:00:00. > :00:09.This is East Midlands Today with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.

:00:10. > :00:20.Tonight: A misadventure verdict on a burglar who died trapped inside a

:00:21. > :00:22.chimney. It's thought Kevin Gough was burgling a solicitors office

:00:23. > :00:29.when he became lodged behind a bricked up fireplace.

:00:30. > :00:33.Also tonight, as our war dead are remembered, the East Midlands

:00:34. > :00:40.prepares for next year's centenary of the start of the Great War.

:00:41. > :00:44.And we are in the East Midlands and market town voted the best in the

:00:45. > :00:50.country for raising a family. Where am I? Find out shortly.

:00:51. > :00:52.And a new plan to rejuvenate shopping in Nottingham. A deal to be

:00:53. > :01:04.signed within days. Good evening and welcome to the

:01:05. > :01:08.programme. First tonight: Unusual and tragic ` that was the

:01:09. > :01:11.description today of the death of a man in Derby, who was found in a

:01:12. > :01:13.bricked`up chimney at an office building.

:01:14. > :01:14.The body of 43`year`old 0 0 building.

:01:15. > :01:17.The body of 43`year`old Kevin Gough was discovered behind an old

:01:18. > :01:23.fireplace at a solicitors in the city. It's thought he could have

:01:24. > :01:31.been there for weeks. James Roberson reports.

:01:32. > :01:38.On May one this year, this solicitors firm in Derby called in

:01:39. > :01:43.builders and pest control officers. Staff hadn't noticed an infestation

:01:44. > :01:47.of flies and a bad smell. When the builders broke through a bricked up

:01:48. > :01:53.fireplace, they found what appeared to be the decomposed body of a man.

:01:54. > :01:59.An inquest heard that the man was 43`year`old Kevin Gough from St

:02:00. > :02:06.Helens. He had arrived in Derby and within one day he was being hunted

:02:07. > :02:13.by police in connection with this `` a burglary. He left his DNA at the

:02:14. > :02:19.scene when he cut himself falling through a glass window. On the 15th

:02:20. > :02:24.of March he was last seen alive at a homeless centre. Then he vanished

:02:25. > :02:29.until he was discovered six weeks later at the solicitors. He got in

:02:30. > :02:38.by removing a chimney pot and wriggling down inside the building.

:02:39. > :02:42.He had become wedged heads downwards with the narrow chimney restricting

:02:43. > :02:47.his breathing. His T`shirt also cut across his throat and his other

:02:48. > :03:01.clothing block airflow up or down the chimney. As mother told the

:03:02. > :03:05.coroner that her son had formed her. A detective told the inquest that

:03:06. > :03:13.police would not find anyone else involved, and the coroner said he

:03:14. > :03:17.must have chosen to get into the chimney himself, not knowing the

:03:18. > :03:22.fireplace at the bottom was bricked up with no airflow and that such

:03:23. > :03:30.closed chimneys contained supplicating gases such as carbon

:03:31. > :03:34.monoxide. The coroner told the family that he hoped it was some

:03:35. > :03:40.small comfort to know that Kevin Gough would almost certainly have

:03:41. > :03:47.lost consciousness within some minutes and would not have been

:03:48. > :03:50.trapped for hours before dying. The death was recorded as by

:03:51. > :03:56.misadventure. And there's more on that story on

:03:57. > :03:59.our online news pages. At 11am today, the East Midlands

:04:00. > :04:04.fell silent to mark Armistice Day 1918, when the guns ceased firing in

:04:05. > :04:07.the First World War. Yesterday, on Remembrance Sunday,

:04:08. > :04:11.the dead of all armed conflicts were remembered in towns, villages and

:04:12. > :04:13.cities. Thoughts are now turning to next

:04:14. > :04:23.year when another significant milestone is marked ` 100 years

:04:24. > :04:34.since the outbreak of war in 1914. 95 years on and Armistice Day is

:04:35. > :04:38.marked in time`honoured tradition. On a grey, damp day, medals and

:04:39. > :04:39.poppies are a vivid reminder of the courage and sacrifice stop then

:04:40. > :05:07.silence. BUGLE PLAYS. This was Nottingham's

:05:08. > :05:11.old Market Square. I'm so proud. Similar scenes at the heart a's war

