:00:11. > :00:13.Tonight ` an inquiry's underway after a stroke victim, turned away

:00:14. > :00:17.from a hospital, died. Good evening. Welcome to Monday's programme.

:00:18. > :00:20.First tonight ` a stroke patient who was turned away from hospital

:00:21. > :00:25.because it was five o'clock on a Friday evening has died. It is no

:00:26. > :00:33.good just saying these things happen. They don't. They must not

:00:34. > :00:37.happen again. The Serious Fraud Office confirms it has started a

:00:38. > :00:41.criminal investigation into allegations of bribery and

:00:42. > :00:46.corruption at Rolls`Royce. Plus, it's one of the busiest

:00:47. > :00:52.shopping days before Christmas, but why do so many of us leave it so

:00:53. > :00:57.late? And Lester's singing sensation, Sam

:00:58. > :01:08.Bailey, gets the Christmas number one.

:01:09. > :01:12.Good evening and welcome to the programme. First tonight, a stroke

:01:13. > :01:16.patient who was turned away from hospital because it was five o'clock

:01:17. > :01:19.on a Friday evening has died. John Mallalieu's grieving widow Ruth is

:01:20. > :01:20.left wondering whether he might have survived had he not been redirected

:01:21. > :01:28.from King's Mill hospital. She says the ambulance was just

:01:29. > :01:31.three minutes from the stroke unit when they were diverted to

:01:32. > :01:38.Nottingham. More from our Health Correspondent Rob Sissons. John

:01:39. > :01:40.Mallalieu's death raises many questions, but there have 0

:01:41. > :01:42.Mallalieu's death raises many questions, but there have been few

:01:43. > :01:47.answers from the ambulance service or the hospitals. It should have

:01:48. > :01:52.been a straightforward journey, it is 19 miles from continent to the

:01:53. > :01:57.stroke unit at Kings Mill hospital. Ruth Mallalieu says the ambulance

:01:58. > :02:01.was only three minutes away when it was diverted, adding another 15

:02:02. > :02:05.miles to the hospital in Nottingham. She reckons because of Friday

:02:06. > :02:11.evening traffic, the added journey took an hour. And John service

:02:12. > :02:17.disputes that and says it took half that time. I said to the ambulance

:02:18. > :02:21.man, I have never had such a horrendous journey in all my life

:02:22. > :02:30.and my poor husband kept saying, I am slipping, I am slipping. With

:02:31. > :02:34.three minutes to go, they told them not to take on there but to take

:02:35. > :02:37.into the city Hospital. The Angelus men were furious. It `` we would

:02:38. > :02:41.have 0 men were furious. It `` we would

:02:42. > :02:45.have got nearby five o'clock. Five o'clock is the cut`off time for the

:02:46. > :02:53.Kingsmill hospital to take new patients on a Friday. The experience

:02:54. > :02:56.of the couple were not good in this situation. We need to make sure this

:02:57. > :03:02.does not happen again and I would like to apologise on behalf of the

:03:03. > :03:08.NHS. Two local MP, it is clear something went very wrong. I cannot

:03:09. > :03:14.prove that this particular ambulance came from the Nottinghamshire area,

:03:15. > :03:18.but I will bet it did not. It took a long time to get there in the first

:03:19. > :03:19.place. I understand content is a reward sport but it should 0

:03:20. > :03:25.place. I understand content is a reward sport but it should have been

:03:26. > :03:28.quicker. Also bursting to have been navigational errors, that is

:03:29. > :03:34.inexcusable today particularly today. If they were local people,

:03:35. > :03:40.they would know the roads better than the dead. Following the death

:03:41. > :03:47.of John Mallalieu, the initial findings of the enquiry are expected

:03:48. > :03:53.in mid`January. A reporter joins us in the studio. A disturbing case

:03:54. > :03:57.when we are told all the time to act fast when it comes to strokes? Yes,

:03:58. > :04:03.we are told that all the time. Television adverts told us to look

:04:04. > :04:09.out for the key symptoms of stroke and minutes matter. You should act

:04:10. > :04:12.fast and I a name names. In this case, the ambulance may have taken

:04:13. > :04:20.about 40 minutes to get to that house. `` dial 999. It took the best

:04:21. > :04:24.part of two hours to get to Kings Mill hospital. There are many

:04:25. > :04:27.questions around us we want to put too East Midlands and John service

:04:28. > :04:33.and the hospital, also refused interviews so far. When there is

:04:34. > :04:39.preliminary findings come out next month, we hope they will face

:04:40. > :04:42.questioning as to what went wrong in this case and lessons. It is not the

:04:43. > :04:49.first time we have featured problems with stroke patients getting to

:04:50. > :04:56.hospital. Any month ago we reported how sons were taken to queue MC by

:04:57. > :05:02.mistake. `` how some were taken to queue MC hospital by mistake.

