:00:00. > :00:17.deliver a lasting With the news for the East Midlands,
:00:18. > :00:20.I'm Anne Davies. First tonight, the Catholic Church
:00:21. > :00:33.says it has no evidence that a priest sexually abused children as
:00:34. > :00:36.long ago as the late 1950s. Today, Father Francis Paul Cullen, who is
:00:37. > :00:40.85, admitted a catalogue of offences in Derby, Buxton and Nottingham. He
:00:41. > :00:43.also spent more than 20 years on the run in Tenerife. Mike O'Sullivan
:00:44. > :00:48.reports from Derby Crown Court. At Patrick Reed priest, Father
:00:49. > :00:55.Francis Paul Cullen abuse seven younger than is over 34 years.
:00:56. > :01:01.Today, pleading guilty at court, to 21 offences in parishes in Derby,
:01:02. > :01:07.Buxton and Nottingham. His actions were pure evil. Sexual abuse of any
:01:08. > :01:09.person, particularly an innocent child is absolute evil and it cannot
:01:10. > :01:16.be justified in any sense whatsoever. Father Cullen came to
:01:17. > :01:23.Derby in the 1950s to prepare the way for this church, Christ the
:01:24. > :01:28.King. From 1957 into the 1970s he abused for altar boys. He was a
:01:29. > :01:35.charismatic young priest who had been sent in here to set up this
:01:36. > :01:41.parish. And you had no idea about this other side of him? None at
:01:42. > :01:51.all. Well you surprised? Surprise and horrified. The abuse continued
:01:52. > :01:55.in St Anthony Buxton. It targeted a young girl and a teenage girl. He
:01:56. > :02:03.was pictured with Bob Geldof in the 1980s. He retired on the grounds of
:02:04. > :02:07.ill health in October of 1987, returning to Ireland. Just under a
:02:08. > :02:12.year later he said he was well enough to come back. This time, as
:02:13. > :02:18.parish priest at St Mary 's in Nottingham. He abused an 11`year`old
:02:19. > :02:22.altar boy. In September 1991 he retired for the second time on the
:02:23. > :02:28.grounds of ill health. A month later he faced sex abuse charges relating
:02:29. > :02:33.to St Mary 's and jumped bail. The diocese of Nottingham says it do
:02:34. > :02:38.nothing about abuse allegations before the St Mary 's case. All I
:02:39. > :02:45.can say is I have seen absolutely no evidence of a cover`up. I have seen
:02:46. > :02:53.no evidence that his abusive Theatre `` abusive behaviour was reported to
:02:54. > :02:59.the bishop at the time. If victims felt comfortable in coming forward
:03:00. > :03:05.to Derbyshire police, come forward, report it. It will be fully
:03:06. > :03:10.investigated. Further charges could possibly be brought against Father
:03:11. > :03:14.Cullen. Three of the victims are making civil compensation claims
:03:15. > :03:18.against the diocese and the churches resuming its own enquiry into Father
:03:19. > :03:23.Cullen'scareer, and enquiry that will report to the Vatican in a few
:03:24. > :03:26.months. `` and enquiry. As we've heard, Cullen spent 20
:03:27. > :03:30.years hiding out on Tenerife. The police say he was tracked down with
:03:31. > :03:39.the help of information from the Diocese of Nottingham. Simon Hare
:03:40. > :03:44.reports from the island. Holiday`makers and expats come here
:03:45. > :03:49.to escape the richest winter. Father Cullen came here to escape British
:03:50. > :03:55.justice, for more than two decades. In Las Christiaan lost stand these
:03:56. > :03:59.apartments. It seems he spent most of those years living here in a
:04:00. > :04:04.modest one`bedroom apartments. He ended up leaving over the death of
:04:05. > :04:11.9000 euros for unpaid community fees. He had earned a living by
:04:12. > :04:16.running errands for a local shop. He told some people he had been an
:04:17. > :04:22.architect in Australia, but he had an altogether more truthful account
:04:23. > :04:27.for a mild of the same fate. The parish priest said Father Cullen
:04:28. > :04:32.used to visit his church regularly to pray, then, one day, came a
:04:33. > :04:40.partial confession. Perhaps two years ago he said, I am a priest. I
:04:41. > :04:46.was surprised because I had seen him before, just a normal person, for
