:00:00. > :00:48.Good evening and welcome to the programmd.

:00:49. > :00:51.First tonight, Rolls Royce has admitted exposing its workers to

:00:52. > :00:57.high levels of radiation at one of its plants in Derby.

:00:58. > :01:01.A court has heard a piece of equipment, which was supposed to

:01:02. > :01:06.be subject to strict controls, broke while it was being usdd to

:01:07. > :01:17.From Derby Crown Court, Simon Hare reports.

:01:18. > :01:25.The radiation scare happened three years ago. It happened here at

:01:26. > :01:29.Rolls`Royce Marine Power site in Derby. Please of radioactivd

:01:30. > :01:33.equipment used to measure the integrity of welding on comp

:01:34. > :01:38.opponents for nuclear powerdd submarines, simply fell off

:01:39. > :01:43.overnight tests. The radioactive source was only found later by a

:01:44. > :01:47.welder. He picked it up, not knowing what it was, passed it among his

:01:48. > :01:52.colleagues. One even wiped ht on his overalls to try and work out what it

:01:53. > :01:58.was. Several hours later solebody realised just how dangerous it could

:01:59. > :02:04.be. Rolls`Royce Marine Power, which has its main offices in Derby, today

:02:05. > :02:09.admitted seven breaches of environmental and health and safety

:02:10. > :02:13.rules. Representatives of the company were in court to he`r that

:02:14. > :02:17.the firm had used to it yourself techniques on the vital safdty

:02:18. > :02:21.equipment which ultimately failed. The court heard that the incident

:02:22. > :02:25.had been a distressing experience for everyone involved. Workdrs have

:02:26. > :02:30.been left feeling worried that they may develop cancer in later life or

:02:31. > :02:34.be unable to have children. Rolls`Royce has paid compensation to

:02:35. > :02:37.its employees that were involved, but it's still not yet known what

:02:38. > :02:44.longer`term effects the radhation could pose. The company is said to

:02:45. > :02:45.have taken steps to ensure something similar can not happen again. And it

:02:46. > :02:49.is due to be sentenced tomorrow Police in Derbyshire are to crack

:02:50. > :02:54.down on speeding bikers aftdr six The county's sweeping landscape

:02:55. > :03:01.means it's hugely attractivd to motorcyclists from many parts

:03:02. > :03:04.of the UK. Now officers will be switchdd away

:03:05. > :03:07.from road safety education and instead sent out and about

:03:08. > :03:11.on the roads with speed guns. Mike O'Sullivan can join us now

:03:12. > :03:15.from Matlock Bath. Mike, how is this crackdown being

:03:16. > :03:31.received in the centre good evening. Well, many bikers I

:03:32. > :03:35.have spoken to say that it hs a tiny minority that speed excessively

:03:36. > :03:39.along the roads of Derbyshire. The police usually have an enforcement

:03:40. > :03:44.and an education campaign hdre every summer. This summer, it is `ll about

:03:45. > :03:49.enforcing. Catching what ond officer described as the speed freaks. Out

:03:50. > :03:52.on the road with a Derbyshire police traffic officer. After a worrying

:03:53. > :03:58.rise in for talent is involving motorbikes, there is to be `

:03:59. > :04:03.crackdown enforcing the spedd limit. And targeting the bikers who seem to

:04:04. > :04:13.have a need for speed. Some people are sadly speed freaks. Thex like to

:04:14. > :04:17.ride their bikes at speed. That is the bottom line. This is whdre six

:04:18. > :04:21.people, for bikers, passengdr and a pedestrian have died and whhch

:04:22. > :04:28.are's roads in the first six months of 2014. Double the number hn the

:04:29. > :04:32.same period last year. Matlock Bath is a mecca for motorcyclists. It's

:04:33. > :04:36.where they can show off thehr machines as they ride through the

:04:37. > :04:42.county's picturesque but soletimes twisting roads. People tend to open

:04:43. > :04:53.it up more than they do in lore built`up areas. We slow down at the

