:00:00. > 3:59:59by Islamist extremists. That's all from the BBC News at Six. So it's

:00:00. > :00:08.goodbye from me, This is East Midlands Today.

:00:09. > :00:28.Tonight, MPs demand action to reduce the risk of fatal hospital blunders.

:00:29. > :00:36.Why have people got two died to bring things in? It seems Matt. Also

:00:37. > :00:43.tonight, facing the axe. This fire station.

:00:44. > :00:46.Plus the school sports award set up in memory of a young teenager

:00:47. > :00:53.stabbed to death. And I find out how robots are being

:00:54. > :01:00.used more in education. Join us later in the programme!

:01:01. > :01:03.Welcome to Friday's programme. First tonight, the chairman of an

:01:04. > :01:06.influential group of MPs is worried that not enough is being done to

:01:07. > :01:23.prevent a repeat of a hospital blunder which killed a

:01:24. > :01:26.Nottinghamshire teenager. Wayne Jowett, who was 18, died at

:01:27. > :01:28.Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre 12 years ago. Tragically, an

:01:29. > :01:32.anti`cancer drug was mistakenly put into his spine instead of a vein.

:01:33. > :01:35.Stephen Dorrell who heads the Commons Health Select Committee will

:01:36. > :01:37.raise the issue in Parliament next week. Here's our health

:01:38. > :01:40.correspondent to tell us more. Wayne Jowett was in remission from

:01:41. > :01:43.leukaemia when the fatal blunder happened at Notitngham's Queen's

:01:44. > :01:51.Medical Centre. That hospital now uses fail safe syringe connectors to

:01:52. > :01:56.prevent a repeat. Most others aren't. It's thought 90 out of the

:01:57. > :02:05.160 acute trusts in England still don't use them. Now there are

:02:06. > :02:09.growing calls for answers. Wayne was not the first. His family

:02:10. > :02:16.hope he will be the last to die from this. Tonight, his mother is pleased

:02:17. > :02:23.the Health Select Committee will probe by these devices are not in

:02:24. > :02:29.use in all NHS hospitals. It seems forever. It just seems to be taking

:02:30. > :02:35.far too long. To get these things moving. Why have people got to die?

:02:36. > :02:49.To bring things in? It just seems mad. This MP has been persuaded to

:02:50. > :02:57.raise this issue by the man who led the enquiry into Wayne's death.

:02:58. > :03:06.Clinicians have the right to use the equipment they want to use. I agree

:03:07. > :03:10.with that. Ever clinicians doesn't use a device or has not tried it,

:03:11. > :03:15.how can you possibly know whether it is safe or not? My view is

:03:16. > :03:18.clinicians should engage with this immediately.

:03:19. > :03:36.Wayne's family have campaigned tirelessly to prevent a repeat. We

:03:37. > :03:41.have been told that the government are aware of the concerns and they

:03:42. > :03:42.are working with the NHS to come up with proposals.

:03:43. > :03:46.Next tonight, opposition is growing to plans that would see a number of

:03:47. > :03:49.fire stations in Derbyshire close. The county's Fire Service says it

:03:50. > :03:53.needs to make dramatic changes due to a 40% cut in its budget. Our

:03:54. > :03:56.reporter has been to one community fighting to save its fire station.

:03:57. > :04:03.The children's TV classic, trumpet and. But is it a quaint and outdated

:04:04. > :04:10.concept for every town to have its own fire station? Pugh, Pugh, Barney

:04:11. > :04:18.McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub. This fire station is under threat of

:04:19. > :04:25.closure. This man wrote about the story in the village newspaper.

:04:26. > :04:30.Costs ?81,000 every year to keep this fire station running. That

:04:31. > :04:37.doesn't seem to be a tremendous amount of money. There are plans to

:04:38. > :04:42.reduce the number of fire stations by a third and cut full`time posts

:04:43. > :04:50.by a quarter. The chief promises it will may have a minimal impact on

:04:51. > :04:56.response times. This woman was grateful for a fast response to a

:04:57. > :05:03.chimney fire at her home. They arrived in less than five minutes.

