:00:23. > :00:26.Tonight: The family of a teenager hit by a tram say more should have
:00:27. > :00:28.been done to save her life. Good evening and welcome to
:00:29. > :00:32.Wednesday's programme. First tonight, the family of a
:00:33. > :00:36.teenager hit by a tram say a new footbridge should have been built
:00:37. > :00:36.there years ago. That should have been 0
:00:37. > :00:36.there years ago. That should have been there 0
:00:37. > :00:39.there years ago. That should have been there years ago after people
:00:40. > :00:51.had been killed. Investigations are underway after a man was killed at
:00:52. > :00:55.this planned in Derbyshire. It is reasonable to ban fizzy drinks and
:00:56. > :01:01.sweets. I really do think it is reasonable. And the blue plaque that
:01:02. > :01:04.has gone up on one of the East Midlands's for most industrialists
:01:05. > :01:17.and how the house itself is coming back to life.
:01:18. > :01:26.The family of a teenager hit by a tram says a new footbridge should
:01:27. > :01:30.have been built years ago. Today a coroner ruled Lindsey's death was an
:01:31. > :01:34.accident. The 13`year`old was killed as she
:01:35. > :01:37.crossed the tramline at Hucknall in Nottinghamshire just over a year
:01:38. > :01:40.ago. Lindsey's was the third death at the same crossing in four years.
:01:41. > :01:47.After the verdict, Lindsey's mother and sister spoke to Jo Healey. She
:01:48. > :01:50.was my girl, she was my friend, my daughter. She was my soul mate. Just
:01:51. > :01:53.over a 0 daughter. She was my soul mate. Just
:01:54. > :01:57.over a year ago, she lost her. Lindsey was hit by a tram. It was
:01:58. > :02:02.the first time she had used the crossing. The driver was said to be
:02:03. > :02:09.blameless. This is what her sister said to him after the inquest. Don't
:02:10. > :02:15.set and blame yourself. The family do not blame you. He was there at
:02:16. > :02:20.the accident. Probably the only one who saw most of the accident. So
:02:21. > :02:26.that is the love for him to live with. I could see a big relief, a
:02:27. > :02:33.weight come off his shoulders. That man must have a vision of Lindsey in
:02:34. > :02:36.his head all of the time. On the windscreen of the tram. He has got
:02:37. > :02:36.to have that vision and I could not live with 0
:02:37. > :02:42.to have that vision and I could not live with that. My heart goes out to
:02:43. > :02:46.him. There is now a ?1.5 million footbridge over the crossing, opened
:02:47. > :02:51.last autumn about a year after Lindsey was killed. It is too late,
:02:52. > :02:57.that bridge should have been there years ago after other people had got
:02:58. > :03:01.injured and killed. I think the reason the bridge is there now is
:03:02. > :03:08.because we would not let it rest. The coroner said she hoped it would
:03:09. > :03:13.prevent any other family suffering as Lindsey's had. I would hate
:03:14. > :03:18.anybody else to have to go through this, I really would. It is
:03:19. > :03:24.horrible. I am glad to see the bridge put up, but it was too late.
:03:25. > :03:29.Next tonight, the factory accident that's claimed a life. 56`year`old
:03:30. > :03:31.man was killed after becoming trapped between two lorries at
:03:32. > :03:34.Toyota in Derbyshire. Police were called to Burnaston just after
:03:35. > :03:39.midnight. Our reporter Amy Harris is outside the factory for us now. Amy
:03:40. > :03:44.what more can you tell us about what happened?
:03:45. > :03:47.Police officers were called to the Toyota factory here in Burnaston,
:03:48. > :03:53.just south of Derby, at 12.40am this morning, to a report of a man
:03:54. > :04:00.trapped between two lorries. The 56`year`old was declared dead at the
:04:01. > :04:08.scene. And tonight a joint investigation is underway.
