:00:14. > :00:14.And now the news for the East Midlands.

:00:15. > :00:19.First, a new crackdown on home`grown drugs.

:00:20. > :00:22.East Midlands Today can revdal that Nottinghamshire Police have set up

:00:23. > :00:26.the region's first specialist team to tackle cannabis gangs.

:00:27. > :00:30.This exclusive report from our Social Affairs

:00:31. > :00:45.Searching for illegal cannabis grows has become a full`time job. The

:00:46. > :00:49.tell`tale pungent smell led the police to this house today. They did

:00:50. > :00:53.not need to force their way in, because the tenant was out, and the

:00:54. > :00:57.door was not locked. Downst`irs they found a typical family home,

:00:58. > :01:02.littered with toys and baby photos. But in the bedroom, a very different

:01:03. > :01:07.story. As you go up the stahrs here, these now gets stronger and

:01:08. > :01:11.stronger, and as you can sed in here, this is a growing tent, with

:01:12. > :01:16.several cannabis plants inshde, already harvested, cropped `nd

:01:17. > :01:19.hanging out to dry. But finding cannabis is just the start. Police

:01:20. > :01:28.had to prove that drugs are being sold. That is where

:01:29. > :01:34.Nottinghamshire's Nou `` new cannabis recognition team comes in.

:01:35. > :01:37.The whole process is greatlx reduced in time. Police use to find a lot of

:01:38. > :01:41.cannabis being grown in large factories. These days, the drugs are

:01:42. > :01:45.becoming harder to bind as Camilla gangs become more sophistic`ted

:01:46. > :01:49.Crime gangs are now approaching people in residential areas, and

:01:50. > :01:54.they are having multiple sm`ller grows throughout the communhty is,

:01:55. > :01:59.or renting addresses themselves so if they do lose one or two of those

:02:00. > :02:03.grows, they don't lose the lajority. There are fierce disagreements about

:02:04. > :02:07.the damage cannabis causes, but for the police, it is very simple. It is

:02:08. > :02:10.illegal, and growers who get caught could end up in jail.

:02:11. > :02:13.This new team came into operation on the day another drug has been

:02:14. > :02:18.Khat acts as a stimulant and is very popular among Somalis.

:02:19. > :02:21.The ban has been welcomed bx the Somali community in Leicester.

:02:22. > :02:30.Here's our Chief News reporter Quentin Rayner.

:02:31. > :02:36.Imported from Africa, khat hs a leafy plants which, when chdwed

:02:37. > :02:40.acts like a less powerful and that you take it, you are very h`ppy It

:02:41. > :02:45.makes you happy. You are thd boss will stop can you imagine somebody

:02:46. > :02:53.who doesn't eat for three d`ys, who is chewing 24 hours? Who is talking

:02:54. > :03:00.24 hours? It is mad. I am tdlling you. I have lost five children and a

:03:01. > :03:07.beautiful wife. That is bec`use of khat. Where are you? I'm at the

:03:08. > :03:12.mosque, where I'm cheering. From today, khat is illegal. Somd

:03:13. > :03:16.information here about the ban. It is thought at least a third of

:03:17. > :03:20.Leicester's Somali communitx uses khat, including women. The community

:03:21. > :03:27.itself wanted the ban. I welcome it very much, the community welcomes

:03:28. > :03:32.the ban. It has a huge impact on our community, including familids and

:03:33. > :03:36.children. It has consequencds financially, culturally, economic

:03:37. > :03:40.way and socially. It is likd banning smoking overnight. We will offer

:03:41. > :03:45.users support, and there will be a range of reaction ranging from a

:03:46. > :03:49.ticket to find, and possiblx prosecution towards the end. Opinion

:03:50. > :03:54.is divided as to the risks of khat use. The Home Office societx oppose

:03:55. > :03:59.the ban, because it believed there was little evidence of a link

:04:00. > :04:03.between news and psychosis. Captain large doses can cause mental illness

:04:04. > :04:05.in people. The main things `re that that high doses, it can cause a

:04:06. > :04:13.psychosis. And then when people stop taking it, they can get a ddpressive

:04:14. > :04:14.illness as well. It is hoped Somalis themselves ensure the ban is

:04:15. > :04:15.effective. One of our largest hospitals is

:04:16. > :04:18.about to undergo its biggest The plan is for a new research

:04:19. > :04:23.centre and a multi`storey c`r park, complete with a rooftop helhpad

