:01:04. > :01:06.trolleys are found and taken back to Good evening and welcome to

:01:06. > :01:08.Tuesday's programme. First tonight, solicitors, barristers and QCs

:01:09. > :01:11.demonstrated outside one of the region's biggest courts today

:01:11. > :01:14.against controversial plans to change the legal aid system.

:01:14. > :01:17.The Government wants to save 200 million but its critics say those

:01:17. > :01:21.cuts could jeopardise the right to a fair trial. In a moment, we'll hear

:01:21. > :01:24.the views of the former Solicitor General, but first here's Rebecca

:01:24. > :01:30.Sheeran. They are normally inside the courts

:01:30. > :01:38.but today they were protesting against proposed cuts to legal aid.

:01:38. > :01:45.We work hard to protect people when they find themselves in situations

:01:45. > :01:51.they did not expect to. We have done our bit for austerity. We have not

:01:51. > :01:56.had a pay rise since 1997. These cut will result in miscarriages of

:01:56. > :02:03.justice. Fewer but bigger organisations will provide legal

:02:03. > :02:08.aid. This man needed legal aid and says if it was not for the choice of

:02:08. > :02:12.solicitor he believes he could have been sent to prison. It could have

:02:12. > :02:18.been a major factor. If people are allocated, barristers and

:02:18. > :02:23.solicitors, though my not have their interests at heart -- they may not

:02:23. > :02:30.have. It could have a massive effect. They were also protesting

:02:30. > :02:40.about the rates they would be paid. How much do barristers earn? 65% of

:02:40. > :02:40.

:02:40. > :02:45.criminal barristers earn less than 50,000 a year. That is equivalent

:02:45. > :02:50.of an experienced teacher and very close to the salary of a London

:02:50. > :02:54.underground driver. In a statement, the Justice Secretary said, we have

:02:54. > :02:57.one of the most expensive legal aid systems in the world with about 1

:02:57. > :03:02.billion a year spent on criminal legal aid. These changes are about

:03:02. > :03:06.getting the best value for the taxpayer and will not in any way

:03:06. > :03:14.affect someone's right way the trial. Today these protesters hope

:03:14. > :03:17.he will change his mind. Earlier I spoke to the Harborough MP

:03:17. > :03:19.and former Solicitor General Sir Edward Garnier. He met the Justice

:03:19. > :03:25.Secretary last night. I asked him if Chris Grayling was prepared to

:03:25. > :03:30.budge. He is waiting to receive the answers to the government

:03:30. > :03:36.consultation but what he does have to deal with is the oddments bending

:03:36. > :03:44.problems. One way or the other, he has got to find 220 million of

:03:44. > :03:49.savings -- he has to deal with the spending problems. You have said the

:03:49. > :03:55.legal aid system should not be immune to cuts in the past. Have you

:03:55. > :03:59.changed your view? No, it is not immune to cuts but that does not

:03:59. > :04:03.mean doing anything, it means doing what is sensible. It is very

:04:03. > :04:09.delicate. It requires people of skill, people of professional

:04:09. > :04:13.integrity to perform the task of defending and prosecuting in

:04:13. > :04:20.criminal cases. But it also requires sufficient resources to enable

:04:20. > :04:24.professionals to do the job. Do you have reservations? I do at the

:04:24. > :04:29.minute. I might have to change my mind when is Grayling comes up with

:04:29. > :04:36.the responses to the consultation. What are the reservations?

:04:36. > :04:43.concern is that good and practitioners will no longer be able

:04:43. > :04:47.to afford to do the work. They are not being paid huge sums of money

:04:47. > :04:52.like commercial barristers. If they leave the profession, we will not

:04:52. > :04:58.get the young bright people moving on to become QCs and doing the more

:04:58. > :05:05.complex cases and then we will not get the judges who grow out of the

:05:05. > :05:12.QCs to try the complex criminal cases. I think it does matter.

