:00:17. > :00:21.Good evening and welcome to a special East Midlands Today. The

:00:21. > :00:31.Olympic torch has travelled through our region and it has taken to the

:00:31. > :00:39.

:00:39. > :00:44.air. We will have a bird's-eye view A very warm welcome to the

:00:44. > :00:50.programme and a welcome to the historic cathedral quarter in Derby.

:00:50. > :00:54.It dates back in parts to the 16th century. I'm sure a piece of

:00:54. > :01:01.history will be made here. Thousands of people have been

:01:01. > :01:11.lining the streets. Here are some of them. The son has just come out.

:01:11. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:55.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:01:55. > :02:00.Let's have a look at the flavour of Many more great images like that to

:02:00. > :02:07.come. At the moment, we are playing a waiting game - waiting for the

:02:07. > :02:13.torch bearers to arrive in our part of Derby. Where are they? We might

:02:13. > :02:20.be able to let you know. Some whack up there is a helicopter with Simon

:02:20. > :02:28.on board. -- somewhere. Where is the torch? I cannot see it. We are

:02:28. > :02:38.hovering about 1000 ft above fugue in the marketplace. We have seen

:02:38. > :02:38.

:02:38. > :02:43.crowds all the way along. It sets off from Mark Eaton Park. The

:02:43. > :02:52.crowds are definitely forming. Derby is looking lovely in the

:02:52. > :02:56.sunshine and very green tonight from up here. Every day this torch

:02:56. > :03:02.relay is different from the rest. The big thing that makes Derbyshire

:03:02. > :03:06.so very special is the landscape - the countryside. I am sure we will

:03:06. > :03:13.find the images of Derbyshire are really what made the torch relay

:03:13. > :03:22.event so very special. It started off at Nottingham Castle. It has

:03:22. > :03:30.gone through Derbyshire on Day 422. Robb has been following the flame.

:03:30. > :03:36.-- 42. Today the torch was king of the castle. The starting point next

:03:37. > :03:43.to Robin head. There is always time for a quick kiss and then it is off

:03:43. > :03:49.into student land. These front row seats cost nothing. The atmosphere

:03:49. > :03:59.it is amazing. Lots of people ice - - I spoke to do not have tickets

:03:59. > :03:59.

:03:59. > :04:09.for the Olympics but want to feel part of it. Now then, now then, at

:04:09. > :04:11.

:04:11. > :04:19.now Ben! -- then. From Nottingham, it is Derby. You probably would not

:04:19. > :04:25.want a taxi to take you this way. It is 112 miles. Loads of Union

:04:25. > :04:35.Jacks. It was fabulous. Then the home of Lord Byron. A wonder what

:04:35. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:46.he would have thought - poetry in motion! -- I wonder. I think you'll

:04:46. > :04:52.find you are not part of the official torch security. From the

:04:52. > :04:57.famous crooked spire in Chesterfield, on to our most famous

:04:57. > :05:04.stately home. There was only one thing were chatting about - the

:05:04. > :05:12.torch. Perhaps best not to do this with it. Surely a high point of the

:05:12. > :05:19.day. But then it was uphill through Bakewell to our highest town -

:05:20. > :05:24.Buxton. All the earth that the athletes have put into this. -- the

:05:24. > :05:32.effort. They call this the they wait to Dove Dale - Ashbourne. Here

:05:32. > :05:40.they entered into the Olympic spirit. There is only 28 days to go.

:05:40. > :05:47.Can you believe it? Some amazing pictures. As I predicted, some

:05:47. > :05:53.wonderful landscape shops -- shots from Derbyshire. So many amazing

:05:53. > :05:57.stories about the torch bearers. Today was a moment for a 16-year-

:05:57. > :06:03.old girl from Derbyshire to really shine. She got to the top of her

:06:03. > :06:09.sport despite having cystic fibrosis. Today have family shared

:06:09. > :06:15.her big moment but they had to be on her toes as well. That is not

:06:16. > :06:25.the torch-bearer on the run, that is her dad. 15-year-old Katie was

:06:26. > :06:26.

