:00:00. > :00:07.This is East Midlands Today with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.

:00:08. > :00:22.Tonight: A father's pride in his son, who's died on active duty.

:00:23. > :00:26.Rakesh Chauhan was one of five servicemen killed in a helicopter

:00:27. > :00:32.crash in Afghanistan. Also tonight: a murder trial jury is

:00:33. > :00:39.brought to the scene where and her three children died in a fire.

:00:40. > :00:45.And the able engineers helping to change the way we travel. What we do

:00:46. > :00:49.as engineers is convert raw materials into something like this,

:00:50. > :00:53.which is infinitely more valuable and creates genuine wealth of the

:00:54. > :00:59.country. And touchline euphoria. Goals that

:01:00. > :01:09.could have sealed Notts County's greatest game.

:01:10. > :01:13.Welcome to Monday's programme. First tonight, a father has paid a moving

:01:14. > :01:17.tribute to his son who's died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

:01:18. > :01:20.Flight Lieutenant Rakesh Chauhan, from Leicestershire, was one of five

:01:21. > :01:24.servicemen killed when their Lynx came down at the weekend. The

:01:25. > :01:28.29`year`old worked in the RAF's Intelligence Branch.

:01:29. > :01:31.And today, in an exclusive television interview, his father,

:01:32. > :01:43.Kishor Chauhan spoke to us from the family home in Cropston. Victoria

:01:44. > :01:48.Hicks has compiled this report. Rakesh was very passionate in what

:01:49. > :01:52.he did. Everything he did, he would want to do it to the best of his

:01:53. > :02:01.ability, he would want it done in a particular way, he was very

:02:02. > :02:08.meticulous. He was very lively and he was a natural leader of men. He

:02:09. > :02:14.was very straightforward. He always had this passion to be in the air

:02:15. > :02:23.force. Either in the cadets or in University, and when he left

:02:24. > :02:27.university he joined the air force. When he was on a tour overseas, you

:02:28. > :02:33.are always concerned for their safety. But we felt that he was

:02:34. > :02:44.safe. The first one was the most difficult tour. But by the third

:02:45. > :02:51.trip we were reconciled to the fact that he was going to be safe. And

:02:52. > :02:57.unfortunately this tragic accident happened. We are not sure of the

:02:58. > :03:03.details yet. All I know is that the helicopter came down near Kandahar

:03:04. > :03:10.airport, we do not know what the cause was. Only last Saturday my

:03:11. > :03:19.wife talk to him on Skype, saw his face after three months. We were

:03:20. > :03:29.very pleased to see him, and that is the last we spoke to him for we had

:03:30. > :03:37.so many dreams for him. He had his life planned, and unfortunately, it

:03:38. > :03:41.did not turn out the way we had wanted and the way he had planned.

:03:42. > :03:49.Rakesh was very passionate about his work, he was very passionate about

:03:50. > :03:55.the country. He was proud of being British, and he was very proud to

:03:56. > :04:01.have done something for his country. He has now paid the

:04:02. > :04:04.ultimate price. The father of Rakesh Chauhan.

:04:05. > :04:06.Still to come: Light at the end of the tunnel for Derby's trouble`hit

:04:07. > :04:09.Al`Madinah Free School. Inspectors say the teaching of

:04:10. > :04:11.primary pupils is improving but there's to be no reprieve for the

:04:12. > :04:24.secondary school. Details later. The jury in a murder trial left the

:04:25. > :04:27.courtroom today to see for themselves the spot where a mother

:04:28. > :04:31.and her three children died in a devastating house fire.

:04:32. > :04:34.A gang of eight men are accused of the alleged botched arson attack

:04:35. > :04:43.which claimed the family's lives last September. Sarah Teale has been

:04:44. > :04:48.at the scene in Leicester. The murder trial was taken away from

:04:49. > :04:54.the formality of Nottingham Crown Court to visit the scene of the

:04:55. > :04:58.crime today. The jury, and the legal teams have been brought here to see

:04:59. > :05:06.for themselves some of the key areas in this trial, and the house itself.

