:00:00. > :00:00.This is East Midlands Today with Quentin Rayner and me Anne Davies.

:00:07. > :00:10.He's heading up one of the biggest studies

:00:11. > :00:16.I experience hate crime in terms of religion or colour

:00:17. > :00:22.Also tonight, from Rio to Derby via Cardiff.

:00:23. > :00:26.A new way to keep a lid on World Cup drinking.

:00:27. > :00:28.Sometimes we'll see, especi`lly for important matches, it quietdns down

:00:29. > :00:32.for the game itself but there will be a big increase just after that.

:00:33. > :00:39.Find out why this Derbyshird car plant is now blooming

:00:40. > :00:43.And the copper ore from this old mine in the hdart

:00:44. > :01:01.of the Peak District that m`de the fortune of the Dukes of Devonshire.

:01:02. > :01:03.Good evening and welcome to Monday's programme.

:01:04. > :01:06.A Pentecostal bishop who saxs he was judged by the colour

:01:07. > :01:12.of his skin is backing the country's largest ever hate crime survey.

:01:13. > :01:15.There were 600 hate crimes recorded in Nottingham last year but

:01:16. > :01:20.an independent investigation claims there are actually 600 each week.

:01:21. > :01:23.Bishop Paul Thomas says that many people don't bother telling

:01:24. > :01:26.the police about racist and homophobic attacks.

:01:27. > :01:32.Bishop Paul Thomas walks the streets of St Anne's

:01:33. > :01:36.But while spreading the word about his church, he's regularly

:01:37. > :01:53.I experienced hate crime in terms of religion or colour at least once a

:01:54. > :01:56.month. I don't want my children to experience that.

:01:57. > :01:59.That's why he and colleagues at Nottingham Citizens Group are

:02:00. > :02:01.organising an independent inquiry into hate crime to find

:02:02. > :02:11.Nottingham Citizens Group s`ys hate crime is hugely under reported.

:02:12. > :02:18.Life in no place for hate is everyone's responsibility. We want

:02:19. > :02:22.to produce a set of recommendations to deliver change from the police,

:02:23. > :02:23.City Council and community themselves.

:02:24. > :02:26.Nottingham Citizens Group s`ys hate crime is hugely under reported.

:02:27. > :02:29.600 incidents were recorded by police last year but a strvey

:02:30. > :02:40.of taxi drivers suggests thdy experience that amount everx week.

:02:41. > :02:48.We get abused for nothing. Lost of us don't report it because ht takes

:02:49. > :02:50.too long, a few hours. And across the city,

:02:51. > :02:53.at the charity Mencap, bossds told me 98% of learning disability hate

:02:54. > :02:55.crimes go unrecorded. Bosses here are running thehr own

:02:56. > :02:59.campaign to change that and enable When we get the reporting r`tes up

:03:00. > :03:06.it means learning disabilitx crime and all will be taken more seriously

:03:07. > :03:12.and it will be unacceptable to name With education key,

:03:13. > :03:18.they know change won't be qtick or easy but they're determinned

:03:19. > :03:22.their inquiry, launched tonhght is the start of a robust cr`ckdown

:03:23. > :03:54.on hate crime in Nottingham. Our health correspondent has been to

:03:55. > :04:00.the Royal Derby Hospital whdre they have been planning their response to

:04:01. > :04:07.the World Cup increase in drinking. There is nothing like international

:04:08. > :04:13.football to stir up national pride. Even if England are short on goals,

:04:14. > :04:18.they will not be short of advice. And that Derby's A unit, the

:04:19. > :04:23.police, City Council and doctors have advised each other on the best

:04:24. > :04:34.approach. It is an idea frol Cardiff. It was set up in C`rdiff

:04:35. > :04:40.for looking at the data rel`ted to alcohol related injuries. D`ta will

:04:41. > :04:50.be gathered here but patient details will be anonymous. I think ht will

:04:51. > :04:54.be busy. Around seven o'clock people will start but to the game does not

:04:55. > :05:00.start till 11 so people will drink beforehand. We expect a lot of

:05:01. > :05:08.people in the city centre. We want to make sure they are safe. This may

:05:09. > :05:16.be the calm before the storl. A E was quiet today. They saw md a lot

:05:17. > :05:22.quicker than I thought todax. 9 % of patients in AMD should be sden,

:05:23. > :05:28.treated, or sent home within four hours. They have hit it herd for the

:05:29. > :05:33.first time in years. If the buyers have extended licences we whll be

:05:34. > :05:37.busy all the way through thd night. In the East Midlands, there might be

:05:38. > :05:43.more of this but emergency services said they will work hard to keep

:05:44. > :05:49.things safe. How hopeful a will work?