:06:26. > :06:31.sent, her family and friends, were not sure where to start. It is

:06:31. > :06:38.amazing. No wonder the brass band was in fine form. Hundreds of

:06:38. > :06:43.people lined the route. Kids from a school down the road. Above, a

:06:43. > :06:50.bird's-eye view. Others wrapped up nice and warm from the British

:06:50. > :06:57.summer. Tennis is her passion. She has become Derbyshire it's number

:06:57. > :07:03.one at under 16 Foster that is despite having cystic fibrosis. --

:07:03. > :07:11.under 16. She'd ticket at a relaxed job. Mum, dad and friends were

:07:11. > :07:20.trying to keep up. -- she took it. I did not think that many people

:07:20. > :07:26.would show up. I really enjoyed it. I had to try to run up there in my

:07:26. > :07:30.suit. I ran up as well. I did not know where he had gone. He

:07:30. > :07:38.disappeared. The shock and have face when she saw all these people.

:07:38. > :07:46.They were crowding around. -- on her face. Now Katie is taking her

:07:46. > :07:52.torch into her school and tennis centre. Here she is - the young

:07:52. > :07:57.lady of the moment. Did you see that? I was quite surprised. I did

:07:57. > :08:06.not think there was that match of May. We think you are a very

:08:06. > :08:14.special girl. -- much of me. What was it like doing the round? It was

:08:14. > :08:21.crazy. I did not think there would be that many people around. There

:08:21. > :08:27.is a man on bouncy stilts. Describe the atmosphere. On the bus I got

:08:27. > :08:35.bombarded by people. People were saying, have my child, have my

:08:35. > :08:41.child! I thought, I am going to drop the baby. People were having

:08:41. > :08:48.photos. Two of my friends were there. There were too many people.

:08:48. > :08:54.You must be very proud of Katie. Extremely proud. She is an amazing

:08:54. > :08:59.girl. So calm and collected. It is a cliche but she and young people

:08:59. > :09:04.like her are really are an example, aren't they? They are. It does not

:09:04. > :09:09.matter what is thrown at her, she will have a go. She puts great

:09:09. > :09:16.effort into whatever she does. She is a great person. It is yet

:09:16. > :09:22.another cliche but this was for you the experience of a lifetime.

:09:22. > :09:26.ever came again, I would definitely want to do it again. It was really

:09:26. > :09:34.special. Everybody - even the people on the bus - they were

:09:34. > :09:41.really nice and really helpful. Thank you for bringing the sunshine.

:09:41. > :09:45.I am confidently told the torch is heading our way. It has come from

:09:45. > :09:53.Buxton to Ashbourne this afternoon and we are hoping it is making its

:09:53. > :09:59.way down the Ashbourne Road. Sarah will tell us. The torch is coming.

:09:59. > :10:06.We know that because the convoy is here. Look who I have with me!

:10:06. > :10:15.Someone very special - pepper. How must he be feeling right now?

:10:15. > :10:24.Excited but really nervous. -- you'd be feeling. They have been

:10:24. > :10:34.waiting down now. There are so many people down there - all cheering.

:10:34. > :10:40.

:10:40. > :10:44.All your friends are here. Why were you nominated? I work for

:10:44. > :10:48.Derbyshire mental health services. I represent all the people who

:10:48. > :10:54.really go that extra mile. It is all to do with a training with

:10:54. > :11:02.Nordic walking. I'm not a natural when it comes to exercise. I

:11:03. > :11:09.discovered Nordic walking. I do it with my clients. I love it. I feel

:11:09. > :11:15.a bit lost. It is very exciting. How proud are you to carry this

:11:15. > :11:19.torch? Really proud. I never dreamt I would do something like this.

:11:19. > :11:26.When I was nominated I never thought it would come to anything.

:11:26. > :11:32.It is becoming a bit of a reality. The torch is coming, isn't it? We

:11:32. > :11:38.will lead you to it. These women work with her. Why did you nominate

:11:38. > :11:48.her? She really deserves it. She goes that extra mile. Are you

:11:48. > :11:48.