:04:09. > :04:12.Flags were flying at half`mast today at the Toyota car plant in earnest
:04:13. > :04:20.and, where last night and man was crushed to death between two
:04:21. > :04:23.lorries. The 56`year`old lorry driver from Suffolk was not a Toyota
:04:24. > :04:27.employee but worked for a logistics company. He has not been formally
:04:28. > :04:31.identified, but his family has been informed. As yet, it is not clear
:04:32. > :04:36.what happened, but police and members of the Health and Safety
:04:37. > :04:40.Executive are investigating his death. Officers say there don't
:04:41. > :04:48.appear to be any suspicious circumstances. No one from Toyota
:04:49. > :04:52.would speak on camera but the company issued a statement. They say
:04:53. > :04:57.it is with great regret we had a severe incident on site last night
:04:58. > :05:00.which resulted in a lorry driver receiving serious injuries, sadly
:05:01. > :05:07.resulting in his death. They go on to say, we extend our condolences to
:05:08. > :05:10.the driver's family and friends. For the 3000 workers here, it has been a
:05:11. > :05:19.difficult day as they come to terms with the death of a man who was
:05:20. > :05:24.killed on site doing his job. The news has shocked the workforce here.
:05:25. > :05:29.Many of the staff will be asking how this could happen and why. Those
:05:30. > :05:36.questions will no doubt be answered in the investigation, which is
:05:37. > :05:46.underway and I am told it will take many months. Later in the programme:
:05:47. > :05:50.A packed and varied sports bulletin, including the top Olympic stars
:05:51. > :05:56.who're pulling in the crowds in their determination to get more
:05:57. > :06:00.girls more active. A Leicester MP is calling on an
:06:01. > :06:03.education authority to ban sugar completely from schools. Keith Vaz
:06:04. > :06:07.says hidden calories are contributing to an epidemic of
:06:08. > :06:11.childhood obesity. Now he wants Leicester City Council to become the
:06:12. > :06:16.first in the country to encourage sugar`free canteens and vending
:06:17. > :06:28.machines. Eleanor Garnier has been looking at the issue. So Eleanor,
:06:29. > :06:32.just how hidden is sugar? You might be surprised at just how
:06:33. > :06:36.hidden it can be. In fact Keith Vaz says manufacturers are actually
:06:37. > :06:40.misleading us about the amount of sugar in food and drinks. Did you
:06:41. > :06:42.know this? One can of tomato soup can contain as much as four
:06:43. > :06:47.teaspoons of sugar. Even a low fat yoghurt can have up to five
:06:48. > :06:50.teaspoons in it. And the one we all know about, a can of fizzy drink `
:06:51. > :06:54.well that can have up to nine teaspoons of sugar. And it's all
:06:55. > :07:00.part of the problem of childhood obesity.
:07:01. > :07:06.A healthy school lunch but just how many pupils are getting one?
:07:07. > :07:08.Students at their school in Leicester have special needs and
:07:09. > :07:13.many have individual dietary requirements. This school prides
:07:14. > :07:19.itself on healthy eating but fears have been raised about childhood
:07:20. > :07:24.obesity with a Leicester MP declaring a war on sugar. Keith Vaz
:07:25. > :07:27.has written to the City Council urging all schools in Leicester to
:07:28. > :07:32.go sugar free. I think it is very important that people understand
:07:33. > :07:37.sugar is not good for their health will stop at the moment we have
:07:38. > :07:42.sugar available quite freely in drinks and food in our schools. And
:07:43. > :07:47.with obesity rates we have got, it is important we act immediately. The
:07:48. > :07:54.local authority will not commit to a total ban but is welcoming the idea.
:07:55. > :07:58.I think it is reasonable to ban fizzy drinks and sweets. I do think
:07:59. > :08:04.it is reasonable, because it is not just about obesity and diabetes. It
:08:05. > :08:07.is about behaviour in the classroom and also about dental decay. Most
:08:08. > :08:14.parents and grandparents we spoke to would like to see a ban on sugar. I
:08:15. > :08:19.hate sugar so I would ban it completely. I don't think it's any
:08:20. > :08:23.good for anybody. It is a good idea because I don't know, I would never
:08:24. > :08:28.give my kids fizzy drinks and would not want them to have access to it
:08:29. > :08:34.if I wasn't in control of that access. It is about diet in general.
:08:35. > :08:38.Banning in sugar in schools might be a big gas, but the warning dash if
:08:39. > :08:44.ignored we will have generations of overweight children destined to grow
:08:45. > :08:49.up into overweight adults. Now another surprise, more than half of
:08:50. > :08:51.all adults are expected to be obese by 2050 so it's hoped reducing sugar
:08:52. > :08:53.at a young age will have considerable health benefits.
