:00:00. > :00:12.On East Midlands Today at 6:30: This is East Midlands Today with Dominic

:00:13. > :00:16.Heale and me, Anne Davies. Tonight ` a mother's extraordinary

:00:17. > :00:18.act of forgiveness. Mandie Brown hikes are serving

:00:19. > :00:24.prisoner whose drink`driving killed her son. Everything he has done,

:00:25. > :00:30.Michael has always shown true remorse.

:00:31. > :00:34.Also tonight, after 20 years of dereliction, and I saw and drugs

:00:35. > :00:40.haven is finally demolished. Alas, is it right to fight? What

:00:41. > :00:51.Boxer Carl Froch tells his little boy.

:00:52. > :00:58.And the new `` a mastiff who is half the dog she used to be.

:00:59. > :01:02.Good evening. Welcome to Thursday's programme. First tonight ` in an

:01:03. > :01:05.extraordinary display of forgiveness, a mother today publicly

:01:06. > :01:13.embraced a serving prisoner whose drink`driving killed her son.

:01:14. > :01:16.Michael York was granted special release from prison to address

:01:17. > :01:19.students at his old school in Hinckley. He was joined on stage by

:01:20. > :01:33.Mandie Brown, to raise awareness about the dangers faced by young

:01:34. > :01:37.drivers. This was the moment when a mother

:01:38. > :01:41.publicly renewed her forgiveness for a prisoner jailed for the

:01:42. > :01:46.drink`driving which killed her son. What does her forgiveness mean to

:01:47. > :01:55.you? Everything. I do not forgive myself. For her to forgive me, for

:01:56. > :01:59.what I have done, it really does mean a hell of a lot.

:02:00. > :02:08.Michael has always shown true remorse, and I know my son made the

:02:09. > :02:13.decision to get in that car, I could not be a hypocrite. Through the

:02:14. > :02:16.chats we have 0 not be a hypocrite. Through the

:02:17. > :02:19.chats we have had, this has come about. We have been able to support

:02:20. > :02:24.this project, so something good has come out of it.

:02:25. > :02:29.Two years ago Michael York had been on a 13 hour drinking binge with his

:02:30. > :02:35.friends. He crashed into a tree as he drove them home. Matthew was

:02:36. > :02:37.killed instantly, another friend died later.

:02:38. > :02:41.The Ministry of Justice gave permission for Michael York to

:02:42. > :02:47.address students at his own school `` old school about the dangers of

:02:48. > :02:51.drink driving. I have lost two friends I grew up with. I am still

:02:52. > :02:58.in jail, I am still paying for it now. It is not worth it at all.

:02:59. > :03:05.His appearance was part of a road show which `` whose aim is to make

:03:06. > :03:10.sure every school pupil is aware of the causes of death among young

:03:11. > :03:14.drivers, drink and drugs, mobile phones, speeding and not wearing a

:03:15. > :03:22.seat. It prompted this impassioned plea from Mandie Brown. I am

:03:23. > :03:29.screaming at you, to think. I do not want to see one of your faces with

:03:30. > :03:35.two dates on. It has made me think a lot about going out on driving under

:03:36. > :03:42.the influence of alcohol. I hope that people have learned a lot. It

:03:43. > :03:48.makes me want to make the right decisions later on in life. It

:03:49. > :03:54.really touched my heart. It goes to show how precious life is. I had

:03:55. > :04:01.someone who I loved past away in a similar situation. `` who has passed

:04:02. > :04:07.away. It is quite emotional. Michael York is now back inside

:04:08. > :04:12.Sudbury prison to reflect on what he calls the biggest mistake of his

:04:13. > :04:15.life. But it is a lesson students at his former school will never forget.

