:00:00. > :00:08.Commonwealth Summit in Sri Lanka. That is all from the BBC

:00:09. > :00:18.This is East Midlands Today. Tonight ` a Government minister says we'll

:00:19. > :00:22.learn to love High Speed rail. Lord Deayton ran the London Olympics and

:00:23. > :00:28.claims there are similarities. I was confronted by the same kind of

:00:29. > :00:30.cynicism. By the time it got to the games, everyone was completely

:00:31. > :00:37.engaged, saw what was in it for them.

:00:38. > :00:40.A chance underground at Nottinghamshire's remaining coal

:00:41. > :00:47.mine. Willie have to dig deeper to find a solution to energy bills?

:00:48. > :00:52.Research to mend broken bones is being used to treat brain tumours.

:00:53. > :00:56.Thousands of ways to raise thousands for Pudsey. All the excitement of

:00:57. > :01:13.Children in Need. A very good evening. Welcome to

:01:14. > :01:16.Friday's programme. I'm on my own tonight ` because as you've probably

:01:17. > :01:24.guessed, Anne's out on Pudsey patrol, getting ready for a mega

:01:25. > :01:30.night of fund`raising. Hello, Anne! Hello. Yes we are indeed, we had at

:01:31. > :01:34.the Nottingham tennis Centre to celebrate Children in Need. It is a

:01:35. > :01:39.charity which relies on your help to change the lives of young people and

:01:40. > :01:44.children. You do just that. We will need some of the people who benefit

:01:45. > :01:48.from the money you raise and many of the people who read that money. We

:01:49. > :01:53.have all sorts going on tonight, lots of fancy dress, face painting

:01:54. > :01:56.and lots of you coming down to join in to make it the best Children in

:01:57. > :02:01.Need ever. Thank you. More from Anne later. But first, a

:02:02. > :02:04.government minister claims HS2 is facing the same kind of cynicism

:02:05. > :02:11.that blighted the build`up to the London Olympics. Lord Deighton ` who

:02:12. > :02:14.ran the games ` now has a high`profile role with high speed

:02:15. > :02:17.rail. He was speaking as plans for the route went on show in this

:02:18. > :02:23.region's first ever public consultation event. Mike O'Sullivan

:02:24. > :02:30.reports. He is the former Olympics boss is trying to turn the ?50

:02:31. > :02:34.billion HS2 project into a one. Head of the games organisation for seven

:02:35. > :02:42.years, Lord Deighton is no cheer of the HS2 group task force, looking to

:02:43. > :02:50.maximise potential benefits. `` he is the chairman. He admits both

:02:51. > :02:54.projects shared similar problems. I was confronted by precisely the same

:02:55. > :02:59.kind of cynicism, will it be worth it, what is in it for us? By the

:03:00. > :03:03.demigod the games, everyone was completely engaged and saw what was

:03:04. > :03:08.in it for them. It was a great thing to have done. I take heart from

:03:09. > :03:15.hoping we can go through the same experience. The HS2 station for the

:03:16. > :03:22.East Midlands is planned for between Derby and the `` Nottingham. The

:03:23. > :03:25.road show made the first of seven public consultation calls to a

:03:26. > :03:31.region today. We are concerned about the environmental impact and road

:03:32. > :03:36.congestion. We have lots of issues in terms of road congestion because

:03:37. > :03:40.of tram developments and this will make it worse. The infrastructure

:03:41. > :03:46.cannot sustain the population which is the air at the moment. Back at

:03:47. > :03:50.Loughborough University is that `` researchers have no doubt about the

:03:51. > :03:55.value of HS2. As an engineer it is good because there will be job

:03:56. > :03:59.opportunities and it helps build the infrastructure. I think it is a

:04:00. > :04:07.brilliant idea. The country needs it. The public consultation period

:04:08. > :04:11.ends in January. If the task force `` the task force is to release a

:04:12. > :04:15.report soon after. Next, the daughter and son`in`law of

:04:16. > :04:18.an elderly couple found buried in their back garden in Mansfield have

:04:19. > :04:23.appeared in court again today. Susan and Christopher Edwards are jointly

:04:24. > :04:31.charged with two counts of murder. Sarah Teale was in court.