:05:03. > :05:04.Heavy rain and gale`force winds are causing problems for travellers

:05:05. > :05:08.across the region. In Ruddington, drivers using the A60 found the

:05:09. > :05:11.route blocked by a fallen tree at the top of Kirk Lane. Weather

:05:12. > :05:14.forecasters are warning that the combination of wind and rain could

:05:15. > :05:16.cause flooding and bring down trees causing widespread disruption.

:05:17. > :05:20.Meanwhile, dozens of rail services have been delayed or cancelled. East

:05:21. > :05:22.Midlands Trains have been running a significantly reduced service to

:05:23. > :05:27.London St Pancras this afternoon and evening because of storms. Network

:05:28. > :05:32.Rail has imposed speed restrictions on some routes. It's to reduce the

:05:33. > :05:35.risk caused by trees and other debris blocking lines and damaging

:05:36. > :05:46.overhead power lines and signals So, have we seen the worst of it yet?

:05:47. > :05:51.Anna's here later with the forecast. The simple answer is no, the rain

:05:52. > :05:56.intensifies and the winds strengthened to give us a stormy

:05:57. > :06:05.night. I'll have an in`depth forecasts metering the programme. ``

:06:06. > :06:09.litre in the programme. But next tonight ` The serious fraud

:06:10. > :06:11.office has confirmed it's started a criminal investigation into

:06:12. > :06:13.allegations of bribery and corruption at Rolls`Royce. The

:06:14. > :06:17.Derby`based engine maker says it's fully co`operating. Some of the

:06:18. > :06:21.allegations date back more than 20 years and centre on claims of

:06:22. > :06:29.improper payments made in Far East markets. Mike O'Sullivan has this

:06:30. > :06:33.report. The allegations have been swirling around Rolls`Royce for more

:06:34. > :06:39.than a. Allegations that millions of pounds were paid out in backhanders

:06:40. > :06:42.to help secure a jet engine deals. Today the Serious Fraud Office

:06:43. > :06:46.confirmed those allegations are now being looked at as part of a

:06:47. > :06:52.criminal investigation. Rolls`Royce has made it clear it wants to get to

:06:53. > :06:56.the bottom of the claims surrounding deals in Indonesia, China and

:06:57. > :06:57.elsewhere. At the annual general meeting, the Chief Executive

:06:58. > :07:27.said... It is claimed that in Indonesia in

:07:28. > :07:32.1990 bright was paid so that ideal for 700 engines would go through

:07:33. > :07:38.with the national airline. A controversial figure in Indonesia,

:07:39. > :07:44.the son of the then president, who has lived a playboy lifestyle, has

:07:45. > :07:50.already denied accepting $20 million and a blue Rolls`Royce car.

:07:51. > :07:55.Rolls`Royce is also carrying out its own review of business ethics

:07:56. > :08:00.worldwide. That is being done by a senior litigator. He started work in

:08:01. > :08:12.January and that work is yet to be computed `` completed.

:08:13. > :08:15.A pharmacy service which aims to stop people clogging up GP surgeries

:08:16. > :08:20.with unnecessary appointments says it's been a huge success. The scheme

:08:21. > :08:25.is now in its 10th year. Pharmacists say the services they offer and save

:08:26. > :08:31.patients time and money and keep the NHS running more efficiently.

:08:32. > :08:37.Little Jacob Wood is the latest patient to sign up for a pharmacy

:08:38. > :08:43.first at this chemist in Nottingham. His mum is already a member of the

:08:44. > :08:50.scheme which allows her to receive certain medicines free of charge

:08:51. > :08:57.without bothering her GP. I have four kids so it is usually good for

:08:58. > :09:01.me if we need medicine. You can just come and get it straightaway if they

:09:02. > :09:06.have a temperature instead of going to the doctor so it is really good.