:04:16. > :04:19.A man who's survived cancer six times in the last 28 years is

:04:20. > :04:24.setting up a trust named after his son ` who died from cancer earlier

:04:25. > :04:27.this year. Mark Cooper from Leicestershire and

:04:28. > :04:31.his wife Tracy want to celebrate the life of 14`year old Joseph, who had

:04:32. > :04:38.leukaemia, and in his memory raise funds to help other sufferers. James

:04:39. > :04:45.Roberson reports. It is now five months since Joseph

:04:46. > :04:50.died, but for the Coopers, their home is still a shrine to his

:04:51. > :04:56.memory. Joseph was 14 when complications from leukaemia and

:04:57. > :05:00.lymphoma took him away. It has been particularly traumatic because

:05:01. > :05:04.Josef's illness came as Mark himself was between his own fourth and fifth

:05:05. > :05:13.balance of cancer. History going back 28 years. Joseph was diagnosed

:05:14. > :05:19.in 2008 with lymphoma, and I blamed myself straightaway. Eventually we

:05:20. > :05:24.found out it was nothing to do with my illness.

:05:25. > :05:30.For five years Father and son fought their own cancers, Joseph even

:05:31. > :05:37.writing a book. I was diagnosed last year with a second throat cancer.

:05:38. > :05:41.And Joseph was still at that time fighting a lot of problems. Mark

:05:42. > :05:49.survived a sixth boat mast year. Tragically Joseph could not fight of

:05:50. > :05:53.his illness. Joseph died in June, and the next day we were handed by a

:05:54. > :05:59.letter which he had written in the January. I was not in the letter

:06:00. > :06:05.about his life, how happy he had been, which I am very proud of, and

:06:06. > :06:08.I know I am his dad but I am so fortunate to have known him for 14

:06:09. > :06:11.years. After Joseph's fight the Coopers has

:06:12. > :06:17.started a trust to support organisations that help sufferers

:06:18. > :06:24.like him. When Joseph was alive we spoke many times about setting up a

:06:25. > :06:28.charity in which we could help some of the children that he met along

:06:29. > :06:28.his journey. Newspapers are supporting 0

:06:29. > :06:33.his journey. Newspapers are supporting their cause. This weekend

:06:34. > :06:40.a friend will have his beard shaved off for the charity. They hope that

:06:41. > :06:43.through it, Joseph will live on. It's been described as an eyesore

:06:44. > :06:48.and a blight on the landscape ` but that's all set to change.

:06:49. > :06:53.The former Mansfield General Hospital has been derelict for 20

:06:54. > :07:00.years. Work to demolish the site finally started today. Navtej Johal

:07:01. > :07:06.reports. From derelict to demolished. These

:07:07. > :07:10.machines are tasked with tearing down the former Mansfield General

:07:11. > :07:14.Hospital. The site was bought by the Council in June this year. It has

:07:15. > :07:20.over IT of buildings, the oldest dating back to 1900. For over 20

:07:21. > :07:29.years, the site has determined `` deteriorated badly. It is a blighted

:07:30. > :07:35.site, recession, numbers do not stack up. Previous owner had

:07:36. > :07:39.different ideas for this site. We tried to work with him to make that

:07:40. > :07:42.happen, it did not happen so the council stepped in.

:07:43. > :07:47.The council have been committed to demolishing this site. Last month

:07:48. > :07:50.they agreed to pay the extra ?360,000 to cover the cost of

:07:51. > :07:53.demolition. The total cost of the project is

:07:54. > :07:58.expected to be just under ?1 million. This has been a blight on

:07:59. > :08:05.the landscape in terms of Mansfield as a whole and also the residents in

:08:06. > :08:08.this area for 20 years. The council made a commitment to purchase the

:08:09. > :08:12.site, we managed to do that without going down the compulsory purchase

:08:13. > :08:17.route, and having completed on that we managed to get the guys on site

:08:18. > :08:21.and as you can see we got the site clear. The demolitions should be

:08:22. > :08:26.completed by April next year. The council are hoping the site could

:08:27. > :08:31.then be used to build around 40 new homes.

:08:32. > :08:34.Police in Leicester are investigating reports that a woman

:08:35. > :08:40.was assaulted before being put into a car and taken to a park.

:08:41. > :08:44.It happened between half past seven and half past eight yesterday

:08:45. > :08:52.evening. The woman was walking along Rosebery Street when she was

:08:53. > :08:55.approached by two men and assaulted. She was then taken to Spinney Hill

:08:56. > :08:59.Park before being attacked again. Police say she's being treated for

:09:00. > :09:02.head and facial injuries. It's not clear whether she knew the men.

