:00:09. > :00:14.And now the news for the East Midlands. Good evening, I'm Simon

:00:15. > :00:17.Ward. First tonight, the families left

:00:18. > :00:20.bereaved by two accidents at a level crossing in Nottinghamshire say an

:00:21. > :00:26.unreserved apology by Network Rail has come too late. The apology comes

:00:27. > :00:30.after MPs have condemned thd company for showing a callous disregard for

:00:31. > :00:39.the families whose loved onds were killed or seriously injured. Quentin

:00:40. > :00:43.Rayner reports. Lawrence Hoggart was one of those

:00:44. > :00:49.who gave evidence to the tr`nsport select committee. On a dark evening

:00:50. > :00:53.in November 2008, his wife Jean was walking over the crossing whth their

:00:54. > :00:57.seven`year`old grandson Mikdy when they were hit by a train. Mr Hoggard

:00:58. > :01:04.received a settlement but no apology.

:01:05. > :01:10.I never received any letter of apology from them, of any

:01:11. > :01:17.description. I was not even invited to the bridge opening in 2003.

:01:18. > :01:24.He says safety warnings werd not heeded from 14 years ago. They knew

:01:25. > :01:29.all about the crossing in 2004, and still ignored it. Tragicallx people

:01:30. > :01:34.have been killed. My wife would still be here, and the

:01:35. > :01:38.grandchildren. Four years after these deaths,

:01:39. > :01:45.13`year`old Lindsey was killed by a tram which is the crossing. This is

:01:46. > :01:48.Lindsey's room. She painted all this herself.

:01:49. > :01:53.Her family also feel badly treated by the company.

:01:54. > :01:57.We are glad the bridge was there, but I would sooner have my daughter.

:01:58. > :02:01.If they had done what they were supposed to have done, my d`ughter

:02:02. > :02:06.would still be here. I have had no apologies, no letters to sax, we are

:02:07. > :02:12.so sorry. And that's it, never have nothing else from them.

:02:13. > :02:16.As for the unreserved apology.. It is too late. It is like somdbody

:02:17. > :02:19.sending you a Christmas card for years later. They started to

:02:20. > :02:26.apologise because they had to, not because they wanted to.

:02:27. > :02:30.Both families are trying to rebuild their lives. Lawrence Hoggart has

:02:31. > :02:37.moved and remarried. Marlend says Network Rail is not left with the

:02:38. > :02:41.painful memories. Network Rail has offered a full and

:02:42. > :02:45.unreserved apology. They have promised to change the culttre of

:02:46. > :02:49.the company, away from blamhng users of crossings and more towards what

:02:50. > :02:53.it can do to reduce the risk of accidents.

:02:54. > :02:56.A grieving daughter says shd will fight on for better regulathon of

:02:57. > :03:00.care homes, after an inquest heard about a catalogue of problels

:03:01. > :03:04.leading up to her mother's death. Kathleen Reid was in a mouldy, damp

:03:05. > :03:07.bedroom ` and her weight wasn't properly monitored at a card home

:03:08. > :03:10.where staff struggled to medt residents' needs. Our health

:03:11. > :03:17.correspondent Rob Sissons w`s at today's hearing into the

:03:18. > :03:23.92`year`old's death. In her younger days, she was in the

:03:24. > :03:28.Land Army. Then, a loving grandma. In her final year she was in a damp,

:03:29. > :03:33.smelly room in a Leicestershire care home, with Alzheimer's dise`se.

:03:34. > :03:38.There were not enough hands on deck to cope with the number of

:03:39. > :03:41.residents, and `` that is another thing that needs to be lookdd at,

:03:42. > :03:46.training and staffing levels. The family it seemed intelldct, The

:03:47. > :03:51.Poplars in Mountsorrel in the Leicestershire countryside. But here

:03:52. > :03:57.they did not keep a close enough la `` I on her weight. There w`s poor

:03:58. > :04:01.record`keeping. Social Services concluded K`thleen

:04:02. > :04:05.Reid suffered neglect, the owner told the inquest she would have done

:04:06. > :04:08.more had she been told. She left the inquest without comment.

