:00:00. > :00:13.Here's John Hammond. That's all

:00:14. > :00:16.This is East Midlands Today with Maurice Flynn, and me `

:00:17. > :00:19.First tonight, a hospital admits liability for a series of mhstakes

:00:20. > :00:28.that left a woman fighting for her life after routine surgery.

:00:29. > :00:41.The next thing I knew was that I ended up in a comma. I needdd a pipe

:00:42. > :00:49.in my throat. I had 52 staples. Also tonight, a commissioner's plans to

:00:50. > :00:57.close more police stations. And warnings to farmers and public to

:00:58. > :01:05.look after strong to prevent fires. The stunning painting with hts

:01:06. > :01:06.103`year`old model. One of the findings when the antiques road show

:01:07. > :01:16.came to the region. I enjoydd it. Good evening and welcome to Monday's

:01:17. > :01:19.programme. First tonight,

:01:20. > :01:21.Michele Price went in for routine Days later, she suffered multi`organ

:01:22. > :01:27.failure, horrendous complic`tions, Health chiefs have now admitted

:01:28. > :01:35.liability and apologised. Today, Michele, who is from

:01:36. > :01:37.Long Eaton, spoke to Jo Healey Three years ago,

:01:38. > :01:46.Michelle suffered with pelvhc pain. Her keyhole surgery was routine

:01:47. > :01:48.but it went horribly wrong. It destroyed me,

:01:49. > :01:53.absolutely destroyed me. I had staples, tubes,

:01:54. > :01:57.and wires coming out of me. I couldn't believe that

:01:58. > :02:04.a simple routine operation could end It started here at the

:02:05. > :02:07.Nottingham Treatment Centre. During the keyhole procedurd,

:02:08. > :02:13.they perforated her bowel. She was screaming the house down

:02:14. > :02:16.and we had to get an ambulance out She was taken to the

:02:17. > :02:23.Queen's Medical Centre. When they finally operated,

:02:24. > :02:27.after two days, She was put into it a coma

:02:28. > :02:35.in intensive care. I was talking to her

:02:36. > :02:38.and she was squeezing my hand, It was a case of not knowing whether

:02:39. > :02:47.she would pull through or not. The infection shut down her organs

:02:48. > :02:49.and there were more competitions. Nottingham University Hospital Trust

:02:50. > :02:54.has apologised and said it has done It is a case where

:02:55. > :02:59.the hospital made mistakes. Michelle's bowel was perfor`ted

:03:00. > :03:01.during what was Now, thankfully for Michelld

:03:02. > :03:06.and Stephen and the rest of the family, they have admitted liability

:03:07. > :03:10.for what they have done which means that we can now go on to agree

:03:11. > :03:13.a fair settlement for Michelle. It was a nightmare

:03:14. > :03:15.from start to finish. I don't want anyone else to go

:03:16. > :03:24.through what I went through. Controversial plans to shut

:03:25. > :03:26.several police stations havd been confirmed by Nottinghamshird's

:03:27. > :03:51.Police Commissioner. The four Nottinghamshire police

:03:52. > :03:58.stations that will soon be tp for sale. They are all shutting down to

:03:59. > :04:03.save money. They are trying to cut costs by moving the police to a new

:04:04. > :04:10.salinity hop that will be shared with local councils. Almost 300

:04:11. > :04:15.people have signed a petition against closing this building. If

:04:16. > :05:55.there is no police station there dwelt the crime rates go up?

:05:56. > :06:00.killed four innocent members of a family in a house fire.

:06:01. > :06:03.The fire was intended for the home of a man who h`s gone

:06:04. > :06:06.on trial to deny being involved in Mr Akpom's murder.

:06:07. > :06:09.Well, Mike O'Sullivan has bden in court and can tell us more.

:06:10. > :06:13.Mike, what has the jury been hearhng?

:06:14. > :06:15.Well, the jury has been hearing about the

:06:16. > :06:19.events last September that led to the fatal stabbing of Antoin Akpom

:06:20. > :06:25.and the conviction of eight men for the bungled arson attack hours

:06:26. > :06:32.later that killed four membdrs of the Taufiq family in a housd fire.

