:00:00. > 3:59:59at night. There is frost on the way. Thank you very much. Goodbye from
:00:00. > :00:00.me. And This is East Midlands Today with
:00:00. > :00:08.Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies. Tonight: A collapsed undercarriage
:00:09. > :00:16.brings East Midlands Airport to a halt.
:00:17. > :00:22.It left a cargo plane blocking the runway and some angry passengers
:00:23. > :00:26.stranded. We have been stood on a queue first three overs. They have
:00:27. > :00:31.not told us anything, we don't know if we're going to fly today, if we
:00:32. > :00:34.will get one tomorrow. And how frantic neighbours tried to
:00:35. > :00:40.alert a family trapped inside a blazing home.
:00:41. > :00:46.And breast`feeding mums take direct action against Sports Direct. All we
:00:47. > :00:50.want to do is to be able to feed our babies without lyrics, it is our
:00:51. > :00:54.legal rights. And a mother 's devotion to her son.
:00:55. > :01:06.Marion is named the UK's top carer. Good evening and welcome to
:01:07. > :01:09.Tuesday's East Midlands Today. 40 flights have been cancelled and
:01:10. > :01:15.6,000 passengers affected after a cargo plane became stranded on the
:01:16. > :01:18.runway at East Midlands Airport. Its landing gear snapped early this
:01:19. > :01:23.morning leaving the aircraft unable to move. No other planes have been
:01:24. > :01:27.able to land or take`off as engineers have worked to move it.
:01:28. > :01:37.Our reporter Mike O'Sullivan is at the airport for us now. Mike, what's
:01:38. > :01:42.been happening today? Good evening. It has been a day of disruption here
:01:43. > :01:45.at East Midlands Airport. Passengers made last`minute changes to their
:01:46. > :01:51.plans, there has also been released, but nobody was injured when that
:01:52. > :01:56.cargo plane incident happened. Two crew members on board, they did not
:01:57. > :02:02.have any injuries at all. Here the night, there is hope that the
:02:03. > :02:07.airport may actually reopen around 8:30pm.
:02:08. > :02:12.This dramatic image posted on Twitter shows the landing gear that
:02:13. > :02:20.parted from the stricken cargo plane. The Boeing 737 400 freighter
:02:21. > :02:24.lay stranded on the runway at East Midlands Airport after landing from
:02:25. > :02:29.Paris at around 2:30am. The orders of the plane says it is understood
:02:30. > :02:34.part of the landing gear appears to have failed on the left`hand side
:02:35. > :02:38.after it slowed down. It has meant huge disruption for passengers.
:02:39. > :02:45.Buses laid on to other airports by operators. Initially we thought we
:02:46. > :02:52.were going off earlier than this, we thought we would be away by about
:02:53. > :02:57.7am. But there has been a delay. We just have to wait and see what
:02:58. > :03:05.happens. The staff have been very informative. We have now got a bus
:03:06. > :03:15.to Manchester, we're flying out of Manchester at 150 AM. No buses
:03:16. > :03:20.through these passengers. They have got to reboot or apply for a refund
:03:21. > :03:27.online. We got a text to say it was cancelled. We have got here, we have
:03:28. > :03:30.been stood on a queue for nearly three years. They have not told us
:03:31. > :03:36.anything, we don't know if we're getting a flight today or tomorrow.
:03:37. > :03:40.Late this afternoon lifting gear was brought in to move the plane, which
:03:41. > :03:44.was carrying parcels and operated by an Irish company. Air accident
:03:45. > :03:51.investigators have started an enquiry.
:03:52. > :03:54.Let's get the very latest on the airport situation from the managing
:03:55. > :04:00.director. When will the airport reopened? Hopefully within the next
:04:01. > :04:03.couple of hours. We have made good progress over the course of the
:04:04. > :04:09.afternoon. We hope we will be able to talk the plane off the runway in
:04:10. > :04:15.the next couple of hours. You have got passengers queueing up behind
:04:16. > :04:19.you. Is that a good sign? That is a good sign, and hopefully later on
:04:20. > :04:24.this evening those patient passengers will be able to carry on
:04:25. > :04:36.with their trouble. Why has this taken so long? The incident happened
:04:37. > :04:40.this morning at 2:30am. It takes time to complete the investigation.