:05:12. > :05:17.are people going to go to get legal aid bearing in mind the number of

:05:17. > :05:20.firm available will be reduced? the plans go through as currently

:05:20. > :05:24.advertised, there will be a reduction in the number of

:05:24. > :05:30.practitioners, as individual barristers or as legal aid

:05:30. > :05:35.solicitors firms, if you are in market harbour and you are arrested,

:05:35. > :05:42.you will have to go to Birmingham, you may have to go to London to find

:05:42. > :05:49.a lawyer to represent you. Justice must be accessible, not just to the

:05:49. > :05:53.prosecution, but also to the defence. Thank you.

:05:53. > :05:57.Sport is coming up later in the programme with plenty of intrigue.

:05:57. > :06:04.We've been at Trent Bridge where the big question is, could Broad be back

:06:05. > :06:07.as England prepare to save pride against New Zealand?

:06:07. > :06:10.Next tonight, people living in the Leicestershire village of

:06:10. > :06:13.Queniborough have spent the day cleaning up after a water main burst

:06:13. > :06:16.and flooded their homes. The force was so great it created a huge hole

:06:16. > :06:22.in Main Street. Severn Trent worked through the

:06:22. > :06:25.night to plug the leak and repair the damaged street. The company has

:06:25. > :06:32.apologised to villagers for the mess and inconvenience, as Jonathan Cecil

:06:32. > :06:37.reports. 80 years old and 15 inches wide,

:06:37. > :06:42.this is the pipe from which 100 cubic metres of water burst out,

:06:42. > :06:47.flooding Queniborough. At 4pm, enough water to fill a swimming pool

:06:47. > :06:56.escaped, buckling the road, pouring into homes and side streets. There

:06:56. > :07:03.was quite a massive explosion type, muffled explosion. He rode lifted

:07:03. > :07:11.two feet and out came gushing water -- the road. It was flowing like a

:07:11. > :07:14.river. From our control centre, we knew we had pressure drops in this

:07:14. > :07:23.area immediately. He calls men started to come through. We

:07:23. > :07:31.responded from our depot in Leicester and it took us in -- it

:07:31. > :07:35.took us about an hour to get here. It is thought seeing as though -- it

:07:35. > :07:39.is thought seasonal ground movement is responsible. Homeowners need to

:07:39. > :07:45.decide whether to claim of their own insurers or from Severn Trent

:07:45. > :07:50.themselves. Either way the water company will pay the policy excess.

:07:50. > :07:54.The owners of this house have packed up and moved out. Their home is

:07:54. > :08:00.uninhabitable. It has been highly inconvenient. We understand that and

:08:00. > :08:05.we would like to apologise. It is estimated damage to the water pipes

:08:05. > :08:15.and the road will cost 20,000 to repair but a final figure to restore

:08:15. > :08:16.

:08:16. > :08:19.people's homes is still not known. The leader of UKIP in Lincolnshire

:08:19. > :08:22.says he's to stand down as East Midlands chairman of the party while

:08:22. > :08:24.the police investigate racists comments posted on Facebook. Chris

:08:24. > :08:27.Pain told members of UKIP's National Executive Committee yesterday that

:08:27. > :08:29.his account was hacked. UKIP has issued a statement saying that it's

:08:29. > :08:39.suspended judgement on the allegations until the conclusion of

:08:39. > :08:42.a separate investigation by Lincolnshire Police.

:08:42. > :08:45.A seventh person has been arrested in connection with a shooting at a

:08:45. > :08:48.pub in Nottingham. A 22-year-old woman was seriously injured after a

:08:48. > :08:51.gun was fired into the garden of the Vernon Pub in Old Basford last

:08:51. > :08:53.August. A 28-year-old man has been questioned on suspicion of

:08:53. > :08:59.conspiracy to murder. Six others have already been arrested and

:08:59. > :09:03.bailed in connection with the incident.

:09:03. > :09:07.Nottingham's new tram works are going on apace. But they've left a

:09:07. > :09:11.group of pensioners feeling like they're trapped in their homes.

:09:12. > :09:15.Why? Well, those living at the Lark Hill village in Clifton say doors

:09:15. > :09:25.and windows have been coated in a red dust from the construction site

:09:25. > :09:25.