:04:32. > :04:35.This was daughter of Susan Edwards and her husband Christopher on their

:04:36. > :04:41.first court appearance, charged with the murders of her appearance in May

:04:42. > :04:46.1998. The elderly couple, William and Patricia Wycherley, lived at

:04:47. > :04:51.this house in the Forest town area of Mansfield for years before

:04:52. > :04:55.disappearing in the late 1990s. Neighbours believed they had

:04:56. > :04:58.emigrated. Following a tip`off last month, police discovered what is

:04:59. > :05:05.believed to be there remains, buried in the back garden. Postmortems

:05:06. > :05:09.revealed they had both been shot. Susan Edwards who is 55, and

:05:10. > :05:14.Christopher Edwards who is 57, were later arrested at the impact was

:05:15. > :05:18.train station. They were charged with murder. They appeared at

:05:19. > :05:24.Nottingham Crown Court today for a brief preliminary hearing. The only

:05:25. > :05:29.spoke to confirm their names. They stood next to each other in the dock

:05:30. > :05:35.while dates were arranged for their case. They will next appear before

:05:36. > :05:40.the court on December 23. They are expected to enter pleas then and

:05:41. > :05:54.until then the R.N. Reminded custody. `` until then they are in a

:05:55. > :05:57.romance. `` remand. Nottinghamshire police say that the

:05:58. > :06:01.body of a woman found in Nottingham is believed to be that of the

:06:02. > :06:03.missing GP, Elizabeth Kinston. Police officers searching for the

:06:04. > :06:06.missing mother`of`two, made the discovery yesterday on grassland in

:06:07. > :06:09.the Dunkirk area of the city. A postmortem examination took place

:06:10. > :06:12.this morning, but the full results are expected to take several weeks.

:06:13. > :06:14.The death is not being treated as suspicious.

:06:15. > :06:17.The jury, deciding if a Loughborough teenager prepared a terrorist

:06:18. > :06:24.attack, has been sent home for the weekend. The 17`year`old has

:06:25. > :06:27.admitted possessing explosives. But he's denied plotting to use bombs

:06:28. > :06:30.and guns to settle scores and attack Muslims. The trial heard that

:06:31. > :06:33.Loughborough Mosque was at the top of his list of potential targets.

:06:34. > :06:36.And he'd written detailed notes about how to attack his old school

:06:37. > :06:39.in the town. A Nottinghamshire farmer who

:06:40. > :06:41.admitted killing his wife has been detained indefinitely in a secure

:06:42. > :06:44.hospital. Peter Thurgarland strangled his wife Julia at their

:06:45. > :06:48.home in Maplebeck just after Christmas last year. Nottingham

:06:49. > :06:51.Crown Court heard that the 72`year`old was suffering from a

:06:52. > :06:59.severe mental illness which had developed after their property was

:07:00. > :07:01.flooded in the storms of 2007. The Chancellor, George Osborne,

:07:02. > :07:08.today joined colliery workers underground at the region's last

:07:09. > :07:14.deep coal mine. And he came with a pre`Christmas present for the miners

:07:15. > :07:19.and their families. The Chancellor said the government would pay for

:07:20. > :07:22.coal delivered to ex`miners' homes. The benefit was scrapped when

:07:23. > :07:24.privately`owned UK Coal went bust earlier this year. From Thoresby

:07:25. > :07:29.Colliery, here's our Political Editor John Hess. Clocking off at

:07:30. > :07:36.the end of the shift at the colliery. Some of the 650 miners who

:07:37. > :07:42.work here headed for the showers and home, and the Chancellor headed in

:07:43. > :07:47.the opposite direction, to join the late shift. The visit was no

:07:48. > :07:52.accident. He has been under political treasure to help some of

:07:53. > :07:55.the 2000 miners who were employed by the company and who lost their call

:07:56. > :08:00.allowance when the firm hit financial trouble. Last week local

:08:01. > :08:05.MPs press the government to intervene. There's a lot of people

:08:06. > :08:08.out there worried about the loss of their call and they need support

