:00:14. > :00:15.First tonight, the police have confirmed that a Derby man

:00:16. > :00:17.has joined a terrorist group in Syria.

:00:18. > :00:20.Kabir Ahmed is thought to bd in a training camp run by ISIS,

:00:21. > :00:24.the organisation that's swept through large parts of Iraq.

:00:25. > :00:33.I've come across Islamic hardliner Kabir Ahmed before, in 2012.

:00:34. > :00:34.He dodged my questions after being found guilty

:00:35. > :00:38.in a landmark court case of inciting hatred of homosdxuals.

:00:39. > :00:42.He had handed out offensive leaflets outside this Derby mosque.

:00:43. > :00:45.He also put the flyers through letter boxes nearby.

:00:46. > :00:53.Now he is in Syria, at an ISIS base, calling himself Abu Sumayyah.

:00:54. > :00:56.Everybody has got their namd on the list.

:00:57. > :01:01.Everybody is forcing them to put their name and push it tp.

:01:02. > :01:04.You know, everybody wants to fight for the sake of Allah.

:01:05. > :01:08.Here, I met an imam visiting Derby to teach in Islamic classes,

:01:09. > :01:11.trying to influence young mhnds for the better.

:01:12. > :01:15.The media, instead of reallx calming things down, the media is, xou know,

:01:16. > :01:20.exploiting things and probably as well provoking those views.

:01:21. > :01:25.speaking out against violence strongly enough?

:01:26. > :01:33.Back in 2012, Kabir Ahmed s`id he was just a Muslim doing his duty.

:01:34. > :01:43.The bread maker Hovis has revealed it's to close

:01:44. > :01:46.its bakery in Leicester with the loss of 200 jobs.

:01:47. > :01:49.Workers were told today the company's site

:01:50. > :01:51.just off Troon Way will shut early next year.

:01:52. > :01:54.Support staff will be affected, as well as those who produce the bread.

:01:55. > :01:56.Union officials say they'll do all they can

:01:57. > :02:00.No`one from the company has been available for commdnt.

:02:01. > :02:02.Meanwhile, around 200 police officers could be let go

:02:03. > :02:08.in Leicestershire as the force tries to deliver on deep financial cuts.

:02:09. > :02:10.It's likely to mean a rise in civilians being used

:02:11. > :02:14.In a moment, we'll hear frol the Chief Constable,

:02:15. > :02:18.but first here's a look at the scale of the cuts.

:02:19. > :02:20.Times are changing for Leicestershire Police.

:02:21. > :02:24.After already cutting ?20 mhllion from its budget since 2010,

:02:25. > :02:30.the force now needs to save another 15.4 million by 2017.

:02:31. > :02:35.recorded crimes have fallen over the last four years.

:02:36. > :02:39.And today the force promised a renewed focus on local policing,

:02:40. > :02:45.Virtually nobody in the public will see any difference.

:02:46. > :02:47.They will still see neighbourhood policing.

:02:48. > :02:49.They will still have the same level, or indeed hhgher,

:02:50. > :02:54.For them, what really matters is that their home, their c`r,

:02:55. > :02:57.their families and their local neighbourhood is kept safe.

:02:58. > :03:01.I'm certain what the chief has planned will deliver better

:03:02. > :03:04.The force will now have to show the changes will only affect how

:03:05. > :03:08.officers do their jobs, not public safety.

:03:09. > :03:10.So, Chief Constable, how many uniformed officers

:03:11. > :03:14.Well, to make sure the books balance going forwards

:03:15. > :03:16.and that we can give local people safe,

:03:17. > :03:18.we are going to lose about 300 people

:03:19. > :03:22.There will probably be 200 or so plus of those

:03:23. > :03:27.But what that means is we c`n then deploy mixed teams

:03:28. > :03:29.of police officers, police community support officers

:03:30. > :03:32.and accredited investigativd assistants.

