:00:07. > :00:13.It is East Midlands Today. Our top storey, a plan that's

:00:13. > :00:18.sister act. Kalvenders life was saved by Shino,

:00:18. > :00:23.his kidney donor sibling. She has given me the gift of life,

:00:23. > :00:28.I am indebted to her for forever. He said, what are you crying for? I

:00:28. > :00:33.am fine. All guns blazing. We need the

:00:33. > :00:36.soldier who led his men out of a Taliban ambush. -- we met the

:00:36. > :00:41.soldier. From Derbyshire to Tokyo, how the

:00:41. > :00:45.Japanese people have helped to save an East Midlands band.

:00:45. > :00:51.And they are off, miles of smiles as Sport Relief raises thousands

:00:51. > :01:01.for charity. People feel better by giving. It is

:01:01. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:13.Good evening, welcome to Monday's programme.

:01:13. > :01:17.She summed it up with just a two words, job done. But for Shino Kaur

:01:17. > :01:21.Mold, the task of the -- donating one of her kidneys to her brother

:01:22. > :01:26.has meant months of tests, and it has been an emotional journey.

:01:26. > :01:31.Tonight, her brother, Kalvender, is doing well, five days after his

:01:31. > :01:38.transplant. We will hear from him later, but first, we report from

:01:38. > :01:43.Leeds, where his donor sister has been talking about the family's joy.

:01:43. > :01:47.They always say it is better to give than to receive. Right now for

:01:47. > :01:51.Shino, the joy of giving a kidney to her brother is elation. For

:01:51. > :01:56.years, it was a present he would not accept.

:01:56. > :02:01.I had been saying to him, let me be tested. And he would not let me be

:02:01. > :02:07.tested. Kalvender had waited for years, he

:02:07. > :02:15.could have died waiting. Last September will at home, and I

:02:15. > :02:21.said it again. And he agreed to it. He had been ill in March, he did

:02:21. > :02:24.have a bad period in March. It basking in the sunshine, she has

:02:24. > :02:30.a glow of satisfaction. With the support of her husband, in the run-

:02:30. > :02:35.up to her 50th birthday, she knows she has done something big and bold.

:02:35. > :02:42.I like to fix things and make them work it I can, and we just could

:02:42. > :02:49.not live with ourselves knowing that I could have held my brother.

:02:49. > :02:54.-- helped my brother. I could never have looked at him if I was dead.

:02:54. > :03:03.We have a big celebration? Yes, we are planning a trip to my

:03:03. > :03:09.yorker for the whole family, 15 of us going. -- my yorker.

:03:09. > :03:16.The care she got was first class. I am really over the moon she is back

:03:16. > :03:20.safely, and I am over the moon that Kalvender is recovering.

:03:20. > :03:28.For Shino, it really is a job done. Her brother is making good progress

:03:28. > :03:33.as he recovers. Kalvender and his wife are planning

:03:33. > :03:38.for the future. The past five years on dialysis have been tougher.

:03:38. > :03:47.It literally takes over your life. You forget what it is like to be

:03:47. > :03:51.normal, but now I will get stronger. For his wife, life has changed

:03:52. > :03:57.dramatically. Before he could not do anything. He

:03:57. > :04:02.would just lie on the sofa with the paper, or watch the TV. He was

:04:02. > :04:08.getting worse every single day, and now, hopefully, even now he is

:04:08. > :04:12.talking about. So hopefully he will be able to go out in the garden or

:04:12. > :04:15.go round the block to the pub or something.

:04:15. > :04:21.Kalvender hopes to go home at the end of the week. The bond with his

:04:21. > :04:25.sister is tighter than ever. It is a bit of -- a bit emotional,

:04:25. > :04:29.because she has saved my life and given me the gift of life, and I am

:04:29. > :04:35.indebted to her forever. In it was it for her generosity and kindness,

:04:35. > :04:39.I would still be on dialysis and a struggling day-by-day. It means

:04:39. > :04:42.everything. I will have a normal lifestyle and be able to do things

:04:42. > :04:47.with my children there and watch them grow old, have grandchildren

:04:47. > :04:52.and things. It is fantastic. It is just because she has volunteered to

:04:52. > :04:57.donate one of her organs, and she does not have to do that, it is her

:04:57. > :05:04.choice. I cannot say thank you enough.

