:00:00. > 3:59:59week with snow mainly in the north. That's all from the BBC News at Six

:00:00. > :00:07.so it's This is East Midlands Today with

:00:08. > :00:10.Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale. Tonight ` rice, flour and fervent

:00:11. > :00:22.prayers for the victims of the Philippines typhoon. Members of the

:00:23. > :00:27.Filipino community rushed to send aid to families at home. It is

:00:28. > :00:35.heartbreaking to see the Filipinos being affected by this. Also, a

:00:36. > :00:40.campaign confronting domestic violence backed by a mother whose

:00:41. > :00:49.daughter was killed. Abuse against your partner, girlfriend, is not

:00:50. > :00:52.cool. It is not acceptable. From tap and ballet to T`shirts. The

:00:53. > :01:01.investors helping less promising business ideas take off.

:01:02. > :01:05.And Danny survives meningitis to take part in the Children in Need

:01:06. > :01:17.rickshaw. Look at me, I can do it! Good evening and welcome to the

:01:18. > :01:21.programme. First tonight, the burial of the dead has begun and the

:01:22. > :01:26.clear`up is underway. But for many with relatives in the Philippines,

:01:27. > :01:28.the wait goes on. Among them a Leicestershire man facing an

:01:29. > :01:32.agonising delay in hearing from his wife. Filipino communities here in

:01:33. > :01:35.the East Midlands are doing all they can to help the aid effort following

:01:36. > :01:45.the typhoon. To tell us more, Rebecca Sheeran is in Leicester

:01:46. > :01:51.tonight. Good evening, I am at the Filipino

:01:52. > :01:56.express, a shop in Leicester but this is the heart of the community

:01:57. > :02:00.which has pulled together in such tragic circumstances. People are

:02:01. > :02:05.donating clothes and food which will be sent to those who need it. The

:02:06. > :02:09.tragedy has affected people across the East Midlands and our reporter

:02:10. > :02:16.has been talking to some of those families. They only married six

:02:17. > :02:22.weeks ago and was speaking on line as the typhoon struck. Since then,

:02:23. > :02:29.nothing. Andrew's daughter has been helping him at their home to try to

:02:30. > :02:35.find news. We don't know what to do. I am doing everything I can to keep

:02:36. > :02:44.in touch with her but as soon as you get in touch, we will be together

:02:45. > :02:46.quickly after that. The anxiety of relatives has only been heightened

:02:47. > :02:47.by images like these 0 relatives has only been heightened

:02:48. > :02:53.by images like these of the aftermath of the storm. Every day,

:02:54. > :03:02.you see the news, you can't bear to watch it. The people who lost their

:03:03. > :03:12.families, they are crying out for food. It is heartbreaking to see the

:03:13. > :03:16.Filipinos being affected by this. The Filipino community is being

:03:17. > :03:22.helped by others to raise aid for those in need. Today, they collected

:03:23. > :03:29.food from this cash and carry. It is just unbelievable. Family have come

:03:30. > :03:35.together, the community have come together and this is the support we

:03:36. > :03:41.get. It is tremendous. Many came to work as nurses and carers like

:03:42. > :03:48.Francis, her family are OK but now provide shelter to others less

:03:49. > :03:55.fortunate. The house was flattened by the typhoon. They are living at

:03:56. > :04:00.my mums house. They are living with what they have. A reality brought

:04:01. > :04:02.home by pictures on the internet. Now, Andrew hopes social media will

:04:03. > :04:16.help him to contact his wife. Well, you heard how important the

:04:17. > :04:23.supplies will be to those in the Philippines. Joining me is someone

:04:24. > :04:30.from the Leicestershire Filipino society. What do you need? People

:04:31. > :04:36.donated clothing, shoes, food, canned goods, noodles, dry stuff. We

:04:37. > :04:42.urge everybody to donate what they can in terms of clothing,

:04:43. > :04:51.medication, paracetamol, sanitation stuff, detergent and especially

:04:52. > :04:56.canned goods. How important are the supplies to getting to those people?