:03:33. > :03:34.My job is to maximise the public safety

:03:35. > :03:37.that we can get out of the budget we have got.

:03:38. > :03:39.Clearly, the budget is reducing and we'll be getting smaller as

:03:40. > :03:42.an organisation but we will still be keeping local people safd.

:03:43. > :03:45.If you say you are taking away 200 uniformed officers,

:03:46. > :03:48.how confident are you that you can keep people safe?

:03:49. > :03:52.Won't the public would be rhght in thinking their safety is in danger?

:03:53. > :03:57.We have shown in the last four or five years and Her Majesty's

:03:58. > :04:00.Inspectorate of Constabularx has reported on the fact that wd have

:04:01. > :04:03.taken ?20 million out of thd budget and in doing that,

:04:04. > :04:05.crime and anti`social behavhour has dropped

:04:06. > :04:08.and public confidence has stayed high.

:04:09. > :04:11.Of course, I would like more money but we are taking

:04:12. > :04:15.our share of austerity and that means there will be less of us.

:04:16. > :04:18.Chief Constable, can we expdct to see civilians taking statemdnts

:04:19. > :04:24.We can anticipate that investigative support assistants,

:04:25. > :04:27.who will be properly skilled and trained,

:04:28. > :04:30.will be involved in the investigation of crile.

:04:31. > :04:33.That is pretty commonplace across the country now.

:04:34. > :04:35.Certainly, we have already got some investigative assistants

:04:36. > :04:39.in place and people can be `ssured that they are very professional

:04:40. > :04:47.Simon Cole, the Chief Const`ble of Leicestershire police thdre.

:04:48. > :04:49.It's claimed house prices in the East Midlands rose on average

:04:50. > :04:53.by more than ?10,000 in the first half of this ydar.

:04:54. > :05:00.says the average value of a home in the region is now ?180,000

:05:01. > :05:05.That's an increase of almost 6% this year.

:05:06. > :05:09.As of today, BBC Radio Derbx is broadcasting in digital clarity

:05:30. > :05:31.Leciestershire's Twycross Zoo is celebrating the arrival

:05:32. > :05:35.There are only 50 of these big cats in the wild so, understandably,

:05:36. > :05:38.their birth has caused quitd a stir in the conservation world.

:05:39. > :05:41.What is more important is how few there are in the wild

:05:42. > :05:43.and what a significant contribution even having two cubs is.

:05:44. > :05:47.and vital to the future survival of this species.

:05:48. > :05:49.So that is what makes it most important.

:05:50. > :05:51.As we've seen the Commonwealth Games officially opened

:05:52. > :05:54.Duffield squash player Nick Matthew proudly led out Team England

:05:55. > :05:56.in front of 40,000 spectators in the stadium,

:05:57. > :06:01.with another billion watching on the TV!

:06:36. > :06:39.Long Eaton's Will Sharman is one of those up against him.

:06:40. > :06:42.And city of Derby's Adam Pe`ty is set to make a splash

:06:48. > :06:51.hopes to add to his medal collection.

:06:58. > :06:59.Day by day, the village is filling up,

:07:00. > :07:08.each nation making it a home from home.

:07:09. > :07:11.and getting into the spirit of things.

:07:12. > :07:13.The village is slowly slowlx, gradually now filling up.

:07:14. > :07:16.When we got here, it was a little bit sparse, now it is

:07:17. > :07:19.getting a little bit more occupied so, yeah, the atmosphere is growing.

:07:20. > :07:22.The boys have got their house together and have been playhng

:07:23. > :07:25.cards a lot and the girls h`ve been painting each other's nails.

:07:26. > :07:29.I have done red with an England flag.

:07:30. > :07:33.We were all up until 10pm, waiting for each other's nails to dry.

:07:34. > :07:35.Really amazing atmosphere and great to see everything

:08:11. > :08:13.and, more importantly, from bronze into gold.
