:00:00. > :00:17.Thank you. That's all from the BBC News at Six so it's goodbye from me,

:00:18. > :00:22.This is East Midlands Today with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.

:00:23. > :00:27.Tonight, the real lives that lie in the path of HS2.

:00:28. > :00:31.My husband died 14 months ago and we made a rose garden for him, so I

:00:32. > :00:36.just can't believe it. Also tonight, caught up in chaos.

:00:37. > :00:41.What next for Al`Madinah's 140 pupils?

:00:42. > :00:45.Plus, what you really think about council budget cuts.

:00:46. > :00:49.And the very latest in high fashion `` how Nottingham lace made only

:00:50. > :00:50.here is being worn by celebrities and Sean on catwalks across the

:00:51. > :01:09.globe. 0 Good evening and welcome to the

:01:10. > :01:20.programme. First tonight, the jobs that could be lost because of HS2.

:01:21. > :01:22.Up to 600 when the bulldozers start demolition work near the proposed

:01:23. > :01:24.East Midlands hub station in Nottinghamshire. And in

:01:25. > :01:28.Leicestershire, a company boss is trying to save a huge car parts

:01:29. > :01:31.factory from being knocked down. HS2 is now looking at the public

:01:32. > :01:34.response from our region, including individuals and communities, before

:01:35. > :01:42.final decisions on the route are made later this year. Mike

:01:43. > :01:46.O'Sullivan has this report. The company employing 300 people

:01:47. > :01:51.here insists the company can remain year despite HS2. This is the third

:01:52. > :01:55.option for the East Midlands hub station. HS2 admits that because of

:01:56. > :01:59.demolition work up to 600 jobs could be lost in a two kilometre radius

:02:00. > :02:05.and they would have to be relocated. This is a huge, 80 acre site and its

:02:06. > :02:07.layout largely dictated by railway operations that happened 30 years

:02:08. > :02:14.ago. We believe there is enough space for

:02:15. > :02:19.us and HS2 to exist side`by`side. HS2 says the development should

:02:20. > :02:23.create 1500 jobs, regenerating what it calls a pretty unsightly part of

:02:24. > :02:23.the East Midlands. Communities and individuals who have

:02:24. > :02:24.had 0 Communities and individuals who have

:02:25. > :02:26.had a 0 Communities and individuals who have

:02:27. > :02:33.had a year to respond to a public consultation period that ended last

:02:34. > :02:38.month. Near Kirby in Ashfield, all six homes are due to be wiped out

:02:39. > :02:42.the map in this Hamlet. I don't want to move particularly because my

:02:43. > :02:46.husband died 14 months ago and we need a rose garden for him.

:02:47. > :02:50.My grandchildren scatter his ashes there. I just can't believe it. It

:02:51. > :02:52.is a 0 0 there. I just can't believe it. It

:02:53. > :02:56.is a tragedy, as far as I am concerned.

:02:57. > :02:59.Supporters of HS2 pointer to economic benefits, but in

:03:00. > :03:08.Leicestershire are the boss of car parts factory employing 450 people

:03:09. > :03:12.is formally objecting to the route. Relocating could cost between 50 and

:03:13. > :03:17.?100 million in compensation. We have investment decisions to be

:03:18. > :03:20.made in the next three or four years.

:03:21. > :03:23.It is difficult to convince my shareholder he should invest any

:03:24. > :03:28.more money on the site here without uncertainty hanging over us.

:03:29. > :03:32.I think it is essential the East Midlands is connected to the other

:03:33. > :03:35.large cities. It is not just about connections to London but about

:03:36. > :03:39.connections to London, `` Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester.

:03:40. > :03:45.The responses to HS2 are now being considered and could influence

:03:46. > :03:49.changes to the route. And you can see a special report on

:03:50. > :03:53.HS2 and You on tonight's Inside Out East Midlands on BBC One at 7:30pm.