:06:33. > :06:35.On trial now is 19 year`old Abdul Hakim, whose family home was the

:06:36. > :06:39.intended target of that arson attack because of his alleged involvement

:06:40. > :06:47.Mr Hakim denies murder, and it is accepted by the prosecution that

:06:48. > :06:53.That was 19`year`old Hussein Hussein, who has already

:06:54. > :06:58.But the prosecution say that it was what is called a joint

:06:59. > :07:09.The chain of events started when Mr Akpom saw Mr Hakim and

:07:10. > :07:14.Hussein Hussein walking along Kent Street in Leicester, as he was

:07:15. > :07:21.There had been bad feeling between Mr Akpom and Mr Hakhm,

:07:22. > :07:27.and there was a verbal exch`nge between the three men.

:07:28. > :07:32.Then, Mr Akpom got back into the car and went to the gym, where

:07:33. > :07:36.he got a dumbbell, and returned to the scene with a group of around

:07:37. > :07:41.Mr Akpom was stabbed in the upper left back.

:07:42. > :07:44.There was plenty of CCTV around but the stabbing happened in a 5

:07:45. > :07:52.second break in coverage ` so that wasn't actually captured on CCTV.

:07:53. > :07:56.Joe French, who was driving Mr Akpom on the day,

:07:57. > :08:00.said under cross`examination by the defence that Mr Akpol was not

:08:01. > :08:04.being aggressive and that he was not covering things

:08:05. > :08:14.A fundraising page set up bx a Leicestershire victim of thd Ukraine

:08:15. > :08:19.plane crash has been inundated with donations following his death.

:08:20. > :08:22.Richard Mayne was on board the Malaysia Airlines.

:08:23. > :08:25.In March, he climbed to the Everest base camp to raise money

:08:26. > :08:32.He wanted to raise ?680, but donations have now reached ?5,0 0.

:08:33. > :08:36.A charity spokesperson described Richard as warm and friendlx

:08:37. > :08:40.and said they were extremelx grateful for his support.

:08:41. > :08:42.Meanwhile, in the House of Commons this

:08:43. > :08:47.afternoon, Leicester MP Liz Kendall paid tribute to the 20`year`old

:08:48. > :08:50.I am sure the Prime Minister will join me in sending

:08:51. > :08:54.his deepest condolences to the family of Richard Mayne, who lost

:08:55. > :09:00.his life in this appalling tragedy, and who live in my constitudncy

:09:01. > :09:03.Police are investigating thd sudden death of a man in Nottinghal.

:09:04. > :09:06.Officers were called to an alleyway near Lerwick Close

:09:07. > :09:15.Enquiries are underway to work out what happened, but it is not

:09:16. > :09:19.You could be jailed for lifd ` that is the blunt message to

:09:20. > :09:22.arsonists who set fire to straw and barns, and endanger farl`workers

:09:23. > :09:32.We are just coming into the season where emergency services sed an

:09:33. > :09:35.annual plague of such arson attacks on farms in the East Midlands.

:09:36. > :09:39.And tied with a spell of hot dry weather, they are asking us to

:09:40. > :09:41.keep an eye open for suspichous activity near straw bales.

:09:42. > :10:01.It is what every farmer dre`ds. Tonnes of stroll up in smokd. We

:10:02. > :10:07.have had three fires. This lan knows how it feels to lose this v`luable

:10:08. > :10:18.resource. You feel depressed. You pick a lot of effort into collecting

:10:19. > :10:24.their stroll. It is disheartening. `` collecting this straw. Experts

:10:25. > :10:33.are saying that ideally farlers should not stack straw in b`rns or

:10:34. > :10:46.near buildings. You run the risk of losing not only the straw, but also

:10:47. > :10:55.the animals and buildings. Hf fire firefighters and the public are hurt

:10:56. > :11:04.it could be a bigger problel. The penalties are severe. Farmers are

:11:05. > :11:12.being encouraged to keep thdir straw outside. If you see anyone looking

:11:13. > :11:20.suspicious please phone the police. Please phone and report anything you

:11:21. > :11:21.see. Farmers are advised to keep straw bales away from the shde of

:11:22. > :11:24.roads. Now, all this week on

:11:25. > :11:27.East Midlands Today, we will be investigating health ` showcasing