:09:25. > :09:31.next door. Geeta Pendse reports. It is like a fog that comes over.

:09:31. > :09:36.For the last two months, this flat has been covered in red dust.

:09:36. > :09:41.Overlooking a construction site, Chris new work would take place but

:09:41. > :09:45.she says the sheer volume of the dust has been shocking. With an

:09:45. > :09:54.existing breathing problem, she feels trapped inside. I have to be

:09:54. > :10:00.so careful. It is awful. My bedroom window is there. I cannot open it at

:10:00. > :10:06.night. I am frightened of breathing the dusting. She is among several

:10:06. > :10:09.residents who have complained about problems since work began. It came

:10:09. > :10:15.in everywhere, open windows, under the doors, through the vents, in the

:10:15. > :10:22.car park, everywhere. It looked like the Australian outback. It was that

:10:22. > :10:32.red. With weather like it at the moment, open windows, the dust has

:10:32. > :10:32.

:10:32. > :10:36.gone into the homes, extra cleaning. The contractor says they have put

:10:36. > :10:40.measures in place to minimise the dust and inconvenience. Here they

:10:40. > :10:45.have a water browser and they have lined the side of the construction

:10:45. > :10:50.site with a netting that is designed to trap the dust. The contractor

:10:50. > :10:54.also says they are working with the home to listen to residents

:10:54. > :11:04.concerned. Many welcome the chance to have a tram network nearby, but

:11:04. > :11:07.at the moment they say it is coming at a cost.

:11:07. > :11:09.As you'll have heard, a special service was held at Westminster

:11:09. > :11:11.Abbey today to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen's

:11:11. > :11:13.coronation. Among the invited guests were two

:11:13. > :11:16.young cadets from Welbeck Defence College at Woodhouse in

:11:16. > :11:26.Leicestershire. They've just got back from London and are with Jo

:11:26. > :11:26.

:11:26. > :11:32.Healey. Hello. Welbeck Defence College is

:11:32. > :11:39.celebrating its 60th birthday. It was founded in 1953 which is why two

:11:39. > :11:44.of its cadets were invited down to today's ceremony. Jess and Georgia,

:11:44. > :11:48.how come you are the lucky ones? is was around the time of exam

:11:48. > :11:55.preparations so our names were put into a hat and our names were drawn

:11:55. > :11:59.out. How thrilled where you? It was fantastic to know we would be

:11:59. > :12:06.spending the day in the presence of the Royal family and lots of amazing

:12:06. > :12:12.people. You were preparing last night. We did spend quite a few

:12:12. > :12:16.hours polishing our shoes. But macro describe it for me. It was quite

:12:16. > :12:22.overwhelming, entering the Abbey and seeing the colours and the people.

:12:22. > :12:25.It was quite spectacular. An honour to be there. I have never been

:12:25. > :12:32.inside Westminster Abbey before and it was quite a spectacular place.

:12:32. > :12:36.What was the highlight? When the quiet started because the trumpets

:12:36. > :12:40.were amazing and the sound went right through you. A lot of people

:12:40. > :12:45.were there from the armed forces and some of them were at the original

:12:45. > :12:50.coronation. How did that make you feel apart from very young? It made

:12:50. > :12:56.me feel privileged and it was an honour to represent the young. We

:12:56. > :12:59.are potential officers in the armed services. It was pretty spectacular.

:13:00. > :13:03.It made you quite aware of your generation but it was fantastic to

:13:03. > :13:09.share it with people who had seen it in the first place. It was an honour

:13:09. > :13:15.to be there. After a momentous day, Welbeck Defence College is a sixth

:13:15. > :13:22.form college, so now they really need to get back and cracked on

:13:22. > :13:27.revising for their A-levels. Thank you, girls.

:13:27. > :13:32.Did you hear any of the service? I heard it was fantastic.