:04:54. > :04:57.towns anyway. A lot of it is excess speed in the wrong place. It is not

:04:58. > :05:02.all down to speed, it is thd experience as well. Thorogood roads

:05:03. > :05:10.around here, nice sweeping turns. It is for biking. And for speeding The

:05:11. > :05:14.police will now spend less time speaking to bikers about ro`d

:05:15. > :05:20.safety, instead, they will be out enforcing the speed limit. xou could

:05:21. > :05:24.be a very good rider but yot have to be aware that everybody elsd on the

:05:25. > :05:31.the crackdown is due to last until the crackdown is due to last until

:05:32. > :05:36.the of October. I'm joined now by Andy from bike safe, promothonal

:05:37. > :05:42.body that promotes bike safdty. Is it the younger ride or the lore

:05:43. > :05:45.mature rider who is speeding? It is usually be born again guys. They got

:05:46. > :05:50.the license back in the day and now they have a bit of money thdy can

:05:51. > :05:55.afford to buy there was wanted. If you are a fair weather biker, a

:05:56. > :06:00.Sunday biker, how much more at risk are you? Practice makes perfect

:06:01. > :06:03.like anything. The more you ride your bike, the more you unddrstand

:06:04. > :06:10.it. Also, you need to upgrade your skills which is where we can help.

:06:11. > :06:16.how powerful bikes these daxs? You call them a Ferrari on two wheels.

:06:17. > :06:24.Look at this. This is a cruhser A lot of revs. You are looking at

:06:25. > :06:28.roughly one horsepower per kilogram. It's like balancing a Ferrari on two

:06:29. > :06:35.wheels. How do we get someone of your courses? , London says at

:06:36. > :06:40.police headquarters go to bhke safety .co .uk. Many bikers here

:06:41. > :06:42.taken the opportunity for a run centre night here in Matlock.

:06:43. > :06:46.Nottinghamshire's reported the country's biggest drop

:06:47. > :06:49.in the number of people killed or seriously injured on its ro`ds.

:06:50. > :06:51.The Institute of Advanced Motorists says the number

:06:52. > :06:55.of people who died or were badly hurt in the county fell frol 44

:06:56. > :07:04.The charity says it shows s`fety measures put in place

:07:05. > :07:08.by local authorities can make a big difference.

:07:09. > :07:10.From next month, patients will be able to usd stroke

:07:11. > :07:15.services at King's Mill Hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a wdek.

:07:16. > :07:20.Managers are planning to extend access to a special clot`busting

:07:21. > :07:25.At present, the service onlx operates at King's Mill for ten

:07:26. > :07:30.It means that patients needhng treatment outside these timds won't

:07:31. > :07:35.have to be transferred to Nottingham City Hospital.

:07:36. > :07:38.Plenty more to come on the programme tonight including

:07:39. > :07:43.Plus ? capturing the industrial sounds of a changing city.

:07:44. > :07:46.The pioneering project that?s recording the past.

:07:47. > :07:50.And looking to the future, the forecast suggests we cotld be

:07:51. > :08:01.recording some rainfall in the next day or so.

:08:02. > :08:13.East Midlands Today can revdal that children as young

:08:14. > :08:16.as eight are to be mentored to stop them being groomed by drugs gangs.

:08:17. > :08:20.Mentors will start working at three Nottingham primary schools

:08:21. > :08:25.As our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, reports, it's `ll

:08:26. > :08:35.Mick has been running youth projects here in Saint Anne's

:08:36. > :08:39.It's about getting teenagers off the streets

:08:40. > :08:43.But for some, that is already too late.

:08:44. > :08:45.So now he's setting up a te`m of mentors to work

:08:46. > :08:52.Gangs and drug dealers will use eight and nine`year`olds for doing

:08:53. > :08:54.little errands ` and that's their apprenticeship, they start of in

:08:55. > :08:57.that world, quite early on, doing those little jobs, and, then, if

:08:58. > :09:00.they show an aptitude for it and have something about thdm,

:09:01. > :09:04.And this is why, quite often, there is a misapprehension that

:09:05. > :09:06.gangs are full of young kids that just blindly follow.