:04:41. > :04:47.We have to make plans in order to remove the plane from the runway.
:04:48. > :04:53.What is your advice to passengers? Keep in touch with their airlines
:04:54. > :04:59.and that would be my best piece of information. Apparently the plane
:05:00. > :05:01.was well maintained. Today they said they were sorry for the
:05:02. > :05:04.inconvenience caused to the passengers here.
:05:05. > :05:07.Let's hope things improve sharply. Thank you.
:05:08. > :05:10.A murder trial jury has heard how neighbours desperately tried to
:05:11. > :05:14.raise the alarm as fire engulfed a family's home in Leicester.
:05:15. > :05:17.The blaze, which it's alleged was a mistaken arson attack, claimed the
:05:18. > :05:25.lives of a mother and her three children. Sarah Teale has been at
:05:26. > :05:29.Nottingham Crown Court. The murder trial jury was painted a
:05:30. > :05:35.picture of the distressing scene in Leicester as fire engulfed the
:05:36. > :05:39.family home. Dozens of residents had rushed into the street, screaming
:05:40. > :05:43.and shouting, throwing stones at the windows of the terraced house to
:05:44. > :05:49.raise the alarm. A statement was read out from one of the neighbours
:05:50. > :05:55.who described the flames as being fierce. He said so much so that the
:05:56. > :05:59.front door had melted, the flames were so strong now one could get
:06:00. > :06:02.inside. He described the scene as upsetting, all of the neighbours
:06:03. > :06:09.hoping that the family would come out. But it all remained quiet. Fire
:06:10. > :06:14.dog handler Dave told the jury accelerant was discovered by the
:06:15. > :06:22.front door. It calls a flash fire of intense heat, reaching a temperature
:06:23. > :06:24.of 660 Celsius. Fire crews battled through the blaze inside, but
:06:25. > :06:28.nothing could be done to save the mother and her three children. A
:06:29. > :06:35.statement was read from her husband and father. He said his family were
:06:36. > :06:40.happy, his wife very active in the community, his daughter wanted to be
:06:41. > :06:47.a primary school teacher. 17`year`old son, he was very clever
:06:48. > :06:50.and gifted and computers. His 15`year`old son was in his final
:06:51. > :06:54.year of GCSEs and loved playing football with his friends. He said
:06:55. > :06:58.words cannot begin to express the pain I am suffering since I lost my
:06:59. > :07:04.beautiful family. I feel all alone in the world. Eight defendants,
:07:05. > :07:13.seven men and one youth, all deny murder charges. The trial continues.
:07:14. > :07:18.In other news, hundreds of students at the University of Derby are being
:07:19. > :07:27.told they could be put at risk of the HIV virus. A health care worker
:07:28. > :07:31.was suspended for reusing syringe. An investigation is now under way.
:07:32. > :07:35.NHS England has told more than 600 students that they could be infected
:07:36. > :07:43.with blood`borne viruses like hepatitis B or HIV, but that the
:07:44. > :07:46.risk is extremely low. Next tonight: A demonstration in
:07:47. > :07:49.support of breast feeding. More than 50 women marched into a city centre
:07:50. > :07:51.shop today to breast feed their babies en masse.
:07:52. > :07:55.Campaigners targeted Sports Direct in Nottingham after a customer there
:07:56. > :08:00.was told by an assistant to stop feeding her baby. Our Health
:08:01. > :08:07.Correspondent Rob Sissons reports. At Sports Direct, some direct
:08:08. > :08:10.action. Dozens of women, one reason for marching in, to stick up for
:08:11. > :08:15.their right to breast`feed when they want. We are sometimes called
:08:16. > :08:21.exhibitionists purely on the fact that we get our breasts out. You
:08:22. > :08:25.really can't see anything if you actually look. People have likened
:08:26. > :08:33.it to you and eating in public. Really? Many of the women say
:08:34. > :08:42.attitudes need to change. On page three, a woman feeding her baby. If
:08:43. > :08:46.Jordan came down, all of the latter would be there and say it was OK.