:05:07. > :05:12.Where the family and her children died. Eight defendants are on trial,

:05:13. > :05:18.accused of deliberately setting fire to the property in a revenge attack

:05:19. > :05:23.on the wrong house. The jury, who we cannot identify, were watched by the

:05:24. > :05:29.judge, and the prosecution barrister. The jury spent several

:05:30. > :05:34.minutes looking at the floor is placed on the doorstep of the

:05:35. > :05:38.boarded`up house, they had heard last week oh petrol had been poured

:05:39. > :05:41.through the letterbox and ignited. The jury had been told that the

:05:42. > :05:47.defendants drove past the house here in two cars with the headlights off.

:05:48. > :05:53.The vehicles parked up around the corner at the bottom of the road for

:05:54. > :05:59.eight defendants walked back up the hill and set fire to the house. The

:06:00. > :06:04.jury was shown a house two doors from the house. The alleged intended

:06:05. > :06:08.target for the arson attack. This was where the mother of one of the

:06:09. > :06:16.men lived, who the gang believed was involved in an attack on their

:06:17. > :06:20.friend. The jury were taken to Kent Street, where he had been fatally

:06:21. > :06:26.stabbed seven hours before the fire last September. The defendants,

:06:27. > :06:30.seven men and one youth, all deny four separate counts of murder. The

:06:31. > :06:34.trial continues. Police have confirmed a man died

:06:35. > :06:37.after fire broke out at a modern retirement village in

:06:38. > :06:40.Nottinghamshire over the weekend. Around two dozen people were moved

:06:41. > :06:44.from their homes at Larkhill in Clifton. The fire, at a bungalow

:06:45. > :06:48.within the complex, was quickly brought under control. The blaze is

:06:49. > :06:52.not being treated as suspicious but investigations are continuing to

:06:53. > :06:56.discover the cause. David Cameron is facing a backbench

:06:57. > :07:00.rebellion in tonight's vote on the High Speed Two rail link. The route

:07:01. > :07:03.between London and Leeds would run through parts of the East Midlands

:07:04. > :07:06.with a station built at Toton. Earlier today, campaigners opposed

:07:07. > :07:11.to the project protested outside Parliament. At least 30 Tory MPs,

:07:12. > :07:13.including Andrew Bridgen who represents North West

:07:14. > :07:19.Leicestershire, are expected to vote against or abstain during the bill's

:07:20. > :07:23.second reading. The parents of a Leicestershire man

:07:24. > :07:27.who died shortly after being allowed home from Stafford Hospital say they

:07:28. > :07:32.hope to learn the truth at a new inquest into his death.

:07:33. > :07:35.Janet and Frank Robinson fought for years to get the original inquest

:07:36. > :07:39.verdict into the death of their son John quashed.

:07:40. > :07:43.Our Health Correspondent Rob Sissons is at the new hearing being held in

:07:44. > :07:53.Leicester. Rob, what have John's parents been hearing today? Today,

:07:54. > :07:58.we heard a picture about the pressures of Accident and Emergency

:07:59. > :08:02.at Stafford. This was back in 2006, right in the middle of the hospital

:08:03. > :08:07.scandal that we have heard so much about. But the coroner said she

:08:08. > :08:11.would not be focusing on the various reports about the poor care that had

:08:12. > :08:14.been carried out. She would be instead focusing on the facts of

:08:15. > :08:19.this particular case. One of the big questions, why was this young man

:08:20. > :08:24.allowed home, back to Leicestershire, with problems but he

:08:25. > :08:29.later died from a few hours later? It is eight years since that day,

:08:30. > :08:36.and the full facts of the case proved difficult for some of the

:08:37. > :08:40.witnesses the recalled today. John Robinson loved the outdoors. The

:08:41. > :08:44.20`year`old was miles from his home in Leicestershire on his mountain

:08:45. > :08:50.bike when he came off. Stafford Hospital was nearest. Today's

:08:51. > :08:54.inquest heard the A unit was understaffed. There was poor

:08:55. > :08:59.record`keeping in his notes, making it hard to know exactly what

