:00:13. > :00:22.And now the news for the East Midlands. I'm Dominic Heale.

:00:23. > :00:25.Controversial plans to close fire stations and lay`off firefighters

:00:26. > :00:29.have been scrapped. It follows an oucry from members of the public,

:00:30. > :00:32.who were worried lives would be put at risk. But campaigners fear the

:00:33. > :00:43.reprieve could prove to be only temporary. Simon Hare can tell us

:00:44. > :00:46.more. You hope you will never need them, but if you do, you also hope

:00:47. > :00:50.they will come quickly. And that's what had led to widespread concerns

:00:51. > :00:53.about what was being proposed. Cutting the number of fire stations

:00:54. > :01:07.in Derbyshire by over a third, from 31 to 20. And a quarter of full`time

:01:08. > :01:11.firefighter posters were to go. Up to 40,000 people had signed the Fire

:01:12. > :01:14.Brigades Union petition against the plans. The man who received it today

:01:15. > :01:17.urged fellow members of the county's fire authority to ditch their

:01:18. > :01:21.original proposals. We have said that for a two year period we will

:01:22. > :01:24.not be closing any fire stations and there will be no firefighter

:01:25. > :01:27.redundancies. But should the Government impose more cuts on us,

:01:28. > :01:32.the closure of fire stations and redundancies would be unavoidable.

:01:33. > :01:44.Yet there is a promise that closures will only happen as a last resort.

:01:45. > :01:54.The news was given a cautious welcome by members of the Save

:01:55. > :01:58.Melbourne Fire Station group. We still have concerns and we want the

:01:59. > :02:01.station to remain open. The county's Chief Fire Officer warned the

:02:02. > :02:05.meeting he won't be able to deliver the same level of service and he

:02:06. > :02:08.urged politicians not to allow elections to get in the way of

:02:09. > :02:11.delivering an effective Fire Service. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue

:02:12. > :02:17.needs to save ?4.4 million over the next four years. Communities like

:02:18. > :02:26.here in Melbourne now know that their fire stations are safe for at

:02:27. > :02:30.least two of those four years. The jury has retired to consider its

:02:31. > :02:33.verdict in the trial of a man accused of attempting to murder a

:02:34. > :02:36.Sikh spiritual leader with an axe. Harjit Singh Toor from Oadby in

:02:37. > :02:39.Leicestershire denies the charge, but admits grievous bodily harm. He

:02:40. > :02:42.attacked His Holiness Sirisat Guru Uday as he attended a religious

:02:43. > :02:46.ceremony at a Leicester temple last August. The judge told the jury the

:02:47. > :02:52.key question they had to answer is whether they were sure Mr Toor

:02:53. > :02:54.intended to kill the guru. An animal charity is urging dog owners to

:02:55. > :02:59.consider vaccination against parvovirus. Vets say a small number

:03:00. > :03:02.of cases have been confirmed in the Derby area, but despite concern from

:03:03. > :03:05.some owners, the level of infection is not higher than normal.

:03:06. > :03:14.Parvovirus can be fatal, but dogs can be protected. If you get your

:03:15. > :03:20.animal vaccinated and keep up`to`date with the booster

:03:21. > :03:25.injections through adulthood, it would be an exceptional case that

:03:26. > :03:30.would go on to be infected with parvovirus. It is important to keep

:03:31. > :03:36.up the booster vaccinations for dogs. Next, robotic technology is

:03:37. > :03:40.being used in the fight against cancer. Nottingham City Hospital is

:03:41. > :03:43.the first in the East Midlands to use the device to remove prostate

:03:44. > :03:46.tumours. The first operation using the robot was carried out this week,

:03:47. > :03:56.as our Health Correspondent Rob Sissons reports. Your life in the

:03:57. > :04:04.robot's hands. A ?2 million addition to Nottingham City Hospital. They

:04:05. > :04:07.call it da Vinci. The surgical robot combines high`definition vision with

:04:08. > :04:11.artculated wristed instruments that allows the surgeon a level of

:04:12. > :04:14.precision and dexterity. What that really means is surgeons can cut

:04:15. > :04:18.better and see better than ever before. Recovering at home, Alan was

:04:19. > :04:21.the first patient to have his prostate cancer removed with the new

:04:22. > :04:27.technology three days ago. He was diagnosed after sensing something

:04:28. > :04:30.was wrong. Something just wasn't right, with my wee pattern mainly

:04:31. > :04:33.through the nights, getting up, wanting to wee. The machine is

:04:34. > :04:38.fantastic. I Googled a little bit of it on YouTube and looked at what it

:04:39. > :04:42.did. Didn't look too much because of the fear factor, but it has done its

:04:43. > :04:52.job. We have got the prostate out in one. Let's be clear, what are the

:04:53. > :04:55.benefits for the patient? So for men that had prostate cancer surgery

:04:56. > :04:58.using the robot, length of stay is reduced, complications is reduced,

:04:59. > :05:04.bleeding is less. The outcomes for the patient are better and they tend

:05:05. > :05:07.to get back to work quicker. The surgeons train on a simulator.