:09:03. > :09:05.A shopkeeper in Nottinghamshire has been ordered to carry out 100 hours'

:09:06. > :09:07.community service and pay ?1,000 in costs after being caught selling

:09:08. > :09:10.fake cigarettes. Trading Standards officers found

:09:11. > :09:11.more than 12,000 counterfeit cigarettes at Andrew's News and

:09:12. > :09:12.Booze 0 cigarettes at Andrew's News and

:09:13. > :09:14.Booze in Sutton`in`Ashfield. 35`year`old Shakhawan Salah pleaded

:09:15. > :09:24.guilty to seven offences at Mansfield Magistrates Court.

:09:25. > :09:29.More than 170 jobs are to be created at a Derby call centre.

:09:30. > :09:33.Webhelp began life as HEROtsc when it moved into the old Egg building

:09:34. > :09:37.at Pride Park in 2011. It's since hired more than 1,000 staff. Now

:09:38. > :09:40.it's looking for another 177 permanent employees, who'll mainly

:09:41. > :09:49.work in satellite TV and internet support.

:09:50. > :09:52.Still to come: The gloves are off. We're at home with Carl Froch

:09:53. > :10:01.discussing the future, family life and THAT fight.

:10:02. > :10:05.High pressure is putting up a fight, but will in dominate for the rest of

:10:06. > :10:11.the week? `` will it dominate.

:10:12. > :10:17.Poachers and even some gamekeepers are both being targeted in a

:10:18. > :10:19.crackdown on wildlife crime. Specialist police teams are being

:10:20. > :10:22.trained to protect birds and animals across rural Derbyshire. Our social

:10:23. > :10:32.affairs correspondent Jeremy Ball reports.

:10:33. > :10:40.The stunning Derbyshire Peak District does not look like a

:10:41. > :10:44.typical crime scene, but then rare birds of prey are not typical

:10:45. > :10:51.victims. His father used to be a magnet for Peregrine Falklands ``

:10:52. > :10:57.this valley. They were preying on grouse, but now they have

:10:58. > :11:04.disappeared. I have lived and worked up here all my life, they are a

:11:05. > :11:07.stunning work `` bird. It would be something I would want to bring my

:11:08. > :11:10.grandchildren to come to see in years to come, and it looks like

:11:11. > :11:18.that will not be possible. Nearby, a nest destroyed killing the

:11:19. > :11:23.checks. Glenn Brown was caught on camera trapping a sparrow hawk. He

:11:24. > :11:27.has been convicted of wildlife offences, so no 20 Derbyshire Police

:11:28. > :11:34.officers have been specially trained to tackle wildlife crime. They want

:11:35. > :11:40.the rest of us to help. Not all gamekeepers are persecuting birds of

:11:41. > :11:48.prey, but there are occasions it happens. We would encourage the

:11:49. > :11:54.public to report things, and getting witnesses is important. Landowners

:11:55. > :11:58.are being told to keep their eyes out as well.

:11:59. > :12:05.Protecting the wildlife has become such a priority, but that does ``

:12:06. > :12:10.does that mean officers are being diverted away from protecting human

:12:11. > :12:15.victims of crime? I think there is a wider aspect when you look at crime

:12:16. > :12:18.here, where you often find that people involved in wildlife crime

:12:19. > :12:26.are also involved in other areas of criminality like domestic abuse.

:12:27. > :12:31.What we are trying to do is build up a whole intelligence picture. It is

:12:32. > :12:35.a picture that is far from clear. The force recorded 200 wildlife

:12:36. > :12:40.incidents last year, they think that is just the tip of the iceberg.

:12:41. > :12:43.A planning application's been submitted for a revamp of the main

:12:44. > :12:46.entrance to Nottingham's Victoria Centre.

:12:47. > :12:49.The centre's owners, Intu, want the way in on Lower Parliament Street to

:12:50. > :12:54.be completely refurbished and surrounded by multicoloured lights.

:12:55. > :12:58.It's all part of a planned ?40 million redevelopment of the centre.

:12:59. > :13:01.The City Council's already approved proposals for similar entrances at

:13:02. > :13:07.the Clock Tower and Glasshouse Street.