:05:04. > :05:09.If that was a fire brigade from Derby, it would take them at least

:05:10. > :05:13.half an hour to come here. Residents here and another communities have

:05:14. > :05:26.launched campaigns against closures. I think is disgusting. There are

:05:27. > :05:34.lots of places nearby that need protecting. We are proud of the fire

:05:35. > :05:42.station. 0 protecting. We are proud of the fire

:05:43. > :05:47.station. Pride earned by the role it played in 1989. They were first on

:05:48. > :05:51.the scene at this year disaster. But this station could soon receive its

:05:52. > :05:54.final call out. Still to come, a warning of more

:05:55. > :06:09.traffic problems in Nottingham. Could it be a Black Monday for back

:06:10. > :06:17.to work commuters? Plus, why are more of our taking up

:06:18. > :06:20.Mandarin? A nine`year`old pupil in Leicester

:06:21. > :06:25.has been given an award for sporting excellence in memory of his former

:06:26. > :06:34.teacher who was killed last month. 20``year`old Antoin Akpom died after

:06:35. > :06:37.being stabbed in the street. Teachers at the school where he

:06:38. > :06:45.taught hope this new sportsmanship award will inspire pupils. Our

:06:46. > :06:52.reporter has this exclusive report. It gives me great pleasure to give

:06:53. > :07:06.this award to Jade and Patel in primary for. Nine`year`old Jaden

:07:07. > :07:18.became the first pupil to win this award. Popular teacher, Antoin

:07:19. > :07:25.Akpom, died last month after being stabbed. It made me feel happy

:07:26. > :07:37.because I was representing the family. Because Antoin Akpom has

:07:38. > :07:45.lost his life, a would like to think he still remembers me. Antoin Akpom

:07:46. > :07:51.lived for sport. With his best friend, a fellow PE teacher, they

:07:52. > :07:56.set up a sports business. The motto was changing children's lives

:07:57. > :08:05.through sport. I am sure he would be smiling down, full of joy. This is a

:08:06. > :08:09.great way for his legacy to live on. Best friends, business partners,

:08:10. > :08:18.they love each other as brothers. Jewel was by Antoin Akpom's side

:08:19. > :08:22.moments after he was stabbed. To see a man like this bleeding and dying,

:08:23. > :08:26.basically, that is something that will never leave my memory because

:08:27. > :08:36.it is something that should never be seen from such a great man. Pupils,

:08:37. > :08:41.teachers and Antoin Akpom's family hope this award will help inspire

:08:42. > :08:49.others and keep Antoin Akpom in their memory.

:08:50. > :08:53.Three men have appeared before magistrates charged with the murder

:08:54. > :08:56.of a man in Nottingham. The body of Simon Hay, who was 47, was

:08:57. > :09:00.discovered in a flat on Villa Street in Beeston on Sunday afternoon. Two

:09:01. > :09:03.men from Beeston and another man from Cotgrave were charged last

:09:04. > :09:08.night. They have been remanded in custody to appear at Crown Court on

:09:09. > :09:12.Monday. The BBC has learned that dozens of

:09:13. > :09:14.parents have asked Derby City Council about moving their children

:09:15. > :09:18.away from the Al`Madinah free school. 67 enquiries have been made

:09:19. > :09:21.to the council by parents interested in taking their children out of the

:09:22. > :09:23.school. 33 have made formal applications to put their children

:09:24. > :09:27.elsewhere. The figures pre`date yesterday's Ofsted report which said

:09:28. > :09:31.the school was failing in all areas and was dysfunctional.

:09:32. > :09:34.A footbridge has been officially opened at a Nottinghamshire level

:09:35. > :09:38.crossing where three people have been killed in recent years. Network

:09:39. > :09:41.Rail has spent ?1.5 million installing the new structure,

:09:42. > :09:46.following calls to improve safety at Moor Bridge. Last November,

:09:47. > :09:57.13`year`old Lindsey Inger died after being hit by a tram on the crossing

:09:58. > :10:01.which links Bestwood and Hucknall. I feel this is a good thing.

:10:02. > :10:05.Hopefully it will save other peoples lives. If it had been done in the

:10:06. > :10:12.first place, she would still be here. We have mixed emotions.

:10:13. > :10:16.Hopefully tragedies will never happen again here.