:11:28. > :11:31.some of the latest medical research The simple common aim is to

:11:32. > :11:37.improve life for patients. With leading universities, lajor

:11:38. > :11:39.teaching hospitals, and hundreds of companies dedicated to ilproving

:11:40. > :11:42.health there is a lot going on. Our health correspondent,

:11:43. > :11:55.Rob Sissons, has more. You can hear the phrase

:11:56. > :11:57.medical breakthrough around a lot. It surely applies, though,

:11:58. > :12:00.to the MRI scanner developed at the University of Nottingham

:12:01. > :12:02.in the 1970s. Used around the world, it h`s

:12:03. > :12:05.helped to save countless lives. Endless crimes have been solved

:12:06. > :12:07.thanks to DNA fingerprinting pioneered at Leicester Univdrsity,

:12:08. > :12:10.and in health it opened up new Big inspirational examples

:12:11. > :12:17.for scientists to follow. We have some of

:12:18. > :12:19.the best universities in thd country in the East Midlands, and wd have

:12:20. > :12:23.some of the top trusts in the East We also have some of the populations

:12:24. > :12:28.of people with severe health needs. It is about making the discoveries

:12:29. > :12:30.and making the discoveries latter Name any major condition

:12:31. > :12:37.and somewhere is probably working Right now at Leicester Univdrsity

:12:38. > :12:43.more than 700 medical research Back when this picture was taken,

:12:44. > :12:55.two`year`old Amanda's chancds of survival were not what they are

:12:56. > :12:58.today. But Amanda pulled through

:12:59. > :13:04.and she now has her own babx. She owes her life to research `

:13:05. > :13:07.experimental chemotherapy at We really did not know much

:13:08. > :13:12.about this particular tumour type that she had and we decided to treat

:13:13. > :13:16.children who were under fivd at diagnosis with the same chelotherapy

:13:17. > :13:20.schedule for everybody and to see It has become the standard therapy

:13:21. > :13:30.for all children with the sort Amanda is proud to have been

:13:31. > :13:34.a pioneer. It is not just me that they help

:13:35. > :13:38.that day ` they helped thousands If I look at brain tumours

:13:39. > :13:46.in children overall, when we first started

:13:47. > :13:49.in the 1990s the cure rate for brain At Queen's they are going to bring

:13:50. > :13:59.portable MRI scanning It all takes money, of course,

:14:00. > :14:04.which is one reason why Professor Walker is preparing for a 1,400

:14:05. > :14:11.mile sponsored cycle next month So, all this week we will

:14:12. > :14:15.be investigating health. Tomorrow, we will take a look

:14:16. > :14:18.at obesity and research that aims The latest stage in the demolition

:14:19. > :14:33.of five 1960s tower blocks This was the scene at the

:14:34. > :14:37.Lenton Flats, near the city centre, There are two more high`risd

:14:38. > :14:40.buildings left to demolish The site will then be used to build

:14:41. > :14:44.140 new council homes as part Drivers who had stopped at ` petrol

:14:45. > :14:49.station in Leicestershire h`d A large part

:14:50. > :14:59.of the overhead canopy fell onto two It happened after a spell

:15:00. > :15:04.of bad weather at around 5:25PM Fortunately,

:15:05. > :15:07.no one was trapped or injurdd. Giving your children independence

:15:08. > :15:10.is all part of them growing up. And the older they get, the more

:15:11. > :15:14.independent they want to be. Over the last year,

:15:15. > :15:18.50 students in Nottinghamshhre have been trained how to get to `nd

:15:19. > :15:22.from school on their own. It is part of a new county

:15:23. > :15:26.council scheme to give pupils with Emily Anderson has been to see

:15:27. > :15:42.how one of them is getting on. This boy is 17 years old. Today he

:15:43. > :15:56.is putting into practice wh`t he had been learning. I go to school and

:15:57. > :16:02.get a different bus home. Every day he goes across the road, close to

:16:03. > :16:10.the bus stop, and get on thd bus to school. He does it by himself. He

:16:11. > :16:14.has been learning how to tr`vel independently as part of a new

:16:15. > :16:20.project which helps children with special needs get to and from

:16:21. > :16:29.school. It supports them in all of life. It is making them aware of

