:00:10. > :00:15.This is East Midlands Today with Dominic Heale and

:00:16. > :00:16.me, Anne Davies.

:00:17. > :00:20.11th`hour election push in Derbyshire.

:00:21. > :00:28.Ed Miliband makes an impromptu walkabout in Nottingham.

:00:29. > :00:33.Also, a man accused of starting a fatal house fire in Leicester denies

:00:34. > :00:38.even being there. Plus, how University accidentally

:00:39. > :00:44.released the details of thousands of job applicants.

:00:45. > :00:46.And battling brain cancer, Colin Bloomfield says he is determined to

:00:47. > :00:57.stay positive. There are now just 48 hours to go

:00:58. > :01:12.until the European Today, Labour leader Ed Miliband had

:01:13. > :01:15.planned to visit one of the key battleground councils

:01:16. > :01:18.of the East Midlands. But the trip to Heanor in Derbyshire

:01:19. > :01:21.had to be abandoned after his train Instead Mr Miliband performed an

:01:22. > :01:25.unscheduled walkabout in Nottingham city centre, much to the surprise

:01:26. > :01:28.of shoppers and office workers. Here's our political editor

:01:29. > :01:36.John Hess. On the hoof and off the cuff, Ed

:01:37. > :01:45.Miliband extends his hand to a young man in Nottingham on a hastily

:01:46. > :01:49.arranged walkabout. For any political leader, there is a sense

:01:50. > :01:53.of jeopardy and it does not always go to script, especially when a

:01:54. > :01:58.voter like Jason wants to speak his mind. I was made redundant. I have

:01:59. > :02:05.been on benefits due to mental health. This country used to be

:02:06. > :02:09.great and now it is not. We have had loads of interesting in Nottingham

:02:10. > :02:13.and it has all gone. In recent opinion polls, the mood music for Ed

:02:14. > :02:18.Miliband has not been easy on the ear. These elections must count for

:02:19. > :02:23.the Labour Party, especially with a year to go until the next general

:02:24. > :02:28.election. Ed Miliband has been offered the Euro agenda and has been

:02:29. > :02:33.talking about domestic issues which he thinks are the priority. We have

:02:34. > :02:38.got to deliver fair funding for councils... A more formal setting. A

:02:39. > :02:44.televised question and answer session with party supporters at the

:02:45. > :02:47.University of Nottingham. But his impromptu walkabout among shoppers

:02:48. > :02:53.had made an impression. Talking to someone in the man centre `` town

:02:54. > :02:56.centre, he is doing all of the right things, cannot make ends meet

:02:57. > :03:00.because he is on the minimum way. We have got to do something about that,

:03:01. > :03:06.make the link between hard work and building a future for your family.

:03:07. > :03:11.The Labour leader had also ventured to wear Nigel Farage less than three

:03:12. > :03:19.weeks ago was hit by an egg. No need to dock today. `` duck.

:03:20. > :03:22.The man accused of starting a fire which killed a family of four

:03:23. > :03:28.A mother and her three children died in the blaze, said to have been

:03:29. > :03:32.Tristan Richards told a murder trial jury he was

:03:33. > :03:35.at his girlfriend?s house and didn't become aware of the arson

:03:36. > :03:38.Sarah Teale was at Nottingham Crown Court.

:03:39. > :03:41.Eight defendants are on trial accused of being part of the arson

:03:42. > :03:45.attack on the house at Wood Hill in Leicester last September.

:03:46. > :03:48.Last week, one of the defendants, Kemo Porter, told the jury

:03:49. > :03:53.22`year`old Tristan Richards was the one who poured petrol over the

:03:54. > :03:59.It is alleged it was a botched revenge attack

:04:00. > :04:02.on the family home of a man they believed to be involved in

:04:03. > :04:09.Today father of one Tristan Richards took the stand in his defence and

:04:10. > :04:15.Richards said he was at his girlfriend's house

:04:16. > :04:52.Richards? barrister then asked him a series of questions.

:04:53. > :04:56.He was then asked about two convictions for drug dealing,

:04:57. > :05:01.one in 2009 and the second in 2012 when he was sentenced to 30 months

:05:02. > :05:08.in prison for possessing with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin.

