:00:14. > :00:14.night 0 Tonight, Mad Friday. The busiest

:00:15. > :00:21.night of the year for emergency crews.

:00:22. > :00:25.Christmas celebrations have their peak and paramedics pick up the

:00:26. > :00:26.pieces. Also, why thousands 0

:00:27. > :00:30.pieces. Also, why thousands face an anxious

:00:31. > :00:34.New Year due to evictions and repossessions. And the head of a

:00:35. > :00:41.Nottinghamshire Academy quits following a critical Ofsted report.

:00:42. > :00:51.Anyone for cake? Why Santa might be spending a little longer in

:00:52. > :01:03.Nottingham this year. Good evening. Welcome to Friday's

:01:04. > :01:07.programme. All of that to come, but first tonight the police raid on the

:01:08. > :01:10.home of Labour peer and former Leicester MP Greville Janner as part

:01:11. > :01:13.of an investigation into child sex abuse. He has not been arrested.

:01:14. > :01:16.According to his lawyers he is assisting the police with their

:01:17. > :01:18.inquiries. We understand the investigation into historic

:01:19. > :01:20.allegations of sex abuse are connected to the high profile case

:01:21. > :01:21.of Frank Beck. He was 0 connected to the high profile case

:01:22. > :01:24.of Frank Beck. He was a Leicestershire social worker who

:01:25. > :01:27.died in prison while serving a life sentence for sex offences. Our

:01:28. > :01:30.reporter reported on Frank Beck's trial in the early 1990s and has

:01:31. > :01:34.been following the police operation today. Our reporter is in our

:01:35. > :01:38.newsroom now. Tell us more about what's happened today.

:01:39. > :01:46.Leicestershire Police have confirmed that officers searched a property in

:01:47. > :01:49.North London. A spokesman for the force said that its officers

:01:50. > :01:52.executed a search warrant in Barnet, as part of an on`going criminal

:01:53. > :01:55.inquiry. No arrests have been made at this stage. We understand that

:01:56. > :01:58.neither has Lord Janner been interviewed under caution. Lord

:01:59. > :02:01.Greville Janner of Braunstone was the Labour MP for two constituencies

:02:02. > :02:03.in Leicester from 1970 to 1997, Leicester North West, and then

:02:04. > :02:08.Leicester 0 Leicester North West, and then

:02:09. > :02:15.Leicester West. He was then elevated to the House of Lords.

:02:16. > :02:16.So what more do we know about why his home was raided today?

:02:17. > :02:18.We 0 0 his home was raided today?

:02:19. > :02:20.We understand the police are investigating issues relating to

:02:21. > :02:28.Frank Beck, who ran children's homes in Leicestershire from 1973 until

:02:29. > :02:30.1986. In November 1991, Beck was given five terms of life

:02:31. > :02:40.imprisonment for physically and sexually abusing over 100 children

:02:41. > :02:42.in his care. He died later in prison.

:02:43. > :02:44.So what do Lord Janner's Lawyers have to say about today's

:02:45. > :02:47.development? I spoke to his solicitors, Wilmer

:02:48. > :02:50.Hale, this afternoon. They simply directed me to this statement they

:02:51. > :02:54.have put out: Lord Janner has not been arrested but has been assisting

:02:55. > :03:04.the police with their inquiries. We are not able to make any further

:03:05. > :03:07.comment at this time. Next tonight it's the biggest date

:03:08. > :03:15.on the Christmas party calendar. The last Friday before Christmas. And it

:03:16. > :03:18.is infamous too for being the busiest night of the year for the

:03:19. > :03:22.Ambulance Service. For some revellers this will be a night to

:03:23. > :03:24.remember for all the wrong reasons as binge drinking leads to

:03:25. > :03:28.accidents, alcohol fuelled violence and health problems. So, how are the

:03:29. > :03:31.Ambulance Service and the police gearing up for the long night ahead?

:03:32. > :03:42.Live now to our Health Correspondent in the centre of Derby.

:03:43. > :03:45.A real festive atmosphere here in Derby tonight in the marketplace.

:03:46. > :03:51.Thousands of people expected in the city centre bars. This Birds Eye

:03:52. > :03:55.view really shows you the scene. Odds of people is getting here.

