:00:00. > :00:09.This is East Midlands Today with Sarah Teale and me, Dominic Heale.

:00:09. > :00:23.Tonight a Leicester man loses four relatives in the Nairobi terror

:00:23. > :00:26.attack. There were young people who are

:00:26. > :00:35.taking part in a protest in the centre. They have all passed away.

:00:35. > :00:40.Also tonight, questions about police protection after the stabbing to

:00:40. > :00:48.death of a pregnant woman and her toddler. New allegations against a

:00:48. > :00:51.controversial cult —— Darby School. Officials say the claims are

:00:51. > :00:57.worrying. And journeys and at land 's end. Paralympic and Richard

:00:57. > :01:12.Whitehead completes 38 marathons in 40 days. Good evening. Welcome to

:01:12. > :01:15.Monday's programme. First tonight, it's a terror attack which happened

:01:15. > :01:18.thousands of miles away but the siege in Kenya has caused

:01:18. > :01:22.devastation for some families in the East Midlands. One man told us he

:01:22. > :01:31.lost four members of his family in the attack on the shopping centre in

:01:31. > :01:34.Nairobi when gunmen opened fire. Another has described how his

:01:34. > :01:43.teenage brother and sister saw their friends shot dead. Jo Healey has

:01:43. > :01:49.this report. Text sent from a mother in Nairobi to her son in Leicester.

:01:49. > :01:56.She said things become worse, she will die. She had just left the

:01:56. > :02:01.shopping centre. His 18—year—old brother and sister were still

:02:01. > :02:05.inside. She just saw gunmen wandering around everywhere and

:02:05. > :02:13.shooting people, she saw her best friend being shot in the head. Last

:02:13. > :02:17.I heard from my mum and dad they were in hospital and my brother saw

:02:17. > :02:25.his best friend was like dead body outside. They were taking dead

:02:25. > :02:28.bodies and putting them on trolleys and winning in the hospital. Another

:02:28. > :02:33.businessman from Mercer said for young members of his family were

:02:33. > :02:39.killed. He told BBC radio Leicester they had been shopping on Saturday.

:02:39. > :02:46.Young people were taking part in a contest in the centre and they have

:02:46. > :02:52.unfortunately all passed away. It is difficult because in trying to find

:02:53. > :02:57.out if other people are still inside because we don't know where they

:02:57. > :03:00.are. Both men want to remain anonymous, they fear reprisals for

:03:01. > :03:09.their families in tenure or Leicester where many of people have

:03:09. > :03:14.been affected. Obviously people from tenure, everyone is grieving the

:03:14. > :03:23.same thing. We are all shaken. With what is happening. My mother's best

:03:23. > :03:27.friend is still stuck in there. An inquest's heard about the final

:03:27. > :03:31.hours of a man at the centre of a knifing which claimed the lives of

:03:31. > :03:34.his former partner and young son. The hearing, at Derby, has been told

:03:34. > :03:42.that three years ago Rachael Slack died in the stabbing attack along

:03:42. > :03:45.with her son Auden. It happened in Holbrook at the cottage where

:03:45. > :03:49.Rachael and Auden lived. Also dead in the house was Andrew Cairns, the

:03:49. > :03:53.boy's father. The inquest's heard today about a visit he paid to the

:03:53. > :03:56.doctors hours before the deaths. Our reporter James Roberson has been at

:03:56. > :04:02.the hearing today. James, what happened at this visit to the

:04:02. > :04:04.surgery? Believing.

:04:04. > :04:09.The jury here at Derby Coroner's court heard how — at about 8.40am on

:04:09. > :04:12.the morning of June second, 2010, Andrew Cairns turned up for a

:04:12. > :04:17.doctor's appointment at the Ivy grove surgery in Ripley. The

:04:17. > :04:20.receptionist, Enid Shelton, described how he was in a highly

:04:20. > :04:26.agitated state, virtually hyper ventilating, and kept pacing in and

:04:26. > :04:30.out of the reception area. After 45 minutes Cairns went in to see Dr

:04:30. > :04:33.Michael Small one of the GPs. Dr Small described how an anxious

:04:33. > :04:40.Cairns was clutching a photograph of his little son Auden. Dr Small said

:04:40. > :04:44.at one point Cairns told him, "These are going to be the most important