:09:07. > :09:15.Actually, some of them are picked early because they are bright.

:09:16. > :09:18.It was last year's Royal visit to Saint Anne's that promoted

:09:19. > :09:21.Prince Harry's charity, the Royal Foundation, is setting up a

:09:22. > :09:26.The next scheme's going to target up to 30 local children, yotng

:09:27. > :09:33.children judged as a high rhsk of being groomed into criminal gangs.

:09:34. > :09:35.We run sessions in schools, so that's one`to`one mentorhng

:09:36. > :09:41.We do cricket, football, basketball and we've an allotment projdct.

:09:42. > :09:44.We find something they are good at and really push them

:09:45. > :09:47.in that direction so they h`ve something else that is theirs rather

:09:48. > :09:51.than just following everyond else down the negative path.

:09:52. > :09:55.There's been real progress in tackling drug`fuelled violence

:09:56. > :09:57.A decade ago, this area was notorious

:09:58. > :10:01.But recent cuts in youth services have prompted

:10:02. > :10:05.And that is why these new g`ng prevention projects are such

:10:06. > :10:14.Councillors in Leicester medt tonight to recommend that p`rking

:10:15. > :10:18.on pavements should be banndd in parts of the city.

:10:19. > :10:21.They say it's a major probldm and the ban could be extenddd

:10:22. > :10:25.But residents on one street have started

:10:26. > :10:31.They claim there's simply nowhere else to park their cars

:10:32. > :10:42.Almost all of us have seen ht and many of those possibly even do it

:10:43. > :10:47.ourselves. Here in Leicester, pavement parking can be found almost

:10:48. > :10:52.everywhere. Convenient for drivers, but often difficult for passers`by.

:10:53. > :10:57.Generally speaking, it is inconsiderate. It is not fahr on

:10:58. > :11:01.people who are pushchairs or wheelchairs. Per month, the City

:11:02. > :11:03.Council is being tracked by dissolution. Tonight, counchllors

:11:04. > :11:09.will recommend that parking on pavements should be banned. What we

:11:10. > :11:13.are going to do is identify three parts of the city. Leicester South,

:11:14. > :11:17.Leicester East and Leicester West. There, we can begin our expdriments

:11:18. > :11:22.for banning pavement parking. We will learn a lot from that `nd then

:11:23. > :11:27.we will be able to extend bdyond those areas. Calls encroachhng on

:11:28. > :11:31.the pavement is a widespread issue. This video shows cars in Derbyshire

:11:32. > :11:36.using it like a third lane. But Leicester's efforts to stop it not

:11:37. > :11:40.been welcomed everywhere. Rdsidency have began a petition. I can not see

:11:41. > :11:48.any other way we can park otr cars. If you look on the roads, they are

:11:49. > :11:51.very narrow. My neighbour, who is very sick, needs constant mddical

:11:52. > :11:57.attention and for gamblers hs to come through, it will be a big

:11:58. > :12:00.problem for them. It'll be impossible for anyone to get past

:12:01. > :12:04.year. The council says they will listen to concerns and if the plans

:12:05. > :12:08.are approved by the city maxor, bands would not come in and all

:12:09. > :12:11.makes year. But extra enforcement officers are planned in the

:12:12. > :12:16.meantime. So sites such as this maybe it is far less commonplace. ``

:12:17. > :12:19.become far less commonplace. The case of a Nottinghamshire

:12:20. > :12:21.clergyman whose promotion w`s blocked because he's

:12:22. > :12:24.in a same sex marriage, has been The former Conservative Party

:12:25. > :12:29.Chairman, Norman Fowler, spoke about the experience of Canon Jerdmy

:12:30. > :12:32.Pemberton, who lives in Southwell. The Church of England plans

:12:33. > :12:36.to look into the issues. Canon Jeremy Pemberton was

:12:37. > :12:40.the first ordained minister to be married after same`sex marrhages

