:00:14. > :00:18.With your news now for the East Midlands, I'm Maurice Flynn. A new
:00:19. > :00:22.memorial to possibly the world's most famous nurse was the focus of a
:00:23. > :00:25.special event in Derby today. Florence Nightingale, who lived much
:00:26. > :00:29.of her life in Derbyshire, will now forever be remembered on a stone
:00:30. > :00:33.plaque in the city's cathedral, as Tom Brown reports.
:00:34. > :00:40.She is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing, and this
:00:41. > :00:44.morning today's nurses gathered in Derby Cathedral to remember her
:00:45. > :00:49.local routes. Florence Nightingale grew up here and help redevelop the
:00:50. > :00:52.Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. Today's special service was dedicated to
:00:53. > :01:00.this new permanent reminder of her legacy. This is an annual event,
:01:01. > :01:05.celebrating the past, present and future of the county's care
:01:06. > :01:08.profession. It's really important we look back and celebrate the decades
:01:09. > :01:12.of nursing and bring our colleagues together. This was my grandma's
:01:13. > :01:19.badge from the war, and then there was me, and maybe poppy as well.
:01:20. > :01:23.We've had bad press in the last couple of years, and to, and
:01:24. > :01:26.demonstrate that nurses are here to care and we are proud of the
:01:27. > :01:28.profession on what we do is really important. It is hoped that the
:01:29. > :01:35.plaque means it is never forgotten. Soldiers marched through Kimberley
:01:36. > :01:38.today to mark the end of their duties in Afghanistan. Crowds lined
:01:39. > :01:40.the town's main street as around 150 soldiers paraded from the
:01:41. > :01:43.One`Seventy Engineer Group Royal Engineers. They were joined by
:01:44. > :01:46.veterans from the Royal Engineers Association and led by the
:01:47. > :01:54.Nottinghamshire Band of the Royal Engineers. As walking seems to be a
:01:55. > :01:56.theme today, fitting then that a new walking trail linking parts of
:01:57. > :02:03.Derbyshire and Leicestershire officially opens this weekend. The
:02:04. > :02:06.National Forest Way stretches for 75 miles, but there's no challenge to
:02:07. > :02:11.complete at once. Steve Orme's been checking it out. Ancient woodland,
:02:12. > :02:15.meadows and water, just some of the site you can see as you make your
:02:16. > :02:19.way through one end of the National Forest to the other. The shortest
:02:20. > :02:24.stage of the new trail is about four miles and the longest is 7.5 miles.
:02:25. > :02:29.Car parking is available at most of the stages, which are largely
:02:30. > :02:36.accessible by public transport. Now we have hundreds of woodlands and 75
:02:37. > :02:40.miles of a new trial. `` new trail. It's going to link up the very
:02:41. > :02:42.varied landscapes of the National Forest and we've designed it so
:02:43. > :02:47.anybody, even if they haven't done much walking, they can start and
:02:48. > :02:52.maybe do four miles one day and then build it up. In the course of that
:02:53. > :02:56.they will see a slice across a very beautiful part of the Midlands that
:02:57. > :03:02.maybe they had no idea about before. It's taken five years to finalise
:03:03. > :03:06.the plans as well as getting the public rights of way. No two stages
:03:07. > :03:10.are said to be the same, and the National Forest companies have
:03:11. > :03:13.already had enquiries from serious athletes and businesses which want
:03:14. > :03:15.to complete the 75 miles in a single day.
:03:16. > :03:20.To sport, and Nottingham gymnast Becky Downie has helped Great
:03:21. > :03:23.Britain win silver at the European Championships. Downie scored an
:03:24. > :03:28.impressive 14.133 on the beam and also top`scored for Britain on the
:03:29. > :03:32.bars and vault. Her scores saw Team GB scoop second behind Romania,
:03:33. > :03:35.ahead of Russia. Tickets for Derby County's play`off final at Wembley
:03:36. > :03:38.sold`out in under an hour this morning. Leicester Tigers fans
:03:39. > :03:46.though may not feel such a rush for Premiership final tickets. For the
:03:47. > :03:51.first time in ten years, Tigers won't be there, after losing last
:03:52. > :03:55.night to rivals Northampton. I don't think it's been a poor season or a
:03:56. > :03:58.disappointing one, and sometimes you have to take it on the chin,
:03:59. > :04:04.sometimes you don't get in the final and you don't win a trophy and you
:04:05. > :04:06.have to move on and go back to the training ground and start again.
:04:07. > :04:08.Glorious day today, hotter than yesterday! Let's see what's in store
:04:09. > :04:17.tonight and tomorrow now, with Kaye. What a start of the weekend, a
:04:18. > :04:21.gorgeous start, temperatures in the 20s. Fear not if you missed out
:04:22. > :04:27.today, we have more of the same tomorrow lots of lovely sunshine and
:04:28. > :04:31.the temperatures will soar into the 20s, probably 23 Celsius. A little
:04:32. > :04:35.bit of high cloud over the last hour or so and it will stay dry
:04:36. > :04:42.overnight. That will leave this a bit more cloud the clearest bells
:04:43. > :04:45.and Mondays sees lows of 12 Celsius. Tomorrow morning, beautiful start of
:04:46. > :04:49.the day with many of us having clear skies through the morning. Later in
:04:50. > :04:54.the afternoon a little more cloud creeping in that it will be a fine
:04:55. > :04:56.day and temperatures could be as high as 22 or 23.
:04:57. > :05:02.The Beat's on`air already on your local BBC Radio, and the Musical
:05:03. > :05:03.Jungle is just rounding up so join them quick! Here though, there's
:05:04. > :05:14.more from me at 6:50pm tomorrow. Good evening. Who needs an expensive
:05:15. > :05:20.holiday? Today at 24 degrees, Suffolk was warmer than Ibiza and
:05:21. > :05:24.Crete. There was lots of warm sunshine to be found across England
:05:25. > :05:25.and Wales. Of course, that hasn't been the story everywhere. Cooler
