:00:00. > :00:16.One, it's time for the news where you are.
:00:17. > :00:20.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale. Good
:00:21. > :00:23.evening. First tonight, it's been revealed that an arrest warrant for
:00:24. > :00:29.a fugitive priest wanted on sex abuse charges was withdrawn. It s
:00:30. > :00:34.because magistrates in Notthngham thought there was no chance of
:00:35. > :00:37.finding him. Father Francis Paul Cullen had, at that time, bden
:00:38. > :00:47.hiding away on the island of Tenerife for nine years. He
:00:48. > :00:54.eventually spent 22 years there Saint Mary 's Catholic Church in
:00:55. > :01:00.Nottingham. In 1991. The parish priest was facing a range of sex
:01:01. > :01:03.abuse charges against altar boys. He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates'
:01:04. > :01:09.Court but then jumped bail. A warrant was issued for his `rrest.
:01:10. > :01:13.At Nottingham Magistrates' Court in the year 2000, the arrest w`rrant
:01:14. > :01:18.for him was withdrawn. The police say that meant he was effectively no
:01:19. > :01:22.longer a wanted man. It begs the question, why the magistratd would
:01:23. > :01:23.do that, especially as the `rrest warrant had previously been renewed
:01:24. > :01:51.three times. In a statement: the this solicitor says he has never
:01:52. > :01:54.heard anything like it. Frol the survivors perspective, they will
:01:55. > :02:07.find it hard to understand that anything had changed between 19 1
:02:08. > :02:11.and 2000. He was still a risk. I can't understand how the arrest
:02:12. > :02:14.warrant had been withdrawn `t that time. Father Colin was extr`dited
:02:15. > :02:23.last year. After spending 22 years on the island. On Monday, hd pleaded
:02:24. > :02:30.guilty to 21 offences of sex abuse against children. Nottinghal police
:02:31. > :02:34.says taking him off the wanted list was a decision made by the court.
:02:35. > :02:38.They say they are now working with their partners to improve processes
:02:39. > :02:40.in the justice system. Next, the former Nottinghamshire
:02:41. > :02:44.Police officer whose wife ttrned detective to clear his name. Two
:02:45. > :02:49.years ago Trevor Gray was convicted of rape. But his wife trackdd down
:02:50. > :02:59.evidence which was to prove he was innocent. Now he's fighting to get
:03:00. > :03:03.his job back, as Jo Healey reports. They are close now but almost three
:03:04. > :03:08.years ago, Trevor and Alison split up. In that time, he met a woman in
:03:09. > :03:12.a bar in Nottingham. They spent the night and caught a taxi homd the
:03:13. > :03:16.next day. She was to accuse him of raping her. Your worst nightmare.
:03:17. > :03:21.You couldn't imagine it could be like what has happened to md. I just
:03:22. > :03:27.did not believe he was capable of such a horrible thing. I've been
:03:28. > :03:31.married for 22 years. But hd was sent down to Nottingham prison.
:03:32. > :03:36.Being convicted of something you haven't done and anybody thhnking of
:03:37. > :03:41.you as a monster, a rapist. How could I live without? But Alison
:03:42. > :03:45.never gave up on him. She ttrned detective to find the taxi driver
:03:46. > :03:50.who picked Trevor up from the woman's house. Incredibly, @llison
:03:51. > :04:03.managed to trace the taxi driver and he clearly remembered picking Trevor
:04:04. > :04:06.up from the woman's house. He said he saw them case and embracdd and
:04:07. > :04:08.she said, see you later. So not the actions of a woman who had been
:04:09. > :04:11.raped. The evidence proved to be crucial. Last summer, his conviction
:04:12. > :04:14.was quashed but this month, he had to endure a retrial. The verdict,
:04:15. > :04:19.unanimous. Not guilty. I shdd a tear because the pressure that w`s on the
:04:20. > :04:23.throughout the period was jtst unbearable. But despite that,
:04:24. > :04:28.Nottinghamshire Police weren't given his job back. He was a detective
:04:29. > :04:34.Sergeant for 25 years, getthng many commendations and awards. I've done
:04:35. > :04:39.nothing wrong. I've been through the process and proved to be innocent.
:04:40. > :04:44.The force will not comment on the case. The Police Federation is
:04:45. > :04:47.travelling `` backing Trevor wholeheartedly but he is having to
:04:48. > :04:56.sell up. The legal costs have run into thousands of pounds.
:04:57. > :05:00.Parents across Leicestershire could have to pay up to ?600 for their
:05:01. > :05:03.child to catch a school bus, if proposals are approved. Unddr the
:05:04. > :05:07.scheme the County Council would only pay for transport to the ne`rest
:05:08. > :05:09.school, even if it's over the county border in Leicester City or
:05:10. > :05:12.Nottinghamshire. Catchment `reas would be disregarded. Parents say
:05:13. > :05:23.the proposals are unfair and are vowing to fight them.
:05:24. > :05:27.It is going to be a huge financial difficulty for me to send mx twins
:05:28. > :05:30.to the school. It will cost over ?1000 a year. We moved here to get
:05:31. > :05:36.them into the schools in thd first place. That is pointless. The choice
:05:37. > :05:44.of where children go to school as the parents. They choose to send a
:05:45. > :05:47.child out of the area for what was the original catchment area, then,
:05:48. > :05:50.yes, they will have to pay. A Nottingham Forest player who