:05:04. > :05:07.Still to come, spring lambs and sunshine, he is very cloud on the

:05:07. > :05:11.horizon? The lambing season is in full seat

:05:11. > :05:19.-- full swing, but sheep farmers are worried that a new virus

:05:19. > :05:23.spreading through their newborns. A man from Nottingham has been

:05:23. > :05:28.killed in an avalanche in Canada while skiing off-piste in the Rocky

:05:28. > :05:32.Mountains. Ryan Keene was described by friends as one of life's good

:05:32. > :05:37.people. 30-year-old Ryan Keene was

:05:37. > :05:40.described by those who knew him as an incredible person, who was

:05:40. > :05:44.exciting to be around and an inspiration to work with. Based in

:05:44. > :05:48.London, where he worked for a digital marketing company, he was

:05:48. > :05:54.brought up in West Bridgford and went to Loughborough University. On

:05:54. > :05:58.Wednesday, he and three more skiers went skiing in the Canadian Rockies.

:05:58. > :06:02.They were dropped off by helicopter in a remote area in British

:06:02. > :06:07.Columbia. They had completed the run, and were waiting to be picked

:06:07. > :06:12.up by helicopter when an avalanche was triggered from above them. They

:06:12. > :06:17.were told to run, but four were buried. Brian and a 30-year-old

:06:17. > :06:21.American woman were killed. It is believed he was hit by a tree. --

:06:21. > :06:30.Ryan Keene. An investigation is being carried out by the British

:06:30. > :06:34.Columbia coroner service. A Nottinghamshire soldier is being

:06:34. > :06:40.praised for leading his men out of an ambush in Afghanistan. Captain

:06:40. > :06:43.Ben James, who is 31, had been leading a patrol to meet local

:06:43. > :06:48.civilians in Lashkar Gah last June, when the group was suddenly

:06:48. > :06:52.attacked. Ben led his team to cover, and then into way 400 metre charge

:06:52. > :06:56.directly at the enemy. Captain James Serbs in the Fourth Battalion,

:06:56. > :07:02.The Royal Regiment of Scotland, had has been mentioned in despatches,

:07:02. > :07:06.the armed forces oldest form of recognition for gallantry. He

:07:06. > :07:11.joined us in the studio a little earlier.

:07:11. > :07:16.It is a bit embarrassing and very humbling. It is nice to be

:07:16. > :07:21.recognised. It is a shame that you cannot give an award to your entire

:07:21. > :07:26.platoon, because they were there with May and they inspire me, but

:07:26. > :07:30.it just happened that on this day, I was honoured.

:07:30. > :07:34.Tell us about that day, because it was an ambush.

:07:35. > :07:40.Yes, we were ambushed on foot patrol just east of Lashkar Gah in

:07:40. > :07:47.Helmand province. We called it a complex ambush, prix machine guns

:07:48. > :07:53.firing at us -- very machine guns, and very little cover, so we had to

:07:53. > :07:57.do something. So to turn this attack on us into their withdrawal,

:07:57. > :08:02.we had to go forward and attack them.

:08:02. > :08:07.The insurgents, I assume, would not have been expecting that?

:08:07. > :08:10.No, and that is the whole point. You have a short space of time,

:08:10. > :08:14.because they are bringing their grounds to bear on to you, and

:08:14. > :08:20.getting their distances right and stuff, they were about 400 metres

:08:20. > :08:25.away. You have got to do something, and so why did.

:08:25. > :08:30.And it worked, and you have been recognised. Is it good to be home?

:08:30. > :08:33.Yes, it is great to be back in such nice weather.

:08:33. > :08:39.We hear a lot about the dangers present in Helmand province, do you

:08:39. > :08:43.think things are getting better? Absolutely, I really do. The year

:08:43. > :08:48.before our tour, there were a lot of incidents, there worry lot when

:08:48. > :08:53.we were there, but approximately a 60% reduction, and we handed over

:08:53. > :08:57.Lashkar Gah to the Afghan security forces, and they are more than

:08:57. > :09:01.capable of looking after it in their way.