:05:50. > :05:55.They don't want to be killjoys at the end of the day. Most people will

:05:56. > :06:00.have a good time. They just don t want as many injuries as ustal.

:06:01. > :06:05.How long have they been working on this plan?

:06:06. > :06:10.In the case of the Ambulancd Service, months of planning and they

:06:11. > :06:19.have a very thick manual for the World Cup. We will see how ht goes.

:06:20. > :06:25.Fingers crossed it all goes well and that England do well.

:06:26. > :06:28.Plenty more on its way here on BBC East Midlands Today, including

:06:29. > :06:32.Here are Kaye and Geeta to spell it out for you.

:06:33. > :06:35.The weather has certainly been making a racket

:06:36. > :06:38.today. This footage was captured in Ilkeston earlier today. Somd heavy

:06:39. > :06:41.thunderstorms and very largd hail around as well and we are not done

:06:42. > :06:44.just yet. All the noisy det`ils coming up later.

:06:45. > :06:46.And from headlining festivals to a bestselling `lbum, we

:06:47. > :07:22.chat to the band London Gralmar who were in fact made in Nottingham

:07:23. > :07:25.At half past six this morning, firefighters were called to the

:07:26. > :07:29.Druck factory in Groby after reports of smoke inside the building.

:07:30. > :07:32.After a couple of hours, it had become a dangerous fhre.

:07:33. > :07:36.This plume of smoke transferred to a very black, acrid smoke, absolutely.

:07:37. > :07:42.Flames 30, 40 foot, jumping in the air, to be quite honest with you.

:07:43. > :07:45.I suggested to my wife, get your clothes quickly,

:07:46. > :09:09.we are going to evacuate because it was very close to a chemical plant

:09:10. > :09:11.One of the East Midland's most popular

:09:12. > :09:14.nature reserves says it may have to pay out thousands of pounds after

:09:15. > :09:19.They used an axe to attack the drawbridge outside the visitor

:09:20. > :09:22.centre at the Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottingham.

:09:23. > :09:26.CCTV pictures are now being checked as part of the investigation.

:09:27. > :09:36.Repairs to the bridge hydratlics were carried out today.

:09:37. > :09:44.As a charity the money we m`ke here and the money which is going to be

:09:45. > :09:49.spent on repairing the drawbridge should be being spent on protecting

:09:50. > :09:53.The last defendant to give dvidence in the Leicester house fire murder

:09:54. > :09:56.trial has denied knowing about any plan for revenge that night.

:09:57. > :09:58.Akeem Jeffers did however admit being there when

:09:59. > :10:01.a fire was started deliberately killing a family of four.

:10:02. > :10:03.Sarah Teale has been at Nottingham crown court.

:10:04. > :10:07.Sarah, this is the last of the eight accused to give evidence.

:10:08. > :10:12.Well, the 24`year`old says he was at Woodhill in Leicester last

:10:13. > :10:18.But he says he knew nothing about the arson attack or any other

:10:19. > :10:23.During this trial we've heard from some of the other co`accused

:10:24. > :10:28.who claim there was a plan to brick the family home of Abdul Hakim,

:10:29. > :10:32.a man believed to be involvdd in the fatal stabbing of their friend.

:10:33. > :10:35.But Jeffers said he didn't know anything about that either.

:10:36. > :10:39.He said he was on the street with the rest of the group but a van was

:10:40. > :10:43.blocking his view so he didn't see the fire being set or who dhd it.

:10:44. > :10:47.As we know, the wrong house was targeted and Shehnila Taufip

:10:48. > :10:51.and her three children died in the petrol bombing attack.

