:00:13. > :00:19.It And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Anne Davies. Good
:00:20. > :00:22.evening. First tonight, with just 48 hours before the European and local
:00:23. > :00:25.elections, Labour leader Ed Miliband's been in the region, but
:00:26. > :00:30.it didn't quite go according to plan. A trip to Heanor in Derbyshire
:00:31. > :00:37.had to be abandoned after his train was seriously delayed. Here's our
:00:38. > :00:41.political editor John Hess. On the hoof and off the cuff, Ed
:00:42. > :00:44.Miliband extends his hand to a young mum in Nottingham on a hastily
:00:45. > :00:50.arranged walkabout among shoppers in the city. He was on the look out for
:00:51. > :00:54.voters. For any political leader, there is a sense of jeopardy and it
:00:55. > :00:58.does not always go to script, especially when a voter like Jason
:00:59. > :01:03.wants to speak his mind. I have been made redundant. I have been on
:01:04. > :01:12.benefits since due to mental health illness. I spoke to him about this
:01:13. > :01:16.country. It used to be great, this country, and now it is not. We have
:01:17. > :01:19.had loads of industry in Nottingham and it has all gone. In recent
:01:20. > :01:23.opinion polls, the political mood music for Ed Miliband has not been
:01:24. > :01:26.particularly easy on the ear for him. These elections must count for
:01:27. > :01:30.Labour, especially with a year to go until the next general election. And
:01:31. > :01:34.with a few days to go until polling day, Ed Miliband has been off the
:01:35. > :01:36.Euro agenda and has been talking about domestic issues which he
:01:37. > :01:40.thinks are the priority in this election. At the very least, we have
:01:41. > :01:43.got to deliver fair funding for councils... A more formal setting, a
:01:44. > :01:47.televised question and answer session with party supporters at the
:01:48. > :01:51.University of Nottingham. But his impromptu walkabout among shoppers
:01:52. > :01:58.made an impression. Talking to someone in the town centre, Michael,
:01:59. > :02:02.talking about his circumstances. `` a man called William. He is doing
:02:03. > :02:06.all the right things, as so many people are. He can't make ends meet
:02:07. > :02:10.because he's on the minimum wage. We have got to do something about that
:02:11. > :02:14.and make that link again between hard work and being able to build a
:02:15. > :02:17.future for your family. The Labour leader also ventured to where UKIP's
:02:18. > :02:22.Nigel Farage less than three weeks ago was hit by an egg hurled by a
:02:23. > :02:26.protester. No need to duck today. The man accused of starting a fire
:02:27. > :02:31.which killed a family of four has denied being present at the scene of
:02:32. > :02:35.the crime. A mother and her three children died in the blaze which the
:02:36. > :02:38.prosecution at a murder trial has described as a botched revenge
:02:39. > :02:41.attack. Tristan Richards told the jury he was at his girlfriend's
:02:42. > :02:45.house and didn't know about the arson attack until the following
:02:46. > :02:49.morning. Sarah Teale was at Nottingham Crown Court.
:02:50. > :02:53.Eight defendants are on trial accused of being part of the arson
:02:54. > :02:57.attack on the house at Wood Hill in Leicester last September. Last week,
:02:58. > :03:00.one of the defendants, Kemo Porter, told the jury 22`year`old Tristan
:03:01. > :03:06.Richards was the one who poured petrol over the front door and
:03:07. > :03:10.started the blaze. It's alleged it was a botched revenge attack on the
:03:11. > :03:16.family home of a man they believed to be involved in the fatal stabbing
:03:17. > :03:20.of their friend. Today father of one Tristan Richards took the stand in
:03:21. > :03:24.his defence and denied any role in the arson attack. Richards said he
:03:25. > :03:30.was at his girlfriend's house around the corner that night. Richards'
:03:31. > :03:37.barrister then asked him a series of questions. He was then asked about
:03:38. > :03:41.two convictions for drug dealing, one in 2009 and the second in 2012
:03:42. > :04:03.when he was sentenced to 30 months in prison for possessing with intent
:04:04. > :04:08.He was then asked about two convictions for drug dealing, one in
:04:09. > :04:12.2009 and the second in 2012 when he was sentenced to 30 months in prison
:04:13. > :04:20.for possessing with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin. Under
:04:21. > :04:22.robust and at times heated cross`examination, Porter's
:04:23. > :04:34.barrister said that case showed Richards was a proven liar. He asked
:04:35. > :04:38.him, did you tell the jury you were not guilty? Yes, said Richards.