:10:17. > :10:19.A grieving father has appealed to the parents of horse riders to

:10:20. > :10:21.ensure that their children wear protective clothing, including

:10:22. > :10:23.inflatable air jackets. Robin Woodward was speaking after his

:10:24. > :10:27.daughter Aimee was fatally injured when the horse she was riding rolled

:10:28. > :10:38.on top of her. She was not wearing modern, body protection.

:10:39. > :10:48.Memories are no all this family have left. Aimee's home in Derbyshire

:10:49. > :10:58.contains treasured photographs of the 22`year`old who died falling

:10:59. > :11:08.from her horse. Her father says he was shocked to learn that there is

:11:09. > :11:14.no legislation for a riding schools to wear protection. You need to get

:11:15. > :11:16.the best protective gear you can possibly by. Nobody else will do it

:11:17. > :11:22.for you. You 0 possibly by. Nobody else will do it

:11:23. > :11:28.for you. You are on your own. Inflatable `` inflatable jackets

:11:29. > :11:32.that deploy like airbags cost ?400. But this family think they are worth

:11:33. > :11:43.that. They are attached to the saddle. When riders fall, the airbag

:11:44. > :11:50.inflates. They have definitely saved lives. It is something that you

:11:51. > :11:55.don't think can happen to you. But it can. It has happened to me. I

:11:56. > :12:02.don't want it to happen to another child, another parent. Don't want

:12:03. > :12:32.them to be in my position. `` I don't want.

:12:33. > :12:36.Three men have appeared before magistrates charged with the murder

:12:37. > :12:39.of a man in Nottingham. The body of Simon Hay, who was 47, was

:12:40. > :12:43.discovered in a flat on Villa Street in Beeston on Sunday afternoon. Two

:12:44. > :12:46.men from Beeston and another man from Cotgrave were charged last

:12:47. > :12:48.night. They have been remanded in custody to appear at Crown Court on

:12:49. > :12:52.Monday. Legionella has been found at parts

:12:53. > :12:59.of one of our hospitals. No patients have been put at risk. Hospital

:13:00. > :13:02.administrators say they are dealing with the situation.

:13:03. > :13:05.Drivers are being warned to prepare for more disruption in the coming

:13:06. > :13:08.weeks, especially commuters who travel between Nottingham and Derby.

:13:09. > :13:11.From Sunday, there'll be works on the A52 at Bardills roundabout in

:13:12. > :13:12.Nottingham which will last two weeks.

:13:13. > :13:16.Rush hour this morning at this roundabout. There are warnings that

:13:17. > :13:25.traffic here could get worse over the next two week, as work to move

:13:26. > :13:31.cables begins, in preparation for a new transport hub. All approaches to

:13:32. > :13:40.the roundabout will be reduced to one lane. There will be no access

:13:41. > :13:47.onto the A52 carriageway for junction five of the M1. Three other

:13:48. > :13:54.major transport projects are happening in Nottingham. The tram

:13:55. > :14:02.extension will extend the existing network. Also the improvements to

:14:03. > :14:05.the ring road. This will affect journey times. We are getting the

:14:06. > :14:12.work done as quickly as we can. We hope to get it done within two

:14:13. > :14:17.weeks. Please plan ahead and try to think of different routes or

:14:18. > :14:24.different times you could do your journey. ?750 million is being spent

:14:25. > :14:27.to improve the transport network in Nottingham. With the results are

:14:28. > :14:30.unlikely to be felt for some time, drivers must prepare for disruption

:14:31. > :14:33.for now. Our reporter is at one of the

:14:34. > :14:40.Nottingham's busiest junctions for us. Why is this work happening now?

:14:41. > :14:41.Well, the council has tried to minimise the impact 0

:14:42. > :14:46.Well, the council has tried to minimise the impact of this latest

:14:47. > :14:54.disruption by coinciding with the half term holiday. It is advising

:14:55. > :14:57.travelling `` it is advising drivers travelling to use different routes.

:14:58. > :15:04.We have seen plenty of traffic this evening, which is only likely to get

:15:05. > :15:11.worse in the weeks to come. The work on that roundabout games on Sunday.

:15:12. > :15:14.You have been warned! Still to come: In sport, a lovely

:15:15. > :15:20.mover. The Forest midfielder who is as famous for his celebrations as he

:15:21. > :15:28.is for his goal`scoring. Is it time for our children to learn

:15:29. > :15:31.Mandarin? Some are calling for changes in the classroom as China

:15:32. > :15:38.continues its transformation into a global economic powerhouse.