:16:30. > :16:32.what is socially acceptable and not. This boy has done so well that he

:16:33. > :16:40.has been given an award by his school. I feel that being able to

:16:41. > :16:43.travel independently has made a big difference to his confidencd and our

:16:44. > :16:54.relationship. Without the travel training, my son is very closely

:16:55. > :16:58.attached to me. When he has come home by himself he knocks on the

:16:59. > :17:04.door and had a big smile on his face. He will finish school this

:17:05. > :17:09.week and will start a placelent in Nottingham. He will get the bus

:17:10. > :17:19.every day. He is looking forward to the independence. It feels good I

:17:20. > :17:24.do not need help any more. H can do it myself.

:17:25. > :17:27.And good on you for taking xour treasures to Derby this weekend

:17:28. > :17:30.The Antiques Roadshow was at the Roundhouse and spoilt for choice.

:17:31. > :17:32.More on that shortly, including Fiona Bruce's perfect

:17:33. > :17:55.You wonder what Derby Countx fans will talk about now,

:17:56. > :17:58.because the deal they all w`nted to see has finally been done.

:17:59. > :18:00.George Thorne was hugely influential on loan at the Rams last se`son

:18:01. > :18:02.and they have now got him permanently for

:18:03. > :18:11.Steve McClaren has praised the persistence of the club

:18:12. > :18:30.It went on and on, but eventually the Rams have got their man.

:18:31. > :18:34.Everyone who is connected whth the club is delighted that he c`n

:18:35. > :18:46.continue. She was a big plaxer for us. The team went to another level.

:18:47. > :18:56.`` he was. She can only get better. That is what we aim to do whth him.

:18:57. > :19:04.He has that determination. George Thorne will be part of a strong

:19:05. > :19:10.looking midfield for the Rals. I think everybody who is at Ddrby

:19:11. > :19:16.wants to be at Derby. We cale so close to getting promoted l`st year.

:19:17. > :19:23.We feel that we have unfinished business and we hope to get promoted

:19:24. > :19:41.this year. Despite the rain, Saturday's game was good. The Rams

:19:42. > :19:48.13`1. `` three ` one. The m`nager has been at the top of his career. I

:19:49. > :19:51.think the team will get proloted this season. It is a big test for

:19:52. > :19:56.us. A lots of positive things. Next, a young man who we thhnk could

:19:57. > :20:00.become a real star For Adam Peaty it is

:20:01. > :20:03.going to be busy time. The City

:20:04. > :20:06.of Derby swimmer is competing not only in the 50, 100, and 200 metres

:20:07. > :20:09.breaststroke, but also a relay. So, with two days to go unthl

:20:10. > :20:12.the Games, the countdown gods on. Tonight, Jeremy Nicholas has been to

:20:13. > :20:15.meet 19`year`old Peaty, What a year it has been alrdady

:20:16. > :20:25.for Adam Peaty. A new British record in the 50

:20:26. > :20:28.metres breaststroke in France. A new British record

:20:29. > :20:30.in the 100 metres in Barcelona. And, he has taken half a second

:20:31. > :20:33.off his 100 metres personal best. I looked at the score

:20:34. > :20:39.and I was like, no way! I had really good winter tr`ining

:20:40. > :20:42.and I suppose it is just coling through at the moment

:20:43. > :20:45.and it is all paying off. Hopefully, it will drop agahn by the

:20:46. > :20:48.time that I get to the Commonwealth. Adam is from Uttoxeter

:20:49. > :20:51.and he swims for the City of Derby. He is just 19

:20:52. > :20:54.and he has been coached since he was We spend a lot of our time `t

:20:55. > :21:00.Repton School, which is halfway They have got

:21:01. > :21:05.a brilliant set`up there and we have been able to create a relathonship

:21:06. > :21:08.with the school and they have been In the morning,

:21:09. > :21:11.I get up at 4AM because I lhve in Uttoxeter and I go across to Repton

:21:12. > :21:16.where I train in the morning. I train there 5AM`7AM and then I'm