:04:57. > :05:01.Very important because as you can see it is six days since the tragedy

:05:02. > :05:08.happened and people are hungry, very hungry. There is no food, everything

:05:09. > :05:17.is devastated. There is no food so it's important we give what we can

:05:18. > :05:22.so people can eat and have clothing for survival. Thank you. Everybody

:05:23. > :05:26.here busy trying to get supplies ready, they are asking for people to

:05:27. > :05:30.come forward with donations and they hope this will reach those who

:05:31. > :05:36.really need it next week. Let's hope there is a big response. More

:05:37. > :05:39.protests against council budget cuts and job losses. Up to 800 jobs could

:05:40. > :05:42.go at Nottinghamshire County Council. It's looking for savings of

:05:43. > :05:45.?154 million over three years. It's led to a bitter political row.

:05:46. > :05:48.Labour blames government cuts. The Tories are branding the budget

:05:49. > :06:00.proposals "incompetent and vindictive". Simon Ward reports.

:06:01. > :06:06.They gathered to make their voices heard. All councils are having

:06:07. > :06:08.budgets cut 0 heard. All councils are having

:06:09. > :06:14.budgets cut but these protesters say nothing she is being hit too hard.

:06:15. > :06:19.Inside the chamber, the budget savings proposals are debated, this

:06:20. > :06:22.is raw politics. The lines are drawn between Labour and the

:06:23. > :06:23.Conservatives. The council leader says he cannot 0

:06:24. > :06:27.Conservatives. The council leader says he cannot say which people will

:06:28. > :06:30.lose their jobs. Every area of activity across the council will be

:06:31. > :06:38.affected. That could be children's services, adult and youth services,

:06:39. > :06:43.it could be libraries. That is unavoidable given the severe

:06:44. > :06:48.financial constraints we face. What is the point of being a Labour

:06:49. > :06:53.councillor? Budget reductions have to be made but if the Conservatives

:06:54. > :06:59.were still leading, what would they do? We need large companies to run

:07:00. > :07:03.the business parts, they are not front`line services, the business

:07:04. > :07:09.parts, other councils have done that. Beverley works in the library

:07:10. > :07:13.service, she has been told her job is under threat. Getting communities

:07:14. > :07:17.to run their own libraries, they will not have the expertise, it will

:07:18. > :07:27.suffer. It is putting responsibility on communities to do that. And in

:07:28. > :07:31.the end, I can see it closing. The cuts are ideological and

:07:32. > :07:37.unnecessary. There is the money there but the political will is that

:07:38. > :07:44.they have other priorities. Council tax is due to increase by 2%, a new

:07:45. > :07:49.round of consultations started today and people in the county are

:07:50. > :07:52.encouraged to give their views. Still to come ` in sport. An

:07:53. > :07:56.emotional night on the ice. Yes, there were tears at the

:07:57. > :08:05.testimonial for David Clarke ` one of the best players in British Ice

:08:06. > :08:07.Hockey. I lost a few man points from the boys and the supporters. It was

:08:08. > :08:16.an emotional night. Three people have been held by

:08:17. > :08:20.police over a fatal shooting in Arnold. The body of a man was found

:08:21. > :08:23.at a house in Laneham Avenue on Monday evening. Two men, aged 29 and

:08:24. > :08:26.22, were arrested this morning on suspicion of murder. A 49`year`old

:08:27. > :08:31.man arrested yesterday is also in police custody.

:08:32. > :08:35.Police are investigating a report of fraud linked to over ?13 million

:08:36. > :08:40.worth of repairs to council homes in Leicester. A man has been arrested

:08:41. > :08:43.as part of the investigation into Leicester City Council contracts

:08:44. > :08:45.between 2007 and 2011. A number of other people have also been

:08:46. > :08:48.interviewed as part of the investigation. Details of the

:08:49. > :08:50.council's internal inquiry were revealed when, by mistake, it

:08:51. > :09:05.published online a report by its corporate counter`fraud team.

:09:06. > :09:11.A mother whose daughter was beaten to death by an ex`partner is

:09:12. > :09:15.battling a new approach to domestic violence. Two women are killed every

:09:16. > :09:20.week by their partner or X. A study is calling for young people at risk

:09:21. > :09:23.of becoming abusers to be mental ward. In Nottingham, they have

:09:24. > :09:33.discovered a different way of getting the message across.