:12:41. > :12:44.became legal. He and his partner Lawrence

:12:45. > :12:48.Cannington married this year. He is the deputy senior chaplain

:12:49. > :12:51.for United Lincolnshire Hospitals. He recently secured a promotion

:12:52. > :12:54.at Kingsmill Hospital in Nottinghamshire, but he was

:12:55. > :12:57.refused a licence to do the job by the acting bishop of Southwdll in

:12:58. > :13:01.Nottingham because of his m`rriage. I have been a priest for 32 years

:13:02. > :13:07.and I've tried to be a faithful and a hard`working priest where ever

:13:08. > :13:10.I have been, all different kinds And it did feel

:13:11. > :13:19.like that work was being rejected. Now, the issue has been raised

:13:20. > :13:24.in the House of Lords. Given that there were other

:13:25. > :13:27.clergymen at similar risk, will the minister, as a matter of goodwill,

:13:28. > :13:30.look at the position here and see if there is anything that can be done

:13:31. > :13:36.to help reconcile the difficulties? Lady Northover, the Women

:13:37. > :13:41.and Equalities spokesperson was sympathetic, but said it is a matter

:13:42. > :13:44.for the Church of England. So,

:13:45. > :13:46.step forward the Bishop of Sheffield The recent guidelines of thd house

:13:47. > :13:51.of Bishops states clearly that those who enter a same`sex marriage

:13:52. > :13:54.together with children in their care, should be welcomed into the

:13:55. > :13:57.life of worshipping communities And also the Church of Engl`nd is

:13:58. > :14:03.about to begin a two`year process of structured conversations to

:14:04. > :14:05.explore the changing attitudes to human sexuality

:14:06. > :14:07.and their implications for the life Canon Pemberton may not havd got

:14:08. > :14:14.his promotion, but the Establishment Next, football fans are learning

:14:15. > :14:25.more about a hero of yesterxear Tinsley Lindley lead

:14:26. > :14:31.a remarkable sporting life in the 19th century, playing cricket

:14:32. > :14:34.for Nottinghamshire and football Now, a new QR code

:14:35. > :14:41.on his grave will let visitors learn People can come up here,

:14:42. > :14:46.swipe this code and see his team photographs, write up about him and

:14:47. > :14:54.what he got up to and everything. His great grandsons, they dhdn't

:14:55. > :14:57.know anything about him either! A pioneering project to preserve

:14:58. > :15:10.the disappearing sounds of a city has collected somd

:15:11. > :15:13.of its first recordings. The idea is to assemble a sound

:15:14. > :15:17.archive showing how Leicestdr has The project caught the ear

:15:18. > :15:24.of our political editor John Hess, who's even contributed some

:15:25. > :15:40.historic sounds of his own. What you reckon that is? So how will

:15:41. > :15:47.you recognise everyday sounds from the recent past? Is a footb`ll

:15:48. > :15:56.rattle. is held like a cell at a dispenser. It is one of these! I

:15:57. > :16:02.remember those based micro they re if you years. Composer. Andrew Hill

:16:03. > :16:07.and Colin Hyde of these Midler s oral history archive want to capture

:16:08. > :16:13.the disappearing sounds of the city. Next door to the Buster bowl was the

:16:14. > :16:16.old telephone exchange. This part of Leicester is that marketers are the

:16:17. > :16:19.cultural quarter. It was was dominated by trade and industry

:16:20. > :16:25.swept away and the unique sounds along with them as minor factor in

:16:26. > :16:28.decline. we have to find thd few remaining factories that sthll exist

:16:29. > :16:35.in Leicester. They are out there, we must find them. Listen closdly and

:16:36. > :16:39.you can see the industrial sound of a changing city. This faction makes

:16:40. > :17:42.socks, used to be dozens of similar factories across Leicester. You

:17:43. > :17:45.It could be time to put awax the watering can.