:03:54. > :03:56.A jury has been shown dramatic footage of the moment a Sikh

:03:57. > :03:57.spiritual leader was attacked with an axe during a religious ceremony

:03:58. > :03:59.at 0 an axe during a religious ceremony

:04:00. > :04:03.at a temple in Leicester. The man, whose followers call him the living

:04:04. > :04:07.Guru, is said to be the equivalent of the Pope for the Namdhari branch

:04:08. > :04:10.of the Sikh community. The court was told his attacker will allege that

:04:11. > :04:19.the Guru sexually abused him 20 years ago in India. Here's our Chief

:04:20. > :04:23.News reporter. Last August, his Holiness Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji

:04:24. > :04:33.VI was in the UK from the Punjab on an official visit. His first

:04:34. > :04:36.function was an early morning religious ceremony at the Linden

:04:37. > :04:37.Street Temple in Leicester. 27`year`old Harjit Singh Toor from

:04:38. > :04:39.Oadby, an orthodox Sikh, 0 27`year`old Harjit Singh Toor from

:04:40. > :04:43.Oadby, an orthodox Sikh, had bought a three foot axe two days before the

:04:44. > :04:46.visit .He dressed himself in the traditional white turban and tunic

:04:47. > :04:49.worn by Namdhari Sikhs and entered the prayer hall. Footage shown to

:04:50. > :04:50.the jury captured Harjit Singh Toor walking up to the platform, throwing

:04:51. > :04:52.off a blanket 0 walking up to the platform, throwing

:04:53. > :04:55.off a blanket and wielding the axe at the guru. He was quickly

:04:56. > :04:58.overpowered by worshippers and screaming and shouting could be

:04:59. > :05:08.heard. The guru's right arm was broken in the attack and he had a

:05:09. > :05:12.four inch cut to his face. The Guru 's assistant threw his body in front

:05:13. > :05:16.of his Holiness. He told the court that Harjit Singh Toor was aiming

:05:17. > :05:20.for the Guru 's head and had come with an axe to kill him. He added

:05:21. > :05:26.that afterwards the Guru asked if Mr Toor was all right. The court was

:05:27. > :05:34.told the Guru had stayed at the home of Harjit Singh Toor's uncle before

:05:35. > :05:37.the attack. After he was overpowered by worshippers, Mr Toor was

:05:38. > :05:47.overheard to say he did not believe in the living guru and told them,

:05:48. > :05:50.look what you need me do. The court heard that since his arrest Harjit

:05:51. > :05:54.Singh Toor will allege that the Guru sexually abused him in 20 years ago

:05:55. > :05:57.in India, an allegation not accepted by the prosecution. The jury was

:05:58. > :06:01.told that, whether it was through hatred or revenge, he had a crystal

:06:02. > :06:04.clear motive for wanting to kill the Guru. Mr Toor denies attempted

:06:05. > :06:09.murder but admits grievous bodily harm. Later in the programme, sport

:06:10. > :06:13.comes from Derby, where the Rams face a big test. 0

:06:14. > :06:16.Yes, it's Derby against QPR, Fourth against Third, hopefuls against big

:06:17. > :06:22.spenders who can't afford not to get promoted. Make no mistake cash if

:06:23. > :06:25.Derby win this, they are serious contenders.

:06:26. > :06:27.And it 0 contenders.

:06:28. > :06:31.And it is snow and that is the big contender for the limelight in the

:06:32. > :06:32.next 24 hours. There is a lot of whether going on, join me for all

:06:33. > :06:42.the details later in the programme. Four more men have admitted taking

:06:43. > :06:46.part in a mass attack at a Leicester restaurant. The Moghul Durbar

:06:47. > :06:50.restaurant on East Park Road was badly damaged during the incident

:06:51. > :06:54.last January. A total of eleven people have now pleaded guilty to

:06:55. > :07:01.the attack. Seven have already been jailed for two years each.

:07:02. > :07:04.A hospital is still under threat of closure with people now being given

:07:05. > :07:06.nine weeks to have their say. NHS bosses say at least ?500,000 needs

:07:07. > :07:08.to 0 0 bosses say at least ?500,000 needs

:07:09. > :07:19.to be spent on repairs at Ashby hospital in North West

:07:20. > :07:23.Leicestershire. Managers say the facility, which has 16 beds, may not

:07:24. > :07:26.be big enough to cope with an ageing population. They suggest money might

:07:27. > :07:28.be better spent treating patients at home.