:09:34. > :09:45.Wrapping against violent against women. Casey was beaten to death by

:09:46. > :09:51.her ex`partner in Nottingham. This message is music to her mum's is. If

:09:52. > :09:56.it appeals to young people, it is fantastic. It is saying to them,

:09:57. > :10:03.abuse against your partner, girlfriend, is not cool. It is not

:10:04. > :10:08.acceptable. If you can save one person from going through that, then

:10:09. > :10:14.you have done something good. It was recorded to show in schools, the

:10:15. > :10:18.national release coincides with a major study. Experts at Manchester

:10:19. > :10:25.University questioned a number of young people at risk of becoming

:10:26. > :10:29.abusers, they talked over a thousand 13 and 14`year`olds and a quarter of

:10:30. > :10:37.them had already abused a girlfriend or boyfriend. The study found that

:10:38. > :10:44.are already 16, 17 and 18`year`old men committing lethal and repeated

:10:45. > :10:50.acts of domestic violence. The researchers want young people mental

:10:51. > :10:57.ward but accept it costs. This is a way of reaching them. It was never

:10:58. > :11:03.intended to... It is working so we have tapped into something that is

:11:04. > :11:19.positive. It is released this month. It is so important that the message

:11:20. > :11:22.like this is out there. Next ` a new army of volunteers being trained to

:11:23. > :11:24.look after their local communities. Villagers in Nottinghamshire are

:11:25. > :11:27.being asked to help protect nearby homes and businesses from flooding.

:11:28. > :11:30.But its not just about co`ordinating sand`bags ` these flood wardens will

:11:31. > :11:35.have much greater powers. Carolyn Moses reports.

:11:36. > :11:41.A scene which is familiar to many. Rivers running onto roads and roads

:11:42. > :11:46.becoming rivers. This is set in the bottom of a valet, when it floods,

:11:47. > :11:54.it floods and what makes it worse isn't just the water, it is the

:11:55. > :11:59.traffic. The Post Office has been flooded seven times in 18 months. He

:12:00. > :12:04.has raised stock off the floor but he says what goes by in the floods

:12:05. > :12:10.can make life worse. People with 4x4 is think their vehicle can go

:12:11. > :12:16.through anywhere. What they don't realise is the way they create

:12:17. > :12:20.dashed the wafer goes over flood defences. Even travelling ten miles

:12:21. > :12:30.an hour, you create a wave of a foot high. That creates its own problems.

:12:31. > :12:35.The problem`solving is part of a response team being trained to react

:12:36. > :12:40.and keep cars away. We are local people, local knowledge and we can

:12:41. > :12:44.respond quickly. We have permission and a legal right to close the road

:12:45. > :12:50.and we will do that. If you are looking at widespread flooding, it

:12:51. > :12:54.is logistically difficult to get the support out from places around the

:12:55. > :12:59.county. So, the advantage of the scheme is to have those in place,

:13:00. > :13:04.local people with local knowledge who can act. The idea is going down

:13:05. > :13:08.river. The council wants to train more wardens. They may not stop the

:13:09. > :13:21.water coming, but the hope is they will stop things making it worse. A

:13:22. > :13:24.group of investors are taking a chance and backing passionate ideas

:13:25. > :13:24.that can't get financial backing from 0

:13:25. > :13:26.that can't get financial backing from the banks.

:13:27. > :13:29.They finance and mentor entrepreneurs from the East Midands,

:13:30. > :13:32.through a scheme called "Street Startup". It's already helping one

:13:33. > :13:43.man who used to be homeless, and a former ballerina. Our Social Affairs

:13:44. > :13:47.Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, reports. Vince is so proud of being mixed

:13:48. > :13:53.race he turned it into a fashion label, a Jamaican flag and union

:13:54. > :13:58.Jack. He started selling T`shirts on the streets when he was homeless in

:13:59. > :14:02.Derby. He turned it into a successful business and it wasn't

:14:03. > :14:08.easy. Ten years ago I dream about getting an investor. It was

:14:09. > :14:14.difficult. I did not know how I would take it to the next level. I

:14:15. > :14:18.did not have a shop, premises or backing or investing. All I had was

:14:19. > :14:24.a bag of T`shirts. The world would be a better place if we embrace the