:03:56. > :04:05.Hopefully sober. In the bar is in Derby, some people have been

:04:06. > :04:06.drinking for a long time. This Friday last 0

:04:07. > :04:10.drinking for a long time. This Friday last year, over 1500 people

:04:11. > :04:20.called the East Midlands Ambulance Service. 20% up on our usual winter

:04:21. > :04:27.Freddie Mac. That gives you some idea of the pressure they are under.

:04:28. > :04:31.Regarding firepower tonight, they have 500 staff 300 vehicles on the

:04:32. > :04:35.road across the East Midlands. We caught up with the paramedic at

:04:36. > :04:39.Nottingham who was clocking on for her shift a short time ago. She had

:04:40. > :04:54.some advice for people heading out tonight. Only dial 999 or 111 if you

:04:55. > :05:00.need the service. Do you really need the ambulance? Can it wait until the

:05:01. > :05:07.morning when you can go to an urgent care centre or out of hours GP? Does

:05:08. > :05:11.it really need an ambulance? That is for accident and emergency. Whilst

:05:12. > :05:13.we are tied up with you, people could be waiting for an ambulance

:05:14. > :05:13.that really 0 0 could be waiting for an ambulance

:05:14. > :05:16.that really need one. 0 could be waiting for an ambulance

:05:17. > :05:19.that really need one. The police have a difficult act to carry out

:05:20. > :05:23.because they are trying to keep a low`key presence. We want everyone

:05:24. > :05:29.to enjoy the night. They say they are not party pooper is what I there

:05:30. > :05:36.to make people safe. I caught up with an inspector earlier. Tonight

:05:37. > :05:41.is a night for celebrating. We don't want people to feel that the police

:05:42. > :05:45.or anyone else is against that. Who want people to have a safe and

:05:46. > :05:52.enjoyable night out. We are there to make sure that happens. Joy Weldon

:05:53. > :05:57.has put together a triage centre to give first aid to people. Have been

:05:58. > :06:08.here before. What sort of things do you see? Alcohol`related incidents,

:06:09. > :06:11.people who fall, her face or break their bones. 0

:06:12. > :06:18.people who fall, her face or break their bones. You said that people

:06:19. > :06:25.start off being glamorous but then they get into a mess. Good

:06:26. > :06:34.intentions at the start of the night but not the end. People often hurt

:06:35. > :06:37.their face. They don't have the reaction to realise they are

:06:38. > :06:38.following and 0 reaction to realise they are

:06:39. > :06:45.following and put their hands up to stop them. You hope to relieve the

:06:46. > :06:52.pressure on ambulances? That is right. By providing extra care and

:06:53. > :06:57.support in the city centre, we are hoping that will have no impact on

:06:58. > :07:04.the surrounding communities. We are working jointly with the hospitals.

:07:05. > :07:13.It promises to be a big night. It is getting busier.

:07:14. > :07:17.A 23`year`old man from Derbyshire has been given a life sentence after

:07:18. > :07:18.stabbing to death the woman who'd previously looked after him as his

:07:19. > :07:20.baby 0 previously looked after him as his

:07:21. > :07:23.baby sitter. Cornelius Brown from Somercotes stabbed 30`year`old Jade

:07:24. > :07:25.Riley`Ward more than 80 times. Nottingham Crown Court heard they

:07:26. > :07:29.had started a relationship last year, but Brown had become jealous

:07:30. > :07:32.because he thought she was having an affair. He'll spend a minimum of 20

:07:33. > :07:38.years in prison. They have been through various

:07:39. > :07:46.troughs of depression and hope and wanting justice. Total disbelief as

:07:47. > :07:48.has happened to their daughter. Still to come. Cake`making on an

:07:49. > :07:51.epic scale. Probably the biggest and most

:07:52. > :08:02.chocolaty Christmas cake you've ever seen.

:08:03. > :08:05.Next tonight, more people than ever are at risk of becoming homeless

:08:06. > :08:08.according to the housing charity, Shelter. They claim up to 15,000

:08:09. > :08:11.households in the East Midlands face potential eviction or repossession.

:08:12. > :08:26.The rate in Nottingham is second only to London.