:08:47. > :08:54.The women is in their breast`feeding, it is wrong. Where
:08:55. > :08:56.is the right in that? It is essential that we feed our babies
:08:57. > :09:02.constantly and confidently wherever we are. We do not want confrontation
:09:03. > :09:09.when you have got your baby with you. I woman was told to leave the
:09:10. > :09:12.store from breast`feeding. She told BBC Radio Nottingham that she walked
:09:13. > :09:20.out into the rain embarrassed, upset and shocked. As people were going
:09:21. > :09:26.past me I thought, oh my God, what do they think? They think I am a
:09:27. > :09:30.criminal walking out of the shop. Sports Direct said it did not want
:09:31. > :09:36.to talk publicly about the case today. Shoppers had plenty to say.
:09:37. > :09:42.If it is in a corner, when it is not so public, I think. But not to be in
:09:43. > :09:47.the middle and start breast`feeding. You can cover yourself up and still
:09:48. > :09:51.breast`feed. The campaigners have had their day in the sun and the
:09:52. > :09:54.line late, how long before someone is told to stop feeding somewhere
:09:55. > :09:58.else? Sports Direct have not said anything
:09:59. > :10:03.yet, but they have written to the lady in question and sent her
:10:04. > :10:09.flowers? That's right, they have not talk to the media but they have
:10:10. > :10:12.written to the lady from their HQ. They say they regret the treatment
:10:13. > :10:17.she received, they carried out an investigation and go on to say they
:10:18. > :10:22.are reviewing their policies to make sure such incidents do not happen in
:10:23. > :10:26.the future. They have apologised. What this shows is the power of
:10:27. > :10:30.social media. It is a message to other retailers that if they do the
:10:31. > :10:34.same thing they could end up with a similar protest on their doorstep.
:10:35. > :10:42.Thank you. You are watching East Midlands Today.
:10:43. > :10:44.A care provider has been fined ?100,000 following the death of a
:10:45. > :10:47.patient after an unauthorised technique was used to restrain him.
:10:48. > :10:50.38`year`old Derek Lovegrove had severe mental health problems and
:10:51. > :10:54.suffered a heart attack in 2006. He was being cared for at Cedar Vale in
:10:55. > :10:58.East Bridgford. He died after a support worker lay on top of him.
:10:59. > :11:05.Castlebeck Care Ltd which ran the hospital has since gone into
:11:06. > :11:10.administration. I feel really happy about the guilty verdict. I have
:11:11. > :11:17.been waiting that `` waiting for that for ages. People in care need
:11:18. > :11:21.to be looked after properly, and they need the right training, and if
:11:22. > :11:26.you do not want to do that job, do not do it. There are serious
:11:27. > :11:35.failings within the management of the company. Those feelings have
:11:36. > :11:40.been going on for some time. The company ignored or did not act on
:11:41. > :11:43.advice that might have helped prevent the death.
:11:44. > :11:46.A father and his two sons have been sent to prison for their part in
:11:47. > :11:50.running a highly sophisticated counterfeiting business in
:11:51. > :11:55.Leicester. Kuldip Singh, wearing the burgundy coat, was sentenced to 23
:11:56. > :11:57.months. His brother Sarbjit Singh beside him and their father
:11:58. > :12:00.Shinderpal Singh behind were sentenced to 11 months each after
:12:01. > :12:05.pleading guilty to trade marks offences. The business had been
:12:06. > :12:07.operating from premises on Galby Street in Spinney Hills,
:12:08. > :12:20.counterfeiting more than 27 high street brands on a large`scale. From
:12:21. > :12:25.the evidence we have seized, we estimate around ?170,000 that we can
:12:26. > :12:30.improve. But we do not know the full extent of what was going on. Quite
:12:31. > :12:34.often in this case there were no accounts submitted, that is based on
:12:35. > :12:36.the documents we seized. It's been the Conservatives' turn
:12:37. > :12:39.today to kick`start their campaign in the East Midlands for the
:12:40. > :12:42.European elections. The Conservatives had two out of the
:12:43. > :12:47.region's five MEPs at the last election, but now face a strong
:12:48. > :12:56.challenge from UKIP. Here's our Political Editor John Hess.
:12:57. > :12:59.If only chasing balloons was as much fun as chasing after voters.