:21:17. > :21:20.in the gym 7AM`8:30AM. I come back at 2PM, train until 4PM,

:21:21. > :21:27.and then the gym again 5PM`6PM, His real focus is

:21:28. > :21:37.the 100 metre breaststroke, It was a breakthrough year,

:21:38. > :21:43.last year. I was not expecting to win

:21:44. > :21:45.so fast already. I'm going to give my best for

:21:46. > :21:51.my country, Uttoxeter, and Derby. The thing with that event

:21:52. > :21:54.is that it is so close. The top four fastest men in

:21:55. > :21:57.the world are in the Commonwealth, so unlike other events,

:21:58. > :22:01.where there may be an opening or a gap from a gold medal, in that

:22:02. > :22:04.one there is going to be fotr lanes A good Commonwealth games would be

:22:05. > :22:09.maximising the opportunity that I I will tell you what he will do

:22:10. > :22:16.he will give his country his absolute best and he will not leave

:22:17. > :22:18.that pool without giving th`t. If that is good enough on the day,

:22:19. > :22:22.as long as he does that, th`t is After all

:22:23. > :22:27.the miles travelled between Derby, Repton, and Uttoxeter,

:22:28. > :22:54.now it comes down to metres ` Nottinghamshire are saying that they

:22:55. > :22:58.are taking action to make stre that it does not happen again.

:22:59. > :23:00.Nottinghamshire are waiting to see if they will be fined.

:23:01. > :23:02.On to the rest of the crickdt now, with Nottinghamshire all

:23:03. > :23:07.but qualifying for the T20 Blast quarter finals yesterday.

:23:08. > :23:10.In the County Championship, Derbyshire are in a great position

:23:11. > :23:25.Just 60 behind Glamorgan with 9 wickets left.

:23:26. > :23:33.Antiques experts are trying to trace the East Midlands arthst who

:23:34. > :23:37.carved an ornate wooden tribute to soldiers of World War I.

:23:38. > :23:40.It was one of hundreds of items brought to the

:23:41. > :23:45.BBC's Antiques Roadshow in Derby yesterday, as Navtej Johal reports.

:23:46. > :23:48.They brought their relics to the Roundhouse with the hopd

:23:49. > :23:54.Among them was 103`year`old Doreen Russell.

:23:55. > :23:56.That is her in the painting created 82 xears ago

:23:57. > :24:07.But I wouldn't want to sell the painting.

:24:08. > :24:13.But it was nice that they wdre excited that you

:24:14. > :24:19.Something with an unforgettable story.

:24:20. > :24:24.Something that was the finest of its kind.

:24:25. > :24:29.Those are probably the three magic ingredients.

:24:30. > :24:32.This was one of the finds of the day.

:24:33. > :24:35.These are portraits of soldhers from the 1916 Battle of the Somme.

:24:36. > :24:38.But it is thought to have bden made fairly recently by a Nottingham man

:24:39. > :24:45.Looking at all those images all over it, they are astonishing.

:24:46. > :24:50.You can link them all to photographs.

:24:51. > :24:53.Whoever did it used a very complex process of taking images from

:24:54. > :24:57.photographs and then carving them into a very integrated structure.

:24:58. > :25:01.It is just extraordinary that they should vanish.

:25:02. > :25:05.The programme is due to be `ired in the autumn or early next year.

:25:06. > :25:20.Navtej Johal, BBC East Midlands Today.

:25:21. > :25:23.I hope they find out who thd artist is.

:25:24. > :25:46.We have got some dry weather to come, but what a weekend. Wd have

:25:47. > :25:57.had some beautiful photographs sent to us. This is really nice. There

:25:58. > :26:04.are more on are Facebook page. It is quieter now. There is a weather

:26:05. > :26:08.front on the west and anothdr on the East. Not much is going to change

:26:09. > :26:13.for the next few days. The high for the next few days. The high

:26:14. > :26:19.pressure will stay with us. It looks good for the rest of the wedk. There

:26:20. > :26:27.is a chance of a sham on Thtrsday or Friday, but most of us will stay

:26:28. > :26:33.dry. `` a shower. For the rdst of the evening, it will stay dry. There

:26:34. > :26:41.is beautiful sunshine just now. It will stay dry overnight. Thdre may

:26:42. > :26:51.be some mist and cloud by the end of the night. Temperatures, 15`16

:26:52. > :26:55.Celsius. Tomorrow morning, there will be some low cloud but that will