:13:32. > :13:37.Next tonight, there is no doubt they are an eyesore, discarded shopping

:13:37. > :13:42.trolleys dumped on waste ground and in waterways. It is a problem that

:13:42. > :13:51.could be solved. By using smartphone technology, a Derbyshire company is

:13:51. > :13:54.out to trap them down. -- track them down. Not only will it clear up the

:13:54. > :13:58.countryside, it will make it green as well.

:13:58. > :14:04.Shopping trolleys that have been dubbed after being used. 400,000 of

:14:04. > :14:07.them go missing in the UK every year. But now everyone who owns a

:14:07. > :14:15.smartphone has the power to get them cleared away. You simply download a

:14:15. > :14:20.free trolley app and then use it to take a photo of the errant trolley.

:14:20. > :14:27.That marks its location using GPS technology and within 24-hour

:14:27. > :14:31.someone takes it away. 47 teams of trolley trackers are on call to

:14:31. > :14:35.collect them. If they are in good condition, most will go back to the

:14:35. > :14:41.supermarket where they came from. Any which are in need of repair are

:14:41. > :14:44.brought to this facility in Derbyshire. It is a great

:14:44. > :14:50.opportunity for the British public to get involved and I would really

:14:50. > :14:56.like to encourage everybody to get out there, download the app, help us

:14:56. > :14:59.locate those trolleys and get them back where they need to be. That

:14:59. > :15:04.image of the shopping trolley sticking out of the canal or

:15:04. > :15:09.hedgerow, that should be a thing of the past? Like you say, it is a big

:15:09. > :15:14.problem and we have got to tackle it as best we can. For every trolley

:15:14. > :15:17.that is traced, a donation will be made to a charity that plants trees

:15:17. > :15:23.in cities, helping to turn an environmental eyesore into a green

:15:23. > :15:28.benefit. Meanwhile, the recovered trolleys that are in need of TLC

:15:28. > :15:36.will be getting their own makeover here. This is trolley heaven. Is

:15:36. > :15:42.this the trolley capital of Britain? It is the trolley capital of the

:15:42. > :15:49.world! Things you don't know! The trolley

:15:49. > :15:55.capital of the world! Talking of clever gadgets, a student

:15:55. > :16:04.may have found a way to make roadsigns more eye-catching and less

:16:04. > :16:09.cluttered and confusing. A student from Nottingham Trent University has

:16:09. > :16:18.got a patent for holographic roadsigns.

:16:18. > :16:25.Charlie Gale had his Eureka moment about holographic roadsigns.

:16:25. > :16:30.I saw a lenticular poster of children moving and I thought why is

:16:30. > :16:35.that not used for roadsigns? It pulses as drivers approach. Charlie

:16:35. > :16:45.hopes it will change Britain's road signage, which has been criticised

:16:45. > :16:51.for being confusing. It conveys the information in a much clearer way.

:16:51. > :16:53.This will just bring roadsigns up-to-date. Charlie has ordered

:16:53. > :16:56.spoken to the Department for Transport about his sides and is

:16:57. > :17:04.confident we will see them on the roads. After he graduates he is off

:17:05. > :17:11.to work for another company famous for innovation, the vacuum and a

:17:11. > :17:21.factor Dyson. Hospitals in ligature that are being

:17:21. > :17:23.

:17:23. > :17:29.investigated for hi-def rates are -- he death rates are to get more

:17:29. > :17:36.staff. There will be more ward sisters spinning their time on the

:17:36. > :17:42.supervisory role. More efforts are being made to get

:17:42. > :17:52.children to take up swimming. It is part of the National

:17:52. > :17:52.

:17:52. > :17:57.Curriculum but some schools do not offer it.