:04:44. > :04:47.days of your life." But the GP who had dealt with Cairns over his

:04:47. > :04:50.mental health problems before — thought that was just a remark to

:04:50. > :04:58.ensure the doctor dealt with his care prporly, otherwise Cairns would

:04:58. > :05:03.complain to the media. The inquest also heard from a motorist who gave

:05:03. > :05:11.Andrew Cairns had to hold work that morning. Yes, the inquest has also

:05:11. > :05:14.heard from Tom Swift who was driving to Holbrook later that morning. He

:05:15. > :05:19.described how a calm, tidy, well dressed man flagged him down, and he

:05:19. > :05:23.gave the man a lift a mile into the village. Mr Swift said they

:05:23. > :05:30.exchanged pleasantries, including how the man, his friend Rachael and

:05:30. > :05:33.their son often walked this route. As they parted, the man asked Tom

:05:33. > :05:36.swift his name, said "My name's Andrew" and shook his hand. "He

:05:36. > :05:40.seemed a gentleman," Mr Swift told the jury. Less than an hour later,

:05:40. > :05:48.Cairns, Rachel and Auden were all dead. The inquest continues.

:05:48. > :05:51.An inspection of a controversial school has been brought forward

:05:51. > :05:54.after concerns were raised about how it's being run. The latest

:05:54. > :05:57.allegations levelled against the Al Madinah School in Derby have been

:05:57. > :06:02.described by officials as "very worrying." Earlier this month we

:06:02. > :06:08.revealed how the school was already being investigated over alleged

:06:08. > :06:14.financial irregularities. Simon Hare reports.

:06:14. > :06:17.Another day, and news of another government probe into how the

:06:17. > :06:25.controversial Al Medinah School in Derby is run. It opened last year,

:06:25. > :06:29.promising a strong Muslim ethos. As a free school, it is outside local

:06:29. > :06:33.authority control, it is funded by public money. Last month we revealed

:06:33. > :06:37.how the awarding of contracts to the school was being investigated by the

:06:37. > :06:40.Department of education. We understand that a number of other

:06:40. > :06:45.concerns have now been raised including the treatment of staff and

:06:45. > :06:50.the suggestion that an over emphasis on Islamic studies to the detriment

:06:50. > :06:56.of core subjects. That has prompted the government to act again. The

:06:56. > :07:01.Department for education says that the allegations levelled against Al

:07:01. > :07:05.Medinah are a very worrying. Inspectors were due to pay a visit

:07:05. > :07:09.here at some point during the term. Now, following discussions, the date

:07:09. > :07:21.for the inspection has been brought forward. A statement continued...

:07:21. > :07:31.Those rules include delivering a broad and balanced correctly on ——

:07:31. > :07:37.critically. Teaching unions say the ideas of free schools are flawed.

:07:37. > :07:45.This is indicative of why we are scared about free schools because of

:07:45. > :07:48.the lack of local accountability. The school did not return our calls.

:07:48. > :07:53.In a statement to parents on its website it said we simply ask for

:07:53. > :07:58.time to get going, and to grow into an excellent school.

:07:58. > :08:02.You're watching East Midlands Today. Still to come on tonight's programme

:08:02. > :08:06.— jubilation for the Outlaws who win their first cup for 24 years.

:08:06. > :08:15.Bowling hero Samit Patel will be with us in the studio. No prizes for

:08:15. > :08:21.the weather today. Despite the high pressure, it is also keeping us very

:08:21. > :08:27.cloudy. We're hoping we'll see more sunshine tomorrow.

:08:27. > :08:33.A man's been arrested in connection with a fire at a house earlier

:08:33. > :08:37.today. Fire crews were called to the house at Kimberley in

:08:37. > :08:40.Nottinghamshire early this morning. A 25—year—old woman and her

:08:40. > :08:45.two—year—old daughter have had to be rehoused, because their home is so

:08:46. > :08:48.badly damaged. Nottinghamshire Police are urging a

:08:49. > :08:52.missing 14—year—old to return home. Ciaran Sweeny was reported missing

:08:52. > :08:58.from his home on the Oak Tree estate in Mansfield on Saturday 14

:08:58. > :09:02.September. Although there have been numerous sightings of him in the

:09:02. > :09:05.local area he is yet to return home. The last sighting was at about 2pm

:09:05. > :09:11.yesterday in Longshaw Road, Mansfield.