:09:00. > :09:03.happened. John's parents, who fought for the new second hearing, at the

:09:04. > :09:11.latest inquest, will give more answers. We want more evidence and

:09:12. > :09:15.an honest and truthful conclusion. John's first inquest lasted barely

:09:16. > :09:21.90 minutes, and the coroner called two witnesses. At that time, we were

:09:22. > :09:30.unaware of the surroundings around John's death. One of John's friends,

:09:31. > :09:34.seen here with the red backpack, said he saw staff rushed off their

:09:35. > :09:40.feet at Stafford Hospital. He had to go and find them. John's appearance

:09:41. > :09:50.CV or it to her son `` the parents say they or it to their son. He was

:09:51. > :09:58.known as the big friendly giant. He liked to go and enjoy himself. But

:09:59. > :10:02.he worked really hard. Staffing at Stafford Hospital's A has improved

:10:03. > :10:08.dramatically, the hearing was told, following the scandal there.

:10:09. > :10:14.Today we heard from the nurse in charge back from that day in 2006,

:10:15. > :10:16.Tracy White. She said that she recognised the injuries were

:10:17. > :10:22.possibly life`threatening, but she had not put in the notes very much,

:10:23. > :10:27.and asked why regular observations were not going to be done to the

:10:28. > :10:31.patient, the coroner suggested, might it be they were not asked for?

:10:32. > :10:37.We will be hearing from more staff nurses come doctors from Stafford

:10:38. > :10:41.Hospital during this case, which is expected to last most of this week.

:10:42. > :10:44.Thank you. Police are appealing for help in

:10:45. > :10:47.piecing together the last moments of a cyclist found unconscious in a

:10:48. > :10:52.ditch in Ilkeston. The 49`year`old man was taken to the Queen's Medical

:10:53. > :10:55.Centre where he died. Officers don't yet know the cause of death but

:10:56. > :10:59.aren't treating it as suspicious. They want to hear from anyone who

:11:00. > :11:03.may have seen a cyclist at the junction of No Man's Lane and Potato

:11:04. > :11:07.Pit Lane in Dale Abbey yesterday morning.

:11:08. > :11:10.Mining communities can now apply for a share of a ?1 million fund for

:11:11. > :11:14.projects operating near former coalfields. The Coalfields

:11:15. > :11:17.Regeneration Trust is distributing grants of up to ?10,000 to community

:11:18. > :11:25.organisations and social enterprises. The grants programme

:11:26. > :11:27.was set up in 2011 to develop grass roots activities that have a

:11:28. > :11:32.positive impact on coalfields communities.

:11:33. > :11:35.The troubled Al`Madinah free school in Derby is making "reasonable

:11:36. > :11:41.progress" towards getting out of special measures, according to a new

:11:42. > :11:45.inspector's report. Teaching of primary pupils is said

:11:46. > :11:50.to be improving but the secondary school can't be rescued and will

:11:51. > :11:57.close this summer. Here's Mike O'Sullivan.

:11:58. > :11:59.Back to school on Monday morning, and back to better news for the

:12:00. > :12:05.troubled Al`Madinah Free School in Derby. Ofsted now says it is making

:12:06. > :12:12.reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures. They

:12:13. > :12:22.have made changes, let's see how it goes this term. Will you take your

:12:23. > :12:25.kids out of school? No. She will definitely not be coming here. It is

:12:26. > :12:30.the biggest mistake I have ever done letting her come here. I struggle

:12:31. > :12:35.with that, that is what she has done at the end of this year. I am not

:12:36. > :12:41.happy with that. Had a tough year, but onwards and upwards, definitely.

