:00:07. > :00:16.This is East Midlands Today live from the scene of a fire that in the

:00:16. > :00:24.early hours of this morning took the lives of four people — a mother and

:00:24. > :00:31.her three children. I could see people screaming and people

:00:31. > :00:37.shouting. Cooed the murder of the family be

:00:37. > :00:45.linked to the death of a man just hours earlier?

:00:45. > :00:56.Also the way of saving money on waste disposal.

:00:56. > :01:18.And a fond farewell to hundreds of soldiers deploying to Afghanistan.

:01:18. > :01:24.Good evening. Just behind me is the house that was set on fire last

:01:24. > :01:36.night claiming the lives of our mother and her three children. ——

:01:36. > :01:41.the lives of a mother. Add a man was fatally attacked in the street.

:01:41. > :01:57.Police say the incidents may be linked.

:01:57. > :02:08.A quiet, studious and devote family. They were killed when their home was

:02:08. > :02:25.engulfed in flames last night. The door was open. The staircase was on

:02:25. > :02:31.fire. They have been named locally. The husband and father of the house

:02:31. > :02:42.is understood to have been working in Ireland as a neurosurgeon.

:02:42. > :02:47.If life is lost as a result of an accident one can come to terms with

:02:47. > :02:56.it over time, but when it is deliberate, that pain is

:02:56. > :03:02.unbearable. People who knew the family well approached the media to

:03:02. > :03:09.say there was no reason why anyone would wish them harm. They were very

:03:09. > :03:16.nice lads and they do not know why anybody would do that to them. She

:03:16. > :03:25.was very calm. She was very understanding. If you had a problem

:03:25. > :03:32.and went to her she was a stress buster.

:03:32. > :03:38.This lunchtime prayers were said. The father and husband is understood

:03:39. > :03:48.to have taken part. Nearby police carry on searching for

:03:48. > :03:51.any clues. Many believe this could be a horrific case of mistaken

:03:51. > :03:56.identity. So, let's look at what happened.

:03:56. > :04:00.Leicestershire police were called to Kent Street, around a mile from

:04:00. > :04:06.here, at round 5.30 yesterday evening, where a man in his 20s was

:04:06. > :04:10.found who had been fatally wounded. Seven hours later at just after half

:04:10. > :04:14.past midnight this morning fire fighters were called here to Wood

:04:14. > :04:19.Hill where a family home was ablaze. The bodies of a mother and her three

:04:19. > :04:23.teenage children were found in the upstairs rooms. At midday today, the

:04:24. > :04:26.police held a news conference where they confirmed they were

:04:26. > :04:29.investigating the link between the murders.

:04:29. > :04:35.All day long flowers have been left at Kent Street, just half a mile

:04:35. > :04:38.from where I'm standing, and the scene where a young man was

:04:38. > :04:48.attacked. Mike O'Sullivan has spoken to a witnesses who saw the incident.

:04:48. > :04:55.The aftermath of the street attack in Leicester last night. It happened

:04:55. > :05:08.at 5:30pm. We understand that the 20—year—old man who died in hospital

:05:08. > :05:16.full stop —— who died in hospital was a football coach. One person

:05:16. > :05:29.said, he has been taken away too soon.

:05:29. > :05:36.At first I thought it was a road traffic accident. It was only when I

:05:36. > :05:41.spoke to some people around me that they said it was a stabbing and it

:05:41. > :05:46.was quite serious. At that stage the man was alive. He was drifting in

:05:46. > :05:50.and out of consciousness. The police officer was very concerned. From the

:05:50. > :05:55.expression on his boys I realised that this was a serious stabbing.

:05:55. > :06:03.The police have been at their seen all day. —— expression on his face I

:06:03. > :06:10.realised that this was a serious stabbing.