:08:09. > :08:15.from the government. The government needs to step in and help out. The

:08:16. > :08:20.concession for retired miners was never an issue but the workers of UK

:08:21. > :08:26.coal found that it added to their current energy bills. Is the visit a

:08:27. > :08:32.clue to the contents of his mini budget next month? It has given the

:08:33. > :08:35.main something of a pre`Christmas budget will stop what will be in it

:08:36. > :08:37.for the rest of us to help with soaring electricity bills? I asked

:08:38. > :08:44.why he was making the announcement now. We're helping with the

:08:45. > :08:49.concession for ex`miners. I'm here at the end of the week when jobs are

:08:50. > :08:53.being created in this country, unemployment is down and inflation

:08:54. > :08:57.is down. As Britain recovers from all that went wrong five years ago,

:08:58. > :09:03.we make sure all parts of the country benefit. If he is planning

:09:04. > :09:09.any more help to cushion rising energy bills, he was not letting

:09:10. > :09:12.warned today. `` letting Alaun. A Derbyshire man's admitted murdering

:09:13. > :09:15.his former girlfriend. Cornelius Brown, who's twenty three, pleaded

:09:16. > :09:18.guilty at Nottingham Crown Court to killing Jade Riley`Ward. She was

:09:19. > :09:20.found dead at her home in Somercotes in September last year.

:09:21. > :09:25.A postmortem examination revealed the thirty year old died from

:09:26. > :09:30.multiple stab wounds. Brown who's from Riddings will be sentenced next

:09:31. > :09:34.month. A taxi driver who drove into a

:09:35. > :09:39.Leicester woman while she was on holiday in New York won't face any

:09:40. > :09:42.criminal charges. Twenty four year old Sian Green was injured last

:09:43. > :09:45.August when she was hit by a taxi that mounted a kerb in Manhattan.

:09:46. > :09:48.Her lawyers say she's incredibly dismayed the driver won't be

:09:49. > :09:55.charged, and she'll pursue a civil action for compensation.

:09:56. > :09:58.The family of a Derbyshire teenager, Jess Gauntley, who died from a brain

:09:59. > :10:00.tumour are welcoming new research which it's hoped will improve

:10:01. > :10:03.survival rates. Experts at the University of Nottingham have

:10:04. > :10:06.developed an unusual method of delivering chemotherapy drugs

:10:07. > :10:19.directly to the affected cells of cancer patients. Carolyn Moses

:10:20. > :10:23.reports. The 16`year`old Jess Gauntley was diagnosed last year

:10:24. > :10:31.with a leg and brain tumour. She died in February. `` with a

:10:32. > :10:39.malignant brain tumour. Her family set up a foundation to fund more

:10:40. > :10:43.research. The University researched a powder which can be transformed

:10:44. > :10:51.into a new form of treatment for the same type of cancer that Jess

:10:52. > :10:55.Gauntley hard. It has the consistency like toothpaste. A

:10:56. > :11:03.sergeant would apply this so that it would be moulded like a cab wall. ``

:11:04. > :11:07.like a cavity wall. It would be gradually released over several

:11:08. > :11:14.weeks. When the temp `` tumour is removed, the polymeric directly

:11:15. > :11:21.releases chemotherapy into nearby cells. This avoids chemotherapy

:11:22. > :11:27.drugs running round the whole body and it is hoped to be used for other

:11:28. > :11:30.cancers as well. This new delivery system which can help deliver more

:11:31. > :11:35.directly the chemotherapy drugs to the brain and give another chance to

:11:36. > :11:40.a child, then it has to be good news. This could be used for other

:11:41. > :11:47.tumours for which surgery cannot remove all the cells. One example

:11:48. > :11:54.would be breast cancer. I hope would be to broaden out this project. This

:11:55. > :11:57.might not take too much time. Clinical trials on humans with these

:11:58. > :12:04.conditions could be just three years away.