:08:54. > :08:57.Police are warning drug users they face extra dangers from fake pills
:08:58. > :09:06.after a 19`year`old died in Derbyshire. Officers were called to
:09:07. > :09:13.Leabrooks near Alfreton by ambulance crews treating the teenager for
:09:14. > :09:18.suspected ecstasy use. He died later in hospital. Tests have shown the
:09:19. > :09:23.tablets he took didn't contain genuine ecstasy or MDMA, but other
:09:24. > :09:30.substances. A 16`year`old boy and an 18`year`old woman have been
:09:31. > :09:39.arrested. Police say it's a growing problem. MDMA on its own can kill
:09:40. > :09:44.you. Not many people die from it but some every year. They are putting a
:09:45. > :09:47.cocktail of drugs together to mimic the effects of ecstasy. It is the
:09:48. > :09:51.cock tale causing the problems in many cases.
:09:52. > :09:54.All three Chambers of Commerce have welcomed what they call "good news"
:09:55. > :09:58.for jobs and employment in the East Midlands. There are now 149,000
:09:59. > :09:59.people unemployed according to the latest quarterly figures from the
:10:00. > :10:04.Office for National Statistics. That's down 28,000 from the previous
:10:05. > :10:09.three months and gives an unemployment rate of 6.4%, which is
:10:10. > :10:12.just below the national average. A man has been airlifted to hospital
:10:13. > :10:18.after being struck by a train near Newark Northgate Station. He was
:10:19. > :10:20.taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham with serious head
:10:21. > :10:23.injuries. Network Rail has confirmed that he was a member of their
:10:24. > :10:26.on`track team. There's been major disruption to train services.
:10:27. > :10:30.Travellers are being warned that journeys through the station may
:10:31. > :10:38.still be delayed for up to two hours.
:10:39. > :10:42.You're watching East Midlands Today from the BBC. Still to come: Derby
:10:43. > :10:51.honours one of its greatest industrialists as his former home is
:10:52. > :10:55.restored to its former glory. What a difference a year makes. This
:10:56. > :11:00.time last year we were showing new snowy scenes like this one, but the
:11:01. > :11:03.best we can do tonight is a few wintry showers over the peak
:11:04. > :11:07.district. You may recall the homeowners who
:11:08. > :11:17.were left in the lurch after paying out thousands of pounds for
:11:18. > :11:19.insulation. British Gas pulled its funding after the government changed
:11:20. > :11:26.the rules on how energy`saving schemes are operated. This has had a
:11:27. > :11:30.big effect on the Clifton estate. They had hoped to be warmer this
:11:31. > :11:33.winter, instead many homeowners on the Clifton estate in Nottingham
:11:34. > :11:38.suffered the chill of disappointment.
:11:39. > :11:43.British Gas withdrew ?5 million worth of installation ten days ago,
:11:44. > :11:45.giving 90 days notice. The company blamed government changes to what is
:11:46. > :11:51.called the energy companies obligation. Their green levies added
:11:52. > :11:55.to everybody's gas and electric bills, but they will be cut. It will
:11:56. > :12:01.result in cheaper bills but there won't you money to insulates the
:12:02. > :12:06.concrete homes in Clifton. It had seemed so different back in
:12:07. > :12:09.September. That is when the council, and con tractors and the local MP,
:12:10. > :12:11.Lillian Greenwood encouraged people to come 0
:12:12. > :12:16.Lillian Greenwood encouraged people to come forward to get subsidised
:12:17. > :12:20.installation. Tonight, British Gas said it was still talking to the
:12:21. > :12:27.council about setting up a replacement. But how much money
:12:28. > :12:32.would be available is unclear. Lillian Greenwood is the local MP
:12:33. > :12:36.for those residents and met the energy minister a few hours ago.