:08:27. > :08:32.This 61`year`old has lived in this home in Bilborough for half his

:08:33. > :08:36.life. Recently he has been unable to reach mortgage payments. His

:08:37. > :08:44.diabetes has left him almost completely blind. He is filing for

:08:45. > :08:49.bankruptcy. He has not forgotten what it felt like to face

:08:50. > :08:57.repossession. It left me really deflated. It was like having a black

:08:58. > :09:03.cloud over me all the time. I couldn't sleep at night. Worried

:09:04. > :09:09.about it. Based on the number of mortgage and landlord possession

:09:10. > :09:12.claims in the last year, Shelter says 15,000 homes in the East

:09:13. > :09:20.Midlands are risk of losing their homes. In Nottingham, that is one

:09:21. > :09:28.and `` one in 60. In Leicester, one in 71. In Derby, one in 95. We take

:09:29. > :09:33.500 calls every day from people who are worried about losing their home.

:09:34. > :09:33.Almost 0 are worried about losing their home.

:09:34. > :09:35.Almost one 0 are worried about losing their home.

:09:36. > :09:42.Almost one family on every street is struggling to balance finances. It

:09:43. > :09:50.is on a knife edge. Stewart has been helped by a charity specialising in

:09:51. > :09:57.household debt. There has been a 30% increase of people coming for

:09:58. > :10:04.advice. Last year, we had 210 referrals for mortgage repossession.

:10:05. > :10:09.In future, he has vowed never to buy anything unless he can afford it.

:10:10. > :10:12.A court has heard that four more people have come forward to make

:10:13. > :10:15.allegations against a priest who's facing a string of historic sex

:10:16. > :10:18.abuse charges. 85`year`old Francis Paul Cullen appeared at Derby Crown

:10:19. > :10:23.Court today. Our reporter can tell us more now from our Derby studio.

:10:24. > :10:27.What happened in court? Mr Cullen, who was extradited from

:10:28. > :10:27.Tenerife in August, appeared in the dock 0

:10:28. > :10:27.Tenerife in August, appeared in the dock at 0

:10:28. > :10:32.Tenerife in August, appeared in the dock at Derby Crown Court. He was

:10:33. > :10:36.wearing a t`shirt and he used a hearing device provided by the court

:10:37. > :10:41.to follow proceedings. Now he didn't make any plea today and spoke only

:10:42. > :10:41.to confirm his name. He's facing 27 charges of 0

:10:42. > :10:46.to confirm his name. He's facing 27 charges of sexually abusing three

:10:47. > :10:56.boys. Allegations from the late 1950s to the 1990s. Now today in

:10:57. > :10:58.court the prosecution said that another four complainants have come

:10:59. > :11:02.forward to make allegations against him. Mr Cullen was the parish priest

:11:03. > :11:07.at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church in Mackworth in Derby between

:11:08. > :11:08.1960 and 1978. He also served at a parish in Buxton 0 0

:11:09. > :11:13.1960 and 1978. He also served at a parish in Buxton and at a parish in

:11:14. > :11:16.Nottingham. The court also heard further details about the custody

:11:17. > :11:21.time limits on the extradition warrant. That runs out at the end of

:11:22. > :11:22.February, so 0 0 warrant. That runs out at the end of

:11:23. > :11:22.February, so a 0 warrant. That runs out at the end of

:11:23. > :11:23.February, so a trial 0 warrant. That runs out at the end of

:11:24. > :11:26.February, so a trial date has been fixed for 24 February, although

:11:27. > :11:35.he'll be back in court again before that. He's been remanded in custody.

:11:36. > :11:36.The head teacher of a Nottingham academy criticised by 0

:11:37. > :11:37.The head teacher of a Nottingham academy criticised by Ofsted

:11:38. > :11:46.inspectors for inadequate teaching, has stepped down. Djanogly in Hyson

:11:47. > :11:49.Green was one of six city secondary schools put into special measures.

:11:50. > :11:51.It has emerged that Djanogly was also criticised for using

:11:52. > :12:01.unqualified teachers without proper training or support. This report

:12:02. > :12:08.from our Political Editor. Djanogly Academy was one of eight

:12:09. > :12:12.schools in a region that had an unannounced inspection last month.