:13:08. > :13:10.Commonwealth medallist Ross Davenport says Derby City Council is

:13:11. > :13:14.making a mistake in downgrading its plans for an Olympic`sized swimming

:13:15. > :13:17.pool. The Belper`born swimmer says he's

:13:18. > :13:22.concerned the city will miss out on hosting national competitions. The

:13:23. > :13:25.authority says the pool will now be smaller than planned, and in light

:13:26. > :13:26.of budget cuts, it could be delayed by at least a 0

:13:27. > :13:30.of budget cuts, it could be delayed by at least a year.

:13:31. > :13:35.Equipment used to test the ripeness of cheese is helping people with

:13:36. > :13:38.liver disease in Nottingham. The scanning machine measures liver

:13:39. > :13:44.elasticity, meaning people at risk can be identified before they have

:13:45. > :13:47.any symptoms. The pilot project has doubled the number of patients

:13:48. > :13:51.diagnosed. Experts at the University of Nottingham say if the project is

:13:52. > :14:01.rolled out nationally it will save the NHS nearly ?75 million pounds in

:14:02. > :14:08.the first year. If we can pick it up early, there is a potential to

:14:09. > :14:12.reduce people getting into the last stages, and reduce the cost of care,

:14:13. > :14:18.because they do not need hospital care.

:14:19. > :14:21.Staying with health, next tonight a hospital facility treating the most

:14:22. > :14:25.seriously injured patients is set to become the busiest NHS major trauma

:14:26. > :14:27.centre in England. Already the centre, in Nottingham,

:14:28. > :14:31.treats patients from across Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and

:14:32. > :14:34.parts of Derbyshire. From next April they'll also be taking patients from

:14:35. > :14:43.Lincolnshire and Southern Derbyshire. Our Health correspondent

:14:44. > :14:46.Rob Sissons reports. This report contains flash

:14:47. > :14:52.photography. Opening the major trauma centre

:14:53. > :14:57.ward. They saved Jason's life. He came off his motorbike, the crash

:14:58. > :15:02.took seconds, the recovery has been 18 months and counting. You never

:15:03. > :15:09.think you will be involved in this kind of thing. A major trauma

:15:10. > :15:14.involves the most serious life`threatening cases. Major trauma

:15:15. > :15:18.encompasses the most severely injured patients, people in very

:15:19. > :15:22.serious car accident so falling off horses. They have about a 10% chance

:15:23. > :15:29.of not surviving those injuries. The centre open back in April 2012. They

:15:30. > :15:34.have already treated over 1,600 patients and claim to have saved an

:15:35. > :15:39.extra 71 lives. From next April they expect 900 nations per year, making

:15:40. > :15:42.it England's busiest major trauma centre.

:15:43. > :15:51.It has cost ?2 million to create this unit. Patients can be isolated.

:15:52. > :15:54.Everybody here has their own story about what happened.

:15:55. > :16:01.Warren cannot remember his car crash. My ribs are broken on my left

:16:02. > :16:07.hand side, my shoulder blade's not fantastic, I have scratches and

:16:08. > :16:11.bruises everywhere. David had an accident with farm

:16:12. > :16:15.machinery. Somebody pressed a lever and I bought one straight through my

:16:16. > :16:20.hand. And this man's road accident

:16:21. > :16:26.happened just metres from his home. My pelvis was shattered on one side.

:16:27. > :16:32.I grateful they could actually rebuild it. I never thought five

:16:33. > :16:35.days on I would be able to get up. They are in, day out,

:16:36. > :16:41.round`the`clock, they never know what will come through the door.

:16:42. > :16:43.`` day in, day out. Still to come: A massive mastiff no

:16:44. > :16:47.more. Mizzy's middle is now more medium

:16:48. > :16:49.than extra large. A diet for old dogs that could teach us a new trick

:16:50. > :17:05.` later. Time now for the sport.