:04:39. > :04:46.Where you guilty? Yes, said Richards. Did you lie under oath?
:04:47. > :04:49.Yes, said Richards. The barrister said, you lied then to escape
:04:50. > :04:55.responsibility, all the more reason now you are facing a murder charge.
:04:56. > :04:58.No, said Richards. Richards and the seven other defendants all deny four
:04:59. > :05:09.charges of murdering Shehnila Taufiq and her three children. The trial at
:05:10. > :05:11.Nottingham Crown Court continues. BBC Radio Derby presenter Colin
:05:12. > :05:14.Bloomfield says he's been overwhelmed with messages of support
:05:15. > :05:22.after revealing that the cancer he's suffering from has now spread to his
:05:23. > :05:27.brain. Simon Hare reports. At his home in Derby, Colin told me
:05:28. > :05:31.he feels as fit as a fiddle. But last June and for the second time in
:05:32. > :05:37.his life, he discovered he had skin cancer. It was advanced melanoma. He
:05:38. > :05:41.shared details of his condition with the Radio Derby listeners. Today he
:05:42. > :05:49.told them tumours have been found on his brain. I asked the doctor, I was
:05:50. > :05:53.very blunt, I said, what does this mean for life expectancy? He said,
:05:54. > :05:56.we are likely to be talking months not years. It was just completely
:05:57. > :06:02.shocking. I didn't expect that at all. But also I have this real sense
:06:03. > :06:05.of hope and belief that there is a drug out there, there is a miracle
:06:06. > :06:13.that will save my life and preserve my life because I have so much to
:06:14. > :06:17.live for. Colin used to commentate on Derby County and on Saturday will
:06:18. > :06:23.be at Wembley as a guest of the club. The fans are planning a
:06:24. > :06:29.minute's applause to show their support.
:06:30. > :06:32.Colin, if you are watching, we wish you well. That is it from me. Now
:06:33. > :06:43.the weather. We escaped most of the showers
:06:44. > :06:49.today. We should it `` we should escape them tomorrow as well. It is
:06:50. > :06:53.staying on the one side. We still have a couple of showers to get rid
:06:54. > :06:59.of first. They will clear away in the next hour. Generally a dry
:07:00. > :07:06.night. Clear spells. A lot cooler and fresher. Tomorrow morning, it
:07:07. > :07:14.will start mostly dry. Quite a lot of cloud. Bright or sunny spells
:07:15. > :07:20.later on. Most of us staying dry. Feeling pleasantly warm in the
:07:21. > :07:24.sunshine. Light winds as well. As you can see from the outlook, it
:07:25. > :07:28.looks as if we will see thundery rain catching up with us on
:07:29. > :07:31.Wednesday and Thursday morning. More on that in the national weather
:07:32. > :07:38.heavy showers but also sunny spells. Maybe some showers for the weekend.
:07:39. > :07:44.Good evening, yet again we are finishing the day with some
:07:45. > :07:47.thunderstorms clustered across parts of Cumbria, some torrential
:07:48. > :07:53.downpours at the moment, and flashes of lightning. Along the front of
:07:54. > :07:58.this weather system, showers have developed. They are pushing their
:07:59. > :08:05.way northwards, and will continue to do so, taking the downpours into
:08:06. > :08:07.Scotland. Behind that, clearer skies