:13:00. > :13:05.Especially in Nottingham's Market Square. Undaunted, the Conservatives
:13:06. > :13:11.attempted to bring a touch of election razzle`dazzle. The
:13:12. > :13:18.region's only Conservative MP unveiled a new election poster. But
:13:19. > :13:20.the number to remember is five, how many MEPs the East Midlands will be
:13:21. > :13:26.sending back to Brussels and Strasbourg to represent us in the
:13:27. > :13:28.European Parliament. The East Midlands returned to Mac
:13:29. > :13:35.Conservative MEPs in the last election, and Roger Helmer hopes to
:13:36. > :13:42.do the same this time around but as a UKIP candidate. UKIP is very much
:13:43. > :13:46.overshadowing the Tory campaign. Also on the Conservatives' list of
:13:47. > :13:53.candidates, Rupert Matthews. He could have been NME P two years ago,
:13:54. > :14:00.as Roger Helmer's successor. Conservative Central office block ``
:14:01. > :14:06.blocked it, and Roger Helmer defected to UKIP. That has cast a
:14:07. > :14:10.long political shadow. UKIP have a lot of promises but they are empty
:14:11. > :14:14.promises. They have no plans of the future, your vote will be wasted
:14:15. > :14:19.with them. If you bought with the Conservative Party, change will
:14:20. > :14:22.happen. The Conservatives are feeling the squeeze. They may need
:14:23. > :14:25.more balloons to lift their vote. And there are nine parties
:14:26. > :14:28.altogether standing in the East Midlands for the European
:14:29. > :14:34.Parliamentary elections. Polling day is Thursday, May 22nd.
:14:35. > :14:38.John joins us from the newsroom now, not to talk about Europe but to talk
:14:39. > :14:46.about one of our MPs, Patrick Mercer, who's just been suspended
:14:47. > :14:53.from the House of Commons. John, what is the background to this? This
:14:54. > :14:56.is about cash for questions. Patrick Mercer agreed to ask Parliamentary
:14:57. > :15:06.questions on behalf of the government of Fiji. It was filmed by
:15:07. > :15:10.undercover reporters. It broke Parliamentary rules. The
:15:11. > :15:14.Parliamentary committee for standards met this morning and used
:15:15. > :15:18.its full powers to suspend Patrick Mercer from the House of Commons.
:15:19. > :15:25.Tonight, his parliamentary reputation is in tatters. The
:15:26. > :15:28.question is whether he will quit the Commons and force our Parliamentary
:15:29. > :15:32.by`election in Europe, the very last thing David Cameron will want. I can
:15:33. > :15:35.also tell you that Patrick Mercer is expected to make a statement at
:15:36. > :15:40.Westminster in the next half hour. Stand by for that.
:15:41. > :15:43.Thanks very much indeed. Still to come: A mother's unstinting
:15:44. > :15:47.devotion is recognised. At 85, Marion's been named the UK's
:15:48. > :16:03.top unpaid carer for looking after her son who doctors said would never
:16:04. > :16:06.survive. On the way, new England cricket selector Mick Newell. But
:16:07. > :16:08.some quick bits of sports news first, starting with Leicester
:16:09. > :16:11.striker Kevin Phillips. The veteran announced his retirement yesterday
:16:12. > :16:14.and has now confirmed he'll be joining Leicester City's coaching
:16:15. > :16:18.staff next season ` in the Premier League, of course. Notts County are
:16:19. > :16:22.hoping to complete the great escape and stay in League One. They will
:16:23. > :16:26.take a big following to Oldham for the final game in the season. Today,
:16:27. > :16:29.they sold out the initial 3,000 tickets. Another 1,000 go on sale
:16:30. > :16:31.tomorrow. And Leicester snooker star Mark Selby is back in World
:16:32. > :16:37.Championship quarterfinal action in a few minutes. He leads Alan McManus
:16:38. > :16:40.four`three. Cycling now, and we're used to seeing the likes of Victoria
:16:41. > :16:45.Pendleton winning medals on the track. But when it comes to road
:16:46. > :16:48.racing, the women have so far had to play second fiddle to the men. Next
:16:49. > :16:51.week in Leicestershire we'll see proof that's changing. The first
:16:52. > :16:53.ever women's tour of Britain is being held with Hinckley taking