:12:05. > :12:08.Good news is we hope. From concerts by musical icons to a

:12:09. > :12:12.two month light festival ` those are some of the events that COULD take

:12:13. > :12:15.place if Leicester becomes the next UK City of Culture. For the first

:12:16. > :12:23.time the full bid document has been made public and our arts reporter

:12:24. > :12:28.Geeta Pendse has been taking a look. Arriving to present their beds in

:12:29. > :12:34.London yesterday, the team went before the judges. Now it is the

:12:35. > :12:40.turn of the public to take a look. After ten months of planning, this

:12:41. > :12:43.is it. 146 pages outlining the artistic vision of Leicester and the

:12:44. > :12:54.cost of delivery. What is on the agenda? ?1.2 million light

:12:55. > :13:02.Festival. Concerts up `` concerts, bringing back famous musicians.

:13:03. > :13:07.Lester's two sons, Sir David and Richard Attenborough will be at the

:13:08. > :13:10.centre of an exhibition. It is believed hosting the year will bring

:13:11. > :13:15.in an extra ?38 million from visitors. Geeta is back from

:13:16. > :13:22.Londonderry and joins us in the studio. So what's next? All of the

:13:23. > :13:29.teams have now pitched to the judges. Swansea had their chance

:13:30. > :13:32.this morning. The judges will make a recommendation to the government and

:13:33. > :13:37.next Wednesday the Culture Secretary, Maria Miller, will make

:13:38. > :13:45.the formal allies admit. It is very close. What is even closer is

:13:46. > :13:50.Children in Need, are you a fan? I am a huge fan. I have brought these

:13:51. > :13:55.because I'm such a fan. This does not fit on my wrist.

:13:56. > :13:58.Thanks, Geeta. Well, talking of big cultural events ` it's all happening

:13:59. > :14:01.at the Nottingham tennis centre tonight. A night when anything can

:14:02. > :14:04.and probably WILL happen for Children in Need. Goodbye from Geeta

:14:05. > :14:09.and me and hello again to Anne! Thank you very much. We have a great

:14:10. > :14:16.crowd here at Nottingham tennis centre. Give us a wave everybody. We

:14:17. > :14:24.have Pudsey. There is so much going on, face baking, `` days painting.

:14:25. > :14:29.We have a fantastic tennis match going on next door. Everyone is

:14:30. > :14:33.dressed up as superheroes, one of the themes of Children in Need. It

:14:34. > :14:38.is all about helping people and raising money. We do raising money

:14:39. > :14:44.very well in the East Midlands, we are big on caning. We raised more

:14:45. > :14:58.than ever before last year, over ?1 million. `` we are big on key ring.

:14:59. > :14:59.`` caring. Our cameras have been out around the region today, here they

:15:00. > :16:22.are. Give Pudsey a hug. Put your money in, brilliant. Thank

:16:23. > :16:29.you, everybody. You are amazing. We do do particularly well here. It is

:16:30. > :16:32.the most amazing charity. We have been bonding with groups over the

:16:33. > :16:38.week to help young people and children have a better life, get out

:16:39. > :16:46.of bad situations. One group I met was fantastic. They are called

:16:47. > :16:50.Nottingham photographers hub. It is all about helping people find

:16:51. > :16:55.themselves and get confidence by taking photographs. We have the

:16:56. > :17:01.pictures here, they are special. I went to meet them. Why don't you

:17:02. > :17:07.have a look and make up your own mind about how fantastic this group

:17:08. > :17:14.is. Awarding skills, credits at level

:17:15. > :17:19.one, congratulations. Pleased? Another success story. Ryan has made

:17:20. > :17:24.huge progress. He attends college three times a week. The project

:17:25. > :17:30.takes referrals from lots of organisations. It is about people

:17:31. > :17:35.who had substance `` substance abuse. Young people who have been

:17:36. > :17:39.homeless, young people in the care system. People with learning

:17:40. > :17:49.disabilities. How does photography help Wes mac it is inaccessible

:17:50. > :17:54.medium. Immediately people are interested. Once we get the men we

:17:55. > :17:59.use photography to develop confidence and self`esteem. It

:18:00. > :18:03.allows you to express your feelings and emotions through your

:18:04. > :18:08.photography. If you feel you have no one to speak to, taking pictures