:15:39. > :15:41.Currently it is thought only a small number of schools in our region

:15:42. > :15:44.teach Mandarin to GCSE level. All this week, our reporter has been

:15:45. > :15:55.looking at this region's links with China. Here's his last report.

:15:56. > :16:03.Mandarin lessons at this academy in Nottinghamshire. The GCSE course

:16:04. > :16:08.started in January. More people should study Mandarin because they

:16:09. > :16:12.say it is the language of the future. With China being such a big

:16:13. > :16:19.economic powerhouse, it would be good to use it. It is one of only a

:16:20. > :16:28.small number of schools in our region to teach Mandarin. 600 fewer

:16:29. > :16:38.people studied GCSE Mandarin this year than in 2010. In China, English

:16:39. > :16:50.is a compulsory class. Children start to learn the language in

:16:51. > :16:56.kindergarten. It is depressing that so few people are studying this, but

:16:57. > :17:00.things are changing. Forward`thinking schools are

:17:01. > :17:07.introducing Mandarin. We are sure that others will follow. We want to

:17:08. > :17:14.make sure that children are equipped for the world of work. Next year,

:17:15. > :17:22.they are to strengthen Mandarin teaching with a trip to China.

:17:23. > :17:26.I believe you can speak some Mandarin?

:17:27. > :17:33.One of my favourite words means thank you.

:17:34. > :17:36.Now it is time for the sport. First big news from Nottingham

:17:37. > :17:39.Forest. The club have confirmed in the last few hours that manager

:17:40. > :17:43.Billy Davies has signed a new contract keeping him at the city

:17:44. > :17:46.Ground until 2017. It means a four year extension to his current deal

:17:47. > :17:49.and is significant because it's rare for managers to get lengthy deals

:17:50. > :17:53.nowadays. Chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi said tonight he is looking forward

:17:54. > :17:56.to working with Billy for many years to come and made clear when he first

:17:57. > :18:05.became chairman that Davies was part of his long term plans.

:18:06. > :18:10.Billy will be with us like Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. I

:18:11. > :18:13.mean that. His team are in action against

:18:14. > :18:16.Bournemouth tomorrow. This week midfielder Henri Lansbury went back

:18:17. > :18:20.to school to teach the pupils at Saint Edmund Campion about his life

:18:21. > :18:31.as a footballer and a bit about his dance moves too.

:18:32. > :18:34.Here's the midfield maestro that is the fans favourite. Instead of

:18:35. > :18:41.answering my questions, some pint`size pundits put him on the

:18:42. > :18:46.spot. I think we have a chance of going to the Premier League. It is a

:18:47. > :18:52.hard championship. We can only do our best each week. He knows what it

:18:53. > :18:56.takes to get there. Twice promoted from the championship, he believes

:18:57. > :19:02.this Nottingham Forest side can do it as well. You can't drop

:19:03. > :19:12.concentration for two minutes in the game or the other team will score.

:19:13. > :19:18.Consistency is the main thing. So far, life is sweet. They have a

:19:19. > :19:30.great team spirit. I think that helps in the championship. We have a

:19:31. > :19:37.good team spirit and we all gel. He has scored for Mac goals so far. His

:19:38. > :19:48.target is ten. He has a new goal celebration. I am just trying some

:19:49. > :19:57.new celebrations. We try to copy music videos. My friend has quite a

:19:58. > :20:12.few up his sleeve. Years teaching me some. Is a promise of some dance

:20:13. > :20:23.moves in future two possibly! In future? Possibly!

:20:24. > :20:27.At Derby County Steve McClaren has made his first new signing. Striker

:20:28. > :20:30.Simon Dawkins has joined on a three month loan from Spurs. He's been

:20:31. > :20:34.training with the Rams and a deal was agreed to keep him at Pride Park

:20:35. > :20:37.as cover for injured players. Now, onto Leicester City where

:20:38. > :20:40.20`year`old defender Liam Moore has just been given the Football

:20:41. > :20:43.League's Young Player of the Month award. It is just the latest stage

:20:44. > :20:47.in a remarkable rise for Moore who is Leicester through and through. I

:20:48. > :20:50.went to see him to talk about the past and the future.

