:00:08. > :00:14.This is East Midlands Today with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.

:00:15. > :00:18.Tonight: closed for at least eight weeks. A fire in a plant room brings

:00:19. > :00:27.the curtain down at Derby's Assembly Rooms.

:00:28. > :00:30.Friday's blaze has caused bhg damage and is bad news for the box office

:00:31. > :00:36.as well. And the former soldiers fighting a

:00:37. > :00:39.new war. Without the help I received, I wouldn't have the

:00:40. > :00:43.capacity to cope so I wouldn't be here.

:00:44. > :00:48.Plus the disturbing school drama showing the reality of sexu`l

:00:49. > :00:57.grooming. That's as long as you don't want me to tell everyone.

:00:58. > :01:10.Don't tell my mum and dad. @nd music, dance and gay lick greetings

:01:11. > :01:11.on St Patrick's Day. Happy Saint Patrick's day to everybody from

:01:12. > :01:21.Market Square in Nottingham. Good evening and welcome to Monday's

:01:22. > :01:24.programme. First tonight, elergency planners have spent the day

:01:25. > :01:28.assessing the full impact of the huge fire which destroyed the top

:01:29. > :01:32.floor of a multistorey car park in Derby.

:01:33. > :01:36.It's forced the closure of the city's Assembly Rooms for at least

:01:37. > :01:40.eight weeks. Council staff have now begun the mammoth task of contacting

:01:41. > :01:43.thousands of people who'd bought tickets for shows which havd been

:01:44. > :01:52.cancelled. Our reporter Jamds Roberson is in Derby tonight. James,

:01:53. > :01:58.what's the latest information? Good evening. The latest information

:01:59. > :02:02.is that you can clearly see now where the damage started, where the

:02:03. > :02:06.fire started that devastated the car park behind the on Friday nhght It

:02:07. > :02:12.started at that end and sprdad across. It wasn't just a devastating

:02:13. > :02:16.fire for the pas park. It's also had a devastating effect on the

:02:17. > :02:19.programme of events right ndxt door. Hundreds of events have had to be

:02:20. > :02:23.cancelled right up to the mhddle of May.

:02:24. > :02:30.From the tower of Derby Cathedral today, the extent of the dalage is

:02:31. > :02:35.only too clear. Smoke from the huge fire on Friday night has got into

:02:36. > :02:38.the rooms themselves but thd damage the plant room on top of thd car

:02:39. > :02:43.park is even more extensive. Pictures taken by the counchl today

:02:44. > :02:46.show the charred and buckled roof and the wrecked interior of the

:02:47. > :02:57.plant room, including the point where the fire started. Tod`y, in a

:02:58. > :03:03.temporary office in the Guildhall, Derby Life staff were beginning the

:03:04. > :03:06.huge task of bringing lots of customers to tell them shows and

:03:07. > :03:15.events had been cancelled until mid`May. We've had to reschddule.

:03:16. > :03:19.Yes. It is because of the fhre that happened on Friday. One small piece

:03:20. > :03:24.of good fortune was that thd wind blew smoke and flames away from

:03:25. > :03:33.businesses, including from this one right next door. The feeling is that

:03:34. > :03:37.we can open for business as usual. Saturday was a good day of trading.

:03:38. > :03:41.There might be some impact with footfall around the city but we are

:03:42. > :03:46.optimistic going forward. Assessors have been inside the assembly rooms

:03:47. > :03:50.and inside the car park tod`y. The car park will remain closed for the

:03:51. > :03:56.foreseeable future while its structural integrity is est`blished.

:03:57. > :04:04.With me now is Martin wrappdd in from Derby City Council. `` Martin

:04:05. > :04:09.wrapped in. This fire has h`d a serious effect on your programme of

:04:10. > :04:14.events. Absolutely. Due to the fire, we've had to cancel the performances

:04:15. > :04:19.for the next eight weeks and that will take us through until the 1th

:04:20. > :04:25.of May. And you have been phoning people today, haven't you? Ht's a

:04:26. > :04:29.huge task to contact them. Absolutely. Our staff have been

:04:30. > :04:35.working incredibly hard to contact as many people as possible to let

:04:36. > :04:38.them know what has happened and the fact that the assembly rooms will

:04:39. > :04:42.not be operating for the next eight weeks, and to make sure thex are

:04:43. > :04:45.refunded and to make sure they are updated as quickly as possible with

:04:46. > :04:48.any changes that occur over the coming weeks.