:18:09. > :18:15.help. It is something to look forward to. I thought, I have

:18:16. > :18:20.photography so it brings up my spirits. I have a good time. Does it

:18:21. > :18:29.change your life is coming here? Definitely. Yes. Finding this course

:18:30. > :18:34.has made life so much easier. It was only for a year, but it boosts your

:18:35. > :18:42.confidence and everything. It has changed a lot. Hopefully in January

:18:43. > :18:49.I will go back to college to get a sport qualification. I want to start

:18:50. > :18:53.my own business. I like having a camera in my hand and filming

:18:54. > :19:01.everyone full top I want to do what he is doing. What would you say to

:19:02. > :19:05.people to give to Children in Need? Please guess, there are lots of

:19:06. > :19:11.people who if given an opportunity would be able to achieve what they

:19:12. > :19:19.want to achieve. We had to meet this young lady. What is your name?

:19:20. > :19:31.Megan. You look beautiful. What are you painted as? A tiger? No. Lots of

:19:32. > :19:40.little Pudsey is here. Colin is in the tennis court next door. Hello.

:19:41. > :19:46.We have to see some tennis. You will see a lot of fancy dress costumes.

:19:47. > :19:51.These are the performance teams and they are taking this tournament very

:19:52. > :19:58.seriously. They are playing to win. Here the tennis centre it is more

:19:59. > :20:02.than just playing the game, they want to identify and bring through

:20:03. > :20:09.future champions. I came down last week to see how they do that.

:20:10. > :20:21.There is no doubt about it, Andy Murray's Wimbledon triumph in a

:20:22. > :20:28.national dam. We can win at tennis. In Nottingham, they think this

:20:29. > :20:33.line`up is the answer. The tennis Centre is working on finding the

:20:34. > :20:39.ones who can go to the top. That is the attitude we try and instil, why

:20:40. > :20:45.not you? We try and introduce a can`do attitude. We have the

:20:46. > :20:50.facility and the coaching expertise. We have the environment so why not?

:20:51. > :20:57.The start very young, the starter four. They love it. There is

:20:58. > :21:07.ambition to. I want to go all the way. I want to go to grand slams and

:21:08. > :21:12.everything. 11`year`olds are training 13 hours a week. The

:21:13. > :21:16.hitting gets harder and the competition fiercer. You get a good

:21:17. > :21:24.opportunity to play tennis. You enjoy it a lot. How good do you

:21:25. > :21:29.think you are? I am better than her. I am better than you. I have beaten

:21:30. > :21:36.you lots of times. Older players train alongside younger players.

:21:37. > :21:47.There's no pressure at their age. They can just play and enjoy running

:21:48. > :21:51.around. They are undistracted by the gorgeous tree shadows in this dome.

:21:52. > :21:57.They are beginning to work out what they can achieve. It has supported

:21:58. > :22:04.me throughout my tennis career. It is a long journey but it has helped

:22:05. > :22:10.me develop my game. I have a good relationship with coaches. It has

:22:11. > :22:20.been good. Attitude again, and here they believe they can teach it. You

:22:21. > :22:25.saw there some interviews but here is a performance director. How good

:22:26. > :22:29.is it here? It is fantastic and we have players and parents joining in,

:22:30. > :22:35.everyone is chipping in to do something for Children in Need. Tell

:22:36. > :22:42.us about Freya Christie and what she has achieved in the last few weeks.

:22:43. > :22:45.She has been doing really well. She has made good progress and is

:22:46. > :22:51.currently the youngest British player with the senior tennis

:22:52. > :22:53.ranking which is fantastic. She has just entered the top 100 in the

:22:54. > :23:00.world junior international rankings. Are you confident that as

:23:01. > :23:06.a future champions somewhere in this hall? Why not? They have every

:23:07. > :23:10.opportunity. We have a whole bunch of children and committed parents

:23:11. > :23:16.and they are all invested in trying to be the next Andy Murray. Why

:23:17. > :23:20.not? I am impressed how seriously everyone is taking it distressed ``

:23:21. > :23:26.despite being dressed in fancy dress. Yes, it is very competitive,

:23:27. > :23:37.especially when you get the coaches involved. Thank you very much. It is

:23:38. > :23:40.football's international break but we don't go without completely.