:16:54. > :16:59.centre stage. Kirsty Edwards reports. The Tour de France and its
:17:00. > :17:03.equivalents have long been at the prevail of men. Maybe not for much
:17:04. > :17:08.longer. Next week's Tour of Britain will be the first ever professional
:17:09. > :17:12.women's stage race in this country. And the second stage will be
:17:13. > :17:21.starting on the roads, right here in Hinckley. Olympic champion Dani King
:17:22. > :17:25.is competing in the race. She was drumming up support for it at the
:17:26. > :17:29.Cycling road show in Hinckley today. It is going to be really exciting. I
:17:30. > :17:34.would urge people to come out and watch because it is going to be a
:17:35. > :17:37.really good event. A lot of elite women cyclists, Marianne Voss, who
:17:38. > :17:40.won the Olympic Road Race and Lizzie Armistead who won a silver medal
:17:41. > :17:44.will be there. You'll get no better field than this. Today's road show
:17:45. > :17:47.was not just about racing though, Leicestershire's own BMX star Kieran
:17:48. > :17:55.Phillips was there to show what else he can do. Cycling now is huge. I
:17:56. > :17:59.would like to show kids that there are different types of cycling and
:18:00. > :18:06.what I like best is tricks, so I could so show them some tricks! What
:18:07. > :18:09.about the girls? Would you like to see girls involved in BMX?
:18:10. > :18:13.Definitely. I mean, I think some girls might be put off by BMX, but
:18:14. > :18:16.then, if you've watched the Olympics, the BMX racing there
:18:17. > :18:19.included a big girls' group, world`class titleholders, so the
:18:20. > :18:23.girls are up there with the boys. It is great to see it and it has pushed
:18:24. > :18:28.cycling forward as a whole. It can only be a good thing. Back to the
:18:29. > :18:31.road racing quickly, and you can see Dani and a host of other leading
:18:32. > :18:44.names racing through Hinckley and other parts of Leicestershire a week
:18:45. > :18:46.on Thursday. Now, this evening's special guest. Welcome to Mick
:18:47. > :18:49.Newell, Director of Cricket at Nottinghamshire ` leading them to
:18:50. > :18:52.two county championships and a one`day trophy`candidate for the
:18:53. > :18:57.England coach's job and now an England selector. Welcome to the
:18:58. > :19:01.programme Mick. Let's get today's cricket out of the way first. Defeat
:19:02. > :19:04.in two and a half days. A "below average" pitch. A top order
:19:05. > :19:14.collapse. Not a great couple of days? I'm very disappointed. We lost
:19:15. > :19:21.our first game of the season last week. Things have to get better soon
:19:22. > :19:24.for others. You've brought in a star turn in Peter Siddle. You have some
:19:25. > :19:29.great players. What are your ambitions for Notts this season? We
:19:30. > :19:33.always say the County Championship is our number one trophy. We have
:19:34. > :19:38.had a woman of success in division one. I would like to see us go back
:19:39. > :19:42.into the top half this year. Let's move onto England. You went for the
:19:43. > :19:45.coach's job on the back of your county record. They chose Peter
:19:46. > :19:51.Moores. How do you feel now about that? Obviously, I was disappointed.
:19:52. > :19:58.If you apply for a job you want to get it. You make plans and imagine
:19:59. > :20:01.us of doing it. I think he is more than welcome to a second chance
:20:02. > :20:09.though. How much influence have you got? I will find out this week. I
:20:10. > :20:14.will attend my first meeting on Thursday. It will be an interesting
:20:15. > :20:18.experience for me and we will get an idea of the sort of team we will
:20:19. > :20:21.pick in the future. I wonder if you can influence in favour of some of
:20:22. > :20:30.the players we think have missed out. James Taylor here for example `
:20:31. > :20:34.will you promote our boys? What I have to do is be objective. It is
:20:35. > :20:42.important I go there with an open mind. Around the county scene my job
:20:43. > :20:45.is to recommend players to Peter and the other selectors and hope we come
:20:46. > :20:52.up with And what about your future ` another shot at the top job one day?