:11:48. > :11:55.excited? This is your first glimpse of the torch, isn't it? I am very

:11:55. > :11:59.excited. We are told the torch is on its way. Let's see if we can see

:11:59. > :12:04.it was up in the distance, possibly up there. I'll just grab a few

:12:04. > :12:12.words with spectators who have come out this evening. Why was it so

:12:12. > :12:21.important? It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The Jubilee,

:12:22. > :12:26.the Olympics - fantastic for our country! This is of this is

:12:26. > :12:32.something quite amazing for you. What will it mean to see the torch

:12:32. > :12:39.come right past you? -- have obviously. What do you think of the

:12:39. > :12:44.atmosphere? It is really good - amazing. Thank you very much. I

:12:44. > :12:49.hope you enjoy it. This is the convoy which is coming down the

:12:49. > :12:55.road. At some point down here, the torch is coming, we are told. The

:12:55. > :13:00.crowd is as far as the eye can see - people waving their flags -

:13:00. > :13:07.getting excited, getting in the mood for doing this. Pepper is

:13:07. > :13:13.getting ready to take a moment, which will be so exciting for her.

:13:13. > :13:21.-- a moment. Here are a lot of media vehicles and support convoys.

:13:21. > :13:28.This is the torch. It is carried by Daniel Longhurst from Derby. His

:13:28. > :13:36.passion for dance got him the nomination. He has inspired so many

:13:36. > :13:46.people. This is the kiss. A few photos get taken of this monumental

:13:46. > :13:55.

:13:55. > :14:05.Another kiss to mark the moment of the kiss and she will start her

:14:05. > :14:11.moment - taking it along Ashbourne Road. Huge cheers from the crowd.

:14:11. > :14:17.She will be giving it took Dan, one of our best Paralympic athletes.

:14:17. > :14:27.High hopes for him in the Games in the discus. Off she goes. She is

:14:27. > :14:28.

:14:28. > :14:33.heading towards you. It is on its way. Isn't that wonderful? How

:14:33. > :14:39.fantastic to see that kiss point happening live in front of our

:14:39. > :14:46.cameras! Wonderful images. It is on its way, that is the main thing.

:14:46. > :14:54.The torch relay - the torch has been carried by the wonders number

:14:54. > :14:59.of means. It has been across rivers using zip wires, on top of

:14:59. > :15:06.mountains, on a camel. Not during this particular Olympics, I must

:15:06. > :15:12.say. Something unique has happened. It has travelled by cable car as

:15:12. > :15:18.Anthony Bartram reports. The torch has been taken over the edge come

:15:18. > :15:22.up on the water. Who can forget this? After a zip wire the

:15:22. > :15:30.adrenalin rush, what you really need to do is slow down and enjoy

:15:30. > :15:36.the ride. This iconic cable-car ride up the heights of the --

:15:36. > :15:42.Abraham has seemed apt. The torch has been off-road before but never

:15:42. > :15:48.with views like this. 15-year-old gymnast Dominic Cunningham from

:15:48. > :15:52.Birmingham hopes the 2016 Olympics are on his horizon, as he climbed

:15:52. > :15:57.over the Derwent Valley. There was plenty to inspire. The warming

:15:57. > :16:02.effect of the flame has been seen and heard all along its route.

:16:02. > :16:07.were hanging out of the window with an Olympic torch. Seeing everyone

:16:07. > :16:14.on the hilltop was brilliant. primary-school were the top

:16:14. > :16:20.cheerleaders. What did you think of the torch? Brilliant! I was really

:16:20. > :16:26.excited to see it in the cable car. It was awesome. I really liked it.

:16:26. > :16:32.The fact it was maybe the last time we would see it in our country.

:16:32. > :16:42.Another happy crowd up lifted, it was soon time for the ride Down, to

:16:42. > :16:48.