:07:29. > :07:32.A meeting has just started in Derby to try to work out what will happen

:07:33. > :07:36.to about 140 pupils at a troubled Islamic free school. The meeting was

:07:37. > :07:39.called by the new chairman of the Al Madinah Trust after the government

:07:40. > :07:42.announced on Friday that the secondary school must close this

:07:43. > :07:45.summer. But a leading member of one parents' group says she hopes the

:07:46. > :07:48.school will eventually re`open. James Roberson reports.

:07:49. > :07:52.Pupils outside Al`Madinah secondary school in Derby and their parents

:07:53. > :07:55.were shocked last Friday when Schools Minister Lord Nash wrote to

:07:56. > :08:02.the new chairman of the Al`Madinah Trust to say the secondary school

:08:03. > :08:05.must close by the end of next term. What about getting her to another

:08:06. > :08:07.school, surely that worries you? Yes, it does, because where am I

:08:08. > :08:13.going to send her? It is hoped more answers to that

:08:14. > :08:14.will be provided by tonight's meeting of 0

:08:15. > :08:15.will be provided by tonight's meeting of parents, council

:08:16. > :08:19.representatives and the new Trust chairman, who says getting to grips

:08:20. > :08:22.with even basic information about the school has been difficult.

:08:23. > :08:26.They were not sure about how many pupils they had on the roll. I've

:08:27. > :08:29.had to do headcounts to find out how many pupils there are. The finance

:08:30. > :08:34.systems don't work. It is now understood there are about

:08:35. > :08:38.140 pupils at the school. Some are from Nottingham and Burton, but the

:08:39. > :08:40.bulk, around 90, are from Derby, who may need to be spread across the

:08:41. > :08:41.city's 13 mainstream 0 may need to be spread across the

:08:42. > :08:46.city's 13 mainstream secondary schools.

:08:47. > :08:50.We have a duty to provide a school place for every child in the city.

:08:51. > :08:53.That is exactly what we will do, working closely with the secondary

:08:54. > :08:54.schools in Derby to identify where there are places, matching parents

:08:55. > :08:58.with 0 there are places, matching parents

:08:59. > :09:03.with those vacancies. It may be that we will have to work with schools to

:09:04. > :09:06.expand places if necessary. The Al`Madinah primary across the

:09:07. > :09:09.city will move into the secondary school building at half term, but

:09:10. > :09:16.Rifad Shahin says she hopes the secondary school will also rise

:09:17. > :09:19.again. As a parent I will fight until I have assurance from the DfE,

:09:20. > :09:21.from Lord Nash, that once our children reach secondary school age

:09:22. > :09:22.to say 0 children reach secondary school age

:09:23. > :09:25.to say that once our primary children reach secondary school age

:09:26. > :09:28.they will reopen the secondary school, because the stress and

:09:29. > :09:31.everything else we as parents and our children have been through these

:09:32. > :09:37.last few months, it has been abominable.

:09:38. > :09:41.An engineering firm in Leicestershire is taking on 25 new

:09:42. > :09:47.workers after winning part of a multi`million pound support fund. JJ

:09:48. > :09:50.Churchill in Market Bosworth make blades for aeroplane engines and are

:09:51. > :09:55.getting ?1 million from the Sharing in Growth fund. The

:09:56. > :09:57.Government`backed programme is aimed at protecting jobs and creating new

:09:58. > :10:06.opportunities for the aerospace industry.

:10:07. > :10:11.The aerospace industry in the East Midlands is very important. We have

:10:12. > :10:14.a Rolls`Royce, you cannot get better. But we also have a huge

:10:15. > :10:16.supply base, supplying 0 better. But we also have a huge

:10:17. > :10:20.supply base, supplying not just Rolls`Royce but others in the

:10:21. > :10:23.industry, and the challenge is to make them competitive so they can

:10:24. > :10:27.compete on the global scene and grow. The opportunity is phenomenal.