:05:09. > :05:12.Under robust and at times heated cross`examination,

:05:13. > :05:19.Porter's barrister said that case showed Richards was a proven liar.

:05:20. > :05:24.He asked him, did you tell the jury you were not guilty?

:05:25. > :05:38.The barrister said, you lied then to escape

:05:39. > :05:41.responsibility, all the more reason now you are facing a murder charge.

:05:42. > :05:47.Richards and the seven other defendants all deny

:05:48. > :05:51.four charges of murdering Shehnila Taufiq and her three children.

:05:52. > :05:58.The trial at Nottingham Crown Court continues.

:05:59. > :06:04.Celebrating 25 years of cochlear implants.

:06:05. > :06:08.Little Jack is one of the latest recipients of the implant which

:06:09. > :06:22.Conservationists have begun vaccinating badgers in Derbyshire

:06:23. > :06:27.The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has raised ?50,000 to fund the project,

:06:28. > :06:38.The first vaccinations, which included badger cubs,

:06:39. > :06:41.have been carried out at one of the trust's nature reserves.

:06:42. > :06:44.Shoppers and traders in Leicester say the supply of Alphonso mangoes

:06:45. > :06:49.is starting to dry up. It follows an EU ban on the fruit.

:06:50. > :06:51.The restriction came into force after fruit flies were

:06:52. > :07:00.Business owners are meeting with the Government tomorrow to discuss

:07:01. > :07:03.a way forward after several claimed the ban will cost them thousands

:07:09. > :07:12.It's based in the University of Nottingham's Institute of

:07:13. > :07:16.It aims to bring together groups who research dementia or

:07:17. > :07:20.They hope to work directly with patients and

:07:21. > :07:25.their families to find out how they can improve their quality of life.

:07:26. > :07:28.The University of Nottingham has issued an unreserved apology

:07:29. > :07:33.after the details of thousands of job applicants were emailed

:07:34. > :07:40.The emails included information on whether people had been

:07:41. > :07:45.The university is carrying out an urgent inquiry and has notified

:07:46. > :07:50.Over the weekend, an attachment dropped

:07:51. > :07:54.into the inboxes of thousands of people who have applied for jobs at

:07:55. > :07:58.the University of Nottingham or are interested in future opportunities.

:07:59. > :08:02.It included the details of over 4,700 people who received

:08:03. > :08:06.job updates or were registered on the database of applicants.

:08:07. > :08:10.Apart from their names and gender, the attachment details what job

:08:11. > :08:14.people had applied for or could qualify for.

:08:15. > :08:16.And on the far right of the spreadsheet,

:08:17. > :08:22.two columns detailing whether applicants had been successful or

:08:23. > :08:24.been shortlisted or offered a position at the university.

:08:25. > :08:39.In a statement, the university said...

:08:40. > :08:42.The university has contacted all recipients asking them to delete

:08:43. > :08:46.the original e`mail and requesting them not to forward it.

:08:47. > :08:50.But because they included the recipients in the CC line, this has

:08:51. > :08:54.generated even more e`mail traffic for those on the database from those

:08:55. > :09:00.One applicant who did not want to be named told the BBC the data

:09:01. > :09:03.breach was worrying and they were shocked that a large organisation

:09:04. > :09:12.Two couples say their wedding plans are

:09:13. > :09:17.in ruins after a leading hotel was suddenly closed down and sold off.

:09:18. > :09:21.The administrators have described the Lace Market Hotel as one

:09:22. > :09:26.The former owners have offered another of their venues instead.

:09:27. > :09:30.But one couple we've spoken to say they've lost trust in them.

:09:31. > :09:39.Anne and Denise planned to have their wedding and reception

:09:40. > :09:42.at the Lace Market Hotel in Nottingham in November, with many of

:09:43. > :09:47.But they told me they found out the hotel closed down yesterday

:09:48. > :10:00.She said, the Lace Market has closed its doors this morning.

:10:01. > :10:08.The Lace Market Hotel, a grade II listed building, has closed down

:10:09. > :10:12.with the loss of 42 jobs and has now been sold to a private investor.

:10:13. > :10:13.In a statement, the administrator said...

