:01:20. > :01:21.done. Her parents are considering legal action against the hospital `
:01:22. > :01:25.King's Mill in Nottinghamshhre. The NHS calls it a "never event `
:01:26. > :01:30.something, as the name suggdsts that should never happen. The family
:01:31. > :01:33.has been talking exclusivelx to our Health Correspondent, Rob Shssons.
:01:34. > :01:38.It did not start off as an emergency. She had a runny nose and
:01:39. > :01:42.was not feeding welcome and she was wheezing, so I thought I wotld her
:01:43. > :01:46.to the hospital. That was King's Mill in Ashfield in
:01:47. > :01:49.Nottinghamshire. It was manic, people did not seem to
:01:50. > :01:54.know what they were doing. Struggling with peeling, Ellie
:01:55. > :01:59.should have been given 0.27 mg of morphine, and instead received 7
:02:00. > :02:03.mg, 100 times the recommenddd amount.
:02:04. > :02:07.I knew it was too much morphine I challenged the doctor on that but
:02:08. > :02:12.I am not a doctor, so I really did trust these people. It was human
:02:13. > :02:15.error. Two doctors and nurses involved
:02:16. > :02:20.without proper checks the doses was that might go the doors was given. I
:02:21. > :02:24.said I don't care, just get in there and help her.
:02:25. > :02:25.It took one hour to identifxing the mistake.
:02:26. > :02:29.Absolutely fuming. I could not understand how that
:02:30. > :02:33.could happen. After all, we were in a hospital, entrusting our daughter
:02:34. > :02:39.to that there. That's my conveyor Kear. Ellie was transferred to
:02:40. > :02:41.Sheffield hospital and intensive care.
:02:42. > :02:45.The family see the care of their was fantastic.
:02:46. > :02:52.Nobody expected her to survhve. These procedures if they had been
:02:53. > :02:56.followed, my daughter would not have been overdosed. The family's
:02:57. > :03:00.solicitor is in Nottingham. She said King's Mill had bedn open
:03:01. > :03:03.and honest about the mistakd. Michelle and Kyle have been through
:03:04. > :03:07.a harrowing experience which is not over for them yet, Ellie is not out
:03:08. > :03:12.of the woods. We do not know the indications for
:03:13. > :03:15.her long`term health. I did not start `` stop crying for a week
:03:16. > :03:20.after it happened, because we nearly lost her.
:03:21. > :03:23.An absolute miracle she is still here.
:03:24. > :03:26.I'm sure of the impact of the overdose, Ellie will have checks in
:03:27. > :03:31.hospital every few weeks. `` unsure. So gorgeous, and so
:03:32. > :03:38.ghastly for the parents. What have ice had to say? Tonight
:03:39. > :03:42.they have apologised and Serie A very sorry for what happened and
:03:43. > :03:45.lessons have been learned. What is being done to stop this
:03:46. > :03:48.being repeated? They are going to change thd
:03:49. > :03:51.labelling of drugs, procedures have been changed at the hospital and
:03:52. > :03:56.lessons will be shared across the NHS.
:03:57. > :04:02.I should also say that "nevdr event" s do not happen all the timd, thank
:04:03. > :04:07.goodness. 140 plus last year over six months in England, things like
:04:08. > :04:13.surgery leaving bandages after operations, not all overdosds like
:04:14. > :04:16.this case. I should say that King's Mill have also been in the news for
:04:17. > :04:21.another reason today, the tragic case of another baby. You'rd
:04:22. > :04:24.absolutely right. A coroner told the grieving parents
:04:25. > :04:28.of a baby who died after behng born at King's Mill that some of the care
:04:29. > :04:32.they had received was sub`standard. The couple were told baby Rhley had
:04:33. > :04:36.died at birth, only for thel to realise he was still breathhng.
:04:37. > :04:43.After an inquest today they described how they had been through
:04:44. > :04:46.hell. Sarah Teale reports. Daniel and his partner, Jodhe,
:04:47. > :04:51.described their ordeal at Khng's Mill was utterly horrendous.
:04:52. > :04:59.Complications arose from a rare undiagnosed condition called far as
:05:00. > :05:04.a PVR, where they baby, Rildy, was starred of oxygen during birth. He
:05:05. > :05:08.arrived showing no signs of life and attempts to resuscitate him feel
:05:09. > :05:13.that he was pronounced dead. Over the next hour the couple re`lised he
:05:14. > :05:17.was still alive. Our hopes were raised that Riley would livd, but by
:05:18. > :05:20.this time he had been starvdd of oxygen.
:05:21. > :05:26.He died two days later. We went through hell being told not once but
:05:27. > :05:30.twice our baby had died. An inquest found the staff had `` had followed
:05:31. > :05:36.all guidelines. The coroner acknowledged thdre were
:05:37. > :05:39.some issues of sub optimal care given during the labour and after
:05:40. > :05:44.birth, but she said she belheved there was not one course of action
:05:45. > :05:49.that could have changed the outcome for Riley. The family say evidence
:05:50. > :05:53.heard at the inquest suggests Riley would have been in distress for some
:05:54. > :05:55.two hours before he was born, something medical staff did not pick
:05:56. > :06:00.up. That day in February 2013 should
:06:01. > :06:02.have been one of the happiest of their lives and instead enddd in
:06:03. > :06:07.tragedy. It is possible Riley's life could
:06:08. > :06:09.have been saved with altern`tive management and this could bd
:06:10. > :06:15.investigated further through a civil claim for negligence.
:06:16. > :06:18.A terrible ordeal for this couple. Even if Riley couldn't have been
:06:19. > :06:21.saved, his parents were tre`ted with sub standard care?
:06:22. > :06:28.Yes, the hospital described his death as a tragic but natur`l event.
:06:29. > :06:31.They have said there are ardas they can improve income and that has been
:06:32. > :06:36.done. They have also said they want to stress that care at the hospital

:12:40. > :12:42.to be inadequate. We need to change leadership.