:17:46. > :18:58.It is all thanks to the innovation here at Cannes micro Myra ndar

:18:59. > :19:02.Hinckley. It is a fantastic but unity for the wide area bec`use it

:19:03. > :19:06.will be one Briton's real c`pitals for a technology will domin`te our

:19:07. > :19:13.lives for many years to comd. Lots of good jobs for local people. It is

:19:14. > :19:16.already a successful censordd, develop an enterprise zone `nd doom

:19:17. > :19:21.pioneering work in all manndr of ways. I'm delighted that thdy have

:19:22. > :19:25.launched this project here. It has taken a decade to develop and cost

:19:26. > :19:32.hundreds of thousands of botnds So, why do we need you? When we look

:19:33. > :19:35.at these statistics, there `re still many accidents and her talent is on

:19:36. > :19:40.British roads. There are also problems with heavy congesthon and

:19:41. > :19:47.fuel emissions. `` emissions. There were lots of innovations here that

:19:48. > :19:51.will grow in the next few ydars So has driverless technology h`s turned

:19:52. > :19:58.a corner, could it really bd an end to back`seat driving?

:19:59. > :20:02.Time now for sport with Nat`lie who all this week has been in Scotland

:20:03. > :20:09.Yes, tonight in Glasgow it hs all about the gymnastics as the

:20:10. > :20:15.all`around finals take placd in one of the games' most iconic btildings.

:20:16. > :20:18.Last night, two Nottingham gymnasts, Becky Downey and Sam Oldham,

:20:19. > :20:23.turned at the Hydro Gold here in the team finals.

:20:24. > :20:25.For Becky, it was a big achievement because

:20:26. > :20:29.for the first time, she was part of a women's team to take a title at

:20:30. > :20:48.Like many twentysomethings, Becky Downie is keen on balls. But she

:20:49. > :20:51.likes is uneven. She is European champion and now has a Commonwealth

:20:52. > :20:57.team gold. She is a determined woman, who were just not give up

:20:58. > :21:06.after missing out on the Olxmpics. Missing 2012 was difficult. On the

:21:07. > :21:14.bars on Monday, she was on top form an aspiring young, England team At

:21:15. > :21:22.22, she is a veteran of the camp. I think the team be great. Shd fell

:21:23. > :21:25.off the beam yesterday. She is carrying a heel injury and called on

:21:26. > :21:32.all her experience from the Melbourne games and the paghng

:21:33. > :21:38.Olympics to pull her through. Up and down, carrying a bit of an hnjury,

:21:39. > :21:42.so I was not going to high. But I was pleased with what I did. I had a

:21:43. > :21:48.small mistake at the start, but not much else. Some aldermen injured as

:21:49. > :21:53.he helped 20 gold of the men's event yesterday. And with individtal

:21:54. > :21:57.attempts `` things to come he can watch this afternoon 's competition.

:21:58. > :22:00.We are preparing for our World Championships which are eight weeks

:22:01. > :22:06.away. Anything we get here hs a bonus and the main target for others

:22:07. > :22:07.is the World Championships. The World Championships are in China in

:22:08. > :22:09.October. But also in Athletics for the

:22:10. > :22:15.East Midlands as Leicester's Laura Samuels smashed her personal best

:22:16. > :22:20.in the triple jump to take Silver. I am delighted to say

:22:21. > :22:22.she is with me now. I have been to watch the athletics

:22:23. > :22:31.and kind of took it all in. Proudly wearing your medal there,

:22:32. > :22:34.it looks fantastic. Did you sleep with it under

:22:35. > :22:36.your pillow? And your mum is here and sister

:22:37. > :22:42.and nieces watching at home. How proudly you to take

:22:43. > :22:45.the medal back to Leicester? I feel like a weight is

:22:46. > :22:47.off my shoulders. Finally getting over

:22:48. > :22:49.the 40 metre mark. My mum, sisters

:22:50. > :22:51.and my nieces were really proud This is your first Commonwe`lth

:22:52. > :22:57.Games and your first senior Coming here and for it to bd

:22:58. > :23:05.my first senior major chancd and coming home with a Silvdr medal,

:23:06. > :23:08.I'm really pleased with that. Yes,

:23:09. > :23:14.we have two years until Rio and I can go into training, speak with my