:04:49. > :04:55.Do we know any more clearly how this fire broke out? Apart from the fact

:04:56. > :05:01.that started in an air condhtioning unit, we are not fully award.

:05:02. > :05:05.Investigations will take pl`ce. We have specialists in and thex will be

:05:06. > :05:08.going through with a fine tooth comb over the coming weeks to trx to

:05:09. > :05:15.ascertain exactly what happdned how it happened and then to takd it from

:05:16. > :05:27.there. Obviously, because of all the services, the assembly rooms are no

:05:28. > :05:32.longer functioning unfortun`tely. Both the car park behind me and the

:05:33. > :05:38.main road will remain closed for the foreseeable future, which would be

:05:39. > :05:42.`` which will mean large disruption to people.

:05:43. > :05:47.Next tonight, a warning frol a former soldier that cutting mental

:05:48. > :05:50.health funding will cost lives. Phil Bond served as a nurse in Iraq and

:05:51. > :05:55.Afghanistan. He suffered post traumatic stress disorder bdcause of

:05:56. > :05:58.the horrors he'd witnessed. As Jo Healey now reports Phhl says

:05:59. > :06:07.he wouldn't have survived whthout the support from back home.

:06:08. > :06:10.Phil had worked in a hospit`l in Nottingham but nothing prep`red him

:06:11. > :06:15.for the battlefield injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan. The worst was

:06:16. > :06:21.seeing poorly children, children that have been bombed, shot at,

:06:22. > :06:29.stabbed. Of course, back hole, it all took its toll on him. How bad

:06:30. > :06:38.did it get for you? I stood on a bridge and felt I could jump off, to

:06:39. > :06:43.end it all. And at that point, I guess there was a moment of clarity,

:06:44. > :06:48.were I thought, I need to gdt help. He got a lot of help from hhs GP and

:06:49. > :06:51.Nottinghamshire mental health. Without their help, I would not be

:06:52. > :06:57.here, I'm convinced that. The were getting so bad, I needed trdatment.

:06:58. > :07:03.But nationally, mental health services are being cut by 1.8% and

:07:04. > :07:08.that will hit veterans. Mord than 200,000 have served in the war

:07:09. > :07:15.zones. Of them, 40,000 are now likely to struggle with thehr mental

:07:16. > :07:21.health. The charity Combat Stress have already seen a 12% increase in

:07:22. > :07:26.people seeking help. Many of them will have contacted NHS services and

:07:27. > :07:32.they often referred to us. Of those services are not there, refdrrals

:07:33. > :07:36.cannot be made and a veteran can spend even longer suffering in

:07:37. > :07:39.silence. All combat troops should be withdrawn by the end of the year but

:07:40. > :07:49.with mental health services being cut here, Phil fears more pdople

:07:50. > :07:53.will suffer in silence. Still to come: the weather. How long

:07:54. > :07:56.will this spring`like spell last? And in sport, Leicester Citx fans

:07:57. > :07:58.enjoyed Saturday's sunshine and they enjoyed the result even mord. A full

:07:59. > :08:08.match report on the way. Now though, the growing and

:08:09. > :08:14.frightening problem of child sexual exploitation and the dangers that

:08:15. > :08:18.teenagers are facing online. The charity Barnado's says 40% of

:08:19. > :08:24.children they work with havd been targeted via social media. Hf Their

:08:25. > :08:26.campaign coincides with a h`rd hitting play being performed to some

:08:27. > :08:30.8,000 children across Leicestershire showing pupils just how easx it is

:08:31. > :08:40.to become a victim of sexual grooming.

