:04:06. > :04:13.Halal And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale. Good
:04:14. > :04:16.evening. The East Midlands is set for a major political battle this
:04:17. > :04:18.summer with a parliamentary by` election in the Nottinghamshire
:04:19. > :04:21.constituency of Newark. It follows the resignation of the local MP,
:04:22. > :04:25.Patrick Mercer, who's admitted taking cash for questions. It had
:04:26. > :04:29.been thought the UKIP leader Nigel Farage would stand, but he has
:04:30. > :04:32.decided not to. So, what does it all mean for the constituency? Our
:04:33. > :04:40.reporter Quentin Rayner has been finding out.
:04:41. > :04:44.Nigel Farage's opponents accuse him of throwing in the towel by not
:04:45. > :04:51.standing. But it will be tough for UKIP to win in Newark. To overturn
:04:52. > :04:56.the Tories's majority, UKIP needs a swing away from the Conservatives of
:04:57. > :05:01.25%, the highest they have ever achieved in a by`election is 19%.
:05:02. > :05:08.UKIP certainly has support here. We wanted him here. Everybody in this
:05:09. > :05:16.town I know would have voted for UKIP. I will vote for UKIP because
:05:17. > :05:21.of immigration in this town. We are overrun. His popularity is really
:05:22. > :05:25.good throughout the country. I am sort of attractive to some of the
:05:26. > :05:34.stuff he says and repelled by some of the other stuff. The overwhelming
:05:35. > :05:37.thinking of a lot of people in England are against massive
:05:38. > :05:42.immigration we have had. That is what has killed it. How much of a
:05:43. > :05:52.political Gromit will be by`election be? I think it will be important. ``
:05:53. > :05:57.political barometer. It could let Labour in via the middle. There
:05:58. > :06:03.could be pressure on David Cameron to move further to be Eurosceptic
:06:04. > :06:06.position. The market is always a busy place but the politicians will
:06:07. > :06:11.also be setting out their stall over the next few weeks.
:06:12. > :06:14.Well, that's the view in Newark. But what's the thinking in Westminster?
:06:15. > :06:27.Earlier I spoke to our political editor John Hess who told us the
:06:28. > :06:36.latest. The date of the Newark by`election is unclear this evening.
:06:37. > :06:42.Patrick Mercer had been appointed whereby a city MP can stand out and
:06:43. > :06:46.it clears the way for the parliamentary by`election. My guess
:06:47. > :06:51.it will be held towards the end of June on a Thursday, possibly before
:06:52. > :06:55.Parliament rises for the summer break. One candidate who will not be
:06:56. > :07:00.standing now is the leader of UKIP Nigel Farage. 24 hours ago, he was
:07:01. > :07:06.hinting he would be interested. But today he snubbed out the speculation
:07:07. > :07:09.by saying he did not know the East Midlands well enough to consider
:07:10. > :07:14.standing. It prompted Ken Clarke to way and by saying Nigel Farage would
:07:15. > :07:19.be committing political suicide by standing because the voters of
:07:20. > :07:28.Newark would have given Nigel Farage a bad thrashing at the polls. The
:07:29. > :07:32.irony is that tomorrow the Commons standards committee will publish its
:07:33. > :07:36.report on conclusions into the cash for questions allegations against
:07:37. > :07:39.Patrick Mercer. In other news tonight, halal meat
:07:40. > :07:42.has been taken off the menu at all of Leicester's schools after another
:07:43. > :07:47.food scare. Tests showed a halal lamb kebab contained more than 50%
:07:48. > :07:58.beef. Last year it was discovered halal lamb burgers contained pork
:07:59. > :08:02.DNA. Mike O'Sullivan reports. Dinner time at this primary School
:08:03. > :08:06.in Leicester. Now halal meat is off the menu at all schools in the city.
