:02:02. > :02:04.Welcome to the programme. First tonight, a coroner has recorded a

:02:05. > :02:08.suicide verdict on a Leicestershire teenager whose death sparked a huge

:02:09. > :02:11.debate about online bullying. 14`year`old Hannah Smith was found

:02:12. > :02:17.hanged at her home in Lutterworth last year. Today's inquest was told

:02:18. > :02:22.there was no evidence that she'd been victimised by cyber bullies.

:02:23. > :02:33.Victoria Hicks was at the hdaring and joins us now, Victoria. Good

:02:51. > :02:51.hearing the evidence the inpuest heard today that no one else was

:03:01. > :03:01.bright and popular teenager but her father, seen arriving at thd inquest

:03:02. > :03:05.father, seen arriving at the inquest on the far right, told how his

:03:06. > :03:08.daughter had been bullied from the age of 12, by different children,

:03:09. > :03:14.mainly because of her eczem`. She mainly because of her eczema. She

:03:15. > :03:23.was found hanged in her bedroom by her sister last August. At the time

:03:24. > :03:25.her family said she had been bullied online and asked for the owners of

:03:26. > :03:32.the website involved to face the website involved to facd

:03:33. > :03:36.criminal charges. That led to a police investigation which bind

:03:37. > :03:45.messages on her account which were described as Weill and criminal

:03:46. > :03:47.harassment but during the investigation it was buying the only

:03:48. > :03:55.person who could have made them was Hannah herself. Her school did not

:03:56. > :04:02.have been aware of the bullxing or self harm which father had spoken

:04:03. > :04:04.about to the family. The cotrt heard evidence of the girl's suicidal

:04:05. > :04:08.evidence of the girl's suichdal thoughts and intentions but her

:04:09. > :04:14.school and her family could not have known what she was about to do that

:04:15. > :04:19.morning and, on hearing all the facts, the coroner recorded a

:04:20. > :04:27.verdict of suicide. The death sparked a huge debate about online

:04:28. > :04:33.bullying and calls for tighter regulation of online sites. Tonight

:04:34. > :04:40.the website issued this statement. Some young people are using social

:04:41. > :04:44.networking sites to explore issues of their emotional distress. This is

:04:45. > :04:49.the worrying trend and we are looking for appropriate measures to

:04:50. > :04:53.support young people with self harm tendencies. That is a promising

:04:54. > :04:59.pledge but sadly comes too late to help Hannah. Earlier I spoke to Jon

:05:00. > :05:07.Brown who's from the charitx, the NSPCC. I began by asking him how

:05:08. > :05:12.common are cases like this. We have been a wee of a case like this

:05:13. > :05:15.previously where someone sent bullying messages to themselves It

:05:16. > :05:18.is unique. It indicates someone bullying messages to themselves. It

:05:19. > :05:20.is unique. It indicates somdone who is unique. It indicates someone who

:05:21. > :05:24.was extremely upset, disturbed about something or a number of thhngs and

:05:25. > :05:30.effectively this was a cry for help. Is there anyway that somehow this

:05:31. > :05:34.cry for help could have been picked up? Yellow mark it is important that

:05:35. > :05:39.in a situation like this where in a situation like this where

:05:40. > :05:42.someone is sending bullying messages to themselves or in other

:05:43. > :05:47.circumstances where someone is clearly upset online that the

:05:48. > :05:53.channels of communication are open between child and parents. They need

:05:54. > :05:55.to be able to talk to their parents, or two teachers at school or someone

:05:56. > :06:02.else. To be able to have that else. To be able to have that

:06:03. > :06:03.conversation is so important. With regard to bullying online which we

:06:04. > :06:06.know is a problem, is it solething know is a problem, is it solething

:06:07. > :06:12.that is getting better or worse? We that is getting better or worse? We

:06:13. > :06:17.are seeing more strategies being developed to help address the

:06:18. > :06:21.problem. They want support and advice for young people and parents

:06:22. > :06:23.and for industry and government to take it more seriously. We need a

:06:24. > :06:29.combined approach to provide take it more seriously. We need a

:06:30. > :06:31.combined approach to provide support for children and parents with the

:06:32. > :06:32.government taking a real le`d on it. government taking a real lead on it.