:12:13. > :12:17.When I spoke to them, no mention he was leaving and his job had been

:12:18. > :12:24.advertised since the inspection. We are on a journey. We knew that if

:12:25. > :12:32.Ofsted came when they don't, they would find that journey was not

:12:33. > :12:37.complete. The school is singled out for employing many untrained

:12:38. > :12:44.teachers who didn't have the necessary qualifications. This

:12:45. > :12:48.report will have prompted this departure. The key thing now is that

:12:49. > :12:56.they don't dwell on it and wall for a long time. We want to see real

:12:57. > :13:00.action. Qualified teachers, behavioural issues, scrutiny about

:13:01. > :13:08.what is going on in these academies. In a statement, Djanogly says 20% of

:13:09. > :13:09.its teachers are unqualified. These include special vocational teachers

:13:10. > :13:09.qualified 0 0 include special vocational teachers

:13:10. > :13:09.qualified in 0 0 include special vocational teachers

:13:10. > :13:11.qualified in other 0 include special vocational teachers

:13:12. > :13:18.qualified in other ways. Could rushing Mead School in Leicester

:13:19. > :13:21.offer a solution? Its headteacher is now advising the Nottingham schools

:13:22. > :13:27.on how to get out of special measures. Sometimes schools seemed

:13:28. > :13:30.to lose their way a little bit. They can get worn down by some of the

:13:31. > :13:36.challenges and start to think that the culture they live in is what is

:13:37. > :13:36.the cause of the underachievement. It's 0 0

:13:37. > :13:41.the cause of the underachievement. It's actually building up that self

:13:42. > :13:45.belief again. That will be the New Year is resolution for the schools

:13:46. > :13:58.in special measures when they reopen after the Christmas break.

:13:59. > :14:01.Now, children on their way to school in Mansfield this morning got a bit

:14:02. > :14:05.of early Christmas cheer. From their lollipop man. Richard Goucher has

:14:06. > :14:09.been singing ` and dancing along to ` a few festive classics. It's the

:14:10. > :14:12.last day of term for the children as they break up for the holiday.

:14:13. > :14:14.Richard says he loves making the kids laugh but he's not a natural

:14:15. > :14:16.entertainer. I am quite shy. I am a drummer but I

:14:17. > :14:18.like 0 I am quite shy. I am a drummer but I

:14:19. > :14:23.like to hide behind that. I love this job. Job satisfaction from

:14:24. > :14:29.having a laugh with the kids and making them safe is fantastic.

:14:30. > :14:32.It took three weeks, ten chefs and 180 kilograms of chocolate ` a

:14:33. > :14:35.restaurant in Nottingham says it's made one of the country's biggest

:14:36. > :14:39.christmas cakes. Today, the culinary colossus was being sliced up and

:14:40. > :14:48.dished out to the public. And I was the lucky one who got sent out to

:14:49. > :14:52.take a look. Putting the final touches to this

:14:53. > :14:57.winter wonderland. Not only does it look good, everything here is

:14:58. > :15:04.edible. Weighing in at 700 kilograms, this giant cake has been

:15:05. > :15:07.a labour of love for a team of Nottinghamshire chefs. We have

:15:08. > :15:17.planned this for three weeks. Four chefs work on it continuously for

:15:18. > :15:22.seven days. We wanted to create something big so people can enjoy it

:15:23. > :15:23.with us. If you fancy making this cake at 0 0

:15:24. > :15:29.with us. If you fancy making this cake at home, you will need 1400

:15:30. > :15:33.eggs, 30 kilograms of reasons, 50 kilograms of flour and 180 kilograms

:15:34. > :15:39.of chocolate. So I would leave plenty of time for your shopping! Of

:15:40. > :15:45.course, the proof of the pudding is in the taste. What was the verdict

:15:46. > :15:51.from shoppers? Delicious. It is lovely. It is a nice fruitcake. I

:15:52. > :15:57.have never seen such an enormous cake in my life. I don't think I

:15:58. > :16:03.could make one that size! It would not fit in my kitchen! Delicious. It

:16:04. > :16:05.seems to 0 0 not fit in my kitchen! Delicious. It

:16:06. > :16:09.seems to have gone down well. Probably best not to think too much

:16:10. > :16:16.about the calorie count. That is a big one.

