. > :24:31.in sport. It is important in this country. The organisers in

:24:31. > :24:37.Derbyshire are looking to find stars of the future, and also get

:24:37. > :24:42.more young people taking part and succeeding in sport. We have got

:24:42. > :24:46.over 700 people taking part in their peer group and it is a

:24:46. > :24:50.fantastic experience for them to come and compete and experience

:24:51. > :24:56.many sporting events. It is not just one event. There are five

:24:56. > :25:02.different sports. Less than half of these kids regularly take part in

:25:02. > :25:05.sport, but it is hoped that these events will change this. The best

:25:05. > :25:10.athletes will be hoping for medals and others will look to use their

:25:10. > :25:20.skills in volunteering, appreciating or even reporting.

:25:20. > :25:25.They hope to carry their skills on with them. We said it was noisy and

:25:25. > :25:30.we were not wrong. It looked fun though. I understand you have a

:25:44. > :25:52.exercises. -- I thought he might be doing squirrel exercises. It has

:25:52. > :25:56.been a lovely day today. Clear skies tonight, but it is still

:25:56. > :26:01.giving us an opportunity to see a slight frost at this time of year.

:26:01. > :26:07.It will be quite chilly and we could see some mist developing in

:26:07. > :26:11.some areas. The minimum temperature will be around three Celsius. A

:26:18. > :26:22.sunshine around. -- to tomorrow. If you were thinking of heading to the

:26:22. > :26:29.Lincolnshire coast line, look at the difference am temperatures. We

:26:29. > :26:36.will see quite low cloud remain the as well. We could easily see a

:26:36. > :26:41.daytime temperature of 60 degrees Celsius. The wind continues to come

:26:41. > :26:48.from a south-easterly direction and we have a weather front pushing him

:26:48. > :26:54.from Friday. There could be a small amount of rain on Friday. The cloud

:26:54. > :27:01.could then thinned and break again. Daytime temperatures will be about

:27:02. > :27:06.14 Celsius on Friday. Low-pressure is not very far away. We will start

:27:06. > :27:14.to see a bit more clout coming in for the weekend. It will have an

:27:21. > :27:28.Saturday and Sunday will probably be in the region of about 10 to 12