:09:11. > :09:13.A new experimental treatment to bring down high blood pressure is

:09:13. > :09:17.being tested at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital. A tiny metal

:09:17. > :09:22.implant resembling a paperclip is placed in the groin. It then links a

:09:22. > :09:27.major artery and vein so blood flows through more easily. The University

:09:27. > :09:30.of Leicester which is carrying out the research says it's designed for

:09:30. > :09:40.patients for whom medication hasn't worked.

:09:40. > :09:46.A case of mistaken identity. It is not a person we're talking about. It

:09:46. > :09:52.is a cricket ball. It was apparently one of three balls when Gary Sobers

:09:52. > :09:56.hit a historic six sixes in 1968 was playing for Nottinghamshire against

:09:56. > :10:03.Glamorgan. The reason that it matters is that it sold for a world

:10:03. > :10:07.record price of £26,000. The investigation into the sale has been

:10:07. > :10:19.featured on the night was my inside out. It is arguably the most famous

:10:19. > :10:26.over in cricket history. Nobody hits six sixes before Gary Sobers. The

:10:26. > :10:29.ball smashed around was to sporting memorabilia 40 years later. The

:10:30. > :10:37.problem is that after an 18 month investigation the ball was sold that

:10:37. > :10:41.was not used in the match. It is the most famous ball in cricket and the

:10:41. > :10:44.most famous over in cricket. All of this doubt remains, was at the

:10:44. > :10:52.ball? Was not the ball? I can tell you that was not. The ball that

:10:52. > :11:00.Christie sold was all due concern, only another double ball was used in

:11:00. > :11:09.the match. Glamorgan's Malcolm now should know, he was the ball at that

:11:09. > :11:15.day. I had got a few wickets, it was for 460, in five minutes it was 21

:11:16. > :11:19.overs, and four for 100. It ruined the day. The footage of the

:11:19. > :11:24.cricketing first confirms that only one ball was using the over.

:11:24. > :11:35.Christie 's said it was one of three balls and in insist it was genuine.

:11:35. > :11:41.I only use one ball. Gary Sobers did not profit from the sale. He said he

:11:41. > :11:45.was an innocent bystander. The money from the auction went to pay medical

:11:45. > :11:54.bills who thought she had sold the real ball. It has left us with

:11:54. > :12:01.another mystery of where the real ball is.

:12:01. > :12:10.Intriguing stuff. Inside out is on at 7:30pm later this evening. Still

:12:10. > :12:14.to come, journeys and four and in exhausted Richard Whitehead. The

:12:14. > :12:18.final mile was run at Land's this afternoon. We will hear from Richard

:12:18. > :12:25.later. The Labour Party says 37,000

:12:25. > :12:28.pre—school children in the East Midlands would benefit from its

:12:28. > :12:34.pledge to increase free child care, if it wins the next General

:12:35. > :12:38.Election. It was one of the policy promises revealed today by Ed Balls,

:12:38. > :12:43.the politician who hopes to be the next Chancellor of the Exchequer. He

:12:43. > :12:46.was addressing the Labour conference in Brighton, from where our

:12:46. > :12:53.Political Editor John Hess sent this report.

:12:53. > :12:58.It is through those double doors that the Labour faithful are walking

:12:58. > :13:03.in in order to hear the message from the leadership of some of the

:13:03. > :13:08.policies they hope will bring a Labour general election victory. Let

:13:08. > :13:13.us be proud. Policies on childcare, the cost of the high—speed rail

:13:13. > :13:18.link. Part of the economic message is being shaped by Nottingham East,

:13:18. > :13:23.Chris Leslie, the shadow finance minister. There is a lot of news

:13:23. > :13:26.from Nottingham that I think is important that gets on the political

:13:26. > :13:31.agenda and one of those has to be about the bedroom tax and the effect

:13:31. > :13:34.that has been having on the anxieties that people are facing.

:13:34. > :13:38.Being able to say that we will scrap the bedroom tax and know that we can

:13:38. > :13:42.pay for that is a big, big step forward. Flavour are to win, it will

:13:43. > :13:47.depend on parliamentary hopefuls like Catherine Atkinson, a barrister

:13:47. > :13:52.that has been selected to win back Labour hopes in the seat that it

:13:52. > :13:57.lost to Jessica Lee. We are getting out doing some canvassing today.