:06:10. > :06:20.Workers at a nearby funeral home gave their reaction. It is shocking

:06:20. > :06:32.to find out is an near here. —— to find out there is an murder. It is

:06:32. > :06:37.generally quiet. It is a surprise. If there is anyone who may have

:06:37. > :06:44.witnessed the assault, saw anything suspicious, or may have heard

:06:44. > :06:50.something of interest, please get in touch with the police.

:06:50. > :07:01.The police say the timing of the assault and the fire .2 links

:07:01. > :07:07.between the two occurrences. # —— suggested there are links between

:07:07. > :07:15.the two occurrences. This community is in shock. The

:07:15. > :07:23.father has lost his daughter, his two sons, and his wife. To have gone

:07:23. > :07:32.away and to do his work as a Dr and come back to find his family burned

:07:32. > :07:37.to death, is a terrible shock. It is a very close—knit community. They

:07:37. > :07:44.have one question. Why? Nobody knows the facts. The police are dealing

:07:44. > :07:53.with this superbly. People want to let them get on and do their job.

:07:53. > :07:57.People are saying could this be a revenge attack? Do you have any

:07:58. > :08:05.idea? I do not. This family went to bed. There was a terrible fire. They

:08:05. > :08:10.are now dead. Let us stick together as a community and support what the

:08:10. > :08:17.police are doing. A terribly sad day for everybody in

:08:17. > :08:22.Leicester. You will be joining us again at the end of the programme.

:08:22. > :08:27.Thanks, Anne. You're watching East Midlands Today. Still to come — a

:08:27. > :08:30.farewell parade for the families of hundreds of departing soldiers.

:08:30. > :08:33.These soldiers from the Royal Anglian Regiment's second Battalion

:08:33. > :08:40.will deploy to Afghanistan within weeks. A full report, later.

:08:40. > :08:44.An inquest's heard that a Derbyshire woman was fearful of her former

:08:44. > :08:51.partner in the week before she died. Rachel Slack, her ex—partner and

:08:51. > :08:55.their young son were all found with fatal stab—wounds at a cottage in

:08:55. > :08:59.Holbrook three years ago. At today's inquest Rachel's mother described

:08:59. > :09:06.how Andrew Cairns had spiralled downwards into mental collapse.

:09:06. > :09:18.James Roberson reports. It was at this cottage in June 2010

:09:18. > :09:26.that Rachel Slack and her former partner were both found dead with

:09:26. > :09:53.multiple stab wounds. Also found dead was her son.

:09:53. > :09:59.In 2008. Rachel Slack told —— the inquest also heard from the sister

:09:59. > :10:05.of Andrew Cairns. She said he has lived all over the

:10:05. > :10:11.world. When he moved to Derbyshire he became increasingly mentally ill.

:10:11. > :10:28.By 2010 he was living in squalid conditions refusing anybody entry.

:10:28. > :10:34.The witness spoke to Andrew. The hearing continues next week.

:10:34. > :10:40.An 85—year—old priest who's accused of 27 sexual offences against boys

:10:40. > :10:45.will go on trial in Derby next year. Francis Paul Cullen was extradited

:10:45. > :10:50.from the Spanish island of Tenerife last month. Today he appeared at

:10:50. > :10:54.Derby Crown Court via video link from Nottingham prison. He spoke

:10:54. > :10:58.only to confirm his name. He was remanded in custody and is to go on

:10:58. > :11:02.trial next March. Mr Cullen served at parishes throughout the region,

:11:02. > :11:14.including Christ the King at Mackworth in Derby.

:11:14. > :11:19.The first of 22 new trams built in Barcelona is now in Nottingham.

:11:19. > :11:23.There was a red carpet arrival for the new tram today. The Alstom

:11:23. > :11:27.Citadis vehicles will make their first appearance on Line One of the

:11:27. > :11:31.network in June next year. That's ahead of the major expansion of two

:11:31. > :11:35.new routes on the Nottingham tram network.