:08:07. > :08:13.Tests carried out by the council showed how else Lamb kebabs were
:08:14. > :08:24.found to contain more than 50% beef `` halal meat Lamb kebabs. I have
:08:25. > :08:27.lost my trust. It would be disappointing if they do not bring
:08:28. > :08:31.it back in the near future. If they can bring it back, it would be
:08:32. > :08:37.better. This is one of nine schools known to have served up the suspect
:08:38. > :08:42.kebabs. The city council has withdrawn halal meat from the menu
:08:43. > :08:46.at every city school. It is very concerning and it is equally
:08:47. > :08:50.disappointed. This is the second incident that has occurred with
:08:51. > :08:54.halal meat meals in Leicester City schools in the past year. Punjab
:08:55. > :08:59.kitchen, the company supplying the product to be schools and
:09:00. > :09:03.Leicester, is based in South Shields. They say they are entirely
:09:04. > :09:07.innocent as they did not manufacture the kebabs. They have contacted
:09:08. > :09:12.their own supplier who in turn is said to be working with trading
:09:13. > :09:16.standards officers in Yorkshire. In this case, I know there is a dispute
:09:17. > :09:20.about what should be in a kebabs, whether it should be Lamb or B. If
:09:21. > :09:27.it was labelled as Lamb and it was not, that is very serious. `` beef.
:09:28. > :09:33.The council says further investigation is needed.
:09:34. > :09:36.A telephone helpline has been inundated with calls after fears
:09:37. > :09:40.that hundreds of students may have been contaminated with infected
:09:41. > :09:43.blood. It follows the discovery that a worker at a university health
:09:44. > :09:46.clinic was re`using syringe barrels for taking blood tests and
:09:47. > :09:50.vaccinations. More than 600 students at the University of Derby may have
:09:51. > :09:55.been infected with diseases such as HIV and hepatitis.
:09:56. > :09:59.Prosecutors are considering evidence against a former Leicester MP as
:10:00. > :10:05.part of an inquiry into historic child abuse. Lord Janner hasn't been
:10:06. > :10:07.arrested, but officers from Leicestershire Police are taking
:10:08. > :10:11.advice from the Crown Prosecution Service on moving the investigation
:10:12. > :10:16.forward. Officers raided the peer's London home four months ago.
:10:17. > :10:24.Greville Janner was a Labour MP for 27 years in Leicester North West and
:10:25. > :10:27.then Leicester West. That's your news, so it's goodbye from me. But
:10:28. > :10:32.with your weather, here's Anna Church.
:10:33. > :10:40.You would have had to have been very unlucky to be caught out in the
:10:41. > :10:44.showers this evening. The Shari theme continues tomorrow. At the
:10:45. > :10:47.moment, we have clear skies around. There may be missed particularly
:10:48. > :10:57.across the Peak District. Largely dry for most of the night. `` there
:10:58. > :11:01.may be mist. It is mild. A cloudy and damp start with the light patchy
:11:02. > :11:06.rain at times in the morning. A good deal of dry weather before we start
:11:07. > :11:11.to see the showers becoming more widespread in the afternoon. There
:11:12. > :11:15.may be a few particularly intense showers towards the end of the
:11:16. > :11:21.afternoon. Bright and sunny intervals. Feeling pleasant in the
:11:22. > :11:23.sunshine. I will leave you now with your outlook for the next few days.
:11:24. > :11:27.Followed by the National forecast. as well. The outlook, it shows you
:11:28. > :11:29.it will get cooler as we had through the weekend but brighter, although
:11:30. > :11:37.gardeners beware, night-time frosts. It was a day of contrasts across the
:11:38. > :11:42.UK today, rain coming in from the West but in the south-east, like
:11:43. > :11:46.winds and sunshine, up to 20 degrees. Contrast that with six
:11:47. > :11:49.degrees in the East of Scotland. In between we've seen some
:11:50. > :11:55.thunderstorms and more general showers coming in to the western
:11:56. > :11:59.side of the UK. Northern Ireland, Wales and the south-west. The best
:12:00. > :12:02.chance of staying dry is across Lincolnshire and East Anglia. A lot
:12:03. > :12:06.of cloud around generally overnight, some patches of mist and
:12:07. > :12:08.maybe a few patches of fog as well. The lowest