:20:53. > :20:57.The best scene. It has a limited amount of time. Thank you Mick ` but
:20:58. > :21:00.look away now as I round up today's cricket. Why macro And there is
:21:01. > :21:03.confirmation of Notts' defeat at home to Warwickshire on a lively
:21:04. > :21:06.wicket. Lots of runs at Grace Road, with Leicestershire building a
:21:07. > :21:08.healthy lead there. And Derbyshire have struggled to contain
:21:09. > :21:23.Worcestershire today. Moeen Ali doing a lot of the damage. Thank you
:21:24. > :21:28.Mick. Good luck. It's estimated that one in ten of us here in the UK help
:21:29. > :21:31.to look after a sick or dependent relative. It's often a job that goes
:21:32. > :21:34.unrecognised ` but no longer. No, because one woman from Derbyshire
:21:35. > :21:39.has just been crowned as the best unpaid carer in the country. Simon
:21:40. > :21:51.Hare has been to meet her and the son doctors said would never
:21:52. > :21:56.survive. As a mother of ten, Marion Hill has spent much of her life
:21:57. > :22:01.looking after others. But her son Andrew, who is severely disabled,
:22:02. > :22:05.has taken a lot of care. She was told he was unlikely to live past
:22:06. > :22:11.eight years old. But he has just turned 50. I have that closeness
:22:12. > :22:18.with Andrew. I always say if anything happens to me, I think that
:22:19. > :22:25.is when Andrew will go down. And now lives at Morton Grange nursing home.
:22:26. > :22:30.His mother visits almost every day. She helps look after him and others
:22:31. > :22:36.in the home. This is devotion that saw her this weekend win a national
:22:37. > :22:47.carers award. When they shouted my name I was overcome. She is an
:22:48. > :23:01.inspirational woman. It is because of this woman and her true devotion
:23:02. > :23:06.to her son that he is here today. Very humble about it. She does not
:23:07. > :23:13.want the recognition. But I think she's enjoying it now. There are a
:23:14. > :23:18.lot of carers in this country. God bless them all. Because they are
:23:19. > :23:33.good. But officially, Marion is the best. Very modest. Now it is time
:23:34. > :23:40.for the weather. This is a beautiful shot of some bluebells taken from
:23:41. > :23:46.Shipley Hall yesterday. Keep the pictures coming in.
:23:47. > :23:51.The bluebells have been coming out earlier this year thanks to the warm
:23:52. > :23:55.weather we have been enjoying. April is actually turning out to be a lot
:23:56. > :24:01.dry and warmer than average. Although May is looking as though it
:24:02. > :24:04.may start on a chilly note. Some warm sunshine around today that
:24:05. > :24:10.cloud has been increasing over the past couple of hours or so. We are
:24:11. > :24:13.staying mostly dry throughout tonight but the cloud will thicken
:24:14. > :24:18.up and lower once again and we shall see some mist and fog forming toward
:24:19. > :24:22.the end of the night. The look at the temperatures again, very mild.
:24:23. > :24:28.Nine or 10 Celsius. Tomorrow morning, another murky start, some
:24:29. > :24:31.mist and fog around first thing. Like today, that shouldn't lift and
:24:32. > :24:35.slowly and surely we will see the cloud breaking up in the afternoon.
:24:36. > :24:41.Pleasant spells of sunshine, again, there is the chance of showers in
:24:42. > :24:45.the afternoon though. But he will be looking to catch them. In the
:24:46. > :24:49.sunshine, feeling pleasantly warm, light wings will get tempered is up
:24:50. > :24:54.to 16 or 17 Celsius. Into Thursday, weather fronts, been on us. So
:24:55. > :24:59.Thursday may be a wet today. Outbreaks of rain pushing in as we
:25:00. > :25:04.head into the afternoon. Not much sunshine on Thursday either. Feeling
:25:05. > :25:09.a little cooler, 13 or 14 degrees. For the bank holiday weekend and
:25:10. > :25:12.into the weekend, pressure is starting to build and that means a
:25:13. > :25:17.lot of dry and bright weather heading our way for the bank holiday
:25:18. > :25:24.weekend. But things are getting a little colder, and gardeners take
:25:25. > :25:25.note, so night`time frosts. We are expecting some developments in the
:25:26. > :25:51.Patrick Mercer case. Goodbye. We welcome immigration,
:25:52. > :26:06.we want immigration. # Time for hope and action
:26:07. > :26:12.to set our people free
