:00:07. > :00:10.This is East Midlands today with Anne Davies and me Dominic Heale.
:00:10. > :00:13.Tonight, a Bollywood superstar brings part of Leicester to a
:00:13. > :00:23.standstill. Hundreds turn out to meet India's first Miss Universe
:00:23. > :00:29.here to talk about diabetes. Also tonight, without a mate for life,
:00:29. > :00:33.of violence that has left five swans dead. What I think about the
:00:33. > :00:39.person who has done this cannot be repeated on-camera. It is really
:00:39. > :00:46.said. Why mechanics are now offering to engraver your car's
:00:46. > :00:55.catalytic converter. Some interesting themes at this dressing,
:00:55. > :00:59.the RAF, the Titanic, and even the gruffalo.
:00:59. > :01:04.Good evening, and welcome to Thursday's programme. First tonight,
:01:04. > :01:07.Bollywood glamour came to Leicester this evening. Hundreds of people
:01:07. > :01:11.turned out to see the actress Sushmita Sen who was in Leicester
:01:11. > :01:14.to raise awareness of diabetes. A lot of people suffer from the
:01:14. > :01:18.condition in the city and it could be that thousands more remain
:01:18. > :01:23.undiagnosed. The concern is that not everyone is getting the checks
:01:23. > :01:26.they need to prevent serious complications.
:01:26. > :01:36.Let's go live now to our reporter Rob Sissons who's been with the
:01:36. > :01:36.
:01:36. > :01:40.crowds this afternoon. It be an incredible afternoon
:01:40. > :01:47.herein Leicester. You would not believe how many people turned out
:01:47. > :01:51.there. These were the scenes a few hours ago, they turned out in
:01:51. > :01:58.strength to see the former Miss Universe, and Bollywood actress,
:01:58. > :02:04.they have made it across town, some very heavy traffic, to publicise
:02:04. > :02:09.diabetes. There are problems with diabetes in Leicester? There are
:02:09. > :02:13.problems, people haven't been tested, not been diagnosed. They
:02:13. > :02:19.continue with their lifestyle, which means they will die younger
:02:19. > :02:24.as a result. The presence of Sir Sushmita Sen here, not only adds a
:02:24. > :02:31.bit of glamour, but reminds people about the necessity to go out and
:02:31. > :02:37.be tested. She has closed the roads here. The eyes of the world were on
:02:37. > :02:42.you in Leicester, it was incredible? An electrifying. We
:02:42. > :02:48.were expecting a lot of wonderful people. Diabetes is something you
:02:48. > :02:52.care about, you have it in your family? It is more than that.
:02:52. > :03:02.People need to be aware, it is something that is affecting many

:03:08. > :03:18.Lots of people haven't been tested? I was not aware until I had some
:03:18. > :03:25.blood taken, that news was given to me, I had diabetes. She had a test
:03:25. > :03:32.today, she is in perfect health. Tomorrow, people should go to their
:03:32. > :03:40.GP, and asked to be tested. I got to know that there are 850,000
:03:40. > :03:47.people who have not been tested. Did your grandmother had it?
:03:47. > :03:53.maternal grandmother. Do you worry that it is genetic? Whether it is
:03:53. > :04:03.genetic or not, it doesn't matter. As a former Miss Universe, you have
:04:03. > :04:06.
:04:06. > :04:14.to we healthy? -- you have to eat healthy. Of course. Beth still be
:04:14. > :04:24.tested. -- but you still have to be tested. You have brought Bollywood

:04:27. > :04:32.to Leicester? We are looking to raise money and awareness, it is an
:04:32. > :04:41.important message. This is a publicity stunt, dear think the
:04:41. > :04:49.message gets lost? It is not the -- it is not a publicity stunt.
:04:49. > :04:57.Publicity is important. It may not be a stunt. It is important. It is
:04:57. > :05:02.not just the message. It is collecting of the funds. Great to

:14:19. > :14:23.A report has warned that the East Midlands is only building half the

:14:55. > :15:01.165,000, more than eight times higher than the average wage of
:15:01. > :15:04.20,000. With us now is Chris Hobson from
:15:04. > :15:08.the National had been fed up -- National Housing Federation. The
:15:08. > :15:14.figures are pretty stark. What are the consequences if we continue and
:15:14. > :15:18.do not build enough houses? They are pretty bad. We saw some
:15:18. > :15:22.statistics there into homelessness and overcrowding. There is a
:15:22. > :15:25.massive mismatch between supply and demand, and it will put a pressure
:15:25. > :15:30.on prices and means that the average home is going further away
:15:30. > :15:33.from the average person. What is the answer? The building
:15:33. > :15:36.industry is in recession. I am sure they would like to build more. It
:15:37. > :15:41.is more difficult to raise a mortgage.
:15:41. > :15:44.Investing in new homes is exactly that, investing. You are giving
:15:44. > :15:48.money to the economy and creating jobs and supporting local
:15:48. > :15:52.businesses and local enterprise. It is not necessarily throwing money
:15:52. > :15:56.away at all, it is about keeping money going and building homes
:15:56. > :16:00.people need to live in. A the other problem is where to
:16:00. > :16:04.build them. If you start using greenfield site, people get upset
:16:04. > :16:08.about it. A lot of people recognise the need
:16:08. > :16:12.for new homes, although they are maybe less vocal. They need
:16:12. > :16:16.somewhere for their children to live and they want to support local
:16:16. > :16:20.businesses. Also, there are many sites that can be built on that are
:16:20. > :16:25.less than contentious, old hospital sites for example. So there are
:16:25. > :16:29.many options are there. In terms of demographics, we have a
:16:30. > :16:34.changing population, a huge boom in the number of elderly people is
:16:34. > :16:38.predicted. Does that change the way be look at housing and houses?
:16:38. > :16:41.It is important that local authorities recognise that the
:16:41. > :16:48.housing need will be different in the future and that homes are built
:16:48. > :16:52.to meet those needs. Sounds like it is a complicated and

:17:29. > :17:33.diagnosing a head injury. It is up for a prestigious award.
:17:33. > :17:37.At the scene of emergency, it is vital for a doctor to assess
:17:37. > :17:42.straightaway whether their patient has a brain injury, but it is
:17:42. > :17:45.something really difficult to act - - accurately diagnose. Doctors have
:17:45. > :17:49.to rely on shining a light into the eye of their patient to see how
:17:49. > :17:54.their pupils react to light. The problem is that that is just
:17:54. > :17:58.guesswork, and that is where this New Invention comes in. This is a
:17:58. > :18:02.telescope which gives a digital measurement of the size of the
:18:02. > :18:06.people and dilation. That means doctors have a more accurate way of
:18:06. > :18:11.diagnosing head injuries. It removes the subjectivity, so it
:18:11. > :18:15.means it is rather like using a digital thermometer. There is now a
:18:15. > :18:19.measurement that they can track, and with any head injury, you are
:18:19. > :18:23.looking to prevent potential brain injury, so the faster you can
:18:23. > :18:29.diagnose that patient, the better it is for the patient, and you are

:18:38. > :18:41.health world, where innovative new products are on show. These kind of
:18:41. > :18:45.inventions will make it real difference to patient care in the
:18:45. > :18:50.future. You can see things that will really
:18:50. > :18:57.change lives. I think also, the other thing is it will bring growth
:18:57. > :19:01.and jobs to this area, and give people a much better and quicker
:19:01. > :19:05.experience of illness, and we all want that to be as painless as