:04:09. > :04:19.What have you got to say about Mrs Reid's Beth? Why was the not `` Mrs

:04:20. > :04:22.Reid's death? The most disturbing aspect hs I

:04:23. > :04:31.think what little we know that goes on behind walls. We need more robust

:04:32. > :04:35.monitoring. I think families and friends going into the home have a

:04:36. > :04:39.responsibility as well. If they see things they are not

:04:40. > :04:45.comfortable with, they should not be slow in telling others, and may be

:04:46. > :04:48.going along to the Care Quality Commission or another agencx that

:04:49. > :04:53.has an involvement with the home, and expressing their concerns.

:04:54. > :04:57.Home now has a new manager, and the Care Quality Commission's l`test

:04:58. > :05:02.report has shown improvements. `` the home.

:05:03. > :05:06.Mrs Reid died 14 days after leaving the home to go into Loughborough

:05:07. > :05:10.hospital. Her family heard today from the coroner that he accepted

:05:11. > :05:15.many of the criticisms of the home. He recorded a verdict of de`th by

:05:16. > :05:17.natural causes. As lambing time approaches, five

:05:18. > :05:21.organisations working in thd Peak District have joined forces to urge

:05:22. > :05:25.dog walkers to keep their pdts on leads if they're anywhere ndar

:05:26. > :05:29.sheep. It follows a spate of incidents where pet dogs have chased

:05:30. > :05:38.sheep onto busy main roads ` and even attacked and killed thdm, as

:05:39. > :05:44.this distressing picture shows. Because we are coming up towards

:05:45. > :05:47.lambing time, if sheep are chased, it can cause them to abort, and also

:05:48. > :05:54.when they have got lambs with them, it can separate the use frol the

:05:55. > :06:02.lambs, and the lambs can did from Harper `` hypothermia. `` ewes.

:06:03. > :06:04.A pensioner who dresses as Dlvis has beaten a Liberal Democrat c`ndidate

:06:05. > :06:08.in a Nottingham by`election. David Bishop, who stood for the Bus

:06:09. > :06:10.Pass Elvis Party in the Clifton North by`election, came fourth,

:06:11. > :06:14.pushing the Lib Dems into l`st place. Whilst Labour secured the

:06:15. > :06:17.seat, the 69`year old said he was pleased with the result. He's hoping

:06:18. > :06:17.to stand in the next General Election.

:06:18. > :06:30.I'll be back with the if you enjoyed this afternoon's

:06:31. > :06:34.sunshine, tonight's forecast comes with the promise of more. The

:06:35. > :06:40.weekend is looking really qtite stunning. There will be a lot of dry

:06:41. > :06:44.weather, and plenty of sunshine We have clear skies at the momdnt, that

:06:45. > :06:48.has allowed those to butchers to take an early drop. We may get early

:06:49. > :06:56.frost in places. `` those temperatures. Maybe a bit of mist

:06:57. > :07:00.and hill fog, and butchers start to recover as that cloud moves in. It

:07:01. > :07:05.is a cloudy, misty start to your Saturday, the cloud may produce a

:07:06. > :07:08.little bit of light rain and drizzle into the Derbyshire Peak District,

:07:09. > :07:14.but then just like today thd cloud clears away and the sun comds out. A

:07:15. > :07:22.beautiful afternoon, lots of long, sunny spells. A strengthening

:07:23. > :07:28.breeze, but still a high of 14 degrees. Sunday, a great me`l of

:07:29. > :07:32.sunshine. I will leave you with the outlook, followed

:07:33. > :07:38.that in just a few minutes with the National forecast. London's outlook,

:07:39. > :07:42.plenty of sunshine. Hello. You have got to love the

:07:43. > :07:47.British weather. For a time this afternoon, it felt like we had

:07:48. > :07:50.skipped ahead a couple of months as temperatures reached 17 degrees

:07:51. > :07:51.across parts of southern England. That is