:09:07. > :09:12.It frees up a lot of the time GP so they can concentrate on more complex

:09:13. > :09:17.needs. Pharmacy first has been up running for ten years. Some 250,000

:09:18. > :09:25.patients have taken advantage of the scheme. This frees up tens of

:09:26. > :09:27.thousands of GP appointments. Patients are being urged to use

:09:28. > :09:33.their pharmacist more over the Christmas period to relieve pressure

:09:34. > :09:37.on GPs. A lot of people don't appreciate what pharmacist can do

:09:38. > :09:42.now. Pharmacists have upscaled considerably over the last ten

:09:43. > :09:48.years. We are not just filling prescriptions. We provide a whole

:09:49. > :09:53.range of services. Patients exempt from prescription charges can join

:09:54. > :10:00.pharmacy first by registering at their local pharmacy.

:10:01. > :10:05.If you are leaving it to the last minute, you are not alone. We're

:10:06. > :10:09.talking about Christmas shopping ` today was expected to be the busiest

:10:10. > :10:11.day of the year on the UK's High Streets.

:10:12. > :10:15.The Highcross centre in Leicester says it's had its best Christmas

:10:16. > :10:19.since it opened five years ago. Jo Healey is there for us now. Good

:10:20. > :10:26.evening. I hope you have picked up a bargain. Yes, hello. You may think

:10:27. > :10:31.it is late in the day to be shopping at this place is open until nine

:10:32. > :10:36.o'clock tonight. I struggle to park my car here this morning it was so

:10:37. > :10:44.busy. Last week they had half a million people shopping here. Today

:10:45. > :10:53.they were expecting 94,000 shoppers. Why are all leaving its soul mate?

:10:54. > :10:55.`` so late. We got married a week ago and we

:10:56. > :10:58.haven't had time. 0 We got married a week ago and we

:10:59. > :11:06.haven't had time. It has to be done this Christmas. I've left it to the

:11:07. > :11:12.last minute. We started quite early on in October as though we have

:11:13. > :11:17.managed to find a good bargain when we needed it. But you're still

:11:18. > :11:22.shopping, why? For me, something to wear on Christmas Day. I want to see

:11:23. > :11:31.if I can get a bargain for myself now, you save money if you wait.

:11:32. > :11:38.Just finishing off today. Even though it is one of the busiest days

:11:39. > :11:43.to do it? I was working. We tried to do as much as we could online but we

:11:44. > :11:51.forgot a few things. Would going home, we got here early and now we

:11:52. > :11:56.are done. Well, Joe is the general manager. Is it normal for people to

:11:57. > :12:02.finish in such a rush? Absolutely. People are finished work, school

:12:03. > :12:06.broke up and we anticipate this kind of rush just before Christmas. We

:12:07. > :12:11.heard people saying they're looking for bargains already, are you

:12:12. > :12:16.expecting another surge on Boxing Day with the scale `` with the

:12:17. > :12:21.sales? We are expecting Boxing Day and the days after to be huge, they

:12:22. > :12:27.always are. Is this a record`breaking year? It definitely

:12:28. > :12:33.is for us. We're five years old now. Have extended customers will stop it

:12:34. > :12:40.has been really successful which is great for our retailers. Thank you

:12:41. > :12:45.for joining us. It sounds like a happy Christmas here. Back to you.

:12:46. > :12:50.Still to come. Drama on the field of play.

:12:51. > :12:53.A squirrel stopped play. Much hilarity at the match between

:12:54. > :13:02.Leicester City and QPR after a rodent invades the pitch.