:16:48. > :16:54.There is a bit of a party atmosphere building up behind me,

:16:54. > :16:58.isn't there? That is nothing compared with what will happen

:16:58. > :17:08.later. The really big party is happening not very far from here,

:17:08. > :17:13.

:17:13. > :17:18.Hello. I have got Colin Jackson with Meath was a delightful to have

:17:18. > :17:24.you with me! It is a pleasure to be here. It is the second time I have

:17:24. > :17:29.ever come to Derby. An incredible amount of people in the park, just

:17:29. > :17:36.to see something spectacular. are waiting. The flame will come

:17:36. > :17:46.here. It will go through the clouds -- crowds and light the cauldron.

:17:46. > :17:46.

:17:46. > :17:49.We reckon we may have 20,000 people here. Do join us at 7pm. We are

:17:49. > :17:54.featuring a wonderful stories of all the torch bearers today and

:17:54. > :18:02.over the next few days as the relay heads across the East Midlands.

:18:02. > :18:09.There are so many of them that they have to put three of them together.

:18:09. > :18:15.Three of our bearers and this report. Lots of students live here

:18:16. > :18:21.so where better to carry the torch and through Lenton. Rebecca is at

:18:21. > :18:26.Nottingham Trent University. It is her rise to the top of table tennis

:18:26. > :18:33.that has earned her the honour of carrying the torch. Bennett was the

:18:33. > :18:39.turn of Clary Jones to carry the flame. -- then it was. She lost her

:18:39. > :18:44.leg after a hit and run accident. She wants to set up a visit -- a

:18:44. > :18:48.business to design clothes for disabled people. This man gave both

:18:48. > :18:54.students the good news they would be running with the flame. Both

:18:54. > :19:00.girls were worried at being called to the office. It was emotional for

:19:00. > :19:08.them. It was amazing! It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Not just

:19:08. > :19:13.a kiss but a handshake for Bill Ferguson. He has had a lifetime of

:19:13. > :19:17.athletics, running for Team GB. He was the team manager in the

:19:17. > :19:23.Commonwealth Games three times. There was a hug along the way for

:19:23. > :19:33.extra support. For young and old today it was a time for them all to

:19:33. > :19:33.

:19:33. > :19:36.shine. Welcome back to the cathedral quarter. Behind me, a

:19:36. > :19:42.group of people you might not normally expect to see in the

:19:42. > :19:47.centre of Derby. A group of sailors - Sea cadets to be more precise.

:19:47. > :19:54.With them Sea Cadet leader. Welcome! I can see from where you

:19:54. > :19:59.are holding their you had your day today. Where did you do your run?

:19:59. > :20:09.It was a fantastic day for do- nothing like I was expecting.

:20:09. > :20:10.

:20:10. > :20:15.you nominated? -- a fantastic day. Nothing like I was expecting.

:20:15. > :20:22.People might think there is not a lot of sea in the East Midlands so

:20:22. > :20:26.why is that happening? We are based in Nottingham. There are loads of

:20:26. > :20:32.different training organisations throughout the UK. You ran twice

:20:32. > :20:37.today. How did that happen? I did my initial run and was asked to

:20:37. > :20:41.continue for the extra 300 metres, which I agreed to do. You can

:20:41. > :20:46.probably hear the huge amount of noise behind me. That is because

:20:46. > :20:51.the first part of the convoy has arrived in the cathedral quarter of

:20:51. > :20:57.Derby. Blue lights flashing, outriders. This is the initial part

:20:57. > :21:04.of the cavalcade. It does not mean that the torch bearer has arrived.

:21:04. > :21:10.It is the advance party. It is so exciting. It whips the crowds up

:21:10. > :21:16.into a frenzy. The torch bearer is about five minutes behind. It is

:21:16. > :21:22.good to see the advance party. Where were we? You experienced all

:21:22. > :21:26.this excitement as you were doing the round, is it overwhelming?

:21:26. > :21:34.definitely was. Seeing the crowds lining the streets and cheering

:21:34. > :21:41.your name was unbelievable. You are famous! 15 minutes of fame has been

:21:41. > :21:47.fantastic. Thank you very much. Are you allowed to keep the torch?