:10:14. > :10:29.Another couple due to hold their wedding reception

:10:30. > :10:35.at the hotel this weekend were told of the closure by voicemail.

:10:36. > :10:38.Yesterday when we found out, we have been fighting mode,

:10:39. > :10:45.But it is obviously just causing a lot of stress

:10:46. > :10:57.and it is quite stressful organising a wedding anyway.

:10:58. > :11:04.The former owners of the Lace Market have offered their hotel in Derby

:11:05. > :11:09.We feel unsure because we do not want to go for that and then in a

:11:10. > :11:23.Anne and Denise say they have written off their ?200 deposit.

:11:24. > :11:29.Let us hope both couples can sort something out in time.

:11:30. > :11:33.Coming later: Kaye's looking to the future.

:11:34. > :11:41.I will be looking at a new forecasting system. And of course, I

:11:42. > :11:47.will have the short range forecast as well.

:11:48. > :11:50.When he was three, Michael Batt became the first person in Britain

:11:51. > :11:54.Fitted by surgeons at Nottingham's Queen?s Medical Centre,

:11:55. > :12:01.funded by The Ear Foundation, it meant he was no longer deaf.

:12:02. > :12:09.That was 25 years ago and since then thousands more children

:12:10. > :12:11.have been fitted with the implants across the country.

:12:12. > :12:14.As the foundation in Nottingham celebrates its quarter century,

:12:15. > :12:20.Jo Healey caught up with one of its latest success stories.

:12:21. > :12:31.Stand back! Jack was born profoundly deaf. At ten months, he was fitted

:12:32. > :12:37.with cochlear implants. When you take them off, I cannot hear them.

:12:38. > :12:43.What happens when you put it on again? I can hear again. There is a

:12:44. > :12:50.microphone on the sand. `` on the side. There is a magnet on his head.

:12:51. > :12:57.It sends the sensation of sound and our brain is clever enough to turn

:12:58. > :13:02.it into sound so Jack can adapt to normal speech and language. They

:13:03. > :13:10.have been supported all the way by the Ear Foundation we speak to other

:13:11. > :13:16.parents and get advice. There are few speech therapists and we get

:13:17. > :13:24.advice from them. The first`ever implants were 25 years ago. The man

:13:25. > :13:27.who had the first implants is now a high`flying businessmen and married

:13:28. > :13:34.a woman he met at the foundation. In 25 years, it has helped 10,000

:13:35. > :13:38.children and families. It helps 1500 adults with hearing loss each year

:13:39. > :13:42.and it has delivered 1000 training courses across the globe. The

:13:43. > :13:47.technology is constantly updating. The potential is up here and the

:13:48. > :13:51.reality is down here. The foundation is about bridging the gap and making

:13:52. > :13:57.sure we can reach the potential in learning to listen and to speak at

:13:58. > :14:01.home, school and work. To celebrate the anniversary, they are expanding.

:14:02. > :14:07.Golding began today on a new extension to double its size. ``

:14:08. > :14:14.building began today. They are going to build a tall building in the

:14:15. > :14:16.clouds. Talking of clouds, the foundation gave him and others like

:14:17. > :14:24.him a life that they would never have been done.

:14:25. > :14:27.I think he must be one of the best interviewees we have had!

:14:28. > :14:30.Next night, a special story. Next, Derby County fans are planning

:14:31. > :14:33.to stage a minute's applause at this weekend's Championship

:14:34. > :14:36.play`off final at Wembley. It's to show support for this man,

:14:37. > :14:39.a BBC colleague of ours here Radio Derby Breakfast presenter

:14:40. > :14:43.Colin Bloomfield says he's been overwhelmed with the messages

:14:44. > :14:45.of encouragement he's received after revealing that his cancer has

:14:46. > :15:01.now spread to his brain. At his home in Derby, Colin told me

:15:02. > :15:06.he feels as fit as a fiddle. But last June and for the second time in

:15:07. > :15:11.his life, he discovered he had skin cancer. It was advanced melanoma. He

:15:12. > :15:16.shared details of his condition with the radio Derby listeners. Today he

:15:17. > :15:23.told them to Ms have been found on his brain. `` he told them that