:13:57. > :14:02.That is fantastic. Catherine was meeting some of the youngest party

:14:02. > :14:08.members. She will need that to turn over a 2500 Conservative majority.

:14:08. > :14:12.We have got 20 months until the next election. I am looking to talk to

:14:12. > :14:17.everyone that I can. We are talking about the offer that we have in

:14:17. > :14:21.getting people back to work, reduce the ridiculous cost of living that

:14:21. > :14:26.people are trying to live on and I think that I have got 20 months to

:14:26. > :14:38.do that and that is my job. Also at Brighton, one of the youngest Labour

:14:38. > :14:43.delegates. It is overwhelming, there is not enough time to do everything.

:14:43. > :14:47.You need to begin Jews, there is a wealth of opportunity. Today we

:14:47. > :15:01.heard Labour's economic vision and tomorrow Ed Miliband will tell us

:15:01. > :15:04.his vision. Now, though, time for sport and this is a very special

:15:04. > :15:08.piece of silverware. It's the first cup won by Nottinghamshire Cricket

:15:08. > :15:10.Club in 24 years. And while we look after this, let's pass you over to

:15:10. > :15:14.Colin. It was a fantastic game. Something

:15:15. > :15:17.really special for Nottinghamshire Cricket, crowned the One Day

:15:17. > :15:22.champions in their first Lords final since 1989. And to celebrate the man

:15:22. > :15:25.of the moment, Samit Patel, is here. Notts went into the match with

:15:25. > :15:29.Glamorgan as red—hot favourites and showed why with a comprehensive

:15:29. > :15:33.87—run victory. They were propelled to a big runs total by a fantastic

:15:33. > :15:39.stand from captain Chris Read and Nottinghamshire's favourite

:15:39. > :15:42.Australian David Hussey. And then, just when Glamorgan's batsmen seemed

:15:42. > :15:48.to be putting down roots, in came our man Samit. Three overs, three

:15:48. > :15:52.wickets and the game all but won. The celebrations when all was done

:15:52. > :15:56.comprehensive and joyous. Samit, how good a day was that?

:15:56. > :16:08.. An amazing day from start to finish.

:16:08. > :16:11.The actual day was phenomenal, a credit to all of the guys in the

:16:11. > :16:15.backroom staff in the county and the fans that came to watch. It was a

:16:15. > :16:18.great day. We won't get too technical, but I think even

:16:18. > :16:21.non—cricket fans can spot why your bowling was so effective. These the

:16:21. > :16:28.slow motion replays — how do you produce unplayable balls like that?

:16:28. > :16:34.I am not sure, really. I just tried to spin the ball as hard as I could

:16:34. > :16:39.and that is about it. It certainly worked. The Ministry knock them

:16:39. > :16:43.over. —— you manage to knock them over. You had to, I suppose, you

:16:43. > :16:47.suggested in an interview a few days ago, you were way too good for

:16:47. > :16:56.Glamorgan. I think a lot of credit goes to the boys. We prepared in the

:16:56. > :17:03.backroom staff, like the physio, a credit to the guys who turn up on

:17:03. > :17:10.the day. Let's talk about the fans a little bit. Thousand of them

:17:10. > :17:14.travelled down. They sang, they danced, they got the players dancing

:17:14. > :17:19.and when they saw me afterwards with my camera they celebrated some more.

:17:19. > :17:27.Mr Patel, stunning. He was outstanding. We have done it. A

:17:27. > :17:35.brilliant result today, well deserved. And we are champions. How

:17:35. > :17:42.important have those fans been to all the Notts boys? They have turned

:17:42. > :17:47.out in numbers all year. We did not quite make it last year. They were

:17:47. > :17:53.like a 12th man to us on Saturday. They turned up, it was brilliant, is

:17:53. > :17:59.good for the county. There is still a lot of work to do. Your not clear

:17:59. > :18:03.of relegation. We can't let you go about talking about the England

:18:03. > :18:07.squad. Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann fly the Notts flag in Australia. But

:18:07. > :18:13.you're not in the squad. Did you still have England ambitions? I will

:18:13. > :18:16.still play in all formats of the game for England. Hopefully I will

:18:16. > :18:25.do that soon. A lot of work to do, obviously, I do feel for titch, he

:18:25. > :18:34.has produced time and time again and I feel he is unlucky. A pretty good

:18:34. > :18:37.advert for you on Saturday. Now, onto the football. Our visit to

:18:37. > :18:41.Meadow Lane coming up, but the Championship first. Plenty of drama

:18:41. > :18:44.and good goals — but no wins to report for Mark Shardlow.