:05:12. > :05:18.memorial in the marketplace. And at Leicester Cathedral. Yesterday, in

:05:19. > :05:23.brighter weather, Remembrance Day services were held across the

:05:24. > :05:30.region. In Loughborough poppy petals were scattered as veterans looked

:05:31. > :05:33.on, seemingly lost in thought. Every anniversary is important but next

:05:34. > :05:43.year's will be special dash the centenary. The war was a catalyst

:05:44. > :05:50.for huge social change across Britain. Across the East Midlands, a

:05:51. > :05:56.massive programme is being planned. Nottinghamshire's is advanced. There

:05:57. > :06:01.was not a family or village untouched by this and people have

:06:02. > :06:08.forgotten that. We want to remind people and will do that with events

:06:09. > :06:17.at a local level in every single village. We will bring the war

:06:18. > :06:22.memorials to life. We hope that a lot of what we have will be of

:06:23. > :06:31.interest to a wider audience than just Nottinghamshire. It will be a

:06:32. > :06:40.fitting tribute to this out `` thousands of East Midlands who died.

:06:41. > :06:45.The Government is defending its decision to intervene in the running

:06:46. > :06:48.of a Muslim free school in Derby. The Al Madinah school has been

:06:49. > :06:52.described as dysfunctional and inadequate by Ofsted inspectors.

:06:53. > :06:55.It's been put into "special measures" by Ministers, with a

:06:56. > :06:59.warning it will be shut if standards don't improve. The Education

:07:00. > :07:07.Secretary, Michael Gove, told the Commons today that it was right for

:07:08. > :07:12.him to step in. Derby was one of the 20% weakest

:07:13. > :07:17.local authorities in the country and the Right Honourable lady said

:07:18. > :07:20.nothing about that. She turns a blind eye to failure on the part of

:07:21. > :07:25.Labour local authorities and when this government takes steps in order

:07:26. > :07:30.to improve state education, she has nothing to say.

:07:31. > :07:33.More than 230 people have been arrested as part of a crackdown on

:07:34. > :07:36.criminals by Leicestershire Police. Dubbed Operation Tiger, the force

:07:37. > :07:39.has been carrying out more patrols, forcing entry to suspects homes and

:07:40. > :07:44.tackling anti`social behaviour. Over the past two weeks, drugs and stolen

:07:45. > :07:48.property have also been seized. The police have called it a success. The

:07:49. > :07:52.operation will continue into next year.

:07:53. > :07:55.Concern is growing for a man who has gone missing from his home in

:07:56. > :07:58.Derbyshire. Scott Walker hasn't been seen since he left his house at

:07:59. > :08:04.Langley Mill for his journey to work on Thursday. He never arrived there.

:08:05. > :08:09.Police are appealing to him to get in touch and for any information on

:08:10. > :08:12.his whereabouts. Still to come tonight, we're inside

:08:13. > :08:24.the winning dressing room after the weekend's all`East Midlands

:08:25. > :08:28.footballing affair. And I'm in the East Midlands today

:08:29. > :08:30.dressing room, sheltering from the cold and rain. All the details

:08:31. > :08:40.later. A deal to rejuvenate shopping in

:08:41. > :08:44.Nottingham could be struck as soon as next week if councillors agree to

:08:45. > :08:49.put ?50 million of public money in the pot. That would trigger a

:08:50. > :08:52.redevelopment plan for the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre including

:08:53. > :09:02.more shops, cafes and a multiplex cinema. Our reporter Jo Healey's in

:09:03. > :09:11.Nottingham City centre now, picking over those plans.

:09:12. > :09:17.It was built in the 1970s and, let's face it, it is a bit tired and

:09:18. > :09:22.jaded. The City Council has wanted to do something about this place for

:09:23. > :09:26.years and it is almost exactly two years since Westfield pulled out of

:09:27. > :09:33.the deal. Now the council is more optimistic. What does it have in

:09:34. > :09:38.store? First of all, how much do shoppers reckon that Broadmarsh

:09:39. > :09:40.Shopping Centre needs a boost? It is outdated. 0 0

:09:41. > :09:50.Shopping Centre needs a boost? It is outdated. It is really sad and it

:09:51. > :10:00.needs decoration. Better shops. It is just a bunch of shops on one side

:10:01. > :10:04.and emptiness on the other. With new people coming in, it creates a

:10:05. > :10:11.better impression of the city. We've been waiting for years for something

:10:12. > :10:16.to be done. What sorts of changes are in the plan? It promises to be a

:10:17. > :10:24.bit of a cracker. Much more in the way of leisure. Multiplex cinema,

:10:25. > :10:30.cafes, restaurants, and a big investment in transport and car

:10:31. > :10:37.parking. ?21 million. Including a new tram stop. The City Council is

:10:38. > :10:44.set to contribute ?50 million in partnership with the Centre owners.