:04:47. > :04:53.many years and suddenly he was a priest. He appeared here and
:04:54. > :04:56.suddenly disappeared. That is because last August he was arrested
:04:57. > :05:02.while visiting Mass at this church in the neighbouring resorts of Playa
:05:03. > :05:06.Taylor Americas. The priest in charge here had recognised him as a
:05:07. > :05:13.wanted mild after an appeal for information that had originated from
:05:14. > :05:17.the the church back in Britain. Before Mr Cullen was arrested and
:05:18. > :05:21.charged in 1991 he was already known to be a regular visitor here to
:05:22. > :05:23.Tenerife, which only raises the question, should he have been caught
:05:24. > :05:32.much sooner? A heart surgeon who passed on a
:05:33. > :05:35.deadly infection killing five patients wants to resume operations,
:05:36. > :05:38.but without telling new patients about his past. John Lu works at
:05:39. > :05:41.Nottingham City Hospital, but hasn't operated since 2009. He is seeking
:05:42. > :05:44.damages from the NHS Trust, and is also claiming that telling patients
:05:45. > :05:54.about his past would mislead them. The hearing at the High Court in
:05:55. > :05:57.London could last two weeks. Our health correspondent Rob Sissons
:05:58. > :06:05.was in court, and he explained the importance of the case.
:06:06. > :06:09.This is a hugely significant case. At the centre, high much patient
:06:10. > :06:17.should be told about the past? The legal team for John Lu say that it
:06:18. > :06:21.is not right he should have to go through enhanced consent for
:06:22. > :06:25.patients and say he poses no greater risk than any other surgeon. The
:06:26. > :06:29.hospital trust says it has the bid the interests of nations first and
:06:30. > :06:31.said they have a right to know what has happened so they can make up
:06:32. > :06:34.their own mind. That's your news. So, it's goodbye
:06:35. > :06:41.from me, but with your weather now, here's Kaye.
:06:42. > :06:47.There is more sunshine to come over the next few days. There will be
:06:48. > :06:51.some rain to come through tonight. The winds are picking up this
:06:52. > :06:55.evening and the rain is not too far away. It will be pushing its way in
:06:56. > :07:00.early in the morning, turning heavy at times. It moves through fairly
:07:01. > :07:08.quickly, so by the end of the night we will be drying up once again.
:07:09. > :07:12.Tomorrow morning, a little bit of cloud first thing but that will be
:07:13. > :07:18.chopped up fairly quickly. It'll be a dry, bright morning with decent
:07:19. > :07:22.bounds of sunshine. More cloud will push in from the west later on in
:07:23. > :07:27.the day and is the chance of a couple of showers later on, but it
:07:28. > :07:31.will be right. It will be mild, the pitches at 10 degrees. But the
:07:32. > :07:33.outlook, more warm sunshine and weapons they handed
:07:34. > :07:37.will be more rain overnight into Thursday.
:07:38. > :07:44.Good evening. We have a spell of wet and windy weather working across the
:07:45. > :07:49.British Isles. Today brought many of us some decent spells of sunshine
:07:50. > :07:54.and it brought us some decent temperatures. In fact, our warmest
:07:55. > :07:59.day of the year so far. At the moment, though, things have
:08:00. > :08:05.changed. This is the gap in the satellite picture. Now, this curl of
:08:06. > :08:09.cloud looks like a snail's shell, it is an area of low pressure that is
:08:10. > :08:13.sweeping wind and rain across us. It's pushed into the west already
:08:14. > :08:17.and is now making rapid progress eastwards, moving into eastern
:08:18. > :08:23.England through the small hours Strong, gusty winds around the Irish
:08:24. > :08:28.Sea coasts. The weather front will weaken as it gets into eastern
:08:29. > :08:31.areas. Behind the weather front things are a good deal clearer and
:08:32. > :08:36.that is the way we will start tomorrow. Our wet and windy weather,
:08:37. > :08:42.the worst of it is out of the way as we look at Tuesday. There will be
:08:43. > :08:44.some sunshine around, but there will be some hefty showers. First thing,