:18:44. > :18:50.Lester's derby by the sea saw them go behind at Blackpool. They won all

:18:50. > :18:54.of their games a season without conceding a goal. That changed early

:18:54. > :19:01.in the second half when Jamie Varney was brought down. The penalty broke

:19:01. > :19:05.the deadlock. A second followed a couple of minutes later. Andy

:19:05. > :19:11.King's volley could not have been better. Leicester one and went to

:19:11. > :19:18.second place. After a rush of blood from Kasper Schmeichel conceded a

:19:18. > :19:25.penalty. Nottingham Forest in the grey came up against Fred Arrigo

:19:26. > :19:27.Trader, a permission player now online at Doncaster. He showed why

:19:27. > :19:42.he was online. Matt Taylor was then the second half

:19:42. > :19:48.to restore's Doncaster lead. How about this from Andy Reid? As for

:19:48. > :19:52.Derby County, it was about sloppy defending. They can't win at home.

:19:52. > :19:57.It was Reding who took their chances and took the points will stop

:19:58. > :20:04.incredibly, Derby have now lost three and drawn one at pride Park.

:20:04. > :20:08.Derby gave himself a chance but as they pressed for the equaliser, gaps

:20:08. > :20:13.developed and Reading wrapped things up with a third.

:20:14. > :20:17.Now, Notts County, who admit their first win of the season probably

:20:17. > :20:21.saved the management team from the sack. That's how much it meant to a

:20:21. > :20:24.club which has been under pressure after a dreadful start to the

:20:24. > :20:29.season. Angela spent match day at Meadow Lane.

:20:30. > :20:37.As the fans filed in for the match anyone hoping for a vote of

:20:37. > :20:41.confidence would have been badly disappointed. We are a football

:20:41. > :20:45.club, we need to win games of football. It affects our business

:20:45. > :20:51.model by losing games. How long is a piece of string? 90 minutes at

:20:51. > :20:57.least. It has been the worst start of the season in the 150 years

:20:57. > :21:05.history. Little wonder everyone is feeling the pressure at Meadow Lane.

:21:05. > :21:07.This would have eased those nerves, Notts County going ahead seven

:21:07. > :21:15.minutes in. There were chapters galore as the team looked determined

:21:15. > :21:25.to prevent out as long —— prove the doubters wrong. That will do for me.

:21:25. > :21:31.They know that they can do it. They will not stay at the bottom for

:21:31. > :21:41.long. If we would have asked we would have got the sack. —— lost.

:21:41. > :21:47.Maybe this performance and result has enticed people.

:21:47. > :21:56.In League Two Mansfield Town are up into the play—off positions after a

:21:56. > :21:59.comfortable win over Northampton. A wonderful own—goal coming up but

:22:00. > :22:03.first a well taken free kick by Ben Hutchinson that gave Mansfield the

:22:03. > :22:06.lead, soon followed by this from Sam Clucas to make it 2—0. And then this

:22:06. > :22:11.classic moment from Northampton's Mathias Kouo—Doumbe.

:22:11. > :22:17.Wow. In rugby union, the Leicester Tigers

:22:17. > :22:26.legend Dean Richards returned to Welford Road at the weekend with his

:22:26. > :22:30.Newcastle side. But they were given a sound beating by a rampant Tigers

:22:30. > :22:33.who got off the mark when Jordan Crane crossed over. Manu Tuilagi put

:22:33. > :22:36.his Downing Street episode behind him with a powerful display, setting

:22:36. > :22:39.up Graham Kitchener for try number two. And then doing the work before

:22:39. > :22:43.freeing the Californian Blaine Sculley who scored the third of five

:22:43. > :22:47.tries in the Tigers 31—6 victory. Nottingham took a bit of a hammering

:22:47. > :22:49.in their first home game of the season. They were playing the

:22:49. > :22:54.Championship favourites London Welsh. The forward power from the

:22:54. > :22:59.Exiles was too much. And after a very even first half Nottingham were