:08:41. > :08:45.Not unless you want me to tdll everyone... Don't tell my mtm and

:08:46. > :08:49.dad. These children are gripped riveted by a powerful drama about a

:08:50. > :08:58.teenage girl unwittingly sucked into an abusive relationship. Thd gritty

:08:59. > :09:02.play is a campaign to highlhght the problem of sexual exploitathon. The

:09:03. > :09:07.issue hit the headlines thrde years ago after a gang in Derby wdre

:09:08. > :09:13.jailed for cruising the strdets and preying on vulnerable girls as young

:09:14. > :09:15.as 12. This plague, performdd to children at this school in

:09:16. > :09:23.Leicester, shows that anyond can be a victim. It's amazing how they get

:09:24. > :09:29.people to do what they want and they manipulate them. I've learnt how

:09:30. > :09:32.people sexually groomed girls and boys and there are different kinds

:09:33. > :09:40.of ways people can get exploited online. I've learnt to be s`fe on

:09:41. > :09:43.these Internet websites and to keep my profile very secure. Havhng

:09:44. > :09:47.watched the play, one of thd most interesting things is that `ny of

:09:48. > :09:51.the children that watch it can see how easy it is. It could happen to

:09:52. > :09:56.anyone of them. It can happdn to anybody at any time. It's shocking

:09:57. > :10:00.and it's very moving actually, the number of students we do get in many

:10:01. > :10:05.different schools who come tp to us and say that something in the play

:10:06. > :10:10.has affected them. It could be the smallest thing online or solething

:10:11. > :10:15.about sending photos. Barnardos save their research reveals hundreds of

:10:16. > :10:19.children are being targeted online. Barnardos today's snapshot survey of

:10:20. > :10:24.its specialist services. We were working with almost 900 children at

:10:25. > :10:27.that point in time and of those about 40% of those young people

:10:28. > :10:31.identified social media as being one of the factors that they had

:10:32. > :10:36.encountered in their abuse. The message to all parents and children

:10:37. > :10:39.is to be aware of the dangers. Two of our biggest manufacttring

:10:40. > :10:42.names say attitudes have got to change if more girls are to take up

:10:43. > :10:46.engineering apprenticeships in the future.

:10:47. > :10:52.Nationally, only 7% of engineering staff are female. Toyota and JCB

:10:53. > :10:56.want the success of a school to be based not just on how many pupils

:10:57. > :11:06.get to University but also on how many become apprentices too.

:11:07. > :11:09.Some of the females involved in the world of engineering, with some of

:11:10. > :11:17.the key players that want to see more of them. Staff from thhs

:11:18. > :11:21.manufacturer came to Toyota to talk about why many girls cannot see

:11:22. > :11:27.themselves working in engindering. Maybe girls are worried abott

:11:28. > :11:30.looking like a boy, if you go into engineering but it's not thd case at

:11:31. > :11:35.all. I still got my nails p`inted. They get messy but you can still be

:11:36. > :11:40.a girl and go into engineerhng. I feel like other females shotld see

:11:41. > :11:46.engineering not as a man's world because it is at dash at thd minute.

:11:47. > :11:50.Engineering is a broad subjdct. Both Toyota and JCB are pushing for more

:11:51. > :11:58.girls to become engineers btt at JCB, there are only three f`ble

:11:59. > :12:01.apprentices at 430. At Toyota, only three out of 70. Both firms admit

:12:02. > :12:06.they have got more to do. Wd've got work to do but I think both schools

:12:07. > :12:09.and business have to come together and we have to give the right level

:12:10. > :12:14.of information to allow young people, both male and femald, to

:12:15. > :12:19.make the right informed dechsion. Generally, not enough girls are

:12:20. > :12:26.doing subjects like science, technology, engineering and maths,

:12:27. > :12:30.what we call stem skills. Ghrls tend to be channelled towards arts

:12:31. > :12:33.subjects. The CBI says schools success should also be meastred on

:12:34. > :12:39.apprentice numbers, not just university places.

:12:40. > :12:43.Business leaders say they'rd determined the East Midlands won't

:12:44. > :12:46.lose out on the HS2 rail link. A report out today suggests the line

:12:47. > :12:50.between Birmingham and Crewd could be completed several years before

:12:51. > :12:53.the rest of the route is finished and that includes the section

:12:54. > :12:57.through the East Midlands. The Chamber of Commerce here saxs it

:12:58. > :13:00.would be unfair for one reghon to benefit before another and wants

:13:01. > :13:11.work to start on both ends of the line simultaneously.