:14:25. > :14:30.issue. He is now getting professional help and he is an

:14:31. > :14:40.executive taking advantage of tax breaks. He has persuaded Vince to go

:14:41. > :14:47.for a global market and to attract more customers. Vince is thinking

:14:48. > :14:52.big, focusing on quality, it could make a lot of money. Vince is very

:14:53. > :14:56.very passionate and I think unless you really believe in the business

:14:57. > :15:02.without passion, I do not think you can invest. Business has a bad

:15:03. > :15:10.reputation, an element of putting some of that back into the East

:15:11. > :15:14.Midlands. The first start`up investment helped pay for this

:15:15. > :15:20.performing arts centre, it was set by Carmen who used to be a

:15:21. > :15:28.professional dancer. If we do not have the money, the banks would not

:15:29. > :15:30.lend. They will not lend, start`ups. It has helped us to renovate the

:15:31. > :15:34.building, secure the 0 It has helped us to renovate the

:15:35. > :15:41.building, secure the lease, equipped facilities, state`of`the`art. The

:15:42. > :15:46.results have been dramatic. More than 100 young people are using this

:15:47. > :15:47.start`up business venture, a new facility that is music to their

:15:48. > :15:57.ears. 0 ears.

:15:58. > :16:01.Fantastic. We wish them the best. And, we have been inundated with

:16:02. > :16:02.offers of help from you after we aired a story yesterday about a

:16:03. > :16:04.94`year`old war 0 aired a story yesterday about a

:16:05. > :16:07.94`year`old war veteran who was the victim a distraction burglary. After

:16:08. > :16:10.the theft, Bernard Whittaker from Leicester said he was worried he

:16:11. > :16:13.wouldn't have enough money to pay for his carer. Bernard, who was a

:16:14. > :16:17.Japanese prisoner of war, is registered blind. We'd like to thank

:16:18. > :16:30.everyone who's got in touch with us offering to help him.

:16:31. > :16:35.First, there were tears, applause and thousands of fans at a moving

:16:36. > :16:39.testimonial last night. They turned out to honour one of the best

:16:40. > :16:42.British ice hockey players of all time. David Clarke is captain of

:16:43. > :16:45.Nottingham Panthers and joined the club 11 years ago but this year he's

:16:46. > :16:53.celebrating ten seasons with the Panthers. 0

:16:54. > :17:01.They flew in from all over the world. It is going to be a great

:17:02. > :17:06.night. Some of the biggest names in world ice hockey. We are happy to

:17:07. > :17:11.come 0 world ice hockey. We are happy to

:17:12. > :17:20.come back. They are here for David Clarke, the fans say he is more than

:17:21. > :17:27.just an ice hockey player. He came to the hospital to see me. He was

:17:28. > :17:38.marvellous. He really was. Marvellous. A superstar. A cracking

:17:39. > :17:38.player. Long may he be here. Amazing. 0

:17:39. > :17:46.player. Long may he be here. Amazing. If I was younger, I would

:17:47. > :17:53.go for him. Now 32, he has played for the Panthers for ten years. I am

:17:54. > :18:02.really nervous. I can't wait to get out there. He is a solid solid guy.

:18:03. > :18:10.If you need anything, he is there. 3000 fans turned out on a cold

:18:11. > :18:15.Tuesday night for his testimonial. He is a good person. He is one of

:18:16. > :18:20.those men who inspire you to be a better person. That is the best

:18:21. > :18:24.compliment I can give him. He has done everything I have tried to do.

:18:25. > :18:27.An 0 done everything I have tried to do.

:18:28. > :18:42.An all`star side from the past be the current Panthers team, 19`12.

:18:43. > :18:50.I lost a fume and points tonight amongst the boys and supporters. I

:18:51. > :18:56.wasn't intending on crying but was emotional. Nice to show my

:18:57. > :19:01.appreciation to them. He has helped make the Panthers the best team in

:19:02. > :19:06.British ice hockey. But for once, it wasn't about the sport, it was a

:19:07. > :19:12.thank you to a player who is a class act on and off the ice. He isn't

:19:13. > :19:15.retiring by the way and will be around at Panthers for a good few

:19:16. > :19:19.years to come. Onto cricket and big news out of

:19:20. > :19:22.Nottinghamshire today. The club have signed Australian fast bowler Peter

:19:23. > :19:27.Siddle as their overseas player for the 2014 season.