:10:45. > :10:47.It is tired and needs investment and it is not a great shopping

:10:48. > :10:55.experience for people. With the kind of investment that the City Council

:10:56. > :11:01.are looking to make, we will see a dramatic improvement. I think people

:11:02. > :11:07.will recognise a sharp uplift in the quality of the city centre. That

:11:08. > :11:11.will be helped by another part of the deal which will eventually

:11:12. > :11:18.revamp Nottingham's Victoria shopping centre nearby. So, lots

:11:19. > :11:22.going on here. Next week, the executive board of the City Council

:11:23. > :11:26.will meet and be asked to agree the ?50 million contribution. If so,

:11:27. > :11:29.work could start in 0 ?50 million contribution. If so,

:11:30. > :11:29.work could start in 2015 0 ?50 million contribution. If so,

:11:30. > :11:40.work could start in 2015 and finish by 2017. Four years' time.

:11:41. > :11:43.Radio Nottingham's breakfast show with Andy Whittaker will be

:11:44. > :11:47.exploring the story further ` that's just after 7am.

:11:48. > :11:50.Police officers looking for a GP from Beeston who's gone missing say

:11:51. > :11:55.they've had another possible sighting of her. Elizabeth Kinston,

:11:56. > :11:59.37, is thought to have been seen outside a supermarket in The Meadows

:12:00. > :12:09.on the day she went missing ten days ago. The police are appealing for

:12:10. > :12:13.good Samaritans who may have helped her to come forward.

:12:14. > :12:16.The reburial of King Richard III's bones in Leicester's Cathedral looks

:12:17. > :12:20.likely to be delayed. The Cathedral Fabric Commission says it needs

:12:21. > :12:23.longer to consider the impact of the new tomb on the rest of the

:12:24. > :12:26.building. Officials want more information on key aspects of the

:12:27. > :12:30.scheme and say this will take at least six months.

:12:31. > :12:33.A Derbyshire building company has paid ?2.7 million in compensation to

:12:34. > :12:39.the driver of a crane which collapsed in Liverpool city centre.

:12:40. > :12:42.Bowmer and Kirkland, along with an engineering firm, paid the

:12:43. > :12:46.compensation to Iain Gillham after the accident left him paralysed. The

:12:47. > :12:52.crane collapsed on apartment buildings in July 2009. Iain

:12:53. > :13:00.remembers nothing about the accident. Bowmer and Kirkland won't

:13:01. > :13:04.comment. Bodily functions which you no longer

:13:05. > :13:10.control and cannot deal with. You require carers to help. That means

:13:11. > :13:18.you have to have carers. That is probably the worst. Worse than not

:13:19. > :13:30.being able to walk. Having to deal with what I have two deal with no,

:13:31. > :13:35.`` now. There's no point in looking for revenge.

:13:36. > :13:38.Now if you're wondering where's the best place to raise your family, new

:13:39. > :13:41.research suggests the answer could be close at hand. One

:13:42. > :13:44.Nottinghamshire town has come top of the class when it comes to things

:13:45. > :13:47.like schools and property prices. So where is it? It's Bingham in

:13:48. > :13:48.Nottinghamshire and Sarah Teale has spent the day there 0

:13:49. > :13:55.Nottinghamshire and Sarah Teale has spent the day there to find out what

:13:56. > :14:03.makes it so special. Marketplace Bingham, 11 o'clock.