:23:41. > :23:43.Attractive home games for both Notts County and Mansfield this weekend `

:23:44. > :23:46.in Leagues one and two respectively. It's new Notts manager Shaun Derry's

:23:47. > :23:50.first home game in charge. Rugby's Leicester Tigers are in LV Cup

:23:51. > :23:53.action at Worcester tonight ` but arguably the standout games of the

:23:54. > :23:56.weekend are in Ice Hockey. Nottingham Panthers have an away and

:23:57. > :23:58.home double header with big rivals Sheffield Steelers.

:23:59. > :24:01.That is what is going on in the sport, but I am here at the tennis

:24:02. > :24:11.centre. Somewhere I have my fancy dress. I think I should go and get

:24:12. > :24:17.involved. See you later. I love a man involved. Good old

:24:18. > :24:24.Colin. I must introduce this gentleman, Pete Whitehead, head of

:24:25. > :24:30.tennis. You surprised at how many people we have got? It is

:24:31. > :24:37.fantastic, what a great audience. It is brilliant. We have all the

:24:38. > :24:41.coaches out on court to help players. We have a tournament as you

:24:42. > :24:46.said. It is fantastic to have so many people out there. You have all

:24:47. > :24:54.these inflatables which came from the lawn tennis Association? Yes,

:24:55. > :24:59.they sent them up from the O2 Arena. We are privileged to have them

:25:00. > :25:03.appear. It is a fantastic centre and we would like to say thank you very

:25:04. > :25:07.much. What would you say to anyone setting up home with their feet up

:25:08. > :25:13.saying it is too cold to go out tonight? It is never too cold to go

:25:14. > :25:18.out and this is in doors. Come down and have a shot. You may just find

:25:19. > :25:25.the next Greg Rusedski or something. With a bit of luck. Thank you for

:25:26. > :25:32.having us here. Give us a wave, everybody. Do not worry about the

:25:33. > :25:37.cold, just come on down. Will it get any colder.

:25:38. > :25:42.The lady to my left is wearing a pink summer dress, welcome back,

:25:43. > :25:46.Anne. Give us some nice weather please.

:25:47. > :25:51.Anne. Give us some nice It is going to get much colder, a

:25:52. > :25:59.real taste of winter as we head into next week. Not too bad today, more

:26:00. > :26:05.clout than we expected. If you got clear skies, you were lucky. Cloudy

:26:06. > :26:12.overnight tonight. There is an exception in the south`east of

:26:13. > :26:19.Leicestershire and Rutland. You may keep clear skies. That is the chance

:26:20. > :26:26.of some frost forming. For the rest of us it is cloudy. Under the cloud

:26:27. > :26:31.we will see temperatures holding up around five or six Celsius. Not as

:26:32. > :26:35.cold as last night. Tomorrow morning, fog will take its time to

:26:36. > :26:42.clear. Generally it is an overcast day. Remaining dry with a high

:26:43. > :26:47.temperature of nine Celsius. We see a weather front drink `` dropping

:26:48. > :26:52.south on Saturday night. That will bring outbreaks of rain. That is the

:26:53. > :26:58.story on Sunday, a damp day. Some dry spells to be had to stop

:26:59. > :27:02.temperatures around 10 Celsius. This is the outlook for Monday. Take your

:27:03. > :27:06.scarf and gloves because temperatures will get lower

:27:07. > :27:11.throughout the day. It will be bitterly cold. Temperatures will

:27:12. > :27:15.struggle to get higher than five Celsius by the middle of the week.

:27:16. > :27:24.Winter is really on the way. Time to wrap up warm. I think Pudsey might

:27:25. > :27:30.need another court next week. It looks like good fun next door. It

:27:31. > :27:35.is, but it is also really competitive. Did you see the person

:27:36. > :27:42.wearing the Gandalf costume? Very impressive work. This is all about

:27:43. > :27:46.raising money for children. We will meet a lot of the people who have

:27:47. > :27:48.raised the money and lots of the people who have been helped by

:27:49. > :27:50.Children