:20:51. > :20:58.I have been lucky here. I have always enjoyed my football here.

:20:59. > :21:04.Many young footballers don't get to travel such a long road. It is

:21:05. > :21:08.frightening how many people I have made friends with here and then you

:21:09. > :21:12.don't hear from them. There are good players who I thought would go far.

:21:13. > :21:19.It shows you how tough it is to make it in the English league. I am very

:21:20. > :21:24.fortunate. What makes you stand out? I don't know, really. I have always

:21:25. > :21:30.worked hard at my game. With hard work comes some luck. I have had

:21:31. > :21:38.some nice breaks. When you get them, it is down to you to take them.

:21:39. > :21:44.Starting every game this season, scoring his first Leicester goal and

:21:45. > :21:49.now this. Does this award matter to you? It is very nice. It is

:21:50. > :21:55.something I can keep forever. It is an achievement. If it is personal

:21:56. > :22:03.success or team success, I will always choose team success. Football

:22:04. > :22:11.is an individual and team sport? Definitely. If the team is playing

:22:12. > :22:16.well, it makes your job as an individual easier. Recognition can

:22:17. > :22:22.sometimes bring pressure. You are quite laid back about everything? If

:22:23. > :22:29.you can't handle pressure, what is the point in playing football? That

:22:30. > :22:33.could be 70,000 people at Wembley watching you. You need to take

:22:34. > :22:37.everything in your stride and go from there.

:22:38. > :22:40.Other football, Notts County are in League One action tonight. They are

:22:41. > :22:44.off to Swindon. While Mansfield Town have a more conventional Saturday

:22:45. > :22:46.kick off, but a long trip. Away at Torquay.

:22:47. > :22:50.Leicester Tigers are at home tonight in the Heineken Cup to Italian side

:22:51. > :23:03.Treviso, not the pushovers they once were.

:23:04. > :23:08.Nottingham Panthers host the Continental cup this weekend. First

:23:09. > :23:15.game in 40 minutes. Loads going on this weekend!

:23:16. > :23:19.Next tonight, robots. We may not quite be at the stage where they

:23:20. > :23:21.make the tea and clean our cars. But East Midlands researchers say

:23:22. > :23:24.interaction between humans and robots is proving very effective in

:23:25. > :23:26.education. Both of Nottingham's universities are carrying out

:23:27. > :23:29.studies into how people with learning disabilities can benefit

:23:30. > :23:42.from a bit of automated encouragement.

:23:43. > :23:51.Michael is using symbols and voice commands to instruct these robots.

:23:52. > :23:55.They can even dance. MUSIC the universities in Nottingham, along

:23:56. > :24:02.with some school pupils, have been discovering that communication

:24:03. > :24:07.skills can improve when they are used as educational tools. Using

:24:08. > :24:10.robots for communication skills is far greater than the kind of

:24:11. > :24:14.engagement you get in normal classroom activity. That is

:24:15. > :24:20.incredibly important because there is no deep learning in the students

:24:21. > :24:27.through that engagement. They can think, they can walk, they can talk

:24:28. > :24:35.and they can dance. These two cost between 8000 and ?9,000 each. It is

:24:36. > :24:42.novel and motivating enough for the students that have to put in a lot

:24:43. > :24:47.of effort to even press a switch. Technology is becoming more and more

:24:48. > :24:54.a part of everyday life. No doubt robot and human interaction is

:24:55. > :25:17.something to be developed further. ROBOT: Simon Ward, BBC East Midlands

:25:18. > :25:22.today. I was going to say that! Quite surprising temperatures this

:25:23. > :25:26.weekend. Even night`time temperatures across the south of the

:25:27. > :25:37.country are not falling lower than 11 degrees. My old for the next few

:25:38. > :25:46.days. We have blustery showers. We have some rain on the way tonight.

:25:47. > :25:51.We have some showers earlier. It is quite patchy, but it will still keep

:25:52. > :25:56.us very wet into the early hours of tomorrow. Night`time temperatures

:25:57. > :26:05.falling now lower than 11 or 12. A mild and windy night. We are going

:26:06. > :26:17.to also see a damp start to the day. Gradually, some like this ``