:10:52. > :10:54.Sarah, what did Jeffers say in explaining why he didn't say

:10:55. > :10:59.He says he didn't realise until the day after how serhous

:11:00. > :11:03.He said I felt sick to my stomach I couldn't believe it.

:11:04. > :11:07.I was devastated that four innocent people had died.

:11:08. > :11:12.He was asked if he was entirely innocent why he didn't tell the

:11:13. > :11:17.He said I was petrified scared and didn't want to tell the police I

:11:18. > :11:23.The court heard he was arrested two weeks after the fire at

:11:24. > :11:26.Leeds Met University where he was doing a business degree.

:11:27. > :11:29.Sarah, this case has been going on for seven weeks now.

:11:30. > :11:32.How much longer is it expected to last?

:11:33. > :11:34.This is the last of the defendants to give evidence.

:11:35. > :11:41.The legal teams will now begin their summing up and the jury is

:11:42. > :11:54.expected to be sent out to consider their verdicts next week.

:11:55. > :11:57.A large car factory is prob`bly one of the most unlikely of loc`tions

:11:58. > :12:03.But the Derbyshire`based Toxota plant has joined forces with the

:12:04. > :12:14.With more details, here's Simon Hare.

:12:15. > :12:17.It's a hive of industrial activity but look closely

:12:18. > :12:24.Toyota's giant car plant at Burnaston near Derby is now home to

:12:25. > :12:30.We've got the county flowers that represent where all

:12:31. > :12:38.The transformation of our industrial land, how domestic

:12:39. > :12:43.gardens, which are 1% of thd entire British land area, are as ilportant

:12:44. > :12:49.Because it's where most people actually engage with wild plants.

:12:50. > :12:53.The 580`acre site has got more than 400 different plant

:12:54. > :12:59.Toyota says it makes economhc as well as environmental sense.

:13:00. > :13:03.Cutting the grass between the buildings is very

:13:04. > :13:07.expensive and so this way you only cut the grass once a year,

:13:08. > :13:15.It leads the way, we believd, in showing what can be done.

:13:16. > :13:20.Roughly, for every 100 years of a hedge's life span,

:13:21. > :13:24.one new species arrives so we've got a hedge created of ten wild, woody

:13:25. > :13:30.plants and climbers that run really right up to the factories hdre.

:13:31. > :13:34.And seeds from flood meadow on this site have now gone

:13:35. > :13:38.into the nation's seed bank to help restore wild flowers to othdr areas

:13:39. > :14:12.Which, in hockey, would makd it a short corner wouldn't it Colin?

:14:13. > :14:21.We're are at Loughborough University to see if Leicester Ladies can win.

:14:22. > :14:24.We are also in Holland for the men's hockey World Cup.

:14:25. > :14:28.Now, it all seems to be happening underground at the moment bdcause,

:14:29. > :14:31.on the day work began to reopen a tungsten mine in Devon, the

:14:32. > :14:35.public now has access to a former copper mine in the Peak District.

:14:36. > :14:38.In its prime during the 19th century, the Ecton mine madd the

:14:39. > :14:45.Near Hartington in the heart of the Peak District, Paul Lortimer

:14:46. > :14:49.and Zoe Stevens take me to the old winding house above the Ecton mine.

:14:50. > :14:56.The winding house built in the 8th century is one of the buildhngs

:14:57. > :15:08.This concrete slab, underne`th is a 1300 feet hole under us. It is

:15:09. > :15:10.deeper than the Empire Statd building.

:15:11. > :15:14.The winding house built in the 8th century is one of the buildhngs

:15:15. > :15:16.revealing what developed beneath the hill 350 million years `go.

:15:17. > :15:20.The copper was discovered 4000 years ago by Bronze Age dwellers, who

:15:21. > :15:23.By the late 18th century, the mine was producing

:15:24. > :15:27.the equivalent of millions of pounds a year in income for the owner,

:15:28. > :15:31.the fourth Duke of Devonshire, and his fabled Duchess, Georgiana.

:15:32. > :15:39.It was at the time they werd landscaping Chatsworth Park, a time

:15:40. > :15:42.when the Cavendish family wdre spending a lot of money so this

:15:43. > :15:44.would have been a significant contributor to their income.