:10:28. > :10:29.Electric buses will soon be running on all of Nottingham City Council's

:10:30. > :10:31.bus 0 on all of Nottingham City Council's

:10:32. > :10:35.bus routes. There are already eight low carbon buses in operation but

:10:36. > :10:38.there will be 50 by September 2015. They will be paid for by the

:10:39. > :10:40.government's Green Bus Fund, which offers grants towards more

:10:41. > :10:41.environmentally`friendly vehicles. The city's received a total of ?5.5

:10:42. > :10:48.million pounds to convert its fleet. Trade unions have criticised plans

:10:49. > :10:52.to cut more than 130 jobs at Children's Centres across Leicester.

:10:53. > :10:58.The City Council wants to merge services at 23 centres as part of

:10:59. > :11:01.plans to save ?4.4 million. The centres run a range of projects like

:11:02. > :11:04.teaching gardening skills to providing midwifery, health and

:11:05. > :11:11.training sessions, as well as play sessions for the under`fives.

:11:12. > :11:20.All 23 centres across the whole of the city are remaining open,

:11:21. > :11:24.delivering services to local people. Staff are the key element in

:11:25. > :11:28.providing services to children and families. You can keep the buildings

:11:29. > :11:31.open, but if there are no staff to run them come it is meaningless.

:11:32. > :11:35.Well, cutbacks and job losses ` it's just about all we've heard from our

:11:36. > :11:36.local councils over the last few years. Today though we can reveal

:11:37. > :11:38.what 0 years. Today though we can reveal

:11:39. > :11:42.what you, the public, actually think about how your money should be

:11:43. > :11:44.spent, and where it could be saved. Nottinghamshire County Council has

:11:45. > :11:48.carried out its largest ever consultation since announcing it

:11:49. > :11:53.would have to cut spending by ?154 million over the next three years.

:11:54. > :11:56.Sarah Teale has been looking at the results.

:11:57. > :11:59.Plenty of people have had their say on this.

:12:00. > :12:02.Yes, the people of Nottinghamshire have responded in their thousands

:12:03. > :12:07.spelling out what they want their council budget spent on and what

:12:08. > :12:12.they are prepared to sacrifice. There's been a total of 38,000

:12:13. > :12:18.responses. And the findings are interesting. These are the services

:12:19. > :12:20.the majority of people want to save. Support for older people, including

:12:21. > :12:23.adults with disabilities, the maintenance of roads and pavements

:12:24. > :12:28.and tackling crime and anti`social behaviour.

:12:29. > :12:30.And the services where people think savings can be made are subsidies

:12:31. > :12:38.for bus and community transport services, street lighting and

:12:39. > :12:41.trading standards. Councillors met today to discuss the findings and

:12:42. > :12:45.will look at whether they've got their proposals right or whether

:12:46. > :12:54.they need to follow what the people think and make changes.

:12:55. > :12:59.Certainly the strength of feeling in areas like support for vulnerable

:13:00. > :13:04.people and roads and pavements, that is something we have to take

:13:05. > :13:08.seriously. I am slightly surprised about street lighting, although we

:13:09. > :13:14.are taking measures to introduce LEEDs on street lighting, which will

:13:15. > :13:17.cost that might look at the cost considerably. If you talk to people

:13:18. > :13:20.about having street lights turned off, there are not many people will

:13:21. > :13:22.want that to happen. Of course, when you're talking about

:13:23. > :13:28.cutting funding it creates controversy. And one area which has

:13:29. > :13:34.attracted much support is for the Nottingham Playhouse. Now the

:13:35. > :13:37.council had suggested cutting the ?94,000 funding it gives to the

:13:38. > :13:39.playhouse, but that was one of the least popular proposals. There was

:13:40. > :13:40.more 0 least popular proposals. There was

:13:41. > :13:46.more support for increasing the cost of blue badges and school meals.

:13:47. > :13:50.That's music to the ears of the Playhouse which organised a vigorous

:13:51. > :13:52.petition to save its funding. We were confident we would have a

:13:53. > :13:52.lot 0 We were confident we would have a

:13:53. > :13:53.lot of support, but 0 We were confident we would have a

:13:54. > :14:01.lot of support, but I think we have all been surprised that it is come

:14:02. > :14:05.out so heavily in our favour. It is understandable they have to look at

:14:06. > :14:09.the level of funding, but we would ask whether they think it should be

:14:10. > :14:12.a 100% cut. It would be disappointing to most people if they

:14:13. > :14:14.do not respond in the way we would hope.