:12:42. > :12:48.Ofsted inspector the school in March, saying that: Although there

:12:49. > :12:52.is some praise for the primary school based here, the report says

:12:53. > :12:56.that progress made by the secondary school is far too slow. The

:12:57. > :12:59.secondary school will be shut down this summer, something ordered by

:13:00. > :13:05.the government earlier this year. The school is now being guided by an

:13:06. > :13:11.outside educational trust. I am doing what I am doing just as much

:13:12. > :13:15.for the parents as for the pupils. Following this Ofsted monitoring

:13:16. > :13:17.report, can have a much higher degree of certainty that their

:13:18. > :13:23.children are going be increasingly well taught and be successful at

:13:24. > :13:25.this school. The school has two years to come out of special

:13:26. > :13:33.measures. Still to come this evening: A look

:13:34. > :13:36.at the weather for the week ahead. We have got typical spring weather

:13:37. > :13:43.on the way this week, starting with a promise, a bit of a soggy middle,

:13:44. > :13:51.ending it with a bit of a blow. All the details later on in the

:13:52. > :13:57.programme. No soggy medals in the sport. Here

:13:58. > :14:01.is Colin. Absolutely. I knew that was coming.

:14:02. > :14:04.Coming up, you'd have to be made of stone not to love Notts County's

:14:05. > :14:07.celebrations as they pursue the great escape. We were there on

:14:08. > :14:10.Saturday and that's coming up. But plenty going on in the Championship,

:14:11. > :14:17.including the end of Forest's play`off hopes.

:14:18. > :14:20.It was the one significant issue still standing, and of Nottingham

:14:21. > :14:23.Forest had won at Bournemouth, they would still be in with a play`off

:14:24. > :14:32.showed. But they were poor and punished. Calls either side of

:14:33. > :14:38.half`time put them two behind. Another opportunity was missed to

:14:39. > :14:47.level things. And the burying of this penalty kick finished it off.

:14:48. > :14:51.The final goal was sold in the wind. That was the best we played since I

:14:52. > :14:56.have been in charge. On the day, they were too good for us. Stuart

:14:57. > :14:58.Pearce will take over the side next season.

:14:59. > :15:03.Now, Leicester and Derby. The fate of both is decided. One promoted,

:15:04. > :15:07.one in the play`offs. But the Foxes want to break the 100 point barrier.

:15:08. > :15:17.And Derby want to set a club record for their best`ever season.

:15:18. > :15:23.Fiennes Taylor Fletcher in the box. It's in the back of the net. A goal

:15:24. > :15:28.of champion winning quality. Into the box, the header. He scores. The

:15:29. > :15:36.inspirational Leicester City captain. They are well on their way

:15:37. > :15:41.to 100 points. They are playing further places next year, if you

:15:42. > :15:48.like. Still on goal, has he scored? He has. Up goes the head, headed

:15:49. > :15:57.away, he shoots and scores. Controls it brilliantly. Here is Forsyth.

:15:58. > :16:06.Into the back post, men arriving, headed in. A shot from distance,

:16:07. > :16:09.what a strike! The fans were terrific again today. Everybody

:16:10. > :16:16.appreciates what the players are doing. On the turn, at the coroner,

:16:17. > :16:20.in the net! It's been a strong season for us in

:16:21. > :16:24.the Championship, and as evidence, our three teams make up over half of

:16:25. > :16:27.the PFA's Team of the Year announced last night. Well done to Kaspar

:16:28. > :16:30.Schmeichel, Wes Morgan, Danny Drinkwater, Craig Bryson, Will

:16:31. > :16:32.Hughes and Andy Reid. And some other news, Leicester City veteran Kevin

:16:33. > :16:37.Phillips has announced his retirement. Quite a finish to a

:16:38. > :16:41.career for the former England man. Not so long ago Notts County looked

:16:42. > :16:45.down and out in League One. But now with just one game to go they've got

:16:46. > :16:49.more than a fighting chance of staying up. A win over Swindon saw

:16:50. > :16:50.them go two points clear of the relegation zone. Kirsty Edwards was

:16:51. > :17:09.there to see the drama unfold. Lose this, we are gone. Three

:17:10. > :17:13.points, it is a must. These players do not need to be told what is at

:17:14. > :17:20.stake. They know the next 90 minutes are going to be huge. A lot of love

:17:21. > :17:26.for manager, he was looking for heroes in his side, and they did not

:17:27. > :17:33.let him down. Nine minutes in and a great goal from the captain. They

:17:34. > :17:40.did not have things their own way all the time. Swindon had their

:17:41. > :17:44.chances. Nervy times. Those nerves were not helped when chances came

:17:45. > :17:48.and went for Notts County. As full`time approached, there was real

:17:49. > :17:54.drama, and off the ball incident leading to pushing and shoving.