:15:45. > :15:47.As the mine went deeper, thdy needed steam power to lift the ore

:15:48. > :15:51.so a Birmingham built beam dngine was put inside the winding house.

:15:52. > :15:55.200 feet below the winding house, we walked into the mine at one of the

:15:56. > :16:12.We are directly beneath the engine house. That is about 200 fedt above

:16:13. > :16:16.our heads. Below us is another 100 feet to the bottom of the mhne.

:16:17. > :16:19.Unfortunately for the miners, once the winding engine went

:16:20. > :16:24.By the 1850s the engine was gone and copper mining stopped in 18 9.

:16:25. > :16:27.The old winding house becamd a cow shed but now the National

:16:28. > :16:33.Trust have worked to restord it to show both its functions.

:16:34. > :16:42.If you scratch on here, you can smell what it was like in the engine

:16:43. > :16:58.house, and if you scratch this one it is when we had some cows living

:16:59. > :17:08.here. It proves that all th`t glitters virtually is gold.

:17:09. > :17:14.It's a hockey special on Sport tonight because we have two big

:17:15. > :17:19.Behind me, right now, Leicester Ladies are playing the final of the

:17:20. > :17:25.And in Holland, an England men's team stackdd with

:17:26. > :17:30.East Midlands talent have a must`win game in the World Cup.

:17:31. > :17:33.So, tonight we're going to talk stick work,

:17:34. > :17:40.Some quick sports news to start though because Nottingham Forest

:17:41. > :17:46.manager Stuart Pearce is moving swiftly into the transfer m`rket.

:17:47. > :17:49.Medicals today for Dutch striker Lars Veldwijk and Former Lehcester

:17:50. > :17:54.Fryatt's scored at a rate of a goal every three games during his career,

:17:55. > :17:58.which saw him spend the last three seasons at Premier League Htll City.

:17:59. > :18:08.He's rejected a new contract offer from them.

:18:09. > :18:15.Derby County have had an offer for George Thorne rejected by Wdst

:18:16. > :18:18.Leicestershire's Sylvain Guhntoli is back up to second in the

:18:19. > :18:20.World Superbike Championships after two second place finishes

:18:21. > :18:35.In a very tight contest this season, you feel every point will count

:18:36. > :18:42.Behind me this is the Eurohockey Club Champions Trophy. Let's talk to

:18:43. > :18:49.one of the organisers. It is kind of like putting video rope powdr leak

:18:50. > :18:53.together. You must be delighted It is incredible it has all cole

:18:54. > :18:59.together and we are so pleased to have it here. You must be even more

:19:00. > :19:05.delighted to see that Leicester Ladies are winning at the moment

:19:06. > :19:12.2`1. Yes six minutes to go. It is incredible. In a joke we sahd to the

:19:13. > :19:16.team that there was only ond result we wanted and we weren't trxing to

:19:17. > :19:25.put too much pressure but to actually have them in the fhnal is

:19:26. > :19:32.relieved. In terms of the overall prestige of hockey, how important

:19:33. > :19:38.are events like this? Incredibly so. It was last in the UK ten ydars ago.

:19:39. > :19:40.We should do more here. Holland to a lot. We are so pleased to host it

:19:41. > :19:43.here at Loughborough University Still on hockey, the papers may

:19:44. > :19:47.be full of Brazil but it's not the Tonight four hockey players from

:19:48. > :19:53.the East Midlands are facing one of England's men need to beat Belgium

:19:54. > :19:59.to reach the World Cup semifinals. It's being played in The Hague

:20:00. > :20:02.in the Netherlands. And from there Mark Shardlow

:20:03. > :20:15.has sent this report. It may be dwarfed by Brazil but the

:20:16. > :20:22.tournament here is doing its best to bring noise and colour to hockey.

:20:23. > :20:29.England are playing to sell out crowds of 15,000. The East Lidlands

:20:30. > :20:34.is playing its part. A quartet who helped Beeston to the world title

:20:35. > :20:42.are hoping to bring England to success. If you had told us we could

:20:43. > :20:48.have a game against Belgium and then be in the semifinals, we wotldn t

:20:49. > :21:00.believe it. If we beat them, we get the resort `` rewards we deserve.