:16:17. > :16:20.Quite tasty to. 0 Still to come ` a news feature and

:16:21. > :16:21.some carol singing ` cunningly combined.

:16:22. > :16:24.The news concerns these earthquake damaged bells. While the appropriate

:16:25. > :16:34.carol singing comes from Leicester cathedral.

:16:35. > :16:42.Ding`dong merrily on high. In heaven the bells are ringing.

:16:43. > :16:46.For most the festive season is about friends, family and good food but

:16:47. > :16:55.for us of course it's mostly about football. With me to run the rule

:16:56. > :16:59.over our top teams Ian Barroclough. More from him in a moment. But as

:17:00. > :17:02.our championship sides are vying for promotion there is everything to

:17:03. > :17:12.play for in a packed fixture list. Here's our look ahead.

:17:13. > :17:22.Many Rams fans have seen their dreams country. Six in a row is

:17:23. > :17:22.difficult at any time. To come for defeat 0 0 0

:17:23. > :17:29.difficult at any time. To come for defeat and do it is very difficult.

:17:30. > :17:36.We just have to keep going. It is the third of three huge gains in

:17:37. > :17:39.eight days. Queen's Park Rangers are just 0

:17:40. > :17:45.eight days. Queen's Park Rangers are just about the tip for the top of

:17:46. > :17:49.the championship. We have to go and play our own game. We have plenty of

:17:50. > :17:53.matchwinners. And we have not done as well as we can, it is because we

:17:54. > :17:59.have slightly underperformed. I don't think there have been too many

:18:00. > :18:09.occasions where we have been outplayed as such. Forests are just

:18:10. > :18:14.outside the play`off spaces. Santa, please, this time around, let's try

:18:15. > :18:25.and conclude that deal for a striker. We need to finish off the

:18:26. > :18:36.good work we are doing. Everyone is hoping for maximum points to make

:18:37. > :18:40.this a very Merry Christmas. Well, let's look at some of those

:18:41. > :18:43.games ` especially the big one between Leicester and QPR. Our guest

:18:44. > :18:46.is Ian Baraclough ` a Leicester lad and former QPR player. How good are

:18:47. > :18:49.Queen's Park Rangers, and can Leicester match them? They can. QPR

:18:50. > :18:58.have experienced players through the spine of the team. We have Charlie

:18:59. > :19:01.Austin to score goals. Everyone is tipped to win the division, but

:19:02. > :19:07.there is no reason why Leicester can stay up there. We've built this week

:19:08. > :19:13.up for Leicester. Do weeks like this make seasons? I think so. They can

:19:14. > :19:18.have a bearing on how the second half of the season goes. If they get

:19:19. > :19:22.a win at Loftus, it will give them a boost over the Christmas period. No

:19:23. > :19:26.reason why they can't build on that in the second half of the season.

:19:27. > :19:39.What do you make of Forest and Derby? Steve McClaren has had a

:19:40. > :19:42.great impact. You look at Nottingham Forest and you hear they are after a

:19:43. > :19:47.striker. You would be hoping they can find one in the transfer window

:19:48. > :19:50.in January. You spent a lot of time at Notts County ` have they turned a

:19:51. > :19:50.corner 0 0 at Notts County ` have they turned a

:19:51. > :19:51.corner under 0 at Notts County ` have they turned a

:19:52. > :19:55.corner under Shaun Derry Coverage of all those game ` plus Mansfiel's

:19:56. > :19:58.home game with Accrington ` on your BBC Local Radio station.

:19:59. > :20:06.Two wins on the trot. It is fantastic for them. Not to be

:20:07. > :20:11.missed. The rest of the news now. More

:20:12. > :20:14.football first ` a huge signing for Notts County Ladies ` who will be

:20:15. > :20:15.part of the women's Super`League next year.

:20:16. > :20:18.They have brought in 0 next year.

:20:19. > :20:24.They have brought in England striker Ellen White who has played 42 games

:20:25. > :20:30.for his country, scoring 17 goals. She was playing for Arsenal. To

:20:31. > :20:36.train every day, to improve personally. The coaches that I will

:20:37. > :20:40.have there will be unbelievable. Hopefully the players we bring in