:14:15. > :14:17.Finally, it's worth noting that residents were asked what level of

:14:18. > :14:20.council tax increase they'd be prepared to pay.

:14:21. > :14:23.Having no increase wasn't an option and 45% of people went for the

:14:24. > :14:27.lowest possible increase of just under 2%. Councillors have pledged

:14:28. > :14:30.to listen to the results of this survey and make changes to their

:14:31. > :14:35.original proposals given the constraints they're facing. The

:14:36. > :14:40.final budget details will be rubber stamped towards the end of this

:14:41. > :14:45.month. Still to come ` the rise and rise of

:14:46. > :14:48.Nottingham Lace. How a material that was once in

:14:49. > :15:01.decline is now gracing catwalks across the planet.

:15:02. > :15:07.It is sporting time now, but we have a quiet studio because he is not

:15:08. > :15:13.here with us, he is in the cold. Colin is in Derby.

:15:14. > :15:17.It has been a long time in Derby since the glory days, but you do

:15:18. > :15:21.since there is a buzz here at the moment. The iPro Stadium, as it is

:15:22. > :15:25.called. I am going to tell you about top`level tennis coming back to

:15:26. > :15:27.Nottingham and Winter Olympic history, but our focus is here

:15:28. > :15:31.because it 0 history, but our focus is here

:15:32. > :15:35.because it is fourth placed Derby against Queens Park Rangers. Behind

:15:36. > :15:39.me they have set up a bit of a fan park. There is a tent where the fans

:15:40. > :15:42.are sinking a few pints. We will join them later, but the preparation

:15:43. > :15:47.is of course very different for the players in the stadium and our

:15:48. > :15:50.correspondent has been to see how they are feeling.

:15:51. > :15:55.I am you with the first team coach, Paul Simpson. Great game tonight,

:15:56. > :15:59.QPR. You have not yet be denied team in the top six and is this something

:16:00. > :16:04.you are looking to get over? We're not thinking about that, we know

:16:05. > :16:08.this is the next test for us, we know it is QPR.

:16:09. > :16:11.We're not getting screwed up about who it is. We can only play this

:16:12. > :16:14.game tonight, we are prepared for the game we are looking forward to

:16:15. > :16:17.it and hopefully we will see a fantastic game of football in front

:16:18. > :16:22.of a crowd enjoying what they are seeing and we can move onto the

:16:23. > :16:26.next. You played Queens Park Rangers at their place earlier, you narrowly

:16:27. > :16:29.lost, what is the difference between then and now?

:16:30. > :16:32.I think the whole football club has developed.

:16:33. > :16:36.We are delighted with the response from the players and support staff

:16:37. > :16:40.in the club, but we know we have not achieved anything yet. This is the

:16:41. > :16:44.first of 17 big games to come and they are old games we look forward

:16:45. > :16:46.to, regardless of what has gone before. We are old games we look

:16:47. > :16:53.forward to, regardless of what has gone before. We're looking thank you

:16:54. > :16:57.for your time, Derby County's first team coach, bidding into context

:16:58. > :17:02.this mouthwatering contest at the iPro Stadium.

:17:03. > :17:05.Leicester City will also have the rise closely on this game. It could

:17:06. > :17:09.of course affect their 11 point lead at the top. The Foxes saw their

:17:10. > :17:12.brilliant nine game winning run finally come to an end against

:17:13. > :17:14.Watford on Saturday. They did at least get a draw, although they left

:17:15. > :17:27.it late. Kirsty Edwards was there. ?3, your match day programmes! They

:17:28. > :17:32.have the bit between their teeth and I can't see anyone stopping them.

:17:33. > :17:35.Another three points today. We just get used to winning every

:17:36. > :17:42.week it will be a shock when we lose!

:17:43. > :17:47.It has been a remarkable run and these players really don't want it

:17:48. > :17:54.to end. The linesman's flag stays down!

:17:55. > :18:00.Hopes were high of a 10th win in a row. Watford, though, had not read

:18:01. > :18:05.the script. Back on the Balkan edge of the 18

:18:06. > :18:12.yard box, the linesman 's flag stays down!