:11:35. > :11:38.Next tonight: People who illegally dump rubbish are costing the East

:11:38. > :11:40.Midlands hundreds of thousands of pounds every year. Councils say fly

:11:40. > :11:46.tipping is a huge problem. Nottingham City Council told us it

:11:46. > :11:50.cost them more than £600,000 in the last year. Leicester City Council

:11:51. > :11:56.say they dealt with more than 7,000 incidents at a cost of over

:11:56. > :12:00.£250,000. Moving around other parts of the region, Mansfield spent

:12:00. > :12:04.£43,000 dealing with fly tipping whereas Rutland had one of the

:12:04. > :12:09.lowest clean—up bills at around £7,000. In Newark the council says

:12:10. > :12:16.they've cleaned up over 1,100 incidents of dumping last year —

:12:16. > :12:22.forking out £56,000 to do so. I spent the morning out with their

:12:22. > :12:31.teams to see what they have to deal with.

:12:31. > :12:37.This is a routine call out. They are collecting furniture from our house

:12:37. > :12:41.in the town. It has cost the household £20 to have it collected.

:12:41. > :12:54.Their next callout is much more common. The job next is fly tipping.

:12:54. > :13:03.This is what they find. A fridge and other rubbish dumped on the side of

:13:03. > :13:09.the road. We will take this away now. Then onto the next one.

:13:09. > :13:18.This team is called to clear rubbish that has been dumped. We hope to

:13:18. > :13:32.catch these people. We need residents who see any people to let

:13:32. > :13:41.us know. Charges that is not used to exist.

:13:41. > :13:48.We were still fetching tonnes of fly tipping. It is ironic that people

:13:49. > :13:58.will spend more on petrol finding a quiet country lane than it would for

:13:58. > :14:07.Alice to collect debts. —— for the council to collect it.

:14:07. > :14:16.It is not good for the environment. It looks awful. We are available to

:14:16. > :14:21.take these items. There is no need for anybody to fly tip anything.

:14:21. > :14:26.Councils say fly tipping is devastating for the environment and

:14:26. > :14:43.they will prosecute anyone who is not doing it. Pars. Bat—macro cot.

:14:43. > :14:48.Supporters of a Zimbabwean grandmother who's lived in Leicester

:14:48. > :14:53.for more than a decade say they fear she's about to be deported. They say

:14:53. > :14:57.Evenia Mawongera was detained today when she reported to the UK Border

:14:57. > :15:01.Agency's Centre in Loughborough. Since July she's reported there,

:15:01. > :15:06.asking to stay with her two daughters. She fears for her safety

:15:06. > :15:08.if she returns to her home country, but she's had asylum applications

:15:08. > :15:12.turned down. The Home Office won't comment on her individual case.

:15:12. > :15:15.A charity attempt by a Derbyshire water rescue team to circumnavigate

:15:15. > :15:20.Britain has ended in failure. The Watersafe UK team wanted to raise

:15:20. > :15:24.£20,000 for themselves and the RNLI in the 999 Challenge, going round

:15:24. > :15:28.Britain in nine hours and nine minutes. But they've had to abandon

:15:28. > :15:30.this attempt after their boat was damaged beyond repair. They already

:15:30. > :15:38.have plans to do it all again next summer.

:15:38. > :15:42.In just a few weeks time hundreds of soldiers from across the East

:15:42. > :15:45.Midlands will be deploying to Afghanistan. It's likely to be our

:15:45. > :15:51.region's last major deployment before all our troops are withdrawn

:15:51. > :15:52.from the country. The Royal Anglian Regiment's second Battalion recruits

:15:52. > :15:56.from across Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire. And today at their

:15:56. > :16:05.base, Kendrew Barracks, near Oakham they were given a special send off.

