:00:00. > :00:13.Dan, thank you. That's all from us.

:00:14. > :00:18.Now the news for the East Midlands. I'm Geeta Pendse.

:00:19. > :00:21.A murder trial was told that 'bad feeling' and long`running rivalry

:00:22. > :00:27.led to a street confrontation and the fatal stabbing of a football

:00:28. > :00:31.coach in Leicester. The victim, Antoin Akpom, was said to have led a

:00:32. > :00:37.group of men from a nearby gym and was carrying a dumbbell when he was

:00:38. > :00:39.attacked, as Quentin Rayner reports. 20`year`old Antoin Akpom was

:00:40. > :00:45.described today by a close friend who tended to him after he was

:00:46. > :00:49.stabbed as an all`round great guy. But for a year there had been a bad

:00:50. > :00:52.feeling between him and Abdul Hakim. In the early evening of

:00:53. > :00:55.September the 12th last year, the football coach spotted him and

:00:56. > :00:57.another 19`year`old, Hussain Hussain, in Kent Street. After an

:00:58. > :01:02.initial confrontation, Antoin Akpom ran to a nearby gym. Seconds later,

:01:03. > :01:06.he ran back with a group of nine men he ran back with a group of nine men

:01:07. > :01:10.to confront the teenagers again. Witnesses say they saw the football

:01:11. > :01:13.coach carrying a dumbbell and one of his group shouted, you're a dead

:01:14. > :01:18.man, and appeared to be the aggressors. The court heard Mr Akpom

:01:19. > :01:21.was seen exchanging punches with the two teenagers before emerging with a

:01:22. > :01:27.blood stain on his upper back and then collapsing in the street. After

:01:28. > :01:30.fleeing to London, the 19`year`olds were arrested. Both deny murder. The

:01:31. > :01:34.prosecution claim Hussain Hussain wielded the knife but he claims

:01:35. > :01:39.Abdul Hakim told him he'd stabbed Antoin Akpom because he was scared

:01:40. > :01:44.after he swung a dumbbell at him. Abdul Hakim says he never saw a

:01:45. > :01:47.knife. Mr Hakim told the police he intended to return to Leicester

:01:48. > :01:52.after hearing about a fire two doors down from his mother's home. Four

:01:53. > :01:56.members of the Taufiq family were killed. The jury was told the

:01:57. > :02:01.tragedy was that the occupants had nothing to do with the Kent Street

:02:02. > :02:04.incident. Richard Latham QC said whoever did this, if it had anything

:02:05. > :02:11.to do with the stabbing, got the wrong house. It was a ghastly,

:02:12. > :02:20.ghastly event. The trial is expected to last just over two weeks.

:02:21. > :02:26.Loneliness is as damaging to the long term health of the elderly as

:02:27. > :02:31.smoking or obesity. That's the claim being made by Age UK. Today the

:02:32. > :02:36.charity held a conference in Nottingham to give advice to anyone

:02:37. > :02:39.struggling to cope on their own. 64`year`old Colin Harrison was

:02:40. > :02:42.there. He lives alone in sheltered accommodation and says he found

:02:43. > :02:45.giving up work very tough to deal with.

:02:46. > :02:53.I had a lot of issues with depression. Serious issues with

:02:54. > :02:57.depression. I do think that work provides structure to your life and

:02:58. > :03:00.gives you the reason to get up and to go out and do things. And

:03:01. > :03:05.unfortunately when you retire you've then got to go out and find those

:03:06. > :03:09.things for yourself. With me now is Maria Cooke of Age UK

:03:10. > :03:22.in Nottinghamshire. What's the scale of this problem? It is pretty big in

:03:23. > :03:26.Nottinghamshire. 100,000 people use TV as their main form of company and

:03:27. > :03:33.39,000 people in Nottinghamshire alone see people less than once a

:03:34. > :03:38.week. How is the campaign hoping to reach people? We want to encourage

:03:39. > :03:44.people to reconnect with their neighbours or family. It can be as

:03:45. > :03:54.simple as smiling, saying hello or contacting your family more. It can

:03:55. > :03:59.really make a difference. Is there are long`term impact of free don't

:04:00. > :04:06.look at the situation? Yes, increased cost of the NHS. People

:04:07. > :04:11.would use doctors more and are more likely to develop dementia. In

:04:12. > :04:14.addition to the fact that being lonely is a very miserable state to

:04:15. > :04:20.be in and people need help to do that. It will save us money in the

:04:21. > :04:29.long run but it will make us all feel better in the meantime. What

:04:30. > :04:37.would you like to see? People smiling at their neighbours more.