:17:57. > :18:03.Now sport is limbering up with Stuart Broad and the boys practising

:18:03. > :18:06.at Trent Bridge in the sun. They have had beautiful blue skies

:18:06. > :18:13.and sunshine for it today. There will be more swing tomorrow as it

:18:13. > :18:19.gets cloudier and cooler as well. Jonny for the details later. -- join

:18:19. > :18:25.me for the details. It is sport in. A fabulous day for

:18:25. > :18:32.it. We have football news coming up. We're going to start out in the

:18:32. > :18:37.cricket. Stuart Broad took full part in England's training session. It

:18:37. > :18:41.looked like his knee problem was well in the past. Now it is a case

:18:41. > :18:45.of whether he will be risked in the final one-day international against

:18:45. > :18:51.New Zealand tomorrow. There is no doubt England have

:18:51. > :18:55.missed Stuart Broad. His injury was one of the barriers to success

:18:55. > :18:58.against New Zealand. On his home territory, he would love to be back.

:18:58. > :19:02.He plays good cricket here. I remember the test match here with

:19:02. > :19:05.the hat-trick. It is or is good to have that confidence and everyone

:19:05. > :19:10.has grounds that they play well at. It is that much better when it is

:19:10. > :19:20.your home ground. I am sure he will be champing at the bit to get out

:19:20. > :19:27.here. It is technically a dead rubber, as New Zealand have ordered

:19:27. > :19:30.one. They want the joy of winning. love taking wickets for New

:19:30. > :19:35.Zealand, taking them for my country. It is really enjoyable and to

:19:35. > :19:40.contribute to a win is fantastic. For Trent Bridge itself, this is

:19:40. > :19:49.more about the cricket that will go on on the field of play. This is

:19:49. > :19:57.about the ground, the city, the world, he that -- showing the world

:19:57. > :20:07.that they have the ability to win. It is vital that we take care of

:20:07. > :20:10.

:20:10. > :20:14.everything that we can for the public and the media. New Zealand

:20:14. > :20:20.are eyeing up Trent Bridge greedily. We have had some good times here.

:20:20. > :20:25.When you come to Nottingham, it is a good place to come and bat. We are

:20:25. > :20:30.all looking forward to a good opportunity of putting things right.

:20:30. > :20:38.A powerful motivator. It should be a good one. Meanwhile, the man who has

:20:38. > :20:45.led New Zealand to victory for the last two one-day internationals will

:20:45. > :20:50.not be coming here. He hit centuries last week but he has confirmed that

:20:50. > :20:54.he is joining the new verbal macro in the Caribbean. He says he hopes

:20:54. > :20:57.to play for the Derbyshire at somebody and the future. Onto the

:20:57. > :21:02.football and Nottingham Forest will be making a new signing within the

:21:02. > :21:12.14 days. It will be a new player, it won't be either West Ham teenager

:21:12. > :21:12.

:21:12. > :21:22.Robert Hall or Spanish winger David Lopez, despite reports. The two

:21:22. > :21:22.

:21:22. > :21:27.clubs are in talks about Jonny Russell.

:21:27. > :21:30.Kasper Schmeichel has says he wants to stay where he is. A big summer

:21:31. > :21:39.ahead for our Tigers outwith the Lions.

:21:39. > :21:49.The British and Irish Lions arrived yesterday. Dan Cole says they have

:21:49. > :21:49.

:21:49. > :21:52.had a warm welcome. We don't seem to be able to hear from Dan Cole there.

:21:52. > :21:56.If you want some amusement at the end of the Australians, check out

:21:56. > :22:01.their warmup game against India today. Out for 65, which is a great

:22:01. > :22:09.score on the golf course but that is the only place.

:22:09. > :22:15.Very harsh! Good luck. It has been a perfect day to get out and about

:22:15. > :22:20.with the garden in the sunshine. More of us are growing our own fruit

:22:20. > :22:30.and veg. A new project set up by BBC Radio Leicester is hoping to show us

:22:30. > :22:33.

:22:33. > :22:37.how easy it can be. Lady Damon -- Lady Aidid . This rhubarb is doing

:22:37. > :22:42.fantastically well on the primary school plot. But so are the

:22:42. > :22:46.dandelions! All of this will be transformed over the summer with

:22:46. > :22:50.what the children are growing over the road. There are only 23 children

:22:50. > :22:56.at this school and they are being encouraged and port out of garden

:22:56. > :22:59.their own fruit and veg. Is everyone ready to get growing their own? You

:23:00. > :23:03.are going to do the broad beans, you're going to get planting the

:23:03. > :23:13.sweetcorn if that is all right and, Jack, you are growing the Beanstalk.