:16:05. > :16:11.Eleanor Garnier was there. They have been training for their

:16:11. > :16:17.two to Afghanistan for months. They leave in just a few weeks. Before

:16:17. > :16:25.they go, a special sendoff for the Royal Anglian Regiment 2nd

:16:25. > :16:34.Battalion. Whites, partners, parents came into the regimental celebration

:16:34. > :16:40.and parade. It is a happy feeling to watch them, that you are sad that

:16:41. > :16:45.they are going. The Royal Anglian Regiment 2nd Battalion has been

:16:45. > :16:53.training to shut down the front—line British bases. This is a two and

:16:53. > :17:06.like any that has gone before. —— this is a two. Our job is to pack up

:17:06. > :17:11.any British presence that is left. The mission in Afghanistan is

:17:11. > :17:21.drawing to a close that pulling out is complex and dangerous. If you

:17:21. > :17:28.were not scared you would be a liar. What happens happens. We have had

:17:28. > :17:34.enough time now to prepare ourselves. These troops will be away

:17:34. > :17:39.from their families for up to eight months. They have not even left yet

:17:39. > :18:01.that everybody is looking foreword to the safe return.

:18:01. > :18:08.So back to work for our Championship teams this weekend and all will be

:18:09. > :18:12.looking for a return to winning ways. Forest suffered their first

:18:13. > :18:17.defeat of the season before the break and tomorrow Chris Cohen will

:18:17. > :18:21.lead them out against Barnsley. He is loving his new role as skipper

:18:21. > :18:22.and Kirsty Edwards has been finding out just how much the captain's

:18:22. > :18:33.armband means. It is a massive honour to be a

:18:33. > :18:38.captain. Having the armband and walking out for the first game is

:18:38. > :18:44.something I will remember for ever. He says it has not changed him. I

:18:44. > :18:50.never shout and scream. I am not going to do that now. I will do the

:18:50. > :18:56.things I have always done. I have to do more jobs off the pitch. More

:18:56. > :19:02.interviews, things like that. Apart from having to talk to the

:19:02. > :19:06.likes of me he had to get out and about representing the club and

:19:06. > :19:11.visiting places like this. He came to this year home to meet a

:19:11. > :19:22.lifelong fan and other keen supporters.

:19:22. > :19:31.The foundations of great clubs are based on supporters. The people in

:19:31. > :19:40.there have been supporting the club for 60 or 70 years. Tomorrow his

:19:40. > :19:45.focus switches to matters on the pitch as they look to get back to

:19:45. > :19:52.winning ways. Three Taff home games this month. —— three difficult home

:19:52. > :19:57.games. We hope to keep the run going at

:19:57. > :20:03.home. Well, let's get our head round the

:20:03. > :20:10.other games. Our Championship clubs have all been going well. But Derby

:20:10. > :20:14.have a tricky trip and Leicester have visitors fresh from the Premier

:20:14. > :20:23.League. Leicester are preparing to welcome

:20:23. > :20:36.would gain. There is a mood at Leicester that they can compete with

:20:36. > :20:49.anyone. We have a lot of experience. Hopefully we can be right up there

:20:49. > :20:56.this evening. —— this season. Derby are off to Millwall. It is a

:20:56. > :21:14.guaranteed Winford Derby, surely? Football is not like that. Notts

:21:14. > :21:19.County have hit the loan markets. Mansfield town welcome your. ——

:21:19. > :21:25.yacht. Don't forget — all those games are

:21:25. > :21:28.on your BBC Local Radio station. You won't miss a thing.

:21:28. > :21:31.Cricket now, and no play for Nottinghamshire at a very wet Lords

:21:31. > :21:36.in the County Championship. Derbyshire did get some cricket in

:21:36. > :21:39.at the County Ground — struggling to take Durham wickets though.

:21:39. > :21:40.And in Division Two, Leicestershire are just struggling.