:09:01. > :09:04.Do you think you will be going back?

:09:04. > :09:10.I personally probably will be, but in a staff officer role, sitting

:09:10. > :09:13.behind a desk. My platoon will be going back next year.

:09:13. > :09:16.What to do your family think of your heroism, I know you're

:09:16. > :09:20.embarrassed by that phrase, but what your mum and dad prefer that

:09:20. > :09:25.you were not? My mum and dad supports me

:09:25. > :09:28.everything I do, but the key thing is that it is good to be back, and

:09:28. > :09:32.I am really pleased that all my soldiers came back, that is the

:09:32. > :09:35.real prize. It is an honour to meet you. Thank

:09:35. > :09:40.you for coming in. You are watching East Midlands

:09:40. > :09:42.Today on the BBC. An independent report has found that

:09:42. > :09:46.Nottinghamshire Police could not have done any more to prevent the

:09:46. > :09:52.murder of a woman last year. Denise Skilbeck from Newark was killed by

:09:52. > :09:54.her partner, Gary Spalding, who is serving a minimum of 20 years in

:09:54. > :10:00.prison. The Independent Police Complaints Commission found she

:10:00. > :10:04.contacted the police nine times between 2008 and 2011. The IPCC

:10:04. > :10:08.said the calls answered calls for assistance and did what they could

:10:09. > :10:13.to help fund. Some fares on a Nottingham tram

:10:13. > :10:17.will increase from the middle of next month. An adult day ticket

:10:17. > :10:23.goes up from 3.20 to three pounds 50, while an off-peak single ticket

:10:23. > :10:28.rises by 20p, and a season ticket at goes up as well. Some other

:10:28. > :10:31.fares will stay the same. Tramlink Nottingham says the rises are due

:10:31. > :10:35.to the increasing costs of running the service.

:10:35. > :10:40.A business that has made it where in Derbyshire for more than 200

:10:40. > :10:44.years is now making its name in the most unlikely of locations.

:10:44. > :10:48.John Smedley, which is based in the Lea Mills, is enjoying huge success

:10:48. > :10:55.in Japan. Their business in the forest has help them to survive the

:10:55. > :10:59.recession here. Kylie Pentelow reports from Derbyshire and Tokyo.

:10:59. > :11:05.It is all made in a quainter location in the East Midlands. But

:11:05. > :11:10.now a quarter of John Smedley's worldwide business is far, far away

:11:10. > :11:13.in the forest. It is here that John Smedley has

:11:13. > :11:18.vowed it second home. Nestle between some of the top brands in

:11:18. > :11:26.the world, the knitwear company that still made by Derbyshire hands.

:11:26. > :11:29.-- that is still made. Why has it been a success?

:11:29. > :11:33.Japanese people understand it is traditional, and they understand

:11:33. > :11:39.the items. When many have moved their

:11:39. > :11:43.production to the forest, John Smedley has been in this factory

:11:43. > :11:49.since 1784. Some things have barely changed. Over those 200 years,

:11:49. > :11:53.business has been up and down. The family, who still run it, say it is

:11:53. > :11:57.the overseas market that has got them through the recent recession.

:11:57. > :12:01.I believe one of our success factors in been here so long is

:12:01. > :12:05.because our sales are spread through over 30 or 40 markets

:12:05. > :12:09.around the world, so sometimes you find some markets are up and other

:12:09. > :12:13.markets are down, but overall, when things are bad, you can see

:12:13. > :12:18.yourself through. Now the historic company is making

:12:18. > :12:26.big strides in the forest, adapting its products and making specific

:12:26. > :12:35.net where just for Japan. There is still pretty good run for

:12:35. > :12:42.growth, that is why we are sending staff to England to study how the

:12:42. > :12:48.John Smedley brand is in England. Tomorrow, we will be finding out

:12:48. > :12:53.how one other East Midlands band is making it big in Japan. And just

:12:53. > :12:58.why the Japanese love wearing English.