:21:47. > :21:52.indeed. Everyone will want to see it. It has been such a fabulous day.

:21:52. > :22:02.We have been asking you to send in your pictures. Here is the

:22:02. > :22:02.

:22:02. > :23:00.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:23:00. > :23:07.Wow! The noisiest corporate truck you have ever seen or heard his

:23:07. > :23:13.passing by. You went away for a while. The torch is about five

:23:13. > :23:20.minutes away. It will be here soon. There is another big story today

:23:20. > :23:27.and that is the weather. This is considerably better than yesterday.

:23:27. > :23:34.We had golf-ball sized hail stones or tennis ball sized! They were the

:23:34. > :23:38.size of golf balls. For the whole of June, it fell within one hour

:23:38. > :23:48.yesterday across the East Midlands. It is not confirmed but a possible

:23:48. > :23:49.

:23:49. > :23:54.tornado as well. That did cause some damage. Geoff spent the day

:23:54. > :23:59.patching up his damaged Conservatory in Burbage. It bore

:23:59. > :24:07.the brunt of a hailstorm and shattered dozens of windscreens.

:24:07. > :24:13.You have got the best part of 3,000 to get a new roof on S.

:24:13. > :24:19.looked and sounded like a tropical storm. This is mobile-phone footage.

:24:19. > :24:25.The wind has picked up. The trees in the background. Things are

:24:25. > :24:32.flying around - big items. Things are getting drawn out of the house.

:24:32. > :24:37.A tree has fallen on top of a car down the road. This is when a

:24:37. > :24:43.whirlwind happened. Tiles were whipped of the rooms and flung into

:24:43. > :24:50.gardens. This gadget was blown apart by the storm. The roof has

:24:50. > :24:55.gone. -- the garage. It is all still there but it is very wet.

:24:55. > :25:00.When the rain and hail finally stopped, some streets in Leicester

:25:00. > :25:05.and Loughborough were turned into rivers. They had a third of a

:25:05. > :25:12.month's rain fought in a few hours. It is not what to expect in summer,

:25:12. > :25:21.is it? -- rainfall. Back in Burbidge, Geoff and his neighbours

:25:21. > :25:27.of counting the cost of a storm that no one is likely to be get. --

:25:27. > :25:33.forget. We have had some wind here. I have not been able to do her

:25:33. > :25:39.thing with my hair. Much better than yesterday. -- a thing. A

:25:39. > :25:49.continually improving picture? Still the chance of a few showers

:25:49. > :25:50.

:25:50. > :25:55.As the showers start to die away throughout the evening, we will see

:25:55. > :26:00.their cloud increasing from the south-west and rain will move up

:26:00. > :26:04.from the south-west was dug once that rain clears, through the

:26:04. > :26:09.morning, we will get a bit of respite from the rain but showers

:26:09. > :26:16.will soon develops throughout tomorrow. A few of the showers will

:26:16. > :26:20.become heavy. The chance of thunder into the afternoon. Not as bad as

:26:20. > :26:26.yesterday. They will move through quite quickly on the strength of

:26:26. > :26:30.the wind. On Sunday, we do start to see the ridge of high pressure

:26:30. > :26:36.building up from the south. That should start to kill off some of

:26:36. > :26:40.the showers that are likely on Sunday. Sunday should be the drier

:26:40. > :26:47.day. It will be quite breezy. We should get away with missing out on

:26:47. > :26:55.a few of the shires as well. The wind is certainly gusting in the

:26:55. > :27:03.centre of Derby. It has gone up or cloudy again. A bit hit and mess

:27:03. > :27:13.with regard to showers. We're waiting for the torch to come.

:27:13. > :27:16.

:27:16. > :27:21.Tomorrow it leaves Derby for Birmingham and the West Midlands

:27:21. > :27:24.better returns to a region on Monday. Starting off in Coventry,

:27:24. > :27:26.Northampton, Kettering and Corby before making its way to Market