:19:28. > :19:28.Football and Notts County manager Shaun Derry 0

:19:29. > :19:32.Football and Notts County manager Shaun Derry says he doesn't want his

:19:33. > :19:36.players "hiding" during matches. Derry was incensed by the display at

:19:37. > :19:40.Oldham last night in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. The Magpies were

:19:41. > :19:43.thrashed 5`1. It was only his second game in charge. Derry described the

:19:44. > :19:47.defeat as unacceptable and apologised to the one hundred and

:19:48. > :19:54.forty six fans who made the journey to Boundary Park.

:19:55. > :19:57.Motorsport and Derby's British Superbike Champion Alex Lowes will

:19:58. > :19:59.make the step up to the world stage next season. He'll race 0

:20:00. > :20:01.make the step up to the world stage next season. He'll race for the

:20:02. > :20:04.Crescent Suzuki team in World Superbikes, following his dramatic

:20:05. > :20:11.title win at Brands Hatch last month.

:20:12. > :20:16.Time now to meet our second finalists in our search for BBC East

:20:17. > :20:22.Midlands Sports Unsung Hero 2013. Monica and Sean White both have full

:20:23. > :20:24.time jobs. But evenings and weekends they devote themselves to

:20:25. > :20:28.trampolining and gymnastics. They've been doing it for thirty years ` and

:20:29. > :20:39.still have a spring in their step. As Mark Shardlow reports.

:20:40. > :20:49.Trampolining is exciting for the kids. They learn things easily. It

:20:50. > :20:54.is not as hard as gymnastics. The 29 years, Monica and Sean have given

:20:55. > :20:58.their time to coach trampolining. It is something I have done for years.

:20:59. > :21:03.I enjoy coaching them. I enjoy seeing them learn things. Does that

:21:04. > :21:11.make it easier question they spent 30 hours a week organising the club.

:21:12. > :21:17.I enjoy doing new moves. It feels like you are flying. I like doing

:21:18. > :21:22.somersaults. Hundreds of children have come through the club, enjoy

:21:23. > :21:25.the physical and social side of sport. They are nice and have helped

:21:26. > :21:32.me get through the levels of trampolining. They do everything for

:21:33. > :21:32.the kids. Coaching, setting up early, they 0

:21:33. > :21:32.the kids. Coaching, setting up early, they help pack 0

:21:33. > :21:39.the kids. Coaching, setting up early, they help pack away. Loads of

:21:40. > :21:45.Christmas parties and stuff, things outside training. This is their

:21:46. > :21:49.legacy, their son who is a coach at the club himself. They have been

:21:50. > :21:56.doing it since before I was born. I grew up with the club and they were

:21:57. > :22:02.coaching me for 20 years. Without these people, there would not be the

:22:03. > :22:08.clubs and provision there is. They get involved in the club and also

:22:09. > :22:15.gymnastics and the county and they help out in other events by going to

:22:16. > :22:16.judge in competitions. It is fantastic to get into the final and

:22:17. > :22:21.be nominated. The things 0 fantastic to get into the final and

:22:22. > :22:27.be nominated. The things that have been said about us is fantastic. It

:22:28. > :22:31.motivates us even more to want to do it because people feel this way

:22:32. > :22:34.about what we are doing. That's Monica and Sean White, from the

:22:35. > :22:38.Phoenix Trampoline Club near Ilkeston ` our second finalists.

:22:39. > :22:50.We're taking to the water tomorrow ` for our third and final unsung hero.

:22:51. > :22:54.I can't believe it is that time of year again. Well, it is of course

:22:55. > :22:58.BBC Children In Need week and now we take another look at how the money

:22:59. > :23:01.raised makes a real difference to the lives of children and young

:23:02. > :23:03.people. Umbrella is a project in Derbyshire that allows youngsters

:23:04. > :23:06.with physical or learning difficulties to enjoy a social life.

:23:07. > :23:10.One rather special member is Daniel. He joined the group after surviving