:12:58. > :13:07.It looks nice and it is more fashionable.

:13:08. > :13:14.I would like to get to this Sunday. Thank you!

:13:14. > :13:17.Amazing collection of styles. In case you had not noticed, spring

:13:18. > :13:21.has well and truly sprung, and the lamb insist -- lambing season is

:13:21. > :13:26.away. These are anxious times for some of

:13:26. > :13:30.our farmers, with cases of a Biro has been reported round the UK,

:13:30. > :13:40.including Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

:13:40. > :13:40.

:13:40. > :13:45.We are going to Derbyshire to find I will be here, where it is lambing

:13:45. > :13:49.time. Last year they had record births. I have been told to expect

:13:49. > :13:54.to get stuck in and get my hands dirty.

:13:54. > :13:57.I will be working with bill, the countryside manager. How is it

:13:57. > :14:03.going? Its is going well. This is the

:14:03. > :14:09.first time we have let this lot out. They are enjoying the sunshine. In

:14:09. > :14:14.terms of problems, certainly no weather related problems. They have

:14:14. > :14:17.all been lying happily about. recent discovery of the

:14:17. > :14:22.Schmallenberg virus in the East Midlands has understandably caused

:14:22. > :14:26.worry for sheep and cattle farmers. We may be at the beginning of an

:14:26. > :14:31.outbreak with this. We are not sure because the biggest problem is that

:14:31. > :14:40.we don't know it is there in the animals.

:14:40. > :14:44.This one up here - she is wandering off on her own. Is that a problem?

:14:45. > :14:49.She keeps giving a little call, talking to her lamb. She is

:14:49. > :14:55.wandering off. It is unusual for the sheep to go away from the main

:14:55. > :14:58.flock. She is looking about her. She is not comfortable. She is

:14:58. > :15:08.looking for somewhere to go and have her lambs.

:15:08. > :15:09.

:15:09. > :15:19.Finally it was time to get my hands Get the other one if you like. She

:15:19. > :15:29.

:15:29. > :15:35.Come on, girl. All these people to look at. There we go.

:15:35. > :15:40.Well, it has been a busy day on the farm here. Lots of jobs for me to

:15:41. > :15:50.get stuck into. I will bring you the latest update on these gorgeous

:15:51. > :15:53.

:15:53. > :15:57.A bit of bonding going on! Are unfeasibly cute. Beautiful weather

:15:57. > :16:03.for lambing. But for how much longer? And that is down by the

:16:03. > :16:08.trend to tell us more. -- and now.

:16:08. > :16:18.We can expect the good weather for a few more days. More details a

:16:18. > :16:23.

:16:23. > :16:26.Did she say how high? It is going to get hotter. Has the Sun been

:16:26. > :16:31.shining on the sport? It has. I was out on Saturday and

:16:31. > :16:34.it was sunshine all round. Another fine performance from Forest coming

:16:34. > :16:39.up and a win for the Leicester Tigers. But first, Leicester City

:16:39. > :16:49.and Derby, who are now five points from the play-off places. They

:16:49. > :16:51.

:16:51. > :17:01.posted good wins, and there were They had only played for six

:17:01. > :17:05.

:17:05. > :17:15.minutes when Steve Davis potted the second goal, after half an hour,

:17:15. > :17:15.

:17:16. > :17:20.came when the Crystal Palace keeper was -- keeper's punch was returned.

:17:20. > :17:25.Then came a mix up. The goalkeeper picked up the ball straight from

:17:25. > :17:31.his own player. It was a rush of blood to the head which left Chris

:17:31. > :17:35.Martin to score the quickest free- kick ever. They pulled one back

:17:35. > :17:45.kick ever. They pulled one back later on, but Derby County's fourth

:17:45. > :17:50.

:17:50. > :17:54.win in March to see them up to 12. around. Nigel Pearson did not look

:17:54. > :18:03.happy but he cheered up when they equalised with a shot from distance.