:04:24. > :04:26.for air ambulances. The changes to

:04:27. > :04:29.Nottingham's Queens Medical Centre Our health correspondent

:04:30. > :04:43.Rob Sissons reports. On top of Queen 's medical centre,

:04:44. > :04:47.and a fantastic view of what is going to change. A multistorey car

:04:48. > :04:51.park will be built here, and the idea is to fund raise millions to

:04:52. > :04:56.put a helipad for air ambul`nces on the roof of it. Sybil Joe M`ttok

:04:57. > :05:04.they reduce that transfer thme for the injury of patients arriving in

:05:05. > :05:10.the major trauma centre. Wires are not ideal at the moment, thd

:05:11. > :05:14.situation you have? At the loment, helicopters land on two sitds, the

:05:15. > :05:18.University site which they let us use, and another. Both take about 20

:05:19. > :05:21.minutes to get the patient through to the emergency department. So that

:05:22. > :05:27.delay could be costing lives at the moment due macro potentiallx, if you

:05:28. > :05:31.have unstable patients, you wonder nearer as soon as possible. Karen is

:05:32. > :05:35.one of 250 patients per year now airlifted to the major traula unit.

:05:36. > :05:41.She left control of their c`r in rain, ending up in a ditch, and

:05:42. > :05:44.knows the benefits of ambul`nces. The gentleman who was supporting the

:05:45. > :05:50.air ambulance said it would take about 20 minutes to get to hear

:05:51. > :05:54.whereas, if you are driving to Nottingham, it would probably take

:05:55. > :05:58.two and a half hours. These are the biggest redevelopment plans for the

:05:59. > :06:00.medical centre in years, and followed a ?5.5 million grant from

:06:01. > :06:06.the government. It will see more scientific research nearby. It is a

:06:07. > :06:09.really exciting development for us and for the university and for the

:06:10. > :06:13.city, and preparing a site which means that Nottingham can attract

:06:14. > :06:16.really cutting edge health `nd health technology research. So,

:06:17. > :06:21.there is going to be 100 next a hospital car park spaces, the tram

:06:22. > :06:26.is being built there, there will be a new entrance alongside it. All

:06:27. > :06:28.told, it is the start of a new dawn for the Queens medical centre.

:06:29. > :06:35.So, it's goodbye from me ` but with your weather now, here's Kaxe.

:06:36. > :06:40.Thank you very much. The we`ther is on a change, and you can fedl it

:06:41. > :06:45.already. Pressure already. @ cold front moved southwards todax,

:06:46. > :06:49.bringing cloud and if you showers this afternoon. It clears w`y to the

:06:50. > :06:54.south, but behind that, a mtch cooler and fresh air. Showers

:06:55. > :06:58.continue to push away through tonight. It is a dry night with

:06:59. > :07:03.clear spells. Cooler air st`rting to dig in. A fresher, less humhd night.

:07:04. > :07:07.Temperatures as low as seven or eight Celsius in rural spots, but we

:07:08. > :07:12.stay figures in the towns and city centres. Tomorrow morning, we start

:07:13. > :07:16.of dry, lots of sunshine through the morning. The cloud filled then again

:07:17. > :07:20.in the afternoon, cloudy skhes later. We will stay dry, sole

:07:21. > :07:25.brightness later on, although it feels a bit cooler and pressure

:07:26. > :07:29.temperature is just about gdtting up to 17 or 18 Celsius. As you can see

:07:30. > :07:30.from the outlook, it will stay quite cool and cloudy on Thursday, but the

:07:31. > :07:34.rain catches up with us on with the summary. Turning more

:07:35. > :07:40.unsettled as we head towards the weekend.

:07:41. > :07:45.Good evening. After what has been a glorious few weeks of summer

:07:46. > :07:49.sunshine for many of us, things are about to change over the next 2

:07:50. > :07:54.hours. We are seeing the change marked by the weather front on the

:07:55. > :07:58.satellite image. To the south of that, 25 degrees, in Bournemouth for

:07:59. > :08:04.instance, but in the north and east, cooler, fresher air. That sets the

:08:05. > :08:09.scene for tomorrow. A cooler day. We will have hazy sunshine on offer,

:08:10. > :08:12.although cloudier skies than we have been used it over the past week

:08:13. > :08:17.Tonight we have thicker cloud bringing more two spots of drizzly

:08:18. > :08:20.rain for some southern areas. Many parts dry, but we have the rain

:08:21. > :08:24.heading in towards the far north-west for the early hours of

:08:25. > :08:25.Wednesday. A cool night ahead. Many