:21:01. > :21:09.They were thrashed 5`0 by Atstralia. We just have to go on and ilprove.

:21:10. > :21:15.We improved over the summer last year and now hopefully we whll get

:21:16. > :21:22.over the line. Belgium will be tough. We can address a few issues

:21:23. > :21:28.and improve for Monday. England have only reached the semifinal of the

:21:29. > :21:36.World Cup twice in its history. Something like this would hdlp,

:21:37. > :21:44.though. Belgian's women werd late Al for the second half yesterd`y and

:21:45. > :21:49.play started without them. It wouldn't be England in a World

:21:50. > :21:54.Cup it was not tense. Leicester are playing in black you this evening.

:21:55. > :22:03.They had three minutes and 40 seconds to go. You're the club

:22:04. > :22:08.president, how excited I? Wd have just got a penalty corner so

:22:09. > :22:16.hopefully we will convert it. How exciting is it for the team to be

:22:17. > :22:21.playing at this level? We h`ve done a fantastic job this evening. The

:22:22. > :22:28.quality is here to be seen. These are top clubs. This club from Moscow

:22:29. > :22:41.are really top. They have rdally pushed us. We have come back from

:22:42. > :22:48.1`0 down to make it 2`1. All, it has come off the post! This is cooling

:22:49. > :22:54.me. It is brilliant and we have loved every second posting this

:22:55. > :23:02.tournament. I would like to thank the council and all of our sponsors

:23:03. > :23:08.and volunteers and everybodx. Hopefully we will be able to say

:23:09. > :23:17.that Leicester Ladies have won this title later tonight. It could not be

:23:18. > :23:24.more tense. We will bring you the result of this later.

:23:25. > :23:29.We will try to pass that on before the programme ends.

:23:30. > :23:32.From a platinum`selling albtm to supporting the likes of Coldplay,

:23:33. > :23:34.London Grammar are a band that have won both ptblic

:23:35. > :23:38.But while they're named after the capital, they acttally met

:23:39. > :23:42.And as our arts reporter Geeta Pendse found out,

:23:43. > :23:45.their time here has had a huge influence on their mtsic

:23:46. > :23:57.# And I'm so down Caught in the middle. # Performing

:23:58. > :24:00.Performing Strong, a song that has had countless radio

:24:01. > :24:04.With a platinum selling albtm under their belts, it's been

:24:05. > :24:12.Over the weekend, they were performing at the

:24:13. > :24:14.No Tomorrow festival at Willerton hall just a stone's throw away

:24:15. > :24:17.from where they met as studdnts at the University of Nottingham

:24:18. > :24:20.We met, basically, because we were in the same halls.

:24:21. > :24:22.Dan and Hannah met first in about 2008.

:24:23. > :24:26.The first gig we did as a three was Bag Of Nails,

:24:27. > :24:31.We played quite a few shows there and we went on and

:24:32. > :24:39.played in the Bodega and other sort of clubs and bars around and stop it

:24:40. > :24:43.For Hannah, it was very much her first steps

:24:44. > :24:46.# Maybe I'm wasting my young years. #

:24:47. > :24:49.The trio were signed to a l`bel not long after leaving univdrsity,

:24:50. > :24:52.They've also recently won an Ivor Novello award

:24:53. > :24:56.for their songwriting but they say the seeds for many of the songs

:24:57. > :25:00.There are songs which still exist that were just written

:25:01. > :25:04.in our student bedrooms and that's an important thing because they are

:25:05. > :25:10.We began here and made our very first gigs in Notthngham.

:25:11. > :25:14.You know, that's where we wdre born, really.

:25:15. > :25:21.# Yeah, I might seem so strong Yeah, I might speak so long. #

:25:22. > :25:23.It's not long ago they were writing songs

:25:24. > :25:28.Now they're performing around the world but it's clear Nottingham

:25:29. > :25:56.She has the voice of an angdl. Yes, and the heavens opened today.

:25:57. > :26:04.This was the result of some pretty heavy rain today. We have more

:26:05. > :26:13.pictures on our Facebook page. If you have more pictures to sdnd in,

:26:14. > :26:18.keep them coming. We have h`d hot and humid air moving up frol the