:23:13. > :23:14.

:23:14. > :23:17.OK! It is a sore place within the Jessica teachers and students.

:23:17. > :23:21.grow your own project has been brilliant for the school. We were

:23:21. > :23:28.contacted in the BBC to get involved. They have really enjoyed

:23:28. > :23:36.the whole experience of gardening and being outside. What else have

:23:36. > :23:40.you been growing? Tomatoes, sunflowers and runner beans. I love

:23:40. > :23:50.digging holes and watering the plants. And getting how hands mucky

:23:50. > :23:54.

:23:54. > :23:58.X macro -- and getting our hands mucky! I love broccoli!You don't

:23:58. > :24:03.need a lot of space for growing. Even if you have a balcony, you can

:24:03. > :24:07.grow something like a fruit pot. This one has a daughter apple tree

:24:07. > :24:15.in it. You can grow a pasta sauce pot, which has tomatoes and herbs

:24:15. > :24:19.and even a hanging basket is ideal for cut and come again letters. We

:24:19. > :24:22.will see how things progress but in the meantime there is a lot of work

:24:22. > :24:29.to be done on this allotment. Lucky for me, I have some little helpers.

:24:30. > :24:34.Get stuck in! That is what I needed over the

:24:34. > :24:39.weekend. I was doing battle with ground elder. Terrible stuff! Never

:24:39. > :24:43.heard of it! We want to see some of your summer

:24:43. > :24:51.pictures. It has been a lovely day today and hopefully for the rest of

:24:51. > :25:01.the week. We will hear from K in a moment. Why don't you e-mail us or

:25:01. > :25:10.you can tweet as. -- or you can tweet us. Is the weather going to

:25:10. > :25:14.What a scorcher we have had today. It is all thank to this big slab of

:25:14. > :25:17.high pressure that has been settled across us for the last few days. It

:25:17. > :25:22.has been giving us that lovely sunshine and it is staying dry and

:25:22. > :25:28.settled. It is slowly on the move. It is getting a little restless. It

:25:28. > :25:33.will move northwards through tonight, allowing us to pick up a

:25:33. > :25:35.north-easterly breeze. We'll pick up a bit more cloud tomorrow. Not quite

:25:36. > :25:40.as warm or sunny for us tomorrow. There will be a bit more cloud

:25:40. > :25:45.around and those temperatures will be pegged back eight degree or two.

:25:45. > :25:48.Still not feeling too bad at all. On the sat like picture, you can see

:25:48. > :25:54.weather low cloud is, it is toppling over the high-pressure and it is

:25:54. > :25:57.starting to move in across the East Coast. A fine enter the day for most

:25:57. > :26:07.of us with a lot of sunshine to come in the next few hours will stop that

:26:07. > :26:13.cloud will spread westwards. It is a cloudy night for us. It is still a

:26:13. > :26:18.little misty and murky overnight, and temperature wise, it is quite

:26:18. > :26:21.mild, with temperatures of nine or ten. Tomorrow is a different look do

:26:21. > :26:26.things to start with. A lot of low cloud around, a little bit misty and

:26:26. > :26:30.murky. Things will slowly improve as we head into the afternoon. The

:26:30. > :26:34.cloud will break up and a lot of sunshine returns towards the end of

:26:34. > :26:42.the day and the winds will be light as well. Because of that slow start,

:26:42. > :26:44.temperatures would be quite so high. 16 or 17 degrees. Fear not, because

:26:44. > :26:49.things are warming up again towards the end of the week. This area of

:26:49. > :26:53.high pressure builds back in across us, so things settle down once again

:26:53. > :26:56.for Thursday and Friday. It stays dry with these and spas of sunshine

:26:56. > :27:01.and the temperatures are on the up. It will be a bit breezy toward the

:27:02. > :27:08.end of the week, knocking the age of the temperatures. Highs of 21