:13:03. > :13:05.Sport is just around the corner but here's something with a football

:13:06. > :13:05.theme, because when X Factor winner Sam Bailey 0

:13:06. > :13:08.theme, because when X Factor winner Sam Bailey sang at the King Power

:13:09. > :13:15.stadium last week, she told the crowd it it was her Christmas

:13:16. > :13:17.present to them. Now the former Gartree prison officer from

:13:18. > :13:30.Leicestershire has got the present she was hoping for ` the Christmas

:13:31. > :13:33.number one. Here's Quentin Rayner. It is called skyscraper and it has

:13:34. > :13:43.taken Sam Bailey to the heights of the charts. 0

:13:44. > :13:46.taken Sam Bailey to the heights of the charts. With her debut single,

:13:47. > :13:51.the X factor winner has secured the Christmas number one spot. The

:13:52. > :13:57.devoted foxes fan got to sing at last week at the stadium. To

:13:58. > :14:03.celebrate getting number one, I'm going to spend an wonderful

:14:04. > :14:09.Christmas with my family, maybe have a bit of champagne but I don't drink

:14:10. > :14:13.so I will go back to a cup of tea. I can't wait to celebrate with my

:14:14. > :14:19.family and friends. It has been amazing. The single is one of the

:14:20. > :14:27.fastest selling of the year and the proceeds are going to two children

:14:28. > :14:32.charities. I still don't feel famous because I am still acting stupid are

:14:33. > :14:40.owned famous people. I still love my egg and chips and steak and chips.

:14:41. > :14:44.I'm still me. The prison service said any celebration inside Gartree

:14:45. > :14:48.would be inappropriate but they congratulated Sam on her massive

:14:49. > :14:57.achievement. Merry Christmas everyone. It is great that the money

:14:58. > :15:03.is going to children's charities. Now for sport. I have never seen a

:15:04. > :15:07.reaction to a half`time performance like that one.

:15:08. > :15:12.We are going to start with cricket because Graeme Swann's brother has

:15:13. > :15:18.left the Nottinghamshire defence. Graeme Swann created controversy by

:15:19. > :15:21.retiring and then suggesting that some international cricketers had

:15:22. > :15:27.their heads up their own backsides. I asked his brother about this. I

:15:28. > :15:33.think the reaction has been a bit strong. I can understand he's making

:15:34. > :15:36.accusations, but no names have been named so until names have been put

:15:37. > :15:45.forward people should reserve judgement. He has always been quite

:15:46. > :15:49.outspoken. He always does things in a certain style, including the

:15:50. > :15:53.announcement of the retirement, what you make of the timing and the

:15:54. > :15:57.reaction? I thought the end of the series might have been his time to

:15:58. > :16:02.go at some of the reaction has been ludicrous. You would think he had

:16:03. > :16:07.left in the middle of war, dereliction of duty and all that

:16:08. > :16:10.nonsense. He is a sportsman who thinks he has hit the wall and

:16:11. > :16:16.walked off into the sunset and that is all there is to it. You suspect

:16:17. > :16:22.it will blow over and we will be left looking back over his career,

:16:23. > :16:26.what would you say? I think what he has achieved has been astonishing.

:16:27. > :16:31.He debuted just before his 30th birthday, he achieved so much in

:16:32. > :16:41.five years and it was amazing. He has this image with the drive, he

:16:42. > :16:47.must have steel behind him? I think he has a facade to some degree, he

:16:48. > :16:54.has always been a bit about JoCo. He was always a professional sportsman.

:16:55. > :16:59.Two days into controversies, is part of him that will enjoy that? Part of

:17:00. > :17:06.him well. He likes to be the centre of attention, he admits that. Part

:17:07. > :17:12.of think it is ridiculous, all the attraction. When it comes down to

:17:13. > :17:16.it, yes just finally hit the wall and that's what it comes down to.

:17:17. > :17:20.In football, it's been a significant weekend for Leicester City. And yet

:17:21. > :17:23.another winning one for Derby County. Leicester had a great win

:17:24. > :17:26.but more importantly their financial future appears to be secure. The

:17:27. > :17:31.club's owner has effectively wiped out debt of ?103 million by

:17:32. > :17:36.converting loans to shares. It was the Christmas present to top the

:17:37. > :17:42.lot, a club saddled with debts of over 100 million is now stable and

:17:43. > :17:47.then victory over a promotion rival. The only thing which stopped

:17:48. > :17:51.everyone was a squirrel. He took centre stage for five minutes. Nice

:17:52. > :17:53.one for the goalkeeper 0 centre stage for five minutes. Nice

:17:54. > :17:58.one for the goalkeeper to chase the animal off the pitch and then for

:17:59. > :18:07.showing his understanding with this goal. This goal leaves them third in

:18:08. > :18:13.the table. Meanwhile Derby County get their seventh in a row. It was