:23:15. > :23:19.coach, and see what steps to take. Now, let us take a look

:23:20. > :23:38.at the round`up from today's action Home to a hero's welcome. Ddrby

:23:39. > :23:42.swimmer Adam Petey was greeted by his proud mum and dad earlidr after

:23:43. > :23:47.claiming another gold last night. He's won a brilliant breast stroke

:23:48. > :23:52.to help the men's team to vhctory and take his medal haul to two goals

:23:53. > :23:59.and won silver. Absolutely `mazing to hear that anthem. I just love my

:24:00. > :24:05.country and I loved the crowd has supported us. In hockey, England's

:24:06. > :24:10.women off through to the selifinals after a 2`1 win over Scotland.

:24:11. > :24:16.Blinker teeming, Dolly bon Hollie Webb. We had great confidence. I

:24:17. > :24:21.think we have real confidence and momentum and we are looking forward

:24:22. > :24:24.to the semifinal. Lots of athletics coming up, look out for

:24:25. > :24:30.Loughborough's Martyn Roonex who cruised into tonight's final 40

:24:31. > :24:33.metres. And earlier today, Loughborough team`mates Isabelle

:24:34. > :24:41.Pooley and Jane Nisbet made it through to the high jump final. They

:24:42. > :24:45.will go for medals on Fridax. Well, they call this the squinty Bridge

:24:46. > :24:51.here in Glasgow. The son is not been out here today, but it has over the

:24:52. > :24:52.last few days for our athletes. A glittering games so far for the East

:24:53. > :25:12.Midlands. It will be turning more unsdttled as

:25:13. > :25:23.we head into tomorrow. It h`s been stay settled for now, and thank you

:25:24. > :25:27.Fran for this picture. So the run of settled weather is coming to an end

:25:28. > :25:31.as we are expecting there to be a band of heavy, thundery showers

:25:32. > :25:34.moving in tomorrow. Bearing that in mind, if you mist the antiqtes road

:25:35. > :25:37.show forming at Derby the other week, you have another chance

:25:38. > :25:42.tomorrow at Belton house, so you may need to pack your umbrella. Before

:25:43. > :25:45.today, the cloud was fairly stubborn in places through the afternoon but

:25:46. > :25:51.eventually started to break up and thin. We have had highs of 22

:25:52. > :25:55.Celsius. So, some decent, clear spells for the moment. As wd go

:25:56. > :25:58.through tonight, we start to see a gradual increase that wacko

:25:59. > :26:05.increasing cloud. One or two light showers as we head through the

:26:06. > :26:09.night. A minimum temperaturd of 15 Celsius. This is where the change

:26:10. > :26:12.comes, a cloudy start to Thtrsday, with one or two showers. Thdn a band

:26:13. > :26:17.are more persistent, heavy `nd potentially thundery showers start

:26:18. > :26:20.to push through from the end of the morning into the early afternoon.

:26:21. > :26:24.One site clears away, we will see some sunny spells then the

:26:25. > :26:30.afternoon, but may also mean we get some home`grown thundery showers

:26:31. > :26:33.developing later in the day. Highs of 22 Celsius in that sunshhne.

:26:34. > :26:36.There will be a good deal of dry weather on Friday, this rain stays

:26:37. > :26:40.down to the south and west of us through the day on Friday, to just

:26:41. > :26:46.allow for one or two light showers. But, that's when is that to moving

:26:47. > :26:48.on Friday night. The low prdssure starts to move up and give ts

:26:49. > :26:53.unsettled conditions. There will be a spell of rain on Saturday morning

:26:54. > :26:57.and showers following on behind Once low`pressure clears to the

:26:58. > :27:02.north, it means that Sunday will be drier, brighter. As the weekend that

:27:03. > :27:13.I to the weekend, Sunday is the better day. So you later for the

:27:14. > :27:46.late news. Goodbye. in the mirrors have had a lovely

:27:47. > :27:55.time. She said, Cos the more he can't have you

:27:56. > :28:11.the more he'll want you.
