:00:00. > :00:13.the papers on the BBC News Channel in a few minutes. Now
:00:14. > :00:18.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Anne Davies. Good
:00:19. > :00:20.evening. First tonight, East Midlands Airport remains closed
:00:21. > :00:25.tonight as investigators try to remove a stranded cargo plane from
:00:26. > :00:29.the runway. It's been shut for around 20 hours now with dozens of
:00:30. > :00:34.flights cancelled that have caused huge disruption to thousands of
:00:35. > :00:37.passengers. Our reporter Mike O'Sullivan has been at the airport
:00:38. > :00:47.all day and joins me now. Mike, when's it due to reopen? Good
:00:48. > :00:52.evening. In the last few minutes I have been told that the stranded
:00:53. > :00:56.plane is now beginning to reap `` be cleared from the runway. It is a
:00:57. > :01:00.huge operation to lift it out of the way. It is hoped the report could
:01:01. > :01:04.open in the next few hours. Disruption for passion is ``
:01:05. > :01:10.passengers continued late into the evening. Passengers for the Phantom
:01:11. > :01:15.plane that never was. They were checked into a Ryanair flight to
:01:16. > :01:19.Alicante that was supposed to be leaving around 11:20pm tonight.
:01:20. > :01:23.After going into security and getting a meal voucher, they were
:01:24. > :01:29.sent back to get on a bus to Birmingham Airport. I've been told
:01:30. > :01:37.are going to Birmingham. I bus. How do you feel? Disgusted. It is like
:01:38. > :01:44.whistling for Dixie and they don't come. We had to come through here
:01:45. > :01:49.and they said, you are going to Birmingham. Flights were cancelled
:01:50. > :01:54.affecting around 6000 passengers today. The huge cargo plane stranded
:01:55. > :01:59.on the runway, the landing gear slapped `` snapped at 2:30am after
:02:00. > :02:05.the plane landed normally delivering parcels from Paris. Throughout the
:02:06. > :02:10.day, passengers have been ferried to Manchester and Leeds airport.
:02:11. > :02:17.Originally we thought we were going off earlier than this to Leeds,
:02:18. > :02:22.about 11am this morning. Apparently there is a problem with the
:02:23. > :02:27.coaches. We will have to wait and see what happens. The staff have
:02:28. > :02:36.been very informative. There are no buses to Manchester. We are flying
:02:37. > :02:40.out of Manchester at 1:55pm. This is a very complex situation. The
:02:41. > :02:45.aircraft had incident this morning at 2:30am. That led to a full
:02:46. > :02:51.investigation. That takes time to complete. The owners of the plane
:02:52. > :02:59.have said sorry for the inconvenience. An air accident
:03:00. > :03:03.investigation is underway. The report says Ryanair had to
:03:04. > :03:07.switch that delayed flight to Birmingham because of crewing
:03:08. > :03:11.problems. Of the cargo plane says it was well maintained and had an
:03:12. > :03:16.inspection only last week. But now here's hoping that the airport will
:03:17. > :03:19.reopen in the next few hours. Thanks very much, Mike.
:03:20. > :03:21.The former Conservative MP for Newark, Patrick Mercer, has tonight
:03:22. > :03:26.resigned, prompting speculation of a snap Parliamentary by`election. It
:03:27. > :03:29.comes after he was suspended from the House of Commons for allegedly
:03:30. > :03:34.accepting money for asking questions in Parliament for a foreign client.
:03:35. > :03:40.This report from our Political Editor John Hess.