:17:55. > :17:58.Amongst it all, two Swindon players were sent off. As the end were in

:17:59. > :18:01.sight, Swindon went through broker. The goalkeeper went up for a free

:18:02. > :18:10.kick, playing right into Notts County's hands. Very surreal because

:18:11. > :18:20.we in holding on for so long. `` we had been holding on for so long. And

:18:21. > :18:26.it went in, you could see the funds coming on and everything. It was

:18:27. > :18:33.really good. Huge celebrations for a huge result. Notts County may just

:18:34. > :18:39.be on their way to the great escape. Really proud of them. Nothing is

:18:40. > :18:44.achieved yet. I have seen too many last day dramas to feel everything

:18:45. > :18:50.is done and dusted by now. It definitely is not. It will go to the

:18:51. > :18:54.very last day. If we do stay up, it will mean, probably, more or less

:18:55. > :19:04.everything to them. If we achieve what is possible, that is good

:19:05. > :19:14.enough. I love seeing that much passion on the touchline. One bit of

:19:15. > :19:20.bad news for Notts. A pretty key part of them Notts County's back for

:19:21. > :19:24.a Mac. And a mention for the Magpies' new

:19:25. > :19:27.women's side. They're through to the semi`finals of the FA Cup after a

:19:28. > :19:30.2`0 win over Portsmouth. As for Mansfield Town, boss Paul Cox

:19:31. > :19:33.was unimpressed with his players as they crumbled to bottom club

:19:34. > :19:36.Torquay. The visitors may have won but still suffered the pain of

:19:37. > :19:40.relegation. Cox's players were reduced to ten men and got a goal

:19:41. > :19:44.but still suffered the pain of a right royal rollicking from the

:19:45. > :19:46.manager. In basketball, the Leicester Riders'

:19:47. > :19:50.women's team were crowned champions while the the men went through to

:19:51. > :19:54.the play`off semi`finals but in distressing circumstances. Cheshire

:19:55. > :19:59.player Victor Moses suffered a really nasty broken ankle with seven

:20:00. > :20:04.minutes left of the quarter final. With Leicester comfortably ahead,

:20:05. > :20:07.they ended the game there and then. In motor racing, well done to

:20:08. > :20:11.Derbyshire`based Alex Lowes. He was second in the World Superbikes Race

:20:12. > :20:14.Two in Assen. The first time on the world podium. Sylvain Guintoli

:20:15. > :20:23.remains second in the Championship overall.

:20:24. > :20:30.And finally, the cricket. In Division One, it was wicked scholar

:20:31. > :20:36.at Trent Bridge. Leicester got to 500 with a remarkable century. And

:20:37. > :20:40.Derbyshire held together, just about, in their match at

:20:41. > :20:45.Worcestershire. Still two games to go.

:20:46. > :20:49.Thanks, Colin. Now, you may not have heard of Chris

:20:50. > :20:52.Young, but his work is having a massive influence on the fortunes of

:20:53. > :20:54.one of our biggest companies, and the lives of thousands of people

:20:55. > :20:58.across the country. Chris is the man who developed the

:20:59. > :21:05.most efficient passenger engine in the world, the Trent XWB, made by

:21:06. > :21:10.Rolls`Royce in Derby. This engine will earn Britain

:21:11. > :21:13.billions of pounds in the future. It's also brought international fame

:21:14. > :21:20.to Mr Young, as James Roberson reports.