:18:14. > :18:19.followed by a missed penalty and missed chances before this wonderful

:18:20. > :18:25.finish made it too. There was a little warble when this own goal was

:18:26. > :18:32.scored. Craig Bryson soon cut through the defence to ease derby to

:18:33. > :18:37.another classy Vic today in their astonishing run of results. ``

:18:38. > :18:40.classy victory. Nottingham Forest believe they've

:18:41. > :18:44.got a good Christmas in store. Their list of matches looks tough `

:18:45. > :18:47.they're playing three of the top six. But on their trip to the

:18:48. > :18:50.Children's Wards at the Queen's Medical Centre this afternoon, they

:18:51. > :18:55.were taking it in their stride. As Mark Shardlow reports. Who's that

:18:56. > :19:02.dressed in red carrying presents? One of them is the hero of the

:19:03. > :19:07.weekend, coming to hand out guests. That's a great strike, what is says.

:19:08. > :19:12.He made two stunning saves at Birmingham. He said he definitely

:19:13. > :19:21.touch this one but was most pleased with his acrobatics here. He kept

:19:22. > :19:26.yet another clean sheet. Andy Reid is no stranger to these wards. He

:19:27. > :19:34.enjoyed a bit of ant. Who is your favourite player? And day. It's a

:19:35. > :19:42.setup. Most of us have children ourselves. My son was in here when

:19:43. > :19:47.he was born. It is nice to come back and try and put a smile on the faces

:19:48. > :19:50.of the children. Forest have been given Christmas day off before

:19:51. > :19:57.kicking off their programme al home to QPR boss. We look forward to them

:19:58. > :20:02.coming to the city ground. A winner too would make a nice present. I

:20:03. > :20:05.have asked them to surprise me this year for a present.

:20:06. > :20:09.In League One Notts County were moments away from returning to the

:20:10. > :20:12.foot of League One ` but battled back against Bristol City.

:20:13. > :20:15.This is the 89th minute at Meadow Lane. County are a goal down.

:20:16. > :20:19.They're pressing for an equaliser and they're awarded a penalty. The

:20:20. > :20:24.kick's taken by Alan Sheehan ` and it's a valuable draw for Notts as

:20:25. > :20:27.they enter the key Christmas period. Mansfield Town had a dramatic day `

:20:28. > :20:28.even by their standards ` as their slide down League 0

:20:29. > :20:32.even by their standards ` as their slide down League Two continues.

:20:33. > :20:36.Jamie McCombes second had given the Stags a 2`1 lead and the points

:20:37. > :20:39.looked safe as the match went into injury time. But then came the

:20:40. > :20:43.pantomime ending. Accrington Stanley scored twice in added time to steal

:20:44. > :20:51.a 3`2 win. The late goals leave the Stags without a league win in 12

:20:52. > :20:55.games. Rugby. The Leicester Tigers captain

:20:56. > :20:56.Toby Flood is to leave the club at the end of the 0

:20:57. > :20:58.Toby Flood is to leave the club at the end of the season. Director of

:20:59. > :21:01.Rugby Richard Cockerill confirmed the news after the Tigers heavy

:21:02. > :21:04.defeat at title rivals Saracens. Flood's got 60 England caps and has

:21:05. > :21:08.been at Leicester for five years. The club had been hopeful they'd

:21:09. > :21:11.persuade him to stay ` but he now seems likely to go and play in

:21:12. > :21:15.France. Tigers' Christmas started very badly. They conceded six tries

:21:16. > :21:23.at Saracens in a rare heavy defeat going down by 49 points to ten.

:21:24. > :21:27.That's it for the sport. Thank you. Loved the squirrel.

:21:28. > :21:31.Now you don't need us to tell you that with only two sleeps left until

:21:32. > :21:34.Christmas Day, it's an exciting time for children. But how much has the

:21:35. > :21:37.festive season changed over the years? We've been to Kirk Langley

:21:38. > :21:45.Primary School in Derbyshire to ask pupils what they think Christmas was

:21:46. > :21:52.like in the olden days. I don't think they had Christmas trees and

:21:53. > :21:56.tinsel is and angels. They wouldn't have got much presence because they

:21:57. > :22:04.were quite poor. Except for the king and queen. I wasn't there. I think