:03:41. > :03:48.Tonight, Patrick Mercer walked out on 13 years as Newark's MP. His
:03:49. > :03:52.parliamentary reputation in tatters. What's happened has happened, I am
:03:53. > :03:57.ashamed of it. Therefore I will do what I can to put it right, for the
:03:58. > :04:01.constituency of Newark. I am a Newark man. I have not lived in
:04:02. > :04:05.Newark for any political expediency. I have lived here for my family and
:04:06. > :04:10.my wife. We have been under such pressure last year. I hope that my
:04:11. > :04:17.successor, who has been well and truly chosen, will be the
:04:18. > :04:22.Conservative candidate. His downfall was this, agreeing to lobby on
:04:23. > :04:29.behalf of the government of the G. `` of Fiji. Today, the Parliamentary
:04:30. > :04:34.committee for standards used its full powers to suspend him from the
:04:35. > :04:38.Commons were six months. Tonight, at his Newark constituency, this was of
:04:39. > :04:44.the reaction. I think it is the right thing. It is a bit of a
:04:45. > :04:48.shock, really, because we have all been happy with him normally. We
:04:49. > :04:54.have all been fine with him in Newark. He left the Conservative
:04:55. > :04:56.party within weeks of the original allegations and intended to remain
:04:57. > :05:00.as an independent until the general election. Tonight he has forced a
:05:01. > :05:03.by`election that will be very unwelcome in Downing Street.
:05:04. > :05:07.And John's with me now. So how soon will there will a by`election in
:05:08. > :05:11.Newark? The by`election kicks and once the Parliamentary ripped has
:05:12. > :05:15.been moved through the House of Commons. Then there will be a
:05:16. > :05:20.further three to four weeks. The significance is this. The date will
:05:21. > :05:25.be after Thursday May 22, the date for the European and local
:05:26. > :05:30.elections. Nigel Farage, any likelihood he can stand? Today,
:05:31. > :05:36.Nigel Farage said he would be interested in standing in Newark if
:05:37. > :05:42.it was after the European elections. The Conservatives already have a
:05:43. > :05:46.Parliamentary candidate in place, he is a director with the auctioneer
:05:47. > :05:54.'s. Labour also have a candidate in place. Patrick Mercer had a
:05:55. > :05:58.Conservative majority of 16,000 at the last general election. But as we
:05:59. > :06:04.know, in a Parliamentary by`election, that majority could
:06:05. > :06:08.disappear like sand in the hand. Especially with a strong challenge
:06:09. > :06:11.from UKIP. Let's watch this space. Thank you very much.
:06:12. > :06:15.Hundreds of University of Derby students have been told they could
:06:16. > :06:18.have been put at risk of contracting the HIV virus. It's after a health
:06:19. > :06:21.worker was suspended for re`using syringe barrels for blood tests and
:06:22. > :06:24.vaccinations. An investigation's underway. NHS England has told more
:06:25. > :06:27.than six hundred students they could be infected with blood borne
:06:28. > :06:32.viruses, like Hepatitis B or HIV, but says the risk is 'extremely
:06:33. > :06:37.low'. That's how the news looks so far.
:06:38. > :06:43.Let's take a look at the weather forecast.
:06:44. > :06:46.Another warm day today. We have had close peeping in this afternoon. I
:06:47. > :06:49.am hopeful there will be more sunshine breaking through for
:06:50. > :06:54.tomorrow afternoon, although we will have to wait to get that. We will
:06:55. > :06:58.start off quite murky once again. A few sneaky showers this evening,
:06:59. > :07:06.they will fade away the night. A lot of crowd `` cloud and murk forming.
:07:07. > :07:13.Seven, eight, nine degrees temperatures. The mist will start to
:07:14. > :07:16.clear, and we will see the cloud breaking up into the afternoon. The
:07:17. > :07:24.lesson spells of sunshine later on in the day. `` pleasant spells.
:07:25. > :07:29.Temperatures getting up to around 16 or 17 degrees. There is a very small
:07:30. > :07:33.chance of a light shower. I will leave with the Outlook
:07:34. > :07:43.some sharp showers. It will be colder still on Friday.
:07:44. > :07:46.Hello again, the holiday weekend is not far-away. We are still expecting
:07:47. > :07:55.the weather to change significantly before then. Some patchy rain from
:07:56. > :07:59.northern Scotland tomorrow. There is a lot of cloud coming in from the
:08:00. > :08:05.North Sea which is pushing its way inland. There could be quite a bit
:08:06. > :08:09.of fog around in the morning. It should be a mild, misty, murky start
:08:10. > :08:10.to