:15:24. > :15:27.tumours have been found. The doctors Tommy was likely to be months not

:15:28. > :15:34.years which is completely shocking. I did not expect it. Also, I have

:15:35. > :15:38.this real sense of hope and belief that there is a drug out there,

:15:39. > :15:45.there is a miracle that will save my life and preserve my life. I have so

:15:46. > :15:51.much to live for. Days after getting the news, Colin also lost his

:15:52. > :15:54.father. He knew he was going to die and he was leaving me in a position

:15:55. > :16:00.where I was being faced with this horrible disease, but also my mum

:16:01. > :16:04.faces the prospect of losing her husband and her son within the space

:16:05. > :16:09.of a few months which does not bear thinking about. But my dad died

:16:10. > :16:13.knowing that me and my mum would be strong together and we will be and

:16:14. > :16:18.I'm determined to fight this, not just for myself, but more so for her

:16:19. > :16:26.because she been an absolute rock. Somehow, we are coping. Somehow.

:16:27. > :16:32.Colin used to commentate on Derby County and on Saturday he will be at

:16:33. > :16:37.Wembley as a guest of the club. The fans are planning a minute's

:16:38. > :16:41.applause to show their support. What I would say is that if people are

:16:42. > :16:46.going to do it, brilliant, but remember other people going through

:16:47. > :16:51.this as well. Cancer does not disconnect against anybody. It is

:16:52. > :16:57.something that affects so many people and unfortunately devastates

:16:58. > :17:01.people's lives, not just the person directly affected, but other people

:17:02. > :17:05.as well. It means a lot to know people are on my side and if there

:17:06. > :17:11.is such a thing as positive energy reaping rewards, hopefully it might

:17:12. > :17:15.do me a few favours in the not too distant future. We send all the

:17:16. > :17:22.positive energy possible and all of the... `` and miracles do happen.

:17:23. > :17:27.There will be a huge wave of support on Saturday.

:17:28. > :17:30.That is an amazing gesture from the Derby fans.

:17:31. > :17:33.And tonight we'll continue our build up to the big day with

:17:34. > :17:42.You saw Colin there with the stuffed toys and things.

:17:43. > :17:44.An extra batch of tickets sold out quickly today,

:17:45. > :17:48.with fans queuing overnight to make sure they got hold of one.

:17:49. > :18:04.Kirsty Edwards now has our latest piece in the countdown to Wembley.

:18:05. > :18:08.If you needed any proof of just what Saturday means to the Derby fans,

:18:09. > :18:21.just take a look at this. They queued for hours, desperate to

:18:22. > :18:28.get their hands on the hottest ticket in town, some arrived

:18:29. > :18:31.yesterday afternoon. I think 3pm was one the first people pulled up just

:18:32. > :18:39.outside the ticket office. Got the coffee trolley out early this

:18:40. > :18:44.morning. Keeping spirits up. We really value their support. I want

:18:45. > :18:51.to be at Wembley. We have been supporting Derby since we were born.

:18:52. > :19:02.30 years. 40 years! The kids will be ecstatic. I will be the best dad in

:19:03. > :19:06.the world. At training today, the mood was relaxed to say the least.

:19:07. > :19:10.But these players do not need telling what it means to the fans.

:19:11. > :19:16.Make no mistake, they are desperate to deliver. Their coach is always

:19:17. > :19:22.stressing just how important the supporters. We have had two

:19:23. > :19:27.Australians at there who have come to support us. They said we are

:19:28. > :19:33.going to win 8`0 on Saturday. I thought, that has been a long

:19:34. > :19:40.flight! They are a bit dazed. That is huge, when people are queueing.

:19:41. > :19:45.It has ignited the city, the support. Everyone has got a spring

:19:46. > :19:50.in their step. It is creating a feel`good factor and commentating in

:19:51. > :19:54.what will be a memorable event on Saturday. Excitement is growing.