:13:12. > :13:14.A Yorkshire terrier is recovering at an animal shelter in Derby `fter

:13:15. > :13:17.being rescued from a ten foot deep manhole. The six`year`old dog's

:13:18. > :13:20.cries were heard by passers by near a former Rolls`Royce factorx. The

:13:21. > :13:25.RSPCA have named her Peanut. Officers believe she was

:13:26. > :13:30.deliberately abandoned. The area where I found her suggests to me

:13:31. > :13:35.that she was more likely dulped because this waste ground is a large

:13:36. > :13:38.site. It has got a large wall all the way around it with barbdd wire.

:13:39. > :13:45.I can see how the dog would have got in there herself.

:13:46. > :13:49.A system pioneered in Derby, which helps to combat a potentially fatal

:13:50. > :13:53.kidney condition, is to be tsed by hospitals across the countrx.

:13:54. > :13:56.Since it's been used here, doctors say they've had a ten`fold hncrease

:13:57. > :14:01.in the detection of so`calldd Acute Kidney Injury. As well as s`ving

:14:02. > :14:10.lives it's hoped it could also help save the NHS billions.

:14:11. > :14:16.It's a simple blood test but can also prove to be a life`savdr.

:14:17. > :14:20.Everyone who is admitted here to the Royal Derby Hospital is now screened

:14:21. > :14:24.for a potentially deadly colplaint called acute kidney injury. The

:14:25. > :14:30.function of the kidney decrdases quite radically over hours or days

:14:31. > :14:35.but that does have a signifhcant effect on the rest of their health.

:14:36. > :14:37.How you feeling? Don has bedn diagnosed with it. He is now in

:14:38. > :14:44.hospital for more tests and treatment. Very grateful for the

:14:45. > :14:49.speed when someone realised there was something going on. I jtst hope

:14:50. > :14:56.to get to the bottom of it `nd get into the garden again. This patient

:14:57. > :15:00.has acute injury... What happens here is being held up as an example

:15:01. > :15:04.of good practice. Hospitals across the country are being urged to set

:15:05. > :15:08.up a similar electronic warning system for the condition. On an

:15:09. > :15:17.annual basis, we have around 40 0 episodes of acute kidney injury in

:15:18. > :15:20.the hospital. We know that prior to introducing these electronic alerts,

:15:21. > :15:24.only about a 10th of these cases were being picked up. In thd past,

:15:25. > :15:29.many of those patients would have needed dialysis. Treating stfferers

:15:30. > :15:33.of acute kidney injury currdntly costs the NHS ?3 billion a xear So

:15:34. > :15:44.it is hoped testing one small sample of blood could save much of that

:15:45. > :15:50.money and save many lives as well. We lead the way so often.

:15:51. > :15:57.Coming up: a perfect Paddy's Day. The East Midlands turns gredn as the

:15:58. > :15:59.Irish celebrate a special d`te in the calendar with song, dance and a

:16:00. > :16:06.tipple or two. We're always being told to dat a

:16:07. > :16:08.varied and balanced diet but it s not always that easy, espechally

:16:09. > :16:12.when you're living on a tight budget. So one City Council has

:16:13. > :16:15.stepped in to help by spendhng a whole week targeting poor nttrition

:16:16. > :16:18.in Leicester and it started by giving away hundreds of fred,

:16:19. > :16:28.healthy breakfasts as Victoria Hicks reports.

:16:29. > :16:37.A healthy start to the day here at this nursery. These children are

:16:38. > :16:41.amongst 1500 under fives who would be getting a free breakfast this

:16:42. > :16:46.week. It's good to see what healthy breakfasts look like. Healthy eating

:16:47. > :16:50.can be so expensive to just a few ideas can really help the growth and

:16:51. > :16:59.development of the kids. Edtcation for life. I hope there are not faced

:17:00. > :17:04.with obesity. And unhealthy eating is a real problem in Leicester.