:14:04. > :14:06.Locals here are proud that the place they call home is the best in the

:14:07. > :14:13.country for raising a family. The report found it had three excellent

:14:14. > :14:20.schools, a low crime rate, lots of social clubs and activities, good

:14:21. > :14:26.shops and affordable housing. It's a great place to live. It is

:14:27. > :14:35.brilliant. There is a lot to do and great facilities and shops. It is a

:14:36. > :14:40.nice atmosphere. More families can come here because Bingham is

:14:41. > :14:44.expanding. Several hundred new homes have been built on the outskirts and

:14:45. > :14:49.plans for another major housing development have been agreed. That

:14:50. > :14:55.will see around 1000 new homes built here along with a primary school and

:14:56. > :15:03.other facilities. The average cost of a two bedroom house is pretty

:15:04. > :15:10.reasonable as well. Around ?140,000. That is cheaper than the national

:15:11. > :15:14.average. Bingham grabs you. It's a market town but feels like a

:15:15. > :15:21.village. If you have your children in schools here, they are

:15:22. > :15:29.outstanding skills. So, you will move from three bedroom 24`bedroom

:15:30. > :15:35.and eventually bungalows. But not everything is perfect. A lack of

:15:36. > :15:44.parking is an issue. And Bingham has had to defend itself from critics.

:15:45. > :15:49.Last year, a family moved away when they were the victims of an

:15:50. > :15:56.anti`Islam attack. We were victims of racist abuse. The only people

:15:57. > :16:04.that supported those were our neighbours and the local reverent.

:16:05. > :16:11.No one else, not the council. I believe it was an isolated incident

:16:12. > :16:16.and a great shame. It is a great place to bring up a family. That is

:16:17. > :16:23.something they are proud to shout about.

:16:24. > :16:25.Now, the sport. First, Leicester City and Nottingham

:16:26. > :16:29.Forest go into the international break in great shape as they push

:16:30. > :16:33.for promotion, but it was Forest who came out on top, against the form

:16:34. > :16:36.book, in the all`East Midlands match at the King Power Stadium on

:16:37. > :16:48.Saturday. We promised you a cracker and the team's delivered. Natalie

:16:49. > :16:52.Jackson was there. Leicester City and Nottingham Forest

:16:53. > :16:58.are on the promotion march, both banging the drum in the top of the

:16:59. > :17:05.table. That's 30,000 down here today. One of the lucky few to get a

:17:06. > :17:16.ticket. I think it will be quite boisterous today. Just keeping my

:17:17. > :17:25.fingers crossed. It's not just about rivalry but remembrance. A special

:17:26. > :17:36.fixture for an East Midlands derby. BUGLE PLAYS.

:17:37. > :17:46.Nottingham Forest haven't won for eight years at Leicester City but it

:17:47. > :17:49.could have been a different story. Leicester City had a number of

:17:50. > :18:01.chances but it was Nottingham Forest who take there. There was a reward

:18:02. > :18:09.for hard work with this second goal. It was unlike him but striker David

:18:10. > :18:15.Nugent missed a penalty saw in the end it finished 2`0. Nottingham

:18:16. > :18:26.Forest close the gap by six points and become in the first six. I don't

:18:27. > :18:37.like losing local derbies but we'll have to move on. Never try and put

:18:38. > :18:43.these players done. The togetherness amongst the staff and the rest of

:18:44. > :18:49.the people is absolutely top`class and that's what you showed outside.

:18:50. > :19:00.You showed the spirit of this football club. Well done.

:19:01. > :19:03.At Derby County, they've found their new Director of Football Operations

:19:04. > :19:06.` the man who'll work alongside coach Steve McClaren. He's Chris

:19:07. > :19:06.Evans ` the former Sheffield Wednesday 0

:19:07. > :19:08.Evans ` the former Sheffield Wednesday assistant manager. He's

:19:09. > :19:11.spent the last year as a widely`travelled scout and will look

:19:12. > :19:16.after Derby's scouting network, as well as dealing with agents.

:19:17. > :19:19.Evans will have a good impression of what Derby already have ` he was

:19:20. > :19:28.there to watch them demolish his former club at the weekend.

:19:29. > :19:38.Against Sheffield Wednesday Derby put in a performance that leads you

:19:39. > :19:43.bouncing out of the stadium. We gave the five forward players the freedom

:19:44. > :19:45.to go and express themselves. A host of early chances meant there

:19:46. > :20:28.visitors were on the back foot. A proper confidence boost. How far

:20:29. > :20:40.can the Rams go? What a great team. What football. We have to be

:20:41. > :20:46.consistent. If it carries on like this, the drinks should definitely

:20:47. > :20:49.be on Steve McClaren. In the FA Cup, Mansfield's reward

:20:50. > :20:52.for first`round victory is an attractive second`round trip to

:20:53. > :20:55.either Oldham or Wolves. They were the only one of our clubs to get

:20:56. > :20:58.past Saturday's test. Jessica Creighton starts our round`up at St.