:19:55. > :20:03.Four days and counting. I very much hope you got your ticket

:20:04. > :20:07.if you wanted one! A little bit more news

:20:08. > :20:09.from the Rams. Jeff Hendrick, Conor Sammon

:20:10. > :20:13.and Richard Keogh are all in the latest Republic of Ireland squad

:20:14. > :20:19.along with Forest's Simon Cox. Speaking of Forest, new manager

:20:20. > :20:23.Stuart Pearce is bringing in Steve Wigley and Brian Eastick as

:20:24. > :20:26.coaches. Both worked with and Wigley is a former Forest player

:20:27. > :20:30.and coach. A rarely familiar face at the city

:20:31. > :20:37.ground. `` really familiar. Former England international

:20:38. > :20:39.midfielder Alan Smith has joined Notts County on a one`year deal

:20:40. > :20:41.as player`coach. He's still just 33,

:20:42. > :20:44.but has already got a career scoring goals for Leeds, Manchester United

:20:45. > :20:46.and Newcastle behind him. He arrives from MK Dons

:20:47. > :21:03.and says he was inspired by We are trying to create an

:21:04. > :21:08.environment that breeds winning mentality. Towards the end of the

:21:09. > :21:12.season, I think they really installed that into the group of

:21:13. > :21:15.players they had. I want to be one of them people that breeds that

:21:16. > :21:17.mentality as well. Cricket and Nottinghamshire's Harry

:21:18. > :21:19.Gurney has tonight doubled The national side are playing

:21:20. > :21:25.Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 He is one

:21:26. > :21:28.of only two Notts players included One County Championship match today

:21:29. > :21:43.in division two and it looks like Leicestershire

:21:44. > :21:46.will have a challenging but possibly gettable target to chase at home to

:21:47. > :21:57.Hampshire in the final day tomorrow. All our good wishes going to Colin

:21:58. > :22:00.Bloomfield. More on the Derby build up tomorrow.

:22:01. > :22:02.Kaye will be here in a moment with the weather forecast.

:22:03. > :22:06.But on the subject of weather, wouldn't it be nice to know

:22:07. > :22:12.if summer this year will look like this?

:22:13. > :22:19.Might need more than positive thought!

:22:20. > :22:23.And wouldn't it be useful to have a really advanced warning that

:22:24. > :22:27.Well, experts might just be a step closer with a new long`range

:22:28. > :22:30.forecast system that's being tried out by the Met Office.

:22:31. > :22:36.Good news if you like burnt sausages.

:22:37. > :22:42.In fact, the summer of 2009 turned out to be a monumental washout

:22:43. > :22:47.and that brought an end to long`range weather forecasts.

:22:48. > :22:49.Five years on, the Met Office are preparing to

:22:50. > :22:54.start again but just how accurate will the forecast be this time?

:22:55. > :22:57.What is new about this system is that, through

:22:58. > :23:02.increased computing power, we are able to model the atmosphere and

:23:03. > :23:08.It does not allow us to predict the daily weather many weeks in advance.

:23:09. > :23:11.What we have done is tested it over 20 past winters

:23:12. > :23:15.and we find the very exciting result that the ups and downs, cold

:23:16. > :23:21.and mild winters, are reproduced with a 62% correlation score.

:23:22. > :23:24.It is not quite 100% yet, but it could help our local

:23:25. > :23:27.authorities plan for the extreme weather conditions in advance.

:23:28. > :23:29.We would be certainly interested in more long`range forecasting

:23:30. > :23:38.We always stock our barns to the full capacity.

:23:39. > :23:42.But we would like to work with our suppliers to really give them

:23:43. > :23:45.advance warning of the severe winters so that they can produce

:23:46. > :23:52.Conflicting headlines like these popping up in the newspapers, would

:23:53. > :24:03.And get prepared, probably, if it is a flood warning.

:24:04. > :24:06.Maybe in ten years? time when they have proven themselves.

:24:07. > :24:17.How can they tell that far ahead? I don't think they can.

:24:18. > :24:19.It may take some time to rebuild trust.

:24:20. > :24:40.I saw a headline yesterday, six`week heatwave to come. In the inside, it

:24:41. > :24:43.said hopes! It sells newspapers. It is something

:24:44. > :24:49.we always want to see. Absolutely.

:24:50. > :24:57.We know the next couple of days looking tricky. The last few days

:24:58. > :25:02.have always been tricky forecasting. It is always the way when

:25:03. > :25:08.thunderstorms are in the mix. Low pressure taking charge once again. A
