:00:00. > :00:18.interview with And now the news for the East

:00:19. > :00:21.Midlands, I'm Anne Davies. First tonight, it started with two hours

:00:22. > :00:26.of botched surgery, it ended with months of poor health that cost a

:00:27. > :00:32.grandmother her life. A locum consultant carried out gall bladder

:00:33. > :00:35.surgery in the wrong area. Lalitaben Patel suffered rain damage because

:00:36. > :00:39.of mistakes during gall bladder surgery. The 71`year`old died seven

:00:40. > :00:54.months after the operation, which was performed at the Leicester Royal

:00:55. > :00:56.Infirmary. It was two hours before operating threatre staff noticed

:00:57. > :00:59.things were going wrong and called in someone senior to take over.

:01:00. > :01:03.Managers have apologised to the family. Our reporter has been

:01:04. > :01:10.following the case, this should not have happened, should it? That is

:01:11. > :01:16.right. There were three holes made any major artery that blessed to the

:01:17. > :01:27.haemorrhage and it was a result of that that this woman did. The

:01:28. > :01:33.hospital trust say they have brought in checks to make sure local doctors

:01:34. > :01:36.are up to the same standards as full`time staff. Tonight the

:01:37. > :01:45.Department of Health have told us they want to have much offer checks

:01:46. > :01:51.carried out on locums. The GMC are still investigating this surgeon. He

:01:52. > :01:56.cannot operate in the private sector and if he does laparoscopic

:01:57. > :02:01.operations, they have to be done under supervision. The investigation

:02:02. > :02:04.into his case is ongoing. Customers have reacted angrily to the news

:02:05. > :02:06.their local building society branches are to close. The

:02:07. > :02:09.Nationwide says shutting its Derbyshire Building Society branches

:02:10. > :02:16.is a "logical" decision. It means the brand will disappear from the

:02:17. > :02:21.High Street. Simon Hare reports. This woman has been using her local

:02:22. > :02:28.branch of the Derbyshire Building Society since childhood but she has

:02:29. > :02:33.just been told it is going to close. We have always had this building

:02:34. > :02:37.society, it has always been there. In the current economic climate you

:02:38. > :02:47.cannot buy brand loyalty and they are throwing it away. Nationwide

:02:48. > :02:52.merged with the Derbyshire in 2008. The brand was in doubt following the

:02:53. > :02:56.financial crisis. The number of branches did close but now it has

:02:57. > :03:02.been announced the further ten across the county will shut with 17

:03:03. > :03:09.others being merged or rebranded as nationwide. When other branches shut

:03:10. > :03:13.in recent years nationwide said customers did not have far to travel

:03:14. > :03:20.to places like this one which is also no closing. In a statement it

:03:21. > :03:26.said that the closures and rebranding was the next logical step

:03:27. > :03:29.in integrating its businesses. The Derbyshire brand is expected to

:03:30. > :03:36.disappear from the high street over the course of one weekend later this

:03:37. > :03:40.year. Derby City Council has saved more than a ?100,000 a year in

:03:41. > :03:42.pothole work after taking over the job from a private company. The

:03:43. > :03:46.council's own team have been repairing 90 potholes a week on

:03:47. > :03:49.average compared to the 55 a week fixed by the private company,

:03:50. > :03:54.Carillion. The move has saved the authority ?110,000 a year. Carillion

:03:55. > :04:01.says its roads maintenance service was "robust and efficient". The

:04:02. > :04:04.University of Nottingham will celebrate the tenth anniversary of

:04:05. > :04:07.its Ningbo operation in China this year. The idea for a Chinese campus

:04:08. > :04:10.came from the business relationship between the University's former vice

:04:11. > :04:16.Chancellor and one of China's top nuclear scientists. The Ningbo

:04:17. > :04:22.campus was formally opened in 2006 and is now home to almost 6,000

:04:23. > :04:26.students. A supermarket has promised to try to move a Nottingham cash

:04:27. > :04:31.machine ` after it proved rather more challenging for customers than

:04:32. > :04:39.usual. The unique ATM's been built on the side of a road in Basford.