:21:40. > :21:44.Ice Hockey's Nottingham Panthers are in action tonight — the first of

:21:45. > :21:49.three games in three days in Scotland. They go on the road trip

:21:49. > :21:53.buoyed by a very good first weekend, looking every inch the team that

:21:53. > :21:55.claimed three trophies last season. Dundee tonight, Fife tomorrow and

:21:55. > :21:59.Edinburgh on Sunday. And Southwell jockey Hayley Turner

:21:59. > :22:02.is out of hospital after a her shocker of a fall yesterday at

:22:02. > :22:07.Doncaster. "Battered and bruised" is the description. Turner was thrown

:22:07. > :22:09.hard when her mount, Seal of Approval, clipped the heels of

:22:09. > :22:12.another horse. In rugby, Nottingham get their

:22:12. > :22:15.season underway this weekend with a tough trip to Leeds.

:22:15. > :22:19.But for the Leicester Tigers team getting your hands on a piece of

:22:19. > :22:24.silverware each season has almost become the norm. But often there are

:22:24. > :22:28.clear signs a player might be something a bit special long before

:22:28. > :22:33.they pull on a Tigers' shirt. Angela joined one player going back to his

:22:33. > :22:38.roots. He is a mountain of a man. The

:22:39. > :22:46.youngest of rugby dynasty that legends of the game.

:22:46. > :22:59.Back when it all started she was just a schoolboy.

:22:59. > :23:09.What was he like? Brilliant. He came to the right place. No fewer than

:23:09. > :23:21.three British Lions have come through the ranks. After a year of

:23:21. > :23:29.being here he showed he had the power and strength.

:23:29. > :23:35.He has established themselves as one of the country 's finest. The only

:23:35. > :23:45.one of six brothers to play internationally for England. I

:23:45. > :24:00.remember thinking my mum and dad will be very proud. Alliance, this

:24:00. > :24:17.is latest achievements but he has not forgotten his roots. Late

:24:17. > :24:25.tackles in those early days. Now I do not get yellow cards as often.

:24:25. > :24:35.He made tower over his team—mates but it is as talent that truly

:24:35. > :24:41.inspires. Here is the weather. There is

:24:41. > :24:48.something for everybody this weekend. There will be lots of

:24:48. > :24:53.twists and turns over the next few days. If you are looking for dry or

:24:53. > :25:07.bright weather Saturday is your best bet. Windy weather on Sunday. We

:25:07. > :25:13.have had some heavy and persistent rain this afternoon. It will be with

:25:13. > :25:19.as this evening. It will try to clear away in the early hours of the

:25:19. > :25:34.morning. It will stay on the mild side. Two morrow morning as damp and

:25:34. > :25:44.justly. A decent looking afternoon on Saturday. Spells of sunshine. It

:25:44. > :25:53.will feel quite called. Here is Sunday's pressure chart. This ridge

:25:53. > :25:58.of pressure works South. Add drives start but the clouds will be

:25:58. > :26:05.increasing. Rain will push end by mid—morning. It will try to clear

:26:05. > :26:13.away as we head towards the evening. It will stay quite cool as well. We

:26:13. > :26:23.stay with the blasted heath Dean next week. —— blustery.

:26:23. > :26:28.Let's return now to our top story: The fire in Leicester which claimed

:26:28. > :26:34.the lives of a mum and her three children. Let's go back to Anne

:26:34. > :26:41.who's live at the scene. Anne. This is a very tight—knit community

:26:41. > :26:44.and all the people have been out on the street is and it is not just

:26:44. > :26:54.because of the television cameras. The main focus of this community

:26:55. > :27:02.will be tomorrow when they say prayers for those who died. They

:27:03. > :27:08.will then say prayers on Sunday also.

:27:09. > :27:16.Police desperately searching for clues.

:27:16. > :27:31.Investigations continue into the killing on the street. That was less

:27:31. > :27:40.than one mile from here. Any updates we will bring you on our bulletin

:27:40. > :27:44.tonight. Any updates we will have in our

:27:44. > :27:47.latest news. Goodbye.