:20:59. > :21:03.Albans City. Mansfield may have thought they were

:21:04. > :21:09.at risk of a giant`killing at St Albans but their resistance broke

:21:10. > :21:13.just at half`time. Two quick goals set them on their way. Once they

:21:14. > :21:19.started rolling over their opponents, there was no stopping

:21:20. > :21:33.them. The FA Cup provided Nottingham's

:21:34. > :21:45.first game. Last year, Alfreton beat Wrexham at

:21:46. > :21:53.this stage in the competition. This time, the Welsh side got ahead and

:21:54. > :21:57.never let it slip. This penalty was the only thing that offered anything

:21:58. > :21:59.to Alfreton. In ice hockey, an injury`hit

:22:00. > :22:03.Nottingham Panthers had a really disappointing road trip to Scotland.

:22:04. > :22:06.Beaten 4`2 in Fife on Saturday, and then on penalty shots in Edinburgh

:22:07. > :22:09.last night. On the bright side for them, Sunday's visit from Sheffield

:22:10. > :22:12.is already almost sold out. Get your tickets fast.

:22:13. > :22:15.And just to round up the rest quickly, in case you missed it,

:22:16. > :22:18.Leicester Tigers were victorious in the LV Cup on Friday. Then over the

:22:19. > :22:21.weekend Nottingham Rugby lost at Moseley but basketball's Leicester

:22:22. > :22:23.Riders continued winning and still top the table.

:22:24. > :22:27.And finally from me, Derby's new on`loan defender Andre Wisdom might

:22:28. > :22:30.know his way round a back four but hasn't quite mastered the route to

:22:31. > :22:34.Pride Park and this is the result. That's a very expensive car in a

:22:35. > :22:38.very deep, wet hole after Wisdom's SatNav took him up a terrible track

:22:39. > :22:42.on the way to Saturday's game. I imagine he's taken some fair old

:22:43. > :22:52.stick for this. And I dread to think of the bill. At least he is playing

:22:53. > :22:55.well. We've been waiting for a very

:22:56. > :22:59.special guest to join us on the programme this evening. In fact he's

:23:00. > :23:03.so important that Anne has gone to the reception area here at the BBC

:23:04. > :23:13.to meet him. Anne, what's happening? Not a lot at the moment. No prizes

:23:14. > :23:18.for guessing who the guest is ` yes, a big, yellow bear called Pudsey.

:23:19. > :23:21.And here he is, just in time. Well, the final countdown begins

:23:22. > :23:25.here. Children In Need 2013 is on Friday. More than ever, we want you

:23:26. > :23:28.to get involved on behalf of children and young people in the

:23:29. > :23:34.East Midlands who, for whatever reason, need a helping hand. We'll

:23:35. > :23:38.be at Nottingham Tennis Centre on Friday night ` that promises to be a

:23:39. > :23:42.fabulous and worthwhile evening. And through the rest of the week we'll

:23:43. > :23:45.be seeing what kind of work the money you raise pays for. First

:23:46. > :23:49.let's just take a look at the numbers involved. Last year, you

:23:50. > :23:55.raised more than ?1 million here in the East Midlands ` nearly ?1.1

:23:56. > :23:58.million, in fact. A fantastic total, up on the year before. It's an

:23:59. > :24:01.achievement that allows Children In Need this year to be helping 136

:24:02. > :24:05.projects across the East Midlands, which currently have grants to a

:24:06. > :24:16.value of ?6 million. And people are already collecting money ahead of

:24:17. > :24:19.the big night on Friday. We are trying to raise ?1 million which

:24:20. > :24:27.would be a massive achievement. Today, we are riding a rickshaw

:24:28. > :24:30.around Nottingham city centre. Charnwood 20:20 got nearly ?87,000

:24:31. > :24:33.for a scheme that helps teenage girls at risk in Loughborough And

:24:34. > :24:36.this project ` The Nottingham Photographers' Hub ` was given