:21:21. > :21:29.Running up for its first test flight last year, this air bus powered by

:21:30. > :21:33.Trent XWB engines. It was a proud moment for Chris Young, the

:21:34. > :21:42.fulfilment of a lifetime of connections. My uncle worked at

:21:43. > :21:46.Rolls`Royce and other engines, and that got me into thinking about

:21:47. > :21:52.engineering and wanting to work for Rolls`Royce for quite an early age.

:21:53. > :21:59.In 1997, Chris joined Rolls`Royce and roars meteoric Lee. He was

:22:00. > :22:06.handed the project of the Trent XWB engine. This is what he told us

:22:07. > :22:11.about it two years ago. It is sustaining around 2000 jobs within

:22:12. > :22:16.Rolls`Royce. We have a 20 billion order booked for this engine. There

:22:17. > :22:23.are 42 customers worldwide for this enormous machine. This is the

:22:24. > :22:26.biggest fan we have done. You can fit a Concorde view is allowed

:22:27. > :22:33.through the centre of the casing on this. At maximum power on take`off,

:22:34. > :22:40.it is pulling in 1.3 tonnes of air every second. The blades are turning

:22:41. > :22:45.at 1200 miles an hour, and they are pulling in air at 550 mph, throwing

:22:46. > :22:52.it out the back at nearly 1000. Chris has one an award for the Trent

:22:53. > :22:58.XWB, the fastest selling large civil engine ever. It feels like my baby,

:22:59. > :23:03.but it feels like the baby of many people in the business. It is a team

:23:04. > :23:08.sport, doing an engine like this. Many thousands have worked on it.

:23:09. > :23:14.But it is the engine's financial impact that is equally impressive.

:23:15. > :23:18.What we do is convert raw materials into something like this, which is

:23:19. > :23:23.infinitely more valuable and creates real genuine wealth for the country.

:23:24. > :23:28.That is impressive, isn't it? Superb.

:23:29. > :23:32.Let's hope the weather will be fantastic.

:23:33. > :23:36.It has been pretty decent over the past couple of days. Warm sunshine

:23:37. > :23:42.around, and more of that to come tomorrow. We are in between weather

:23:43. > :23:47.fronts, but we are staying there for tomorrow. The winds will remain

:23:48. > :23:53.light, which means we will get mist and fog forming the night. A bit of

:23:54. > :23:57.a murky start, but once that clears more sunshine to be had tomorrow

:23:58. > :24:03.afternoon. The sunshine has been hazy today, but it has been pleasant

:24:04. > :24:08.enough. We could see these showers in the southern parts, but they will

:24:09. > :24:12.not last too long and will be fading away later on tonight. It is dry

:24:13. > :24:20.tonight, the cloud will be rolling back in, and we will see mist and

:24:21. > :24:26.fog forming. We're looking at temperatures down to seven or eight

:24:27. > :24:29.Celsius, a minimum. A bit of mist and fog first thing tomorrow

:24:30. > :24:32.morning, that will clear quite quickly, the cloud will break up as

:24:33. > :24:37.well. Pleasant spells of sunshine into the afternoon. Chances of

:24:38. > :24:42.showers in the afternoon, you will be very unlucky if you catch one of

:24:43. > :24:46.those. Light winds, not feeling bad and the sunshine, temperatures up to

:24:47. > :24:52.17 Celsius. Our luck runs out on Wednesday, we are being attacked on

:24:53. > :24:56.all fronts on Wednesday. We will start off dry, sunshine through the

:24:57. > :25:00.morning perhaps, but heavy showers kicking off into the afternoon.

:25:01. > :25:06.Still warm, temperatures getting up to around 16 Celsius. Further

:25:07. > :25:10.showery rain on Thursday, but by Friday and into the bank all the

:25:11. > :25:13.weekend, pressure builds again. Settling down towards the end of the

:25:14. > :25:18.week, dry and bright weather, but gardeners take note, it is getting

:25:19. > :25:23.cold once again and the could be frosty nights once again.

:25:24. > :25:28.I put my garden table out. I was premature.

:25:29. > :25:33.We will be back with the latest news.