:12:37. > :12:42.Lillian, what has the Minister said this afternoon? We got warm words
:12:43. > :12:47.but no certainty about warm homes. He said he will meet with Rajesh gas
:12:48. > :12:51.and is meeting the chairman of Centrica and we'll talk to them
:12:52. > :12:56.about trying to get them to agree to make sure all the people who signed
:12:57. > :13:01.up have got their work completed. He said he wanted to work with those in
:13:02. > :13:04.Nottingham and work with the department to come up with a
:13:05. > :13:10.solution. But the truth is we don't know any more certainty from
:13:11. > :13:16.residents than we did today. It is a shambles. You are the City Council
:13:17. > :13:21.who promoted this scheme, shouldn't you have made certain before
:13:22. > :13:26.encouraging residents to go work ahead with it? The scheme was
:13:27. > :13:31.working, but the government changed the rules in concerns about energy
:13:32. > :13:37.services. It has pulled the rug under the scheme. Have there been
:13:38. > :13:43.any apologies to the people of Clifton? He did not apologise, but
:13:44. > :13:46.he is concerned. I told him about some of the residents who felt they
:13:47. > :13:51.had been let down by this government, particularly those who
:13:52. > :13:55.are homeowners, the hard`working people the Prime Minister claims to
:13:56. > :14:02.stand up for. Not great news for them at the moment, but thanks for
:14:03. > :14:05.joining us. If you are a resident and are worried whether you are a
:14:06. > :14:09.council tenant or a home owner, there is a helpline:
:14:10. > :14:14.The man behind genetic fingerprinting and the vice`chairman
:14:15. > :14:16.of Leicester City have both been given honorary degrees today.
:14:17. > :14:20.Sir Alec Jeffreys, who developed genetic fingerprinting at the
:14:21. > :14:22.University of Leicester in the 1980s received an honorary Doctor of
:14:23. > :14:25.Science from De Montfort University. While the man who became Leicester
:14:26. > :14:34.vice`chairman in 2011, is now an honorary Doctor of Business
:14:35. > :14:41.Administration. Congrats generations for both of
:14:42. > :14:50.them. `` congratulations. Shall we have some sport? One of the
:14:51. > :14:56.big stories, abuse on Twitter. That is what we start with. The former
:14:57. > :14:59.Leicester City and Nottingham Forest striker, Stan Collymore, has accused
:15:00. > :15:03.the social media site Twitter of not doing enough to combat abusive
:15:04. > :15:06.messages. Over the last 48 hours he's says he's been subjected to
:15:07. > :15:09.racism and threats to kill from internet abusers known as trolls.
:15:10. > :15:15.Former footballer, Stan Collymore is now a sports broadcaster and
:15:16. > :15:20.expresses strong views on the game. He cheated and he dived to get a
:15:21. > :15:25.penalty. His forthright but honest opinion resulted in him receiving a
:15:26. > :15:32.flood of abuse on Twitter. Over the last 48 hours it has essentially
:15:33. > :15:40.been explicit racial Bruce. On top of that, direct threat to kill. The
:15:41. > :15:43.former Nottingham Forest and Leicester City player has made a
:15:44. > :15:49.complaint to the police who are investigating. People see there is
:15:50. > :15:52.nothing being done. Not only do they not rather deleting tweets of a
:15:53. > :15:57.racist, sexist and homophobic nature, they open several accounts
:15:58. > :16:04.and drag other people and other trolls who go on abusing people. Is
:16:05. > :16:10.Twitter, perhaps some would argue a reflection of the state of society?
:16:11. > :16:15.Maybe so. But I walk around media city here in Salford and somebody
:16:16. > :16:20.racially abuse is me, it is still a reflection of one person in society.
:16:21. > :16:25.But they dealt with and I am asking Twitter to do the same. Stan, who
:16:26. > :16:32.celebrates his 42nd birthday today has widespread support from the East
:16:33. > :16:37.Midlands foot wall family. I would not expect anything less from the
:16:38. > :16:44.fans, to be fair. They go to the past and say Stan Collymore did
:16:45. > :16:48.this, this and this. This could be your son, your daughter your uncle
:16:49. > :16:56.who are being mocked for religious beliefs, being mocked the
:16:57. > :16:59.disability. Birthday or not, out of banging the drum and hopefully
:17:00. > :17:06.Twitter will respond sooner rather than later. Twitter says abuse is
:17:07. > :17:12.against the rules but does not comment on individual cases.
