:00:10. > :00:16.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale. Good
:00:17. > :00:21.evening. 100 former police officers have won
:00:22. > :00:24.a landmark age discrimination case. They were all made to retire from
:00:25. > :00:28.the Nottinghamshire force because they'd served more than 30 years.
:00:29. > :00:32.But today an employment tribunal agreed that they'd been unfairly
:00:33. > :00:37.dismissed. Now the force is expecting a big compensation bill.
:00:38. > :00:45.Our social affairs correspondent, Jeremy Ball, has been following
:00:46. > :00:49.today's developments. These job losses were all about
:00:50. > :00:53.cutting the salary bill. Nottinghamshire Police had to make
:00:54. > :00:59.substantial savings, but under the current laws police officers cannot
:01:00. > :01:05.be made redundant. So indeed a power was used to allow officers to be
:01:06. > :01:12.retired after 30 years' service, but only if it is in the interests of
:01:13. > :01:17.effectiveness and efficiency. It was argued this was age discrimination.
:01:18. > :01:23.I said at the time I regretted losing people with 30 years' loyal
:01:24. > :01:26.service, but it was based upon making the right decisions to
:01:27. > :01:29.balance the books and to allow the force to reshape to give a better
:01:30. > :01:34.service. It was a huge missed day, wasn't it?
:01:35. > :01:42.The decision was based upon good legal advice, and it was taken to
:01:43. > :01:49.solve significant problems. Some officers struggled to find work. The
:01:50. > :01:52.police pension is a good pension, but we pay into it for years and
:01:53. > :01:54.years and 0 but we pay into it for years and
:01:55. > :01:58.years and we only take what we are entitled to, but for many of us it
:01:59. > :02:03.was about the injustice of the decision. This could be a huge blow
:02:04. > :02:08.for a force already struggling to balance its budget. It is expecting
:02:09. > :02:12.compensation claims of ?3.5 million, and the force is considering whether
:02:13. > :02:15.to appeal against today's decision. Next ` further education colleges
:02:16. > :02:19.across the East Midlands are facing deep spending cuts, the worst
:02:20. > :02:22.outside London. The Association of Colleges is warning that thousands
:02:23. > :02:31.of students in this region will be affected. This report from our
:02:32. > :02:37.political editor John Hess. In the East Midlands the number of
:02:38. > :02:40.18`year`old people attending college is higher than the national average.
:02:41. > :02:44.Over the next month the colleges will find out their funding for the
:02:45. > :02:51.next academic year. The Department for Education proposes a 17.5%
:02:52. > :02:55.spending cut from September. In the East Midlands colleges will lose
:02:56. > :03:01.?7.2 million in funding, and rightly affecting the courses of just over
:03:02. > :03:05.9,500 students. Further education colleges give
:03:06. > :03:09.young people the skills they need for the future, and we need a better
:03:10. > :03:13.skilled workforce, so I think the Government will think again about
:03:14. > :03:15.these cuts. Even the further education Minister
:03:16. > :03:22.has described the cuts as regrettable. In 2012, 2013 pupils