:05:08. > :05:19.Accuracy within millimetres here is everything. One might liken it to an

:05:20. > :05:23.expensive PlayStation. It allows surgeons to train before going live.

:05:24. > :05:29.Alan dreams of going on his mountain bike this summer. I'll always been a

:05:30. > :05:33.strong believer in that what you don't know, don't hurt you, but in

:05:34. > :05:43.this case, what you don't know will kill you. And it will. It will have

:05:44. > :05:46.you if you are not careful. It's been a very special night tonight

:05:47. > :05:49.for two of our region's sporting superstars. In Sarajevo, the city

:05:50. > :05:53.where they won Olympic gold 30 years ago, Jayne Torvill and Christopher

:05:54. > :05:56.Dean took to the ice to recreate their winning performance. They had

:05:57. > :05:57.spent hours training in the Bosnian capital, perfecting their 1984

:05:58. > :06:05.Bolero We'll have a full report from

:06:06. > :06:10.Sarajevo on tomorrow's programme. Now, more high winds and heavy rain

:06:11. > :06:13.are on the way. Mel will be here with the forecast in a moment. But

:06:14. > :06:18.today those affected by yesterday's storm were clearing up. Eleanor

:06:19. > :06:21.Garnier reports. Blue skies today, mask yesterday's bad weather, but

:06:22. > :06:32.damage done by the high winds is clear. Lead ripped off the roof here

:06:33. > :06:35.at St Peter's Church. I have never seen anything quite this dramatic

:06:36. > :06:39.from storm damage. It is like a sardine can. The wind has got

:06:40. > :06:43.underneath it. It ripped the lead off one side exposing the timber and

:06:44. > :06:47.the main concern, of course, is water damage that might occur to the

:06:48. > :06:52.timber. We need to arrange to get that covered with temporary sheeting

:06:53. > :06:55.today. Overnight, firefighters in Leicestershire say they had to deal

:06:56. > :07:03.with double the number of emergency calls they normally get. This road

:07:04. > :07:07.was closed for much of the day after an 80`foot tree was blown down in

:07:08. > :07:12.the wind. In Derby, this block of flats had to be evacuated. None of

:07:13. > :07:17.the residents were hurt, but debris had to be cleared before people were

:07:18. > :07:24.allowed back in their homes. There is relief back in Foston, as the

:07:25. > :07:27.church does have insurance. It could be a very different situation. We

:07:28. > :07:30.are incredibly fortunate that nobody was in or around the church

:07:31. > :07:35.yesterday afternoon. Yes, I dread to imagine what would have happened if

:07:36. > :07:36.anybody had been around. With more bad weather forecast, they are

:07:37. > :07:49.focussed on making the church safe. That's your news. So, it's goodbye

:07:50. > :07:59.from me, but with the latest on the weather now, here's Mel. Today has

:08:00. > :08:01.been the calm between two storms. This was yesterday, clearing away to

:08:02. > :08:06.the North East, but this is what we have got heading our way. Tonight,

:08:07. > :08:12.largely dry with temperatures dropping to freezing, are just a

:08:13. > :08:16.load in the countryside. Some fog in places and possibly some icy patches

:08:17. > :08:22.around. And the winds, easing all the time. Tomorrow starts off on a

:08:23. > :08:24.decent night but it will be a deteriorating picture once again.

:08:25. > :08:29.That brain spilling into the south`west, and we will see that

:08:30. > :08:35.clouds thicken and by mid`morning, that rain will push its way in. The

:08:36. > :08:38.Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the Derbyshire

:08:39. > :08:47.Peak District, where we expect to see some snow. Some clusters of

:08:48. > :08:53.blustery showers packing in behind. The wind will peak overnight, with

:08:54. > :09:01.the potential for costs of around 45 miles an hour. `` gusts. Nick Miller

:09:02. > :09:01.will have the National forecast in a moment,

:09:02. > :09:03.few days and now we go to the weather centre for the national

:09:04. > :09:12.forecast from Nick Miller. Hello, in this winter of perpetual

:09:13. > :09:16.autumn, it seems we're never more than a day away from a storm so we

:09:17. > :09:20.must be due another one and as you've just heard, here it comes,

:09:21. > :09:25.deepening in the Atlantic Trio heading for us. Overall for the UK,

:09:26. > :09:29.we're not expecting this to be as severe as the storm yesterday that

:09:30. > :09:33.there will be some significant impact, particularly where the Met

:09:34. > :09:41.Office has weather warnings in force and that means more rain will serve

:09:42. > :09:44.to heighten the floods. All the while, the wind is picking up,

:09:45. > :09:49.reaching its peak tomorrow night in southern England. This is the rest

:09:50. > :09:55.of tonight and where we've had showers, south-west England and

:09:56. > :10:01.Northern Ireland and Scotland, as icy patches developing. Quite a cold

:10:02. > :10:08.start but, for Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, a dry

:10:09. > :10:11.start for most of us. Look at this - the rain from that area of low

:10:12. > :10:15.pressure I showed you is already across much of southern England and

:10:16. > :10:16.South Wales. These triangles are Met