:17:06. > :17:10.First, an exclusive at`home interview with Nottingham boxer Carl

:17:11. > :17:12.Froch. The boxing world is still talking about the double world

:17:13. > :17:17.champion's controversial win over George Groves at the weekend. Carl

:17:18. > :17:25.won the fight when the referee stopped it in the ninth round. So,

:17:26. > :17:28.will there be a rematch? Well, Froch told us today it's unlikely ` Groves

:17:29. > :17:37.has had his chance, and Carl wants to end his career with one big fight

:17:38. > :17:43.in Las Vegas. Carl Froch says despite all the

:17:44. > :17:47.controversy and drama, the hardest thing this week has been explaining

:17:48. > :17:55.to his three`year`old that daddy fights for a living. After returning

:17:56. > :18:01.from his battle with George Groves, for the first time his son asked him

:18:02. > :18:06.about the bumps and bruises. He was looking at me really

:18:07. > :18:13.concerned, what has happened? Are explained that is what I do, and

:18:14. > :18:17.then he understands. `` are explained. I said, unless you have

:18:18. > :18:25.good odds on, you cannot hit anybody. He is a clever lad. ``

:18:26. > :18:32.unless you have got gloves on. On Saturday Carl won his fight. He

:18:33. > :18:37.returned his two world title belts when the referee controversially

:18:38. > :18:43.jumped in to stop the fight in the ninth round. What the crowd saw was

:18:44. > :18:47.the referee not letting the fight come to a natural conclusion. I feel

:18:48. > :18:54.like I had my glory taken away from me, because he jumped in. He stole

:18:55. > :18:58.me of my glory, but I am not going to complain about it because I got

:18:59. > :19:06.the win, I successfully defended my title, and I have got my health.

:19:07. > :19:14.Maybe they just wanted to see that full conclusion, that for knockout,

:19:15. > :19:18.but I think a lot of people have watched the fight again now and

:19:19. > :19:23.thought, the referee was right, he was right to stop it because it is

:19:24. > :19:30.dangerous at the end of the day. It is a dangerous sport. Carl is now

:19:31. > :19:35.taking time out with his family in Nottingham to think about his next

:19:36. > :19:39.move. A rematch with Groves, he says, is unlikely. He wants `` he

:19:40. > :19:46.wants one last big fight in Las Vegas. I need to finish my career in

:19:47. > :19:54.a massive fight. That would be much better than going over old ground.

:19:55. > :19:57.He has had his chance, and unfortunately he blew it. He cannot

:19:58. > :20:00.cut it at world level, and that fight proved it.

:20:01. > :20:03.On to football, and a former Notts County footballer is understood to

:20:04. > :20:06.be among six people arrested as part of an investigation into alleged

:20:07. > :20:08.match`fixing in England's lower leagues.

:20:09. > :20:14.33`year`old Delroy Facey now works as a football agent. He played for a

:20:15. > :20:18.number of lower league clubs in his career and spent two seasons at

:20:19. > :20:21.Notts. It follows an investigation by the Daily Telegraph which is

:20:22. > :20:25.being looked at by the National Crime Agency.

:20:26. > :20:30.On to Derby County, who have signed young Manchester United defender

:20:31. > :20:34.Michael Keane on loan today. Keane was with Leicester last season and

:20:35. > :20:38.is a good signing for the Rams. Derby are flying at the moment `

:20:39. > :20:43.four wins in six games and just outside the promotion places. Angela

:20:44. > :20:50.Rafferty has been to see a man who could prove to be a key part of

:20:51. > :20:50.their success. It is not 0

:20:51. > :20:54.their success. It is not always easy being the

:20:55. > :21:00.goalkeeper going from hero to zero with one small mistake, but here at

:21:01. > :21:11.Derby there is a coach on board known worldwide as a goalkeeping

:21:12. > :21:20.guru. They have to touch all the four

:21:21. > :21:27.corners. Tactically, mentally. And physically. And they realise the

:21:28. > :21:30.value of what the goalkeeper does. Eric helped mastermind Manchester

:21:31. > :21:36.United's European and domestic glory, and he is now determined to

:21:37. > :21:40.bring success back to Derby County. Having been there as a player and a

:21:41. > :21:49.coach, I know what it is about. I know what the people want. There is

:21:50. > :21:54.not a magic wand that gets you there.

:21:55. > :22:04.His CV takes some beating. The players understand he is a tough

:22:05. > :22:09.task master. He has got us at it from half past eight in the

:22:10. > :22:15.mornings. My wife is not happy I am still here at four clock, five

:22:16. > :22:18.o'clock at night. `` four o'clock. Lending his

:22:19. > :22:26.services is a major coup, but the chance to return to the club where

:22:27. > :22:31.he `` is an offer he could not turn down. Next year I will be 30 years