:18:03. > :18:11.If that was good, it was 2-0 a few minutes later with this spectacular

:18:11. > :18:14.effort. They made it difficult for themselves after this red card. But

:18:14. > :18:24.the fox is deserved all three points. They rode their luck at one

:18:24. > :18:29.end and could have added to the As for Forest, they put in a second

:18:29. > :18:32.superb performance in a few days at home to Brighton. As I found out,

:18:32. > :18:35.the spring seems to have brought out the best in the Reds, and their

:18:35. > :18:40.fans. Before the game, they were basking

:18:40. > :18:46.in sunshine, basking in the moment of fame wonderful midweek mauling

:18:46. > :18:56.of Leeds. How many was it? It was seven! So good they had to write

:18:56. > :18:58.the word on the video Printer. Can they do it all again? The

:18:58. > :19:01.Can they do it all again? The answer was that the result was not

:19:01. > :19:06.the same but the performance was still brilliant. The fans roared

:19:06. > :19:13.their team on, and the players responded in fine fashion. They

:19:13. > :19:16.outplayed Brighton. Even when the visitors snatched a rare

:19:16. > :19:18.opportunity, it did not matter. The fans picked themselves up, and so

:19:18. > :19:21.fans picked themselves up, and so did the players.

:19:21. > :19:24.The fans were fantastic today. They The fans were fantastic today. They

:19:24. > :19:34.got us the result in the end, if I am honest.

:19:34. > :19:36.

:19:36. > :19:40.This is how they went about it. Pressure, pressure, pressure,

:19:40. > :19:44.forcing Brighton into fouls and eventually a sending-off. Lifted

:19:44. > :19:49.for one final effort, they gave the for one final effort, they gave the

:19:49. > :19:53.fans their just reward. A great performance, the best I

:19:53. > :19:58.have seen all season. Really determined. It is not often that

:19:58. > :20:04.Forest score at the end. We are a match for anybody now. We have

:20:04. > :20:10.proven that. There's also a team spirit being created. The fans can

:20:10. > :20:15.see that. The fans today were tremendous.

:20:15. > :20:22.Notts County are still a point of the play-offs after a 0-0 draw at

:20:22. > :20:26.Scunthorpe. The home side's keeper Sam Slocombe kept everything out.

:20:26. > :20:31.Alastair was a point after the defeat to the two Sheffield clubs.

:20:31. > :20:35.But Keith Curle says it is the kind of game they have to win.

:20:35. > :20:38.Leicester Tigers' remark or second half to the season continues. They

:20:38. > :20:44.are to third in the Premiership after beating London Irish. But

:20:44. > :20:54.they could face a spell without Ben Youngs, who may be out injured for

:20:54. > :20:56.

:20:56. > :21:03.Floods got the first of Leicester's four tries, along with three

:21:03. > :21:10.conversions and three penalties. Leicester lead from their rivals

:21:10. > :21:16.not Bunton into third place. Tigers are just two points ahead, but

:21:16. > :21:21.Irish could not take advantage. Ben Youngs was injured towards the end,

:21:21. > :21:28.but he could miss some crucial matches if he is cited by the

:21:28. > :21:32.authorities after an incident Maybe they were treated as just

:21:32. > :21:36.rugby! Nottingham Rugby have it all on to reach the play-off semi-

:21:36. > :21:41.finals after going down to Bristol the estate, but they are losing a

:21:41. > :21:45.bonus point from the match and that could be vital.

:21:45. > :21:53.Nottingham Panthers' quarter-final opponents will be the Braehead clan.

:21:53. > :21:57.The away leg a rise quickly, tomorrow, in fact. Nottingham are

:21:57. > :22:02.there for the return next week. In cricket, Samit Patel has made an

:22:02. > :22:05.impressive start on his debut for England in Sri Lanka. The

:22:05. > :22:11.Nottinghamshire all-rounder took his first two test wickets to

:22:11. > :22:17.justify his selection, with Stuart Broad taking one. Sri Lanka closed

:22:17. > :22:27.at 289 for eight. Jayawardene is the man they want to get tomorrow.