:17:13. > :17:16.Onto transfer news and Leicester City striker Martyn Waghorn is being
:17:17. > :17:19.linked with a host of clubs, with Blackburn reported to be a potential
:17:20. > :17:21.destination for the 23`year`old. In last night's football Notts
:17:22. > :17:26.County lost for the first time this year at Peterborough. The game saw
:17:27. > :17:32.seven goals, a red card and plenty of drama, as Tom Brown reports.
:17:33. > :17:35.This was a match that had everything, a rejuvenated Notts
:17:36. > :17:43.County going for four wins in a row started the strongest. Four minutes
:17:44. > :17:47.in, there was some sloppy defending. County's pace and trickery were
:17:48. > :17:53.causing problems. Three minutes later a cross from the right was
:17:54. > :17:59.racked `` met by Roman Murray who just beat the keeper. After 15
:18:00. > :18:03.minutes, the match took its first major twist. And off the ball
:18:04. > :18:07.incident led to Ryan Murray getting a red card and Notts County were
:18:08. > :18:14.down to ten men. That woke the home side up. First they pulled one back
:18:15. > :18:18.through this neat turn in the box. Then came the equaliser after the
:18:19. > :18:26.break. They had, County's early hopes shot down. Then came the goal
:18:27. > :18:32.of the match. With 16 minutes to go. But Shaun Derry's Magpies are made
:18:33. > :18:38.of tough stuff and two minutes later they were back on level terms.
:18:39. > :18:43.Squeezing in an equaliser and it was three goals apiece. It looked like
:18:44. > :18:46.the ten men would hold on for an heroic point, even when Peter Boro
:18:47. > :18:52.did have the ball in the net, the Mac dies was saved by the flag. ``
:18:53. > :19:00.Magpies. But this goalmouth scramble, led to Peter Boro's
:19:01. > :19:11.winner. That is the first defeat to 2014 for Nottingham County, but
:19:12. > :19:16.Derry will not be too disheartened. Two of our ever most successful
:19:17. > :19:23.female Olympians have been in the East Midlands today. Gail Adams and
:19:24. > :19:34.Katherine Grainger were in Nottingham to try to get more girls
:19:35. > :19:38.in sport. No shortage of enthusiasm from these
:19:39. > :19:43.girls. Two Olympic medallists providing inspiration. Despite all
:19:44. > :19:52.of the medals and success over recent years, it is the girls that
:19:53. > :19:58.are showing less activity. They are doing less activity than boys by the
:19:59. > :20:05.age of nine. I doubt of 14 only 12% of girls are active. At 15, half as
:20:06. > :20:11.many boys `` girls are taking the recommended amount of exercise. It
:20:12. > :20:20.is their teenage years, if they drop out then it is hard to get them
:20:21. > :20:25.back. I think body image is key to this debate. If you can get the
:20:26. > :20:28.message across you don't have to be thin and surgically enhance, but you
:20:29. > :20:33.can be fit and build an attractive image and a great shape I doing
:20:34. > :20:37.sport. Apart from the issue of body image holding girls back,
:20:38. > :20:42.campaigners say women's sport needs more coverage to change attitudes.
:20:43. > :20:48.My mum was a woman's footballer. When she was 19 she played in the
:20:49. > :20:52.World Cup and had to pay her own way to get there. This is only a few
:20:53. > :20:56.years after England won the World Cup. Every time she was training on
:20:57. > :21:04.the football pitch, she got shouted abuse at. Only now we are seeing
:21:05. > :21:08.women's football on TV. If girls need any more convincing, this is
:21:09. > :21:22.what it feels like to win an Olympic gold. You dream about it your whole
:21:23. > :21:28.athletic Elliott, career. But doing it in London, it was magic. Six
:21:29. > :21:37.months to the Commonwealth games and the girls are catching the boys up.
:21:38. > :21:42.Think of the mega`rich today and the names Bill Gates or Roman Abramovich
:21:43. > :21:44.probably spring to mind. But go back 200 years, and their equivalents are
:21:45. > :21:48.Richard Arkwright and Jedediah Strutt. The two men virtually
:21:49. > :21:51.invented the industrial revolution, right here in the East Midlands.
:21:52. > :21:54.Today, Strutt, who perfected the art of stocking`making, was honoured