:04:40. > :04:44.Carolyn Moses went to see it. The cash machine, the way we check our

:04:45. > :04:50.bank balance and get hold of notes. But this one is proving a little

:04:51. > :04:57.harder than most to use. This cash machine Bierley comes up to my knee

:04:58. > :05:03.and I am not all, it is 15 inches off of the ground. That means you

:05:04. > :05:10.have to go that little bit further to get your cash. You have to really

:05:11. > :05:17.bend down to have a look at it. It is a bit of the pain. It is all

:05:18. > :05:22.right for small or disabled people because they find it easier to get

:05:23. > :05:28.to. The folder is quite dirty and you have to bend down, it is not the

:05:29. > :05:34.easiest one to use. It causes strain on the knees and ankles, it would be

:05:35. > :05:42.better if it was higher. It does suit this pint sized punter and

:05:43. > :05:47.Sainsbury's says it has not had any customer complaints. They now have

:05:48. > :05:53.plans to relocate what is written's blows machine and then cashpoint

:05:54. > :05:56.customers can walk tall. On to tonight's football, and there's a

:05:57. > :05:58.full set of results. In the Championship Ipswich beat Derby

:05:59. > :06:02.County 2`1. League leaders Leicester City had a 1`1 draw with Yeovil. And

:06:03. > :06:05.Nottingham Forest, under caretaker manager Gary Brazil lost to Charlton

:06:06. > :06:08.1`0. In league One, it finished Crewe one, Notts County three. And

:06:09. > :06:15.in League Two, Mansfield beat Hartlepool 4`2. In Ice Hockey, it's

:06:16. > :06:17.the been the second leg of the semi final of the Challenge Cup. It

:06:18. > :06:23.finished Nottingham Panthers four, Belfast one. Panthers were three

:06:24. > :06:38.goals down from the first leg, so that's 6`6 on aggregate. Panthers

:06:39. > :06:45.won any penalty shoot out. Now the weather. We are in between weather

:06:46. > :06:50.fronts at the moment but we have another one pushing in for tomorrow

:06:51. > :06:55.morning. We will start dry and bright with some sunshine for the

:06:56. > :07:00.morning. We are starting dry tonight and we will remain dry for the rest

:07:01. > :07:04.of the night. Some holes in the cloud so temperatures will fall

:07:05. > :07:10.away. Some of us close to freezing by morning. The dry and bright start

:07:11. > :07:14.for many of us with some sunshine during the morning hours but the

:07:15. > :07:19.cloud will thicken and we will have scattered showers by the afternoon.

:07:20. > :07:24.Some of these could be wintry by the afternoon. Wherever you are it is

:07:25. > :07:31.going to feel cold in those winds. The outlook is for conditions to

:07:32. > :07:33.stay cool and showery for the rest of the week.

:07:34. > :07:37.might be wintry. Feeling chilly at 10 degrees. The outlook, it stays

:07:38. > :07:42.chilly and temperatures look like they will pick up towards the eight

:07:43. > :07:46.-- weekend. In early spring, a bit of sunshine

:07:47. > :07:51.makes the difference. Today we had some sunshine in the far east of the

:07:52. > :07:55.UK and in the far west. In Northern Ireland and East Anglia,

:07:56. > :08:00.temperatures climbed into the teens. But for most of us, it was gloomy

:08:01. > :08:04.and temperatures were at sixes and sevens. Single figure temperatures

:08:05. > :08:09.will feature heavily over the next few days. We are already seeing the

:08:10. > :08:13.weather coming in from the east pushing the weather to the West so

:08:14. > :08:20.we will see showers continuing in the night. Isolated showers. Most

:08:21. > :08:24.towns and cities just about avoiding a frost but in rural areas we will

:08:25. > :08:29.seek pockets of frost and fog patches for the morning. Some

:08:30. > :08:33.showers across the West but it will brighten up in the West, however in

:08:34. > :08:36.the East the cloud thickens, the winds pick up and out rakes of rain

:08:37. > :08:42.coming from the North Sea. It will be a different day across East

:08:43. > :08:47.Anglia. Feeling much colder. Five or six Celsius with outbreaks of rain

:08:48. > :08:48.and some of the rain could be on the heavy side at times across the