:22:27. > :22:30.Before I go, a mention of late kick-off this evening. We will have

:22:30. > :22:40.reports from all of our clubs across the East Midlands. Make sure

:22:40. > :22:40.

:22:40. > :22:45.you tune in for that. If it is too late, you can always recorded. --

:22:45. > :22:51.record it. I was wondering about Leicester

:22:51. > :22:55.versus Forest. You all know that thousands of people raised money

:22:55. > :23:00.for charity yesterday by taking part in the Sport Relief Mile. You

:23:00. > :23:04.might just remember last week we saw Tom Ray, there hears, in

:23:05. > :23:08.training. He is a quadruple amputee because of meningitis. He was

:23:08. > :23:12.determined to give something back, and yesterday he successfully

:23:13. > :23:18.completed his mile and raised 1,600 for charity.

:23:18. > :23:22.Well done, Tom. Miles were run across the region. In Nottingham,

:23:22. > :23:27.some famous faces even took part. Here is a look back at some of the

:23:27. > :23:35.events. I am not massive refit, but

:23:35. > :23:42.everybody can try and do their bit. -- massively fit. The amount of

:23:42. > :23:47.money raised, a little bit can go a long way. We are raising money for

:23:47. > :23:52.everybody. That is why everybody should get behind it, get on the

:23:52. > :24:02.website and do something for it. I'm going to go on my scooter. I am

:24:02. > :24:12.not cheating. Yes, I am. At my age I can run as they want. -- as I

:24:12. > :24:21.

:24:21. > :24:31.It is for the children who are not as fortunate as ours. I saw John

:24:31. > :25:13.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:25:13. > :25:20.Bishop, and I thought if he could Thank you so much for all your

:25:20. > :25:23.pictures. A brilliant weekend. Hopefully not just the running, but

:25:23. > :25:27.also the weather. Anna is down by also the weather. Anna is down by

:25:27. > :25:31.the river. I certainly am. It is beautiful

:25:31. > :25:35.down here, and the weather will stay dry, settled and very warm for

:25:35. > :25:41.at least the next couple of days. High pressure will continue to

:25:41. > :25:47.dominate. It is not all good news. I will reservoirs are in need of

:25:47. > :25:52.rain. The early assessment shows that much of the UK only had 25% of

:25:52. > :25:56.its average rain. Here, we have had a lack in the past couple of weeks

:25:56. > :26:02.so we could be down on the average. With that in mind, I had a chat

:26:02. > :26:06.with Severn Trent earlier. Still no restrictions in place. Our water is

:26:06. > :26:09.pressures. Back to this stunning weather. Everybody has been out

:26:09. > :26:14.enjoying it. But we are still in March and at this time of the year,

:26:14. > :26:17.clear skies at night mean it is going to be very chilly. The

:26:17. > :26:22.temperatures are already starting to drop out of the sunshine.

:26:22. > :26:28.Firstly, however, everybody enjoyed the weather at the weekend. This

:26:28. > :26:36.butterfly was spotted in Derbyshire. If you had any photos for us, e-

:26:36. > :26:40.mail them. Why are we getting the settle whether? It is down to high

:26:40. > :26:44.pressure. It is sitting there in the North Sea. It dominates over

:26:44. > :26:50.the next couple of days, keeping the Atlantic fronts at bay. It will

:26:50. > :26:54.be dry and warm. This evening we have got clear skies. As soon as it

:26:54. > :26:59.gets dark, the temperatures will drop. It is expected to be chilly

:26:59. > :27:06.tonight. You may notice some mist and fog in places. A low

:27:06. > :27:11.temperature tonight - two Celsius. Tomorrow, again, a chilly start,

:27:11. > :27:18.like today, but then clear blue skies. Sunshine and very warm

:27:18. > :27:22.tomorrow. We could reach a high of 20 Celsius. A quick look at the

:27:22. > :27:25.outlook - staying warm on Wednesday, but by the end of the week the

:27:25. > :27:28.temperatures are coming down. But it is still above average for March.

:27:28. > :27:32.it is still above average for March. All I can say is, get out and enjoy

:27:32. > :27:36.the weather! Thank you. It was weird, there was