:04:38. > :04:41.A schoolboy's been given a new lease of life thanks to pioneering surgery

:04:42. > :04:44.on his spine. The parents of Thaine Marston, who's from Long Eaton,

:04:45. > :04:46.fought for him to get the new procedure after discovering his

:04:47. > :04:49.spine was curved. Jo Healey reports. Doing this was something Thaine

:04:50. > :04:53.feared may never happen. He was diagnosed with early onset

:04:54. > :04:57.scoliosis. It felt like a strain on my back, but I also felt upset and

:04:58. > :05:04.hurt emotionally because I would not believe that it could happen to me.

:05:05. > :05:09.But it did. You can see here the curves in his spine. Traditionally

:05:10. > :05:14.he would have endured many operations, his spine fused and

:05:15. > :05:20.unable to grow much. But this surgeon agreed to fit Thaine with

:05:21. > :05:23.new magnetic rods. He basically has something like a scaffolding which

:05:24. > :05:34.holds his spine upright, as well as allowing us to distract these rods

:05:35. > :05:38.according to his growth. We can locate them on the x`ray and put a

:05:39. > :05:41.strong magnet on the skin and that causes the motorised section of the

:05:42. > :05:50.rods to lengthen. So no operations and Thaine it can move and crucially

:05:51. > :06:05.grow. I feel really happy. I think I have been one of the luckiest boys

:06:06. > :06:08.in the UK. He could have been in a wheelchair. I could have been

:06:09. > :06:11.pushing a wheelchair around. But with this magnetic spine he has got,

:06:12. > :06:15.it is fantastic. It is pioneering work and that is what we are trying

:06:16. > :06:18.to push forward at the Queen's Medical Centre.

:06:19. > :06:21.On to football and there's one result from tonight. It's in the

:06:22. > :06:25.Championship ` league`leaders Leicester City drew with Wigan

:06:26. > :06:30.Athletic 2`2. That's your news. So, it's goodbye

:06:31. > :06:43.from me but with your weather now, here's Kaye.

:06:44. > :06:49.It has been a cracking start and it is not over yet. It will be even

:06:50. > :06:52.warmer tomorrow. It could get up to 19 Celsius. It has been a fine

:06:53. > :06:56.evening. warmer tomorrow. It could get up to

:06:57. > :07:00.19 Celsius. It has been a Staying in drive for the first part of the

:07:01. > :07:08.night. We will see some showers in their early allies. They will be

:07:09. > :07:14.isolated but a few could be heavy. Tomorrow morning, showers move

:07:15. > :07:23.northwards. The cloud will break up to give us some sunshine. This will

:07:24. > :07:30.vary through the day. Many of us will have a gorgeous afternoon. As

:07:31. > :07:32.you can see, it will become a little more cloudy and

:07:33. > :07:40.the afternoon. The outlook, rather cloudy with some rain on Thursday.

:07:41. > :07:45.Good evening. Before we get to the weather details, little bit about

:07:46. > :07:50.the pollution which we have been talking about in the weather reports

:07:51. > :07:53.over the last couple of days. The pollution levels actually during the

:07:54. > :07:58.course of Wednesday, tomorrow, will be very high across a large swathe

:07:59. > :08:03.of the country. A couple of reasons why this is happening. During today,

:08:04. > :08:07.high levels of pollution across parts of East Anglia but you can see

:08:08. > :08:11.how extensive it becomes tomorrow. One of the reasons this is happening

:08:12. > :08:15.is because of a light wind dragging pollution from here in our direction

:08:16. > :08:21.and on top of that, our own pollution from industry, industrial

:08:22. > :08:24.pollution, but by Thursday, the weather pattern will change so we

:08:25. > :08:32.think the pollution levels will tend to go down a little bit. Certainly

:08:33. > :08:35.by Thursday. On top of that, we also have the dust which has been driven

:08:36. > :08:36.in from the Sahara Desert