:17:05. > :17:09.Five`year`old children in the city have the most rotten teeth hn the

:17:10. > :17:14.country. By the age of 11, one in three children in Leicester will be

:17:15. > :17:20.obese. And as adults, only ` quarter eat the recommended five a day of

:17:21. > :17:23.fruit and vegetables. This hs lasting a week. The point is to give

:17:24. > :17:27.children across the city a good healthy start to the day and

:17:28. > :17:31.encourage them to have fun with healthy eating. So this project is

:17:32. > :17:32.all about sowing the seeds of healthy eating for the next

:17:33. > :17:56.generation. It's becoming a cruise to Promotion

:17:57. > :18:02.from the Championship. Leicdster City are now an astonishing 17

:18:03. > :18:06.points clear of third place. Mathematically, they could be a

:18:07. > :18:09.Premier League side by the dnd of March. On Saturday I went to watch

:18:10. > :18:20.them play Blackpool and found nothing would stop the Foxes

:18:21. > :18:26.enjoying the sunshine. The sun is out. It's gloriots. What

:18:27. > :18:32.a perfect day for a perfect match! The fans can only be happy with the

:18:33. > :18:36.progress of the Foxes. We are doing well. But no one is taking `ny

:18:37. > :18:41.chances on the foxes climb to the top. We will get promoted this

:18:42. > :18:45.season, definitely. Leicestdr started with a kind of confhdence

:18:46. > :18:50.that goes with a team in thdir position. What didn't arrivd was a

:18:51. > :18:56.goal. Instead, the visitors came up with the opener.

:18:57. > :19:02.There was no hint that is Ldicester were going to roll over. Whdn it

:19:03. > :19:07.finally paid off for them, ht was really special. No keeper expects to

:19:08. > :19:12.be beaten like that. With ehght minutes left, the goal`scordr turned

:19:13. > :19:20.provider for the goal that took Leicester into the lead. Substitute

:19:21. > :19:23.striker Phillips had three decent chances and it was the most

:19:24. > :19:29.difficult which found the b`ck of the net. Leicester 's domin`nce is

:19:30. > :19:34.still unchallenged. The citx players had to read the writing on the wall

:19:35. > :19:36.and they did it. They had to fight back and work hard. This is how

:19:37. > :19:45.champions win games. The team is so focused right now. We

:19:46. > :19:49.believe each other. We know how good we are as a team. I don't know how

:19:50. > :19:56.many points we can get, it doesn't matter but we want to finish the

:19:57. > :20:02.season with a positive mindset. Another good day done. The sun looks

:20:03. > :20:04.like it is setting on Leicester s Championships day.

:20:05. > :20:08.Derby County had to settle for a goaless draw at Reading but it was a

:20:09. > :20:12.winning night for them at the Football League Awards. Two of their

:20:13. > :20:17.younger players walked away with awards, as Kirsty Edwards rdports.

:20:18. > :20:21.It isn't just his hair which gets will noticed. His performances for

:20:22. > :20:25.Derby had seen the 18`year`old regularly linked with a movd to the

:20:26. > :20:30.Premier league. And now, he is the football league's then playdr of the

:20:31. > :20:34.year. He couldn't go to his last dash to last night 's event so it

:20:35. > :20:39.was picked up by the club 's chief executive. He is a fantastic talent.

:20:40. > :20:45.We think of him extremely hhghly as Derby, as everyone else does. We are

:20:46. > :20:51.pleased his development continues. I'm thrilled for him. It's great

:20:52. > :20:55.recognition for the academy, which has also produced Mason Bennett who

:20:56. > :21:00.was named the apprentice of the year. Derby are not short of awards

:21:01. > :21:04.at the moment but on the pitch, they are short of goals. Saturdax's game

:21:05. > :21:09.at Reading, the fourth match in a row they've failed to find the net.

:21:10. > :21:14.It certainly wasn't for the lack of trying. Chances came and went. They

:21:15. > :21:18.almost paid for it when Reading got the ball into the net. Luckhly for

:21:19. > :21:23.Derby, the referee spotted ht was a handball. We couldn't find the

:21:24. > :21:33.finishing touch. They had a couple of chances but had a few before

:21:34. > :21:38.that. Both managers were scratching their heads as to why it was that

:21:39. > :21:41.scoreline. Derby are hopeful this player could be available for

:21:42. > :21:46.Saturday's big clash with Nottingham Forest.

:21:47. > :21:49.Well, as for Nottingham Fordst there's just no let up in their

:21:50. > :21:52.injury problems. Andy Reid was back leading them out

:21:53. > :21:56.against Doncaster after his hernia operation. But he limped off after
